Decided to check out Sampannee on a Saturday night to satisfy a Thai craving!!!! They had seating available but b we also saw an option to join a wait list. At that time wait was less than 5 minutes so we just walked over. We were able to take our pick of tables. The decor is super cute as if you were sitting with family. Loved the pillows. We have our favorites but decided to try different dishes. For apps, we got the undercover shrimp and the dirty wings with Larb seasoning What is Larb??? Deliciousness, that's what! Wings were crisply breaded and sprinkled in this seasoning. We could eat these all by itself! The undercover shrimp was shrimp fried in a roll. The sauce served was perfectly sweet with a slight kick. For mains, we tried the yellow curry, and of course, I had to get pineapple fried rice. The pineapple rice comes with both chicken and shrimp here!!! Perfectly cooked veggies, perfect pineapple chunksand a perfect amount of raisins and cashews. You won't need any sauce for this rice. The flavors on its own are great! Now to the yellow curry. They ask for your level of spice so you will get it how you like it. We chose medium! If we thought the pineapple rice was amazing. THE CURRY!!! It just blew us away. We tried it with both the bowl of white rice and the pineapple rice. Before leaving it was decided this place will have another visit so we can take food home! Drinks (non alcoholic)- We tried the wonder berry and white peach. Wonderberry was our favorite. White leach was good but the peach flavor was more towards the bottom and gone after a few sips. The drink was left with a nice sweet lime flavor afterwards. The staff was amazing and attentive. Great service. We were checked in regarding the timeliness of our food as well as for the taste. Very much appreciated. Sampannee is pretty new and with this great food and service we look forward to returning again and again. New Thai restaurant that is seemingly a hole-in-the-wall? Sampannee is tucked comfortably on P Street and 21st/22nd Street near Dupont Circle, a bit away from all the crowds on 18th. I'm glad my friend and I stopped by here for dinner. The service is attentive (always filling our water) and got our orders pretty quickly. The food came out reasonably fast (less than 15 minutes). JUMBO!! CRABMEAT FRIED RICE - 22 Flavor bomb for sure. Even without the egg or crab, the rice was super flavorful - stir-fried with spices, lots of umami and the sweetness that is found in a lot of Thai dishes. There was a surprising amount of crab which made this fried rice worth it. I'd want to think it was real crab (the texture tasted like real crab and not flour), but if it's imitation, then it's pretty darn close to the real thing. The scrambled eggs were soft and fluffy. The onions, green onions and other garnishes only added more to the fried rice and completed it. Let's just say that I wolfed down my fried rice pretty quickly and didn't talk much because it was that delicious. On top of that, I got to take a good amount for a meal on another day. I can see why this is one of the "Chef's Kiss Dishes". I would recommend this if you're craving some fried rice! My friend got the Green Curry, which she enjoyed as it was comforting and a Thai restaurant staple. They have a lot of other good options, too, and I had a hard time choosing. In the future, I'll consider the Shrimp Woon Sen, Roasted Duck Curry or Zuchi Salmon Curry. Those three look really good, haha. read more

Sampannee excelled in all but one area, but unfortunately that one area was the food. I ordered the pad see ew ($16) with beef (+$2). It looked amazing, but sadly most of the beef was quite chewy. Perhaps the cow had a difficult and stressful life. The disappointing meat resulted in the three-star rating. But, everything else was lovely, from the thimble-like water cups (much larger than a thimble of course) to the prompt and kind service. I will probably give Sampannee another chance in the future. Very good, spicy Thai food with friendly service and a beautiful, floral ambiance. It reminds me Paris a bit! They have classic dishes like pad Thai, pad Kee mao, green and yellow curry, fried rice, and they even have khao soi. The people who work here are so friendly and they're always helpful and smiling. They also have a cute quartet of spices or sauces that I always ask for to add to my food. I love their chilli and garlic or their dried chilli flakes. They always add a kick. There are a lot of floral decorations and large windows that let in lots of light. It seems very warm and welcoming. The only issues with the restaurant stem from their mock tails and a couple desserts. The mock tails could have more distinct flavours. Also, the waffle dessert seemed like it was made from Eggos and the neglectful uncle had bread from a hot dog bun. They have good flavours, but I wish they would make their own bread and waffles. Their mango sticky rice or the plain ice cream are the better options. The Thai iced tea is also delicious and strong in flavour. read more

My wife and I ate here during our July 2025 visit to D.C. We went there based on Yelp reviews but were very disappointed. We started with an order of spring rolls. These came only with a sweet sauce. They were ok. My wife had the Kapow Duck. It was very bland and was served with no accompanying sauces. We asked for sauce and then received a collection of hot sauces and soy sauce but these did not add much to the enjoyment of the dish. I had Pad See Ew. This was also very bland. Again, with added sauce, the dish was still not very good. Our waitress was not very attentive. We do not recommend this restaurant. read more

What a great spot in DC. My coworker and I were in the mood for some legit Thai food and this popped up closest and one of the highest reviews! Yelp didn't disappoint one bit. The overall experience was amazing. All around from the service to the food. Let's start with the food. Ordered the Pad Thai and my coworker ordered the panang curry lunch special situations. Came with 3 different choices and we both got spring rolls. They were super crunchy and flaky (as they should be) came out hot and very good. The next was my dish Pad Thai. It was really good and highly recommended. I would order it again. The like on top sealed the deal. My proteins were chicken and beef both tender and cooked perfectly. Very flavorful and it was a huge lunch portion. I was so full after I left. I did try a taste of the panang and it is one of my favorite dishes and will order that next time. We also ordered the French fries and you can pick between 3 types of seasonings which is awesome. We just told her to pick one. Order them extra crispy (always). The overall inside was also great. They had the heater on and warmed it up a bit and it was very cozy. All three of the ladies working this afternoon were friendly, interactive, and smiling the entire time. Our main server R (don't know how to spell her whole name) but she was amazing. So friendly and so interactive. We got to know her and her history it was really nice and added to the experience. I really enjoyed my rice and got to enjoy the amazing customer service and decor. The portion was also great, not too big but perfect for 1-2 meals depending on how hungry you are. this place hit right on! nothing outstanding but a good plate full of pad thai. medium heat was pleasantly heated, could have also done mild and been happy about it. seasoning hit the slightly sweet slightly sour notes right on. finished my plate and didn't feel bloated and heavy afterwards at all (means they didn't overdo the sodium), but could have just as easily left a third of it for the day after without feeling too hungry about it. the place was mostly empty when i got there a bit before six, but it suddenly and torrentially filled up by 6:15. go early to get the refreshing window seats. read more

Sampanee is an incredible Thai spot that we just happened upon during our trip. I wasn't able to get there, but the takeout was so good - which isn't easy with Thai noodles. They were fast and inexpensive but mostly the taste was one of the best I've had in ages. Pad See Ew is such a classic dish that sometimes leave something to be desired when the classic flavor is adjusted. Every year, a group of my girlfriends will get together for our annual "holi-date." We will all get dressed up, go out to a nice restaurant, catch up and might even exchange small gifts depending on the year. However, this year everyone had so much going on and the idea of going out turned out to be more stressful than enjoyable. With that in mind, we decided that this year we could have our holidate at home, order delivery and sip champagne in our fuzzy socks. Thai food always seems to be a favorite for many and knowing the tastes of the group, I felt this was the route to go. I ordered an array of entrees and apps and scheduled a delivery for just about 30 minutes before guests would arrive. The delivery was right on time and the food was delicious. The standout dishes were the pineapple fried rice and the pad see ew. The curry duck also had a great flavor, but we were a little disappointed that it didn't come with any rice. I didn't check, but perhaps I would have had to order that as a separate side which I've never had to do before (and if so it was pretty explicit.) The dishes I tried were a little underwhelming. The Pad See Ew tasted average (3/5). The Spring Roll was below average and bland (2/5). Terrific. Got the Zuchii Salmon Curry. A bit outside of my comfort zone as I'm more a chicken curry guy, but this did not miss. Curry was rich with flavor and salmon was tender and flaky. I tried Sampannee for the first time via ubereats and the food was fresh and cooked well. I ordered the Thai fried rice, spring rolls, tom yum soup, and pad Thai -- all veggie & tofu. The food was tasty but it was missing the authentic Thai flavors. I didn't get any Thai basil flavor or spices - a bit bland with the exception of the tom yum soup, which was spot on. I gave them 4 stars because everything was cooked fine and I still enjoyed my meal, but it just didn't taste like Thai food - especially the pad Thai and Thai fried rice. Sampanne is a Thai restaurant near DuPont. My friend was really excited to take me here because she had a great first experience dining here. I usually order pad see ew when I get Thai food because I love the sweet sauce and rice noodles. However, I opted for their duck roll and fried tofu. My friend ordered one of their chicken curry dishes (she had ordered it last time and hyped it up a lot). Unfortunately, both of our dishes were disappointing. We waited about 30-45 minutes to get our food, which seemed a little long for dining on a Saturday around 8pm. Our food also came out at separate times, so we couldn't really eat together without one of the dishes getting cold. I thought the duck roll was going to be more a bun/pancake-type dish, but it was equivalent to one sushi roll. The fried tofu was pretty plain and dry, and my friend's curry seemed super watered down. The staff was kind, but our experience did not live up to the hype :( read more

Such a hidden gem! I almost don't want to write this review and have it blow up, but it's too delicious not to share. Sampannee is probably one of the best Thai places I've ever had. The flavors are great, the service was excellent and very attentive, and the interior is airy and super cute. I've already been twice within the week, it's that good. Duck Roll 4/5 This was probably the most average dish we got, the duck flavor just wasn't as prominent, especially with the sauce, but still quite good. Roasted Duck Curry 5/5 Really good! There's slices/chunks of skin-on duck, and the duck flavor is much more noticeable. We asked for mild spiciness, and there was still a kick to i, so adjust to your taste accordingly. Comes with a side of rice. Massaman Curry w/ Chicken 4/5 Good curry, but I prefer the roasted duck curry. A little on the sweeter side, this one is definitely better with more spice. Zuchii Salmon Curry 4.5/5 Big pieces of salmon, almost fillet size. Really tender and flavorful, a close second to the roasted duck curry. Pad Thai w/ Pork 5/5 Wow! This one really surprised me. Not just a generic pad thai, the flavor pops and it's so good. Recommend for sure. Jumbo Crabmeat Fried Rice 5/5 I loved this dish! There's big chunks of flaky crabmeat throughout, the egg was amazing, the fried rice was very fluffy, not oily or greasy at all. Absolutely delicious, a must-order for fried rice. Pineapple Fried Rice w/ Chicken and Shrimp 5/5 Not as special as the crabmeat fried rice, but comes with the addition of curry powder, pineapple, chicken and shrimp. Very good all the same. Mango Sticky Rice 5/5 This was so good!!! Definitely save room for dessert because this blew me away. The presentation is amazing and the flavors are just right. Mango was fresh and presented beautifully, the sticky rice is warm and soft, and they use coconut milk instead of condensed milk, which made it the perfect amount of sweetness (not too sweet) I honestly haven't tried any dishes that I disliked. Great place for authentic, delicious Thai food. It's definitely a must-visit for me every time I'm in DC. read more

Took my sister out for a delayed birthday celebration. I read a lot about this restaurant and I think this is one of the best Thai restaurants in DC when it comes to freshness of food and hospitality. We had a great time. We started off with Mekong Sour and Hello 911, I'm on Fire. The drinks were delicious but the Hello 911 stole the show. It was not too spicy in my opinion but packed a ton of flavor. We started with the spring rolls and sampannee wings. The wings were so good we had to get another. I would have gotten another to be honest. For the main course we got the spicy basil fried rice (with beef) and the fried fish. I really want to emphasize the freshness of the food. My sister has been to Thailand before and she kept raving about the similarities in food quality. One of our host (Ratta) did a great job sharing great energy with us and making the experience enjoyable. This is definitely on my list of good restaurants in DC. I highly recommend. read more

Good experience with a couple mishaps along the way so couldn't give a 5 star. Got seated quickly and venue was awesome. Ordered 2 drinks and 3 food items. The 3 food items came but the 2 drinks never did. We also ordered mango sticky rice but didn't get that either. The curry and crab fried rice were 10/10 but the fried chicken wings were on the dry side with the batter being too think and no sauce to accompany the wings. The waiter was really nice though so I didn't have the heart to give a 3 star. read more
