If you are in NY looking for a breakfast nook, Sam A.m. is the spot. You feel like family as this is a small intimate restaurant with the owners personal touch. The food, each item individually prepared with love in each item. Ohh, and what is brunch without mimosa, mine with apple juice. The service was fantastic ..from the kitchen to tour table with constant attention to our needs. The feeling was like coming downstairs into mom's kitchen and having breakfast with family.
Sam am was a unique experience! My friend and I stopped by for brunch on a Sunday morning, around 10. The place was quite popular, with people waiting outside for a table. Spots are first come first served, but thankfully we only had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a spot at the bar. We ended up sitting in front of the chef, who was very chatty and fun. We learned more about the menu items we were interested in directly from him, and it was clear that he cared a lot about the food. The restaurant is very casual in both ambiance and service style. The food was great!! I was craving something warm and hearty and ordered the sausage gravy and biscuit. The gravy was thick and rich with a fantastic flavor. The egg was perfectly runny! My only wish would have been for more biscuit, but the meal was still enjoyable. My friend ordered and enjoyed the avocado toast. Sam'am is a spot worthy checking out if you are nearby!
Small and quirky place that makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk in the door. The chef is out chatting with people and has a little knowledge about a lot of things. He's a self-professed expert on Carhartt jackets and noticed mine when I walked in. The food is very good as well. The menu is small but execution is delicious.
It's definitely a nice addition to the neighborhood! The space is on the small side but they make it work as it's so inviting and cozy. We finally had our first brunch recently. Not sure why we waited so long, I guess maybe the line for tables scared us a little but it's not bad at all. We waited about 10 minutes. The food was amazing. We had one of the specials (chicken and waffles) and also one of the signature sandwiches which is also really good. Will definitely be back and highly recommend it to others. The service is efficient and fast.
This is still my favorite breakfast spot in Jersey City. The owner is extremely sweet and makes you feel at home when you were there. The breakfast is good well priced and the tea is amazing. We've been there few times and every time we're driving around in this area we always end up here I love the hospitality thank you.
The restaurant ambiance is close knit and cozy.its got an old school feel to it as well. Tables are all over along with counter seating as well. The restaurant is decorated with various objects along the wall like books , music cds, and other random objects. The service was great and very friendly. Everyone there was also very energetic too. I ordered the chef's special shrimp and grits. It was served with a sunny side up egg as well. The grits were somewhat smooth although the egg nor the shrimp seasoned well enough. I think the grits also had a little bit of cheese maybe to aid in the smoothness. I wish they would've been more aggressive in seasoning because the dish would've been perfect. I would definitely come back though and try something else and because the vibe great ! Hopefully, the next dish I try will be better.
TLDR: Easily the best classic American breakfast in town. And for $15 it's quite unbeatable. Highly recommend a visit if you're around Jersey City! It's a small breakfast spot in an easily missed location; don't walk in the corner if you're on GPS, though, as it's someone's residence - oops, awkward! When you step inside, you're quickly greeted by the host(ess), and the wait was no longer than 10 minutes on a weekday afternoon. High volume, high quality, the staff here are on it! Let's be honest, there's not much exciting about a classic American breakfast; what's there to be impressed by for an omelet, roasted potatoes, and toast? Well, let me tell you about sam a.m: Omelet of the Day: Broccoli Cheddar... clean and simple, cooked to perfection, not overcooked. The broccoli? So lightly steamed there wasn't a doubt it was healthy... as a parent, you could probably get any reluctant child to devour this, too! Roasted Potatoes: Perfectly roasted, good balance of a crisp exterior and smooth interior. Toast: Nothing exciting here, either, but it was perfectly toasted, not even a tad burnt. It had a bit of chew and paired with butter made a smooth combination. Service was amazing as can be, and all guests are treated like VIP here - literally! And if you're lucky enough to sit at the bar, they cook the omelet in front of you AND you can watch all the food being cooked... for the gram / video of course. (Except I got distracted by the food and missed the opportunity :( ) How was this only $15? Beats me, but I'm definitely returning whenever I'm back in Jersey City!
The food was very simple and to the point, no outstanding flavors. I think its a great spot if you want your traditional eggs with side breakfast. it was imo a bit overpriced, the portions were smaller than expected. my avocado toast almost $20 but it was 1 slice of thin sourdough with avocado that didnt cover the entire toast, also the added sprouts was more like 5 pieces of sprouts. We also ordered a side of chicken for $5 but turned out to be rotisserie chicken which is $5 for the entire chicken at costco haha. The french toast did look like a delicious option but otherwise the breakfast was not bad but average. The water was also served in plastic chipped cups and tasted very soapy. Would recommend bringing your own water.
Fantastic, quaint, hidden little gem in Jersey City. We showed up about 10 minutes before it opened and there was already a line. That told me everything that I needed to know about this place. Small, homey, friendly, and the chef is hilarious. He's out front cooking it up for you to see. Breakfast although, a simple choice, was cooked perfectly. I will definitely stop here again after my early morning photo sessions.
Intimate little cafe, good for a quick bite. Service was particular, they kept swapping out servers so they were a bit forgetful. Challah French toast + side of bacon & Grit special (ribs) - French toast was fluffy but lacked a bit of flavor, bacon was good. Grits weren't seasoned and ribs were ok. *The berry limeade was surprisedly better than the orange juice.

Solid cafe to add to your breakfast/lunch rotation. I came here for brunch with a friend on a Saturday afternoon. They have a cute outdoor seating area which is doggo friendly! The menu has seasonal specials combined with year round staples. There is a little something for everyone - sweet, savory, vegan, vegetarian. I had the blushing palmer (half berry limeade and half iced tea) and Texas Sam Salad. My friend had the Sam A.M. roast coffee and summer celebration salad. My friend really enjoyed her coffee. The blushing palmer was refreshing, a little on the tart side, and not too sweet. The salads were good, filling, fresh, but nothing I would write home about. I'd come back to try out more of their brunch items and next season's specials. Shout out to Juan for being such a great host! He was super friendly, patient, answered all my questions, and offered up genuine suggestions. read more
Between 4 and 5 stars for me. Sam a.m. was a lovely, cozy breakfast joint, in the continually bustling downtown area of Jersey City. The service was very warm and inviting, cultivating a vibe here that would make this spot a regular for me, if I lived in the area. I ordered the classic breakfast sandwich which was quite tasty, as well as the famous French toast, which was just as great as advertised and the real highlight of the meal. I'll pretty much tell anyone who'll listen (and a few that won't) that quality French toast is more of a rarity than it should be, but Sam a.m doles out something as close to perfect as it gets. read more

The food is good but on the pricey side and sometimes the bread is stale. And they are inconsistent too, some times I get a side with my to go sandwich and sometimes I don't. But i know its supposed to come with a little bit of coleslaw at least. They are sometimes open past 3 and they dont advertise thier night hours well and then wonder why no one shows up. They need to update thier webpage and Google so people know when they are open. I miss the twilight menu and I hope they bring it back. I had a lot of great meals here so thats why I'm giving it 4 but if these inconsistencies keep happening I will lower my rating read more

This is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Jersey City & for several reasons - the honey badger latte is my ultimate favorite with a not too sweet taste, the comfort of the intimate seating early morning (it does get pretty packed if you go too late), avocado toast with sunny side up eggs, and the service is attentive. The owner often makes an appearance at each table assuring quality and satisfaction which makes this a very genuine experience. read more

This place is amazing! The staff was amazing and the food was excellent. Best restaurant eggs I've ever had! It's a cozy restaurant on a cute street where parking can be difficult. We came here early Sunday morning for breakfast. The menu here is simple and delicious. The staff was friendly and overall experience was pleasant. I got the biscuits and sausage gravy and my husband got the daily special. I knocked off a star because my husband's dish was way under salted. This was definitely the best breakfast/brunch place I've had. The portions and prices are reasonable, and the service is top notch. I felt very welcomed and it was a cozy, small little location that was so homey. Everyone that was coming in seemed like regulars, the owner was so friendly, and new comers won't feel awkward! Small but tasty little brunch spot. I came on a Sunday morning and the restaurant was completely packed - we ended up waiting nearly 40 minutes for a table, but that was also because we had a relatively "large" group of 5 people. Since there isn't much space in general, keep your party size at most 4 people, unless you don't mind a bit of a wait. Food here tasted very fresh. My friends judged me for getting the healthy Barnyard Chicken Salad (arugula, roasted chicken, pears, goat cheese, balsamic vinaigrette) for brunch but hey, the salad was delicious and they even had a bit of food envy after seeing this vibrant dish! The salad had generous amounts of juicy roasted chicken in it, which I also suspect is the same chicken used in the Chicken & Waffles. My friends who were visiting from out of the country absolutely looooved their Biscuit & Sausage Gravy and the Chicken & Waffles. Although the Chicken & Waffles doesn't use fried chicken like most traditional chicken & waffles do, my friend loved the spin on it. Sam AM is an essential organ of Paulus Hook! Their food is locally sourced, scratch-made, and freaking delicious. The owners and staff care about their patrons, and the neighborhood. When you hear the feel-good beats coming from their charming storefront, it's almost impossible not to bop in. Try everything on the menu, breakfast, lunch, or brunch you won't be disappointed. As for coffee- get the Nutella Latte there's nothing else like it. read more

Service: every person in here is incredibly friendly and attentive. This is rare for POC to experience in a restaurant. The service is amazing every time and well worth the wait. Food: I've had the egg sandwich, the pesto chicken salad, as well as the oatmeal. Each dish I would eat again! Their coffees are also incredible. Ambiance: comfortable, homey vibe. read more
With the ratings on Yelp we figured this would be a fun brunch place for a lazy Sunday and how wrong were we! The wait time which is generally 15-20 mins over the weekend and based on the reviews it seemed to be 'worth the wait'. We waited around 20 mins and when we were finally seated and placed our order it took them more than 45 mins to get the waffles out for us! This was made worse when the waffles weren't cooked as they were brought out hurriedly after we complained for the long wait. Overall a disappointing experience. On the brighter side atleast the veggie omlette was good! read more
With Brownstone overbooked, it's nice to go somewhere more intimate and less crowded on the weekends. Service was quick, easy, and the waitlist was efficient and booked through Yelp. Seated at a nice sunny window seat. Thanks for the generous avocado toast. read more
What I think is happening is places that are more suited to being a cafe are trying over extend to being a cafe plus more and suffers a bit in the process. That goes with space, food, offering and service. All that reminded me of that here. The space is cafe-esque with the small more intimate space but after seats are filled theres hardly any standing room. If its nice outside that's fine but when its not its quite cramped. That's not exclusive to here though. The menu is small also like a cafe offering a few things presumably that are done well. Being a very big chicken and waffles fan i thought I'd give it a go here especially after the staffs recommendation. The Sanam take on this entree is more of a Thanksgiving style with baked chicken rather than fried with gravy and 'cran' syrup. Sounds good and it wasn't bad, but could've been better. The food was doused with gravy and with a drizzle of syrup and could hardly taste it. The coffee was pretty good bu. On the high end -$3.xx. the meal while I appreciate the style could do with less gravy and more syrup for starters. The staff was ok but some seemed way more experienced than the others which is fine but the green in a couple of the new ones stood out. read more

Jersey City maybe the home of brunch nowadays [watch out, Montclair;)] and "sam am" is one of the favorites. At half past 7am, there was a soft line forming and when 8am hit, "Let's have breakfast!" was warmly announced by one of their crew. Luv the vibe here. Their breakfast morning hustle was cheery- chatters above the music of clattering knives&forks, mug-bumping, and chuckles of a nearby patron, or was it your server? The special that day was brisket on grits. That will never be a bad choice. Tender cuts of beef with just the right amount of sauce, so as not to overpower the perfectly cooked grits. I did splash a bit of hot sauce and it was perfect. But I ordered Biscuit and Sausage Gravy- gravy was savory and spectacular, but the biscuit was dry. I am not deterred though, my Salted Caramel Latte made up for it. Choices from the menu looked promising, so definitely have to try another weekday breakfast here. read more

I was very excited to finally try this place for brunch after hearing all the great reviews. Unfortunately my friends and I were let down. While my omelet was pretty good, I had asked for avocado to replace the bacon. The waiter agreed and when it arrived they had indeed left out the bacon and given me a cup of brownish mushy avocado. Ok, I know avocado gets brown easily but this just didn't look great and why did I have to put it in the omelet myself? Then to top it off, when I got the check they changed me an extra 2.50 for the avocado! I mean if I had known it was going to be an extra charge then I wouldn't have asked for any avocado, it wasn't that important, I just didn't want bacon. Furthermore, my friend ordered a biscuit on the side and it came out cold and without butter. She had to ask for it to be heated up and have butter. Then another in my group ordered the chicken and waffles. While the flavor was good, the dish was basically swimming in gravy so it was overpowering and did not look very pleasing. The portions were not huge but the prices were very reasonable and the coffee came with free refills. Sadly I don't know if I'd come back here unless it was just for coffee and a pastry to go. read more

Nice small place in Jersey city. My daughter and I went there for brunch around 10am. A good number of people were already on the wait list. Granted, it was a Sunday. When we got seated. It seemed crowded but it was ok. People also coming by to grab their to go orders. The experience will vary from person to person. But the service was good and also the food. read more

Grabbed a breakfast sandwich to go on the way back from the laundromat next door. I ordered the pimento sandwich - they were out of ciabatta and suggested replacing it with the sourdough bread. The fresh vegetables definitely tasted fresh and the lettuce added a nice crunch. The pimento flavor really didn't stand out to me and the sandwich ended up being a bit soggy because of all of the tomato juice and cheese. The service was quick and the employees were friendly. read more

We came here on a Saturday morning. The place is fairly tiny with a rustic decor. We were seated at the bar where there was a huge pot of tomato soup in front of us. The service was awesome, but the food was just ok. We ordered - chicken and waffles: creamy style. This looked very unappealing and the taste was just heavy with dry chicken. The waffle was soggy. It was recommended by our waiter. - pulled pork, salsa Verde, up eggs over grits. This was fairly good, but the pulled pork could have used a bit of skin to give it some crunch. - cappuccino: too much milk and not enough espresso Tldr; I really wanted to like this place but this was disappointing. The service was good, but the food just didn't quite live up to expectations. read more

A hustling, bustling hidden gem in Paulus Hook that I had tried, selfishly and unsuccessfully, to keep to myself... I gotta give Sam AM the dues and platitudes that it deserves. The space is a bit on the smaller size, you always leave smelling like bacon (which is kinda awesome for the first 5 min), but the staff there is like family and you get a feel that you really can't replicate often in Manhattan or JC. Despite its popularity, it always feels like a local and homey crowd, which is awesome and precious. I usually come by for iced espressos on my way to things, but I recently sat down again for a full meal with a camera, thus, the impetus of this review. If you're into naturally sweetened coffees, the Honey Badger Latte is a must - it is sweetened with locally sourced honey and bee pollen. The chicken and waffle, I think used to come fried, but comes as pulled chicken with chicken gravy oozing all over two square Belgian waffles. The avocado toast is customizable, so adding a little lox to the side for added protein is a nice way to pack in some good healthy fats for brunch, and the Cubano is the OG sandwich that just rocks my world. read more
