The medium spice is the standard (get mild if you're not a spice person) but up the spicy if you want everything to be really delicious. Always 10/10. What a hidden gem. I loved our dining experience at Sampanne. We started off with the dumplings and chicken satay both were delicious. Pork belly is their new appetizer item and it was very crispy. The curry duck was my favorite entrée. It was 10 out of 10. We also ordered the crab meat fried rice, which will last us a few dinners lol. The shrimp Pad Thai was my husband's favorite. Ambiance: This small little shop is so endearing. The first thing you see as you approach the restaurant is the decorated door. Once inside, you'll find lots of small tables perfect for folks dining alone or in pairs. While very cozy, I wouldn't say that you're uncomfortably close to other diners. Food: We opted for the drunken noodle with beef (which actually was quite spicy!) and the stewed pork legs on rice (which were VERY flavorful). Drinks: My friend and I both opted for the thai tea. Food came packaged well. I liked that the sticky rice was soft and perfectly sweet but disappointed that the mango was not sliced. I have had Tom yum noodles at various street food stalls in Thailand and love the Tom yum mama noodles so I know what this is supposed to taste like. The noodles ended up being very bland without a hint of Tom yum flavor. The noodles were also dry. I ended up just picking apart the noodles and eating the shrimp, vegetables, and crab meat. The atmosphere and decor are the highlights for me along with the service. The back part of the restaurant is beautifully decorated from wall to ceiling, while the front facing P Street is cozy and lets in lots of natural light from the windows. The staff was attentive to us during the whole meal. With the evening sunlight shining brightly on our table, they offered to pull the shades. My family liked all three dishes we got - Papaya Salad, Green Curry, Thai Fried Rice, and a whole branzino. The highlight for me was the Papaya Salad and Green Curry, which were the right amount of spice for me. The branzino itself is a little plain and really requires the sauce to be poured over for maximum flavor. The Thai Fried Rice was typical, so I would probably prefer another one on the menu next time. The restaurant got pretty full during dinner time on a Sunday night. Scrolling through Instagram got me so excited about trying out the new Thai restaurant in Dupont Circle! A big shoutout to my fellow foodie for sharing his amazing experience with us. I have to say, this place is absolutely to die for! The ambiance is so beautiful and perfect for the spring season. And the customer service is definitely on point! When I sat at the bar and ordered my favorite Tito's and cranberry, the bartender was so friendly and even brought cranberry juice for my drink from the store because they were out stock. Double kudos to her! The menu is quite familiar with other Thai cuisines, so I went for my usual order of spring rolls and Thai fried rice with beef. But, word on the street is that their wings are amazing! I had to try them out, so I ordered the dirty wings with the larb dry seasoning and they were absolutely delightful! The chicken was so crispy and the smoky flavor was just perfect. And, to top it off, they even gave me a side of their sweet and sour sauce that goes on their Sampannee wings. Oh, and did I mention that they offer a $15 lunch special which includes an appetizer and meal? That's such a great deal! And, my server was just delightful, sweet, and so personable. I would love to always see her on my visits and learn more about her and her culture. She says they do food really well here, and I must agree! A recent addition to the ever-bustling restaurant scene of the lively Dupont Circle neighborhood, Sampannee is a charming little Thai bistro with a "neighborhood diner"-like feel. I made a reservation for 2 for 7pm on a Wednesday night after reading that it can sometimes get crowded, but when we got there, the restaurant was about half-full. Up a flight of stairs and past a board showcasing photos of their colorful specials, Sampannee's interior is cozy and quaint, with a rustic-looking bar and large windows with cushions on the sill to sit. The booths lining the restaurant are comfy and intimate - great for a casual dinner or fun night with a date or friends. We were immediately seated by our server, who was very fast, friendly, and efficient. The menu is fairly extensive, boasting a wide variety of soups, salads, curries, rice/noodles dishes, stir-fries, and a long list of menu specials - there's truly something for everyone, and many of their dishes can be made with your choice of protein, which is quite nice, since not every Thai place has that option. Our food came out within ten minutes of ordering - my friend ordered the Pad See Ew with Chicken ($16 - can vary if you choose other protein options). It came with a generous amount of nicely cooked chicken, and the dish was seasoned well, with Chinese broccoli, and nicely textured wide rice noodles that soaked up that signature sweet and savory pad see ew sauce. I ordered the Gai Yang Set ($19), which comes with a half chicken marinated in garlic sauce, served with papaya salad, sticky rice, and a duo of sauces (seafood sauce and tamarind sauce). The half chicken was a good portion with the skin left on, and the garlic sauce marinade was pungent and sinus-clearing in the best way possible. The dark meat wasn't too fatty, and perfect when dipped in the acidic seafood sauce and the spicy tamarind sauce. I found the white meat a bit dry, but this was remedied by the fantastic sauces! But the papaya salad that came with the chicken was truly to die for - it was wonderfully tangy, with fresh papaya that had a hint of sweetness, and a zing from the vinegar-based dressing. The rich crunch of the peanuts also added a nice flavor/textural contrast. The sticky rice came wrapped in a plastic bag inside a little bamboo container - it's definitely sticky (more so than your traditional Japanese sushi rice), but pairs nicely with the chicken and the sauces. Overall, we enjoyed our meal at Sampannee - yes, it is a bit more expensive than your traditional neighborhood Thai place (especially since their default tip starts at 20%), but it's generally on par (if not a bit cheaper) with other places in the Dupont Circle area. Service is efficient and kind, the food is flavorful and authentic-tasting, and it's such a cute vibe - a solid four stars! read more

The food was spicy and flavorful. I really enjoyed the spicy (level 3) Drunken Noodles that paired especially well with my sweet, strong Thai Tea. The tea wasn't watery in the slightest and came in a large portion for just $5. The decor of the restaurant itself is vibrant with items from Thailand all along the walls and counter tops. My friend and I sat next to the window - an adorable spot. The only downside to this place was the fact that the waiter did not come around to fill our water cups. Due to it being a busy night, it seemed that the wait staff also forgot to bring some items out after we ordered. However, they were very kind and quickly fixed any errors made. It's also important to note the bathroom is downstairs. You'll have to go down quite steep stairs, so it's worth walking down with someone if you find it difficult to maneuver alone. We tried getting on the waitlist on a Saturday night at 7pm and the wait came back at over an hour. Which must mean it's good. We were staying at a hotel next door and it was convenient enough to just get carry out. The carry out was fast - food was ready in 20 minutes. It had similar taste to normal pad thai with a The panang curry was very liquidy and the spice contributed to the good flavor. My boyfriend and I were visiting DC and went on a double date with his friend. The place got really good reviews and we decided to try it out. FOOD: As far as Thai food goes, I was generally happy but not blown away (Disclaimer: I visited Thailand recently). I was excited to see Khao Soi on the menu, which is a dish I only found out about recently in my recent trip to Thailand. Of course, it wasn't as good as what I had in Bangkok, but it was tasty and it hit the spot. I think the flavor just needed a bit more depth to it. Also we asked for it to be Thai Spicy, which just meant they added extra chili flakes. It was spicy, but definitely not Thai Spicy. I did really like the drunken noodles which we got with tofu. I asked for it spicy and it was just a little spicy, but for most Americans that's probably fine. SERVICE: Generally, I thought the service was good. No complaints, very nice people. AMBIANCE: Quite cute! I appreciated the floral decor all over. But I do remember the bathroom being far away, it's downstairs and it's for the whole building from what I gathered.
