A famous place in Juneau, close to the cruise port so if this is one of your port cities...plan on visiting this iconic saloon. It's part of the history of this wonder little community and you can shop, eat, and drink! They also have a sidewalk bar set-up that you can watch the bartender make their famous Duck Fart, which people flock to get! You enter the bar/restaurant through their swinging bar doors and find sawdust on the floor, a huge bar and lots of tables. It gets crowded here and although they don't take reservations, the wait isn't usually too long. We've eaten and drank here in our past visits, this time I specifically came for a Christmas ornament (present for our doggy day care!). Highly recommend!!! read more

Red Dog Saloon -- Ketchikan, Alaska I had never been on a cruise before, and let's just say... the food and drink situation on that ship and I were NOT in a healthy relationship. I'm picky. What can I say? Then we found Red Dog Saloon in Ketchikan, and suddenly Alaska made a whole lot more sense. This place was one of the highlights of our entire trip! The people were awesome, the bartenders were fantastic, the music was great, and the atmosphere was exactly what you hope to find in an old-school Alaskan saloon. And the DECOR?! There is stuff EVERYWHERE--on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, probably hiding under the bar. You could spend half your visit just wandering around looking at everything. And then there's Wyatt's gun story... Apparently Wyatt checked his gun when he came in, but his boat left early--before the saloon opened--so he never got it back. Honestly, that might be the most Alaskan vacation story ever. There were locals mixed in with the tourists, which made it even better. And somehow, despite being cruise-ship tourists ourselves, we never felt like tourists. We just felt like we had stumbled into the coolest joint in town. Great people. Great vibe. Great music. There is an outdoor bar accessible from the streetside if you just want to try the shot. But if you want the full experience, go and have a relaxed meal inside the restaurant. A tourist trap for sure, but when in rome, or Jenaeu... We had a stop here from the cruise ship and I know locals have a love hate relationship with us. So just try not to be a jerk wherever you go. It was CROWDED. but we got a table upstairs. The service is efficient. We split a reindeer sausage sandwich (sorry Rudolph!) it was very tasty and they didn't skimp on the onions. This place is a mix of history / saloon / bar and grill / tourist attraction. It's nestled right outside the pier of the cruise ship terminal. While we were quick to get off the boat - the line built even quicker. Once inside, you'll find a floor full of sawdust and a bunch of tables squeezed in to accommodate everyone. Fear not, you won't be squished. There is a good food selection for adults and kids alike. Along with the food - which was surprisingly good - they have some great drinks. I was a fan of their root beer. Red Dog Saloon also has live music. During our visit - the singer was a mix of comical and rated R. It was funny, but had my son giggle here and there. What a fun place!!! There was a musician playing his guitar and was very good. The place is always packed. Had 2 Duck Farts! I was hesitant at first because I don't like whiskey but the shot is layered so the whiskey is on the top. Once you drink it you really don't taste the Crown Royal whiskey because the Baileys and Kahlúa are the last thing you taste. After the first one, I had to have another! They have a lot of local brews on tap. I got their Kolsch since I can't find that at a lot of places and it didn't disappoint. It's really a fun atmosphere and I definitely recommend going. The perfect quirky tourist trap place to go for lunch. Half the group had burgers, and the other half Salmon Burgers. Everyone (even the picky eater) enjoyed sitting at the bar, listening to the live entertainment, and having lunch. We wanted something not on the cruise ship terminal. What a fun place! Live music, peanut shells on the floor. All the historic stories. It looks like it's straight out of gunsmoke. Really gave you the 1800's feel. We had a waitress immediately. A group of us stopped into Red Dog Saloon during our cruise lay-over. Credit cards are accepted. A full bar and kitchen are available. Red Dog Saloon is small and packed so we had to wait to enter towards the later hours due to our party size of 7. We didn't eat during our stay but we did have a couple drinks. It was fun to look at all the business cards, patches, hats etc. covering every inch of the walls and ceiling. Floors of sawdust assist with the old-time gold rush days feel. A nice place to hang out while taking in the Alaska air. Salmon chowder and nacho were good. Customer service was quite friendly though it took a while for us to get our bill. Twenty five years later we finally made it back to the Red Dog! Sawdust still on the floor, great Alaskan paraphernalia on the walls and ceiling. DJ playing music and singing songs that were pretty much adult only and absolutely hilarious! Ordered the shrimp basket with chips and they were lightly breaded and fresh, not frozen. My with had the fish basket which consisted of lightly breaded cod and both were excellent. Our server was Monica who really took great care of us! We had to try the shots of Duck Farts which the Red Dog Saloon is famous for and they hit the spot! My IPA was stellar and my wife's Chardonnay was very good. We were in Juneau for a few short hours and then we are headed to Japan. We walked here from the cruise ship based on a friends recommendation. When you arrive, they will direct you to a table from the front door (upstairs or downstairs). The floor is covered with about 3" of sawdust fyi (fun but you're not wearing high heels in here lol) We went upstairs and had the perfect vantage point of the entire bar. Our server, Jessica was quick to take our drink orders. The season is winding down so they were out of a few things. I ordered a house wine and DH ordered Alaskan Kolsch- both tasty. We ended up ordering 1/2 pizza with reindeer sausage - I mean, why not ? It was Detroit style with the toasty chewy crust and we really liked it. It was a nice snack. The place is total kitsch- everywhere. The entertainer sang songs from Rocky Horror picture show and then a country song and then Que se ra.. all over the place and told funny jokes in between. It's a fun place to spend a few hours and just laugh. Pricing wasn't too bad either. About $50 for 2 beers, 1 wine and the 1/2 pizza. read more

The chowder was amazing! The rest of the food was pretty okay but what really set this place apart was the bartender working the shot window! He was fantastic we even stopped by a second time just to see him. They had a great assortment of Alaskan alcohol and he even talked me into doing a duck fart shot. At this time my review is solely about the side entrance. When coming in to Juneau on a cruise ship, I think it's safe to almost always expect this place to be crowded. I figured I'd give it a shot later in the afternoon, hoping being a solo may get me in a bit easier. As I walked through the saloon doors to a packed house, a gentlemen let me know if I was just there for the Duck Fart (which was of course my primary purpose for the visit!) that they had a "window" along the side of the building. When you exit the saloon doors and go around the corner, there's a tiny shop like area with merchandise and a bar area in which you can order shots. I finally got to try a Duck Fart, and for someone that is NOT a whiskey fan, I'd pop in every trip to snag one of those! As soon as you walk through the doors, you'll feel like you've enter the wild west. There are wood shavings all over the floor and old-timey decor everywhere... The theming is so spot on! To the left, you'll find a piano player adding even more to the ambiance. One of my Alaskan bucket list items was to try reindeer. I went for their reindeer hot dog and it was so good!
