Juneau has a few places that offer something: a food, a drink, a vibe...that nowhere in Anchorage, a town with roughly 10X as many people, has. This is firmly one of those. (Amalga Distillery is another) I can unequivocally say that the penicillin I had here is the best cocktail I have ever had. It wasn't good "for Juneau", it wasn't good "for Alaska", it was just good. Really good. I've had penicillins in restaurants where you can't get out without spending $100 per person, and they were nowhere as near as good as this one. Not ever close! That mix of smoke and spice and sweet was just perfectly balanced. I'm salivating just thinking about it. I also really, REALLY appreciated that the staff were knowledgeable without being gatekeepy or pretentious. That is rare for a craft cocktail bar. (I honestly would go to cocktail bars more if it weren't for the this insufferably terroir some of them seem to have) You usually here a lot of non-scientific fluff from bartenders at places like this, NOT this one though! I will be back, they made my birthday night super-special and...we didn't even tell them it was my birthday, let alone that I had just turned 40. read more

Such an amazing addition to downtown Juneau. Cozy and welcoming inside but without losing a little high end shine. It is tiny inside though. They don't call it the Narrows for nothing. The bartenders were friendly and chatty, happy to give suggestions. The cocktails were good with a couple standouts. The Mai Thai was recommended to us by the bartender and blew all the other drinks away. Flavorful, a little spiced smelled wonderful, we got two! The alpine blue was the other standout. Along the lines of a gin fizz with such amazing blueberry flavor, so fresh, and the rosemary complimented the gin beautifully. The paper plane was solid as far as paper planes go. The side car and old fashioned left a little wanting. Both seemed a touch watery, like they were left sitting on the ice slightly too long before poured. read more

First night in Juneau and we found this amazing bar. Every drink was up to the mark. Matt surprised us with one of his own creations too and it was spectacular. There was live music playing and a lot of people in the bar enjoying the return to normalcy. Order the penicillin if you like a spicy drink. You won't regret it. Now this is what a bar is supposed to be like. Cozy and full of people. It's beautiful inside and they can make anything you want. The music is good and the bartender was attentive. Will have to go back and give this place another chance. They have an interesting menu and a cool vibe, but the other patrons were rude and entitled. We came early and were actively ordering and drinking. A group came in after we had just settled in with our first round and pushed our party out to take over the couch at the rear, despite several open seats available up front. These young adults playing (cross) dress up just started encroaching and crowding us out without a word to us. Had they been polite, we might have felt better about accommodating a request. I met my friend here, and it got busier as the hour wore on. Good view of downtown from the window. It really is "narrow" in here and has the atmosphere of a speakeasy. Felt a little out of place, as I don't really drink much, but the bartender suggested he could tone down the vodka for me. To be honest, I was fine with a water (such a party pooper I know, but I don't mind a good atmosphere and a lively conversation every now and then). My friend got the dark and stormy- dark rum, lime, and ginger for $10. Most of the specialty cocktails ran in the $11-12 range, which is a little over the top. They do have a wide variety of alcohol, and they said they are planning to expand for a kitchen in the back. (As of right now, if you have a large gathering or birthday party and call ahead of time, they can arrange for some creme brulee's for your group). The best part was watching the bartender at work. Overpriced, overrated, underserved, and underwhelming. That about sums up "the Narrows." We were recommended this place presumably because of the whole "mixology" fad which has apparently hit even Juneau. However, there's no real logical reason for going to this bar unless you just want to feel like a pretentious d****bag. Aside from the expensive cocktails (which I presume were milked from the frothy loins of God himself, aged over a decade in oak barrels, and hand-crafted in a shaken mixture with Campari and moose urine) - the bartender was an utter nightmare. We came to the Narrows optimistic and open-minded, but that changed when the hipster calling himself a bartender (but looking more like a disgruntled colonial reenactor) was incredibly rude to us simply because we asked for a recommendation. I'll take the modest, reasonably priced, friendly bar across the street from the Narrows any day. read more

I dig this place for the great whiskey selection and chill atmosphere. Juneau doesn't have a lot of spots for mixed drinks and whiskey enthusiasts. While this place might not stand out somewhere else, it holds a place in my heart enough that I go each time I'm in town (that's every couple of weeks). The bartenders and patrons are cool and it's a nice looking place, a bit more upscale than the bars all around it. Only downside is they don't serve food. Not really a big deal given the multitude of eateries around.
