My family and I were were in the area a few days ago and we got hungry so we found Samarkand. Samarkand is a combination of Uzbek-Central Asian and Russian cuisines. I am half Russian so I know what is authentic and Samarkand checks off all of the boxes. When we entered the building, the restaurant looked hole in the wall but we got seated right away. For drinks, I had the best compote in my life. We ordered a lot of food and we had a little bit of everything. My favourite plate was the 2x sambusa, a golden coloured, crisp Tajik pastry filled with meats and served with a ketchup like sauce at least here. Manty was also tasty but I must admit that the service and originality of Samarkand puts this place on the map for places to dine at. Was traveling and in the mood for some Central Asian Cuisine, and found this place in south east Denver. (It also seems to have a website that goes by by the name Registan Kebab Cafe, the sign on the road says Samarkand). The food in this restaurant is just awesome. In short it is the best Uzbek food I have had inside or outside of Uzbekistan. The Samsas are flaky and the filling is made with fresh spices. The salad was good, though it's a bit early in the season for tomatoes and cucumber. It seems as if they are locally sourcing their ingredients. I asked what beverages they had and they offered a berry juice drink that was very fresh, like something that was homemade, very flavorful. The best part of the meal was dessert was the Medovik. It is a thin layered honey cake, but the key is the honey. That honey made the cake and tastes nothing like honey you can buy in the store. It reminded me of Central Asian honey, which tends to be super sweet but have a distinct floral flavor. I asked them if they imported it, but no it comes from a local person ho keeps their own hives. We are visitors here in Denver. Although my husband was born in United States, I was born in old Soviet union. Which means I absolutely love Russian food, every time we travel we try to visit Russian eatery. I wanted to make sure you guys know the stuff was absolutely amazing, the sweet girl Who took care of us was very pleasant. The food was amazing! I've never had food from Uzbekistan before, but am somewhat familiar with Russian and Ukrainian food. The restaurant is in a strip mall, and not hard to miss. It's on the end, with a door that is unmistakable. When we walked in, the entryway was covered in gauze, and a woman greeted us and sat us. We ordered a few things - Greek salad (they were out of the Olivier salad, sad face!), chicken Tabaka, and Khonim (pasta roll with beef, potato and onions, topped with sour cream). We also ordered bread. The portions were *massive* - we ended up taking more than 1/2 our food home, and the leftovers served us for three days. The food was really quite tasty, although as others have mentioned, it did not have a lot of seasoning. I was actually okay with this, as the food I grew up with had a lot of seasoning and left me feeling really heavy - this food did not. Staff does not wear face mask so typically I would not give 5 stars due to that, but I guess people coming to eat are not wearing mask either but it is a bit confusing and concerning. I am torn about this establishment. Time was about 19:00hrs ish. When we entered this establishment, we can choose where ever we want to seat. We opt to see at one of the "LONG TABLES" near to the Bar. While we were there, there is a Huge Party of Ladies celebrating something seated on our Left Wing aka at the Left Wing of this establishment. During our Dinner, many more Patrons having their Dinner here. From our observations, perhaps most of the Patrons, might have known this establishment or the staffs. Perhaps are the other patrons are REGULARS and though I might be wrong, they might have been speaking Russian or Uzbeck to one another. Personally, we cannot get the full experiences since some of the dishes stated in the Menu, they either don't make it, or don't have it. *BIG SIGH* From what I could recall we ordered the following items : * Sambusa ($4.99) * Fresh Salad ($5.99) * Lamb Shish Kebab + Rice ($10.00) * Ribs Shish Kebab + Rice ($11.99) * Samarkand Pilaf ($7.99) * Lamb The Fresh Salad comes with tomatoes, cucumbers, raw red onion, oil/mayonnaise and greens. The Samarkand Pilaf Rice comes with Beef, sliced onions, carrots and spices mixed with freshly cooked rice. Take note, this Samarkand Pilaf can be "smelly" due to the meat they used. Its LOADED with MORE CARROTS, than I can imagined. Thankfully, Hubs like this dish a lot. As for the Lamb and Ribs Shish Kebab, we opt to have it with Rice. YES both Proteins comes in with METAL SKEWERs. The Rice is sprinkled with some kind of Red Powder which tasted like Sumac and Raw Slices of Red Onions. Thankfully, both Proteins, are tender to eat. Take note, the BREAD, they served is AUTOMATICALLY, charged in your Check aka Bill, if you don't check it or even don't eat. Thankfully, I check the Check aka The Bill before leaving. We also opt to have 2 orders of Coke Cola. Each was $1.50, hence it was $3.00 Take note, for the Coke Cola, from my observation, they pour it from those Plastic Bottled of 2 Liters. Hubs also opt to have Coffee ($1.50). Its just a generic kind of BLACK Coffee. Unfortunately, there aren't any regular sugar at our table. Hubs rated the food we ordered as 4 stars especially the Pilaf that Hubs like it a lot, and NOT forgetting the Sambusa. We live in the neighborhood, and are slowly trying to visit all our local restaurants. My husband has traveled to Pakistan and is familiar with Uzbekistanian food. I found all our dishes to be flavorful and tasty, but I had nothing to compare it to, as this was my first time having such food. Hubs said it tasted fresh and was very good and authentic. We started with the Borsch, which I probably never would have ordered, but it was delicious. I liked the Sambusas, but my husband wasn't impressed. I think I was just in need of some carbs, as the other dishes weren't served with rice or bread or other somewhat unhealthy accompaniments we Americans are accustomed to. ;o) His Chicken Tabaka was very moist and flavorful, and also a large serving. Everything was definitely a good deal for the price, which I feel is rare in Denver, even in these cool strip mall style restaurants. They have a few beers (Corona and Stella) and a few wines. Husband ordered the Malbec, which was a generous pour. We later saw the other large groups each had their own bottle of vodka with a pitcher of cranberry juice, which I kind of loved. Very authentic. I saw several teapots, and would love to try some tea the next time we go back. The tiramisu was the only disappointment, but the server did warn us that it wasn't good. It was served frozen and feeezer-burnt, and we left it mostly untouched. There was only one guy who took our order and brought our dishes, but I found him to be very attentive. There were three other large parties in there, and I don't think anyone was neglected. The layout of tables, in addition to the chair covers made us think there was a wedding going on. Despite having only been open for a little over a year, Samarkand Restaurant has already made quite the name for itself across Denver with a number of dishes worthy of the historically-rich Uzbek city for which it is named. Begin your journey with a hearty offering of chickpeas simmered with veal (a riff on the soup/stew known as Mokhora, much-loved across Uzbekistan). If, instead, something a bit more handheld would hit the spot, check out the flaky (and substantial!) beef/lamb/onion pastries called Samsa, whose filling is laced with just enough fat to bring out the flavor. Ooh, but don't those salads sound interesting? Personally, I've always been a superfan of the "Ollvier" (here a creamy amalgamation of potatoes and hardboiled eggs). But I can also see the appeal of the "Nezhinka" with its cool cucumber and juicy pear, or even the "Israel" which unites foodstuffs both fruity (kiwi, banana) and vegetal (peas, corn) - you didn't think that was possible did you? But let's not reach saturation point just yet - there's even more to come (yep, here we go again!) so by all means, let's continue. A near-ubiquitous eatery in parts of the former Soviet Union is the Shashlychnaya which features an awe-inspiring array of grilled meat kabobs. It will thus be unsurprising to hear that Samarkand is no slouch in this department, with selections including Lyulya (ground beef), chicken, lamb and even liver for you to sample. But I think you'd also get a real kick out of one of their rice pilafs, such as the Kazy Palov, starring moist, rich sausage (made with a very traditional recipe also popular in Uzbekistan's neighbors, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan). If they happen to have it available on your visit, another idea to consider is the succinctly-named lamb/potato stirfry Jiz-Biz. And my gosh, you can't leave without trying a slice of phenomenal honey cake [Medovik] or one of their other homemade desserts! Having lived in Kazakhstan I was excited to try this place after driving by it several times. We got sat immediately after we got there and then after waiting over 10 minutes, finally ordered - or attempted to order... Was told that they were out of Plov....seriously? No plov? So we ordered a Kebab and samsa. The server returned to inform us that they were out of Samsa.....ok, this is going to be fun as the two items I came to eat and likely their most popular, they were out of. He suggested Manti instead which we got. The manti came with another dish that we didn't order so we sent back and eventually the kebab arrived too. Came here late night last week since it was on the way home for me. There weren't very many people there, two parties just finished their meals paid and left. One group was just hanging around. I went in and let them know it was to go, and they sat me down at one of their tables to wait. Ordered chicken kabob, beef or steak kabob, and their version of beef empanada. Although the food was really good, they did make us wait a long long time. I do suspect it was the empanada thing that took a while, but it was frustrating as it was unexpected. Lastly, as my side I ordered a salad, and they had given me rice. As a take out order, this just added to my frustrations. Overall the food was great, a little bit expensive, but worth it.
