Stumbled upon them at Golden Gate park. I ordered the shrimp po boy and enjoyed every single bite. I was scared and overwhelmed because it's pretty big. but i was starving from walking and am so close I chose this. I fell in love with the first bite. The bread is amazing and if i just had the bread with its sauce, i could still be a happy camper. The shrimps oozed out of the bun and i still had so much left over because i enjoyed eating it both with the po boy and outside it. i would return for a lobster roll that are famous but it'll have to be another weekend walk through the park to get some. So glad i don't have to go to redwood city any more to get them. read more

I love love love lobster! So needless to say I HAD to try the lobster roll. The bread was extremely soft which was great because it's the worst when you bite into a sandwich and the bread is so tough that almost everything falls out. Not the case with this sandwich although the bread was on the sweet side which I would not prefer but it was still good. The lobster part was lacking in flavor but there was a good amount of meat! My husband and I also tried the fish and chips. Honestly when we got done eating I wanted to get another order of the fish then the lobster. I am a huge fan of fish and chips and the only place I will go to is in Santa Rosa called Betty's Fish and Chips. But I have been wanting to find other places that are good too and this place came super close to being as good! The breading on the outside had an amazing flavor that complimented the fish and tartar sauce (homemade by the way A+ in my book and doesn't taste like mayo). I liked the fries. They had a good seasoning on them and weren't soggy. Gosh talking about it makes me want to eat more. As for the clam chowder.....meh. It was better then most I have had in SF. The clams were cooked very well. They were not super chewy and didn't feel like you were eating sand with every bite. It's the worst when you chowder like that! My friends and I have been wanting to try Sam's Mobile for a while now. First time, they didn't show due to bad weather; 2nd time they issues with muffler. Finally, we found them in Sunnyvale (at Juniper) and had their famous lobster roll! OMG! The BEST lobster roll in the world! My co-worker and I have recently gotten into tracking down different food trucks whenever they're in the area and Sam's Chowdermobile is one of our favorites. I really like their clam chowder and not just because it's pretty much the cheapest thing on the menu @ $5.50. If you're looking for a full meal, be prepared to spend between $10- $20. I read about the chowdermobile in the SJ Mercury News about a year ago, and based on their rave review, I decided to go get myself a lobster roll. The first one I had was good (not great), if a bit pricy at $12. A long time went by, then I went to the chowdermobile again two weeks ago and was APPALLED that the lobster roll was now $16. Worse, it was only lukewarm, not flavorful at all, and the bread was soggy. I'm super disappointed, and probably will never go here again. I warn everyone against getting one!!! read more

I love their lobster rolls. Sam's was one of the regular trucks that used to come on the Genentech campus when one of the cafeteria's was being remodeled. That's when I fell in love! Now I am literally stalking them. Trying to find them in the area. In short, the lobster roll is simple. Loaded w/ lobster meat, buttered grilled bread, and bits of celery. Simple, but good! Tried their lobster roll at Eat Real 2011 - for $5 you get a generous helping of juicy lobster on top of a fresh, buttery and toasted roll. Word of advice - this was by far the biggest line at the festival. I arrived 10 minutes before opening and already there were 20 or so people in line. My 2nd review for this place. I've eaten here a few times and yesterday was the first time I felt completely ripped off. I hope it was just a temporary shortage of lobster, but for 20 bucks there was probably about 1/3 of the lobster their typically is in the bun. Usually i have to eat it with a fork and knife, I was able to just pick it up. Less meat than on a subway sandwich. Please just be temporary. They get one more shot, if they short me again, game over. read more

I visited Sam's Chowdermobile several times recently. It usually takes around 30-45 minutes to get your food, but it is well worth the wait. Here are the things I have ordered before: Lobster Roll:$16.16+tax = $17.50 5 oz. of tender lobster meat tossed in butter on a toasted roll This was absolutely delicious; It was one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten! The lobster was very fresh and the roll was perfectly crispy and warm. I like how their lobster meat is actually warm when served. A "shortie" roll with less lobster( 3oz.) is also available for $10.62+tax = $11.50. Shrimp Po'Boy: $8.77+tax = $9.50 fried shrimp, lettuce, tomato, and sauce on a bun served with fries This was also very good, and there was lots and lots of tasty fried shrimp. However, these tend to run out quickly for some reason. A Sausage Po'Boy is also available for the same price. Fish and Chips: 2 pc. $9.69+tax = $10.50, 3 pc. $13.39 + tax = $14.50 fried cod and fries This was perfectly fried and really good. Although it isn't visually appealing (they look burnt), I really loved this dish. New England Clam Chowder: $5.08+tax = $5.50 clams, potatoes, cream I thought the clam chowder would be thicker, like "true" New England chowder, but the chowder tuned out to be very light. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor of this chowder. Key Lime Pie: ? pie filled with key lime cream It was very good. However, I was charged $7 although the menu said $5.50. Other items I have not tried: Baja Fish Taco, Shrimp Louie Salad Overall, this is an amazing food truck and I recommend you come and give a try. read more

I go to this truck every monday in belmont for 3 orders of fish & chips for the family...I get the 3 piece which was about $12 or so and is now $14 in less than a year...so ya,its getting pricey... the fish is always hot & crispy but the fries are always salty as hell!...so beware if you have a sodium restricted diet. last time I was there (5/19/14) I ordered 3 orders and had to ask for a bag to put them in myself...you would think thats the least they could do after a customer spends $40+ on there food... WOW - I love this big red ChowderMobile! It came to our office this week and served up probably the best clam chowder I've ever had. I also had a lobster roll, with big, juicy chunks of lobster on this bun that looked like a hotdog bun but was lighter. Really yummy. Had the calamari today along with the Old Bay Fries. Awesome. More calamari than a human should be allowed to eat and it was perfect. Lightly battered and fried absolutely perfectly. Cocktail sauce shold be nothing more than ketchup and good horseradish and that is exactly what I got...The Old Bay Fries...too many...way too many....but darn good. read more

This is definitely a solid 3.5 rating. After finally tracking down the most desired and sought after food truck, it was finally going to be at the Moveable Feast in Willow Glenn. I could totally tell it was Sam's Chowdermobile driving into MF, because the line was all the way onto the sidewalk! After waiting approximately 45 minutes to an hour, victory was finally mine. Not only was I lucky enough to swoop on a shortie lobster roll, but I totally got the last cup of their infamous chowda! Everyone in the mile long line behind me was so pissed it felt awesome. The guy working the orders was super nice and funny, because he told me that I can sell that cup of soup for triple the price to the people in line (he's seen it happen before). However, I didn't feel like hustlin my chowder, plus I didn't wait in line for that long to sell my soup. Anyways, was it worth the hour wait? Meh...though the chowder had huge chunks of clam awesomeness, it still didn't beat my favorite clam chowder from Stagnero Bros. in Santa Cruz. The lobster roll was pretty good, but I might be more of a fan of Woodhouse's lobster roll in SF. Overall, cool truck that brings good seafood out to the masses. read more

totally underwhelming. paid $16.50 (thought it was $15, what gives?) for the Maine lobster roll. Yes, they give you a generous amount of lobster but the sandwich was a sad, sad disappointment in my mouth. I had such high hopes for this sandwich after waiting nearly three months to finally try it. The lobster was meh, it was more chewy that i would've liked it and lacked any sort of taste (lobster meat usually has a very subtle sweetness to it) i needed something more--perhaps some mayo or more garlic butter? but yeah, it was so flavorless that i actually doused mine in tabasco sauce.. so sad. based on the other reviews, it seems like the lobster roll was the only worth trying and despite what others are saying, it was a total disappointment. i wouldn't have it again. read more

I do love their lobster rolls no doubt about it and consider it a "treat" when I indulge in buying one. The Chowdermobile comes by our office complex once a month or every other month. Their last visit was a bit distasteful I think ... because as around a dozen of us were patiently waiting for them to open up the truck (they were late and didn't open up until quite a few minutes past the promised 11:30 time) one of their workers wiped out the price of the lobster roll ($16.50) from the white board and wrote in the new higher price of $17.50! Unfortunately for me, Sam's Chowdermobile was a huge disappointment. After reading all of the reviews, I was really excited to see they were going to be a block away from me today. My friend and I arrived early and were glad we did as a line was already forming at 11:30 am. I ordered calamari and fries and my friend ordered the lobster roll. Sadly, my calamari was a joke - it was so crispy and over cooked the only flavor left was fried flour. Calamari should be crispy on the outside and soft in the middle and have some chew to it. The calamari was so crisp it broke into little pieces when you bit into it. It seemed like they fried in the am in Half Moon Bay and then re-fried it for my order. Such a bummer because it looked like it was quality calamari. The fries were good though so at least I was able to eat something. Even though my meal was basically inedible, my friend's lobster roll was very tasty and worth the $16 as it was loaded with large chunks of butter drenched lobster. I am giving them 3 stars because of the lobster roll and fries - the calamari deserves zero stars. read more

I loveeee a good clam chowder on a cold day (even a not so cold day) lucky for me The Bay is pretty much coldish year round so I always get a nice cup of chowder! They don't skimp on the good stuff either, every cup has ample amounts of potatoes and clam pieces and yummy goodness! Oh, and once my coworker got their special of crab cakes and she said it's one of the best crab cakes she has ever eaten! She said it had so much crab and it wasn't all just random stuffing but real chunks of crab pieces, she was very impressed! Also, a little tidbit -- they only carry a few slices of their special key lime pie on the trucks so once they're out, they're out for the day!! I've been there numerous times literally 15mins after the truck opens to the public and they were already out of the pie! This past Wednesday they hooked it up with a slice and MHMMM MHMM MHMM! DELICIOUS!! As I was walking back to my office people were wondering where I got the pie and when I told them Sam's they had no clue they even had pie -- see, it's a secret! read more

I went to eat at Sam's Chowder House at about 2pm. There was about an hour wait for a table. They told me I could eat at the bar, which had a full menu, no seats there either. So, they told me to go to the Chowdermobile, and they basically have the full menu. I don't know what their definition of "basically" is, but they have a very limited menu. I wanted some Manhattan Clam Chowder... not available on the chowdermobile. I got a Lobster Roll. It was like a combination between a Maine Roll, which has cold lobster Mayo & Celery and a Connecticut Roll, which is warm lobster and butter. This roll had celery, but no mayo and everything else was Connecticut style. It was ok. I am used to the New England rolls, which are bigger and better. From having to park about 1/4 mile away, and then having to deal the holiday crowd, and then not really being able to get what I wanted, was quite a let down. The staff seemed very overwhelmed. It smelled good and the food I saw in the restaurant looked good and everyone seemed happy, who were lucky enough to get seating. And I've had worse lobster rolls. For those reasons and those reasons alone, I'll give it three stars, but their disorganization and not knowing about the chowdermobile having a condensed menu from the restaurant is not acceptable. If I am up here again (doubtful), I probably would eat somewhere else. read more

As someone who visited Maine ostensibly just to travel around and eat fresh lobster (which I did every day for 7 days straight and even, ahem, met George Bush Sr at one of the lobster shacks), it is safe to say I fancy myself somewhat a lobster connoisseur. :) That said, the Chowdermobile delivers! The lobster is awesome and a very generous quantity (which at $16.50 a sandwich is as it should be). I love the lobster, butter and celery mixture, especially when the liquid softens up the underbelly of the bread (doesn't make it soggy, just soft). I work down the road from Lobster Shack in RWC, which is also quite good (and probably a better deal b/c it comes with fries, and you can add a cup of chowder and drink for an add'l $4), BUT the lobster roll from Sam's Chowdermobile is far superior, so if that's what you're hungry for seek them out. Or add them on Facebook so you can stay abreast of their location. read more
