This is secretly the best restaurant in town; the rating here doesn't do it justice. I feel there is fierce competition for ratings in this tourist town and found some other restaurants are suspiciously highly rated that shouldn't be. We had a pear salad and cheese fondue as appetizers, followed by ribeye steak and roasted bone marrow. This was all wonderfully executed, the cheese fondue practically to die for. I would have liked to have another dinner here, perhaps try the duck a l'orange, but had planned on trying other places as well. Atmosphere is upscale with candlelight and service was excellent. Like thousands of visitors, we spent a day and a night in Juneau to start our UnCruise trip and after our return from it. Juneau is the small town capitol of Alaska and the businesses are heavily tourist-oriented. There are up to five of those giant cruise ships docked there each day. Salt is one of the better restaurants. It has a classy atmosphere, it is softly lighted, has a good bar and friendly wait staff. Their menu is a good one. Bear in mind that EVERYTHING in Alaska is expensive, so just adjust your pricing knowledge accordingly. We reserved a dinner reservation on their web site. Ahhhhhhh! When we arrived, the hostess had no record for us. She told us that one needs to call, or come in-person to make reservations. DO NOT RESERVE THROUGH THE WEB. YOU WILL NOT HAVE A RESERVATION IF YOU DO IT THROUGH THEIR WEB PAGE. Well, we did get a seat upstairs. Our server, Estrella, was very nice and because we had a number of questions about menu items, she was out of her depth and had to go back and forth to the bar and kitchen to answer our questions. She did not know the wines, which put her at a disadvantage, but eventually we got it figured out. We ordered glasses at $22 each. But...we also ordered our meals, so no sooner did we get our wines, but there came our entrees. The bar is really slow...not her fault. The kitchen is excellent. They know what they are doing so our orders of Black Cod ($52) and Tortellini Reggiano ($32) were super good. They have a decent menu, which includes special drinks and desserts. One step at a time. Recommend that if you go to Salt, call for your reservation, order only your beverages before anything else, then order appetizers, then order your mains/entrees, and finally your desserts and post-dinner drinks. Upon walking in, the hostess wasn't there for a while but when she did come back she was accommodating as we ended up with one more person than our reservation was for and she brought over an extra chair. The decor, menu and overall vibe gives the impression of very expensive. I also was told that it was very expensive however, there were 5 of us and 4 of us had alcoholic beverages, 4 ordered an appetizer, we all enjoyed our meals (2 had the halibut special, one had the sabil fish, one had the pork chop and I had the Tortellini) and 2 had dessert. Love with the new breakfast at Salt! They've brought their signature chill vibe and 'best-in-town' customer service to the morning hours (6 AM-10 AM). The French Toast is amazingly fluffy with a unique crunch, and the omelets are just as delicious. Free coffee with your meal is the perfect touch! It's easily the most unique breakfast menu downtown. Service is always excellent, but the menus are now way more limited and still uninventive and boring. All the fun cocktails are gone and what are left aren't yummy. The menu has NO descriptions and you don't get much information by asking. Beware that when they use singular, they really do mean ONE (even if it is cut into small pieces). Everything is insanely priced even for a swanky joint. Portions are miniscule and you can't get by on presentation only. Appetizers are not for sharing, even at $$$$$$. Desserts use low-quality chocolate (tasted like Hershey's). No special occasion celebrations offered. They really need to step up their quality to come close to justifying their prices. Had a fabulous meal last night at Salt. They were busy so we took a table in the bar and Erica took great care of us all evening. The food was fabulous! I had the spotted prawns and my hubby had the King Salmon special. Both were delicious! We also had cocktails which were delicious, mine was a unique pear concoction. Capped off the meal with pistachio cheesecake with blueberry compote. Again - delicious! Loved the atmosphere and all staff was friendly. Not a cheap meal, but if you have the funds, it's definitely worth it! It was a special treat after eating lots of bar type food on our trip. Perhaps I an jaded coming from NYC and then San Francisco but Salt did not live up to my expectations. At $60 and entree I want to be blown away. Horrible for celiacs and anyone who cannot eat wheat or has other dietary needs, such as shrimp allergy. The menu has no information, for example steak just says steak. The menu doesn't describe what else comes with the main dish, so you cannot figure out what might be gluten free. The waitress had no idea and there is no gluten free menu. The waitress literally recommended bread and pasta even after I told her twice I could not eat wheat. When she brought my plate out, my halibut was on a bed of pasta not rice, as promised. When I said I cannot eat pasta, she said, it's ok because it's egg noodles! Huh?! The waitress was clueless and could not be trusted. I finally got my halibut on rice. I ate it. But a few hours later I threw it all up. There must have been wheat or cross contamination in it. This restaurant does not serve celiac safe food and it cannot be trusted to do so. We also got the scallop appetizer and they were so overcooked they were like eating rubber. Three pieces of $28 rubber on some yellow goo. This restaurant tries to be fancy but they lack the basics including edible food. Don't eat here. read more

The crab bisque came with a red lobster biscuit right in the middle of it that you could buy and make yourself from Costco. (No authenticity). The calamari was so boring. Nothing wonderful and came with cocktail sauce that I could buy from Walmart. 0/10 on that. The crab bisque was extremely filling and a large portion, it was good but not spectacular. The filet was the best thing I had all night. However still mediocre. Basic baked potato. Best thing on the plate was the butternut squash. For a $60 dollar dish I expected more. Ps. I will note that I believe because it's the off season that they have the B team working the kitchen. I feel like during peak tourist season they bring in the A team Chefs and the food is probably better. This place was highly recommended by friends and I was expecting much more for the price I paid. Never had a bad experience at salt. I celebrated my 21st birthday here. I celebrated my one year anniversary here with my partner. I celebrated my 22nd birthday here. And I've been there a time or two just for fun. Every waitress I've ever ever had has been a super amazing. They've always given the best advice on what to get, been super honest about their menu. And always recommend great drink pairings with the food. The restaurant in general is just gorgeous, the ambience is so inviting and just stunning. In September 2025 we visited 4 cities in Alaska. The SALT restaurant in Juneau was our favorite. We choose to eat vegetarian which can be a challenge in the fish capital! This place is a gem in Juneau. Homemade linguine with clams was divine, very garlicky and completely comforting. Grilled sablefish was beautifully prepared and perfectly cooked. Not sure why this place has such a low rating: we really enjoyed! Cool space, attentive service, HUGE portion sizes. It is pricey, but not bad value. They use backlit menus, which is brilliant for dark dining rooms! The Pear Gorgonzola Walnut salad was really good. Barely any dressing and none really needed. The grilled avocado was fascinating and Kate really liked it -- I don't love do fried flour chips, but the combo of feta (the "cotija" element) and avocado and pico with a little sweetness from agave... Great flavors. My prosciutto wrapped scallops were perfectly cooked and well balanced. Brian's lamb lollipops we're great, with a good sauce. The pork chop was delectable -- good char at the corners. The vegetable Wellington was so creative and chock full of roasted veggies, but just a little doughy. Both desserts were dynamite: a decadent and perfectly rich chocolate torte (plenty for 4 of us!) and Strawberry Romanoff Parfait, which actually complimented the torte (is just saucy strawberries and whipped cream). Perfect ambience with dim lights and dark cozy colors. Bread plate was appetizing with kalamata olive bread. Prosciutto-wrapped scallops were delicious (more delicate than their bacon-wrapped cousins.) Butcher's cut (hangar steak) was delicious, tender, and nicely seasoned, and accompanied by perfect jalapeno mashed potatoes. Ok so first, a little background. Salt was recommended to my Dad and I by a friend that lives in Juneau. We went to check it out although, unfortunately, the large plate menu wasn't available until 5pm. So, we decided to make a reservation for the following night and find a place to eat in town. Ha-ha-ha that turned out to be laughable as four cruise ships were docked. There were tourists everywhere and not only were all of the dining options packed but they truly seemed like tourist traps. We walked around the pier area for nearly an hour... When 5pm rolled around we found ourselves back at Salt for a great meal, after all. I ordered the salmon and halibut crab/fish croquettes for an appetizer while my Dad had the deviled egg appetizer. For my entree I feasted on the filet mignon. I thought the food was well presented and really cooked to perfection. We even treated ourselves with ordering a delectable dessert. From the time we were seated to leaving, we had a great experience. Our waitress was a treat - super friendly and attentive. Strong 4! We started with the Cheese & Charcuterie plate, which was really nice. I had the Alaskan Halibut with the salsa verde puree and it was cooked perfectly. The puree made it! The Roasted Cauliflower was the best side. Again, travelling on business and entertaining. 2 out of the 4 of us got steaks. One got the Dry Aged Ribeye and the other got the Filet Mignon both said their's were really good. My coworker got a cold salad, Roasted Brussel Sprouts and Apples, it wasn't a hit with her, but for the most part it was very enjoyable. While visiting my friend mentioned this place since it's supposed to be the "nice" dinning option in Juneau, first try we made an rsvp which we later cancelled since our plans changed then the last night we decided to stop By since when we called they said they had no rsvp we figured pop in & see if we got lucky.. well we were seated in the downstairs area while we were seated there were maybe 6-8 tables from which 1 maybe was sat down while we ate .. no idea why "they are full" & yet no one was at the restaurant. Drinks to start had some White wine not bad, beer & martini all decent. Appetizers no complimentary bread was served seems like this is a hit or miss option what I gathered from previous reviews. We had the Calamari it was decent but they give u just a few pieces kinda unreal because of the $18 dollar price tag I mean come on they should give u more. Main dishes I had the Steak w veggies & salad this was pretty good, decent sauce hubby had the Salmon decent but not worth the price tag. Also Tried the Pappardelle pasta w chicken , which my friend had ahh this was not good she was feeling quite bloated after , her hubby had the Pork chop was not bad. I came in at a very slow time when they were just opening, so everything I ordered which was the Halibut for dinner and the strawberry shortcake for dessert, came quick and snappy. The halibut cooked at medium well which was the bar managers recommendation was like butter and tasted like fisherman's heaven. The shortcake wasn't a cake but instead cookie with strawberry sauce and frosting in the middle. I enjoyed it. It is high-end which is probably why they open at 5PM and recommend reservation. From the ambiance, to the service and show they put on, the bill came out to about $80 this included tip and taxes, without tip it came out to almost $70. Restaurants like these want you to crave more as that is the culture, of course there is controversy into all of it as you may not like that style.
