Went to Sal's around 3 PM on a Sunday afternoon and there was a wait of about 15 minutes though all the tables were not occupied. Our server was friendly, though hesitant to make any recommendations or share any opinions about the food, other than her love of the limoncello cake because 'it is light.' We tried the eggplant and chicken Parmesan because it sounded interesting and unlike offerings at other Italian restaurants. It was unique and fun to try, but I don't think I would get it again. It was quite heavy on the breading and there was a generous portion of cheese and sauce. We asked if we could substitute a salad in place of the spaghetti that it came with and our server did indicate they offer garlic sautéed spinach or broccoli so we selected the broccoli. She did not inform us that it came at an extra charge, though we would have still been happy to pay it, it's just nice to be informed ahead of time of any additional cost. I definitely recommend the cannolis as the filling was thick and creamy and not overly sweet and the entire shell was dipped in chocolate!
This was our first time here & we came in wanting to order to go. The cashier was SO nice! I can see how this place is a local favorite. We decided to go with 3 cheese slices. It was pretty busy in there but when our order was finally ready, she apologized for the wait, gave us an extra slice AND a free cheesecake. For just being plain cheese, their pizza is perfection! The homemade cheesecake was delicious too!
I was born and raised in NYC so I'm used to NY pizza which means I was on the hunt for good pizza when I moved to AZ. I heard several people mention Sal's Gilbert, especially their baked ziti pizza, which was said to be the closest to NY pizza they've had out here. I can confirm that it did not disappoint! It's certainly one of the closest to NY pizza that I've tried out here so far. I've had it several times by pickup or to go, and it's still just as good every time, so they've very consistent.
I'd been hearing so much about this place, so I decided to check them out by ordering some slices to go since I was in the area. I was immediately greeted by a nice lady that answered a question I had about a particular option for a slice. I came to learn it was called a tri-color sicillian. Since I like Sicilian pizzas, I decided to try the tri color sicillian, a plain cheese sicillian and a regular pepperoni slice. She even offered me a glass of ice water while I waited, but I declined. After about 15 minutes or less, my order was ready. When I got home, I was surprised to see i didn't get what I ordered completely: 1 slice of sicillian cheese, 1 regular slice of cheese & a regular slice of pepperoni. Shame on me for not checking the order before I left...but I can't even tell what I paid for since the receipt was only the cc copy receipt. While the pizza was pretty good, my experience was tainted since, 2 of my slices were not what I wanted, that is why I had to take it down from 3 star minimum. I don't think I can honestly recommend to my friends and will not stop by if in the area again.

From the hosts to the servers, bartenders, and management--everyone is consistently welcoming, attentive, and professional. It's the kind of place that makes you feel taken care of without being over the top. One thing I really appreciate is how well they handle all types of dining. Whether you're stopping in for a quick slice at the counter, sitting down for a full meal, or grabbing something to go, they always have a wide variety of fresh slices ready. There's never a shortage of options, which makes it easy to try something new--or stick with your favorites. Lately, I've been loving the chicken Caesar slice and the chicken carbonara slice--both packed with flavor and perfectly balanced. I had my eye on their taco slice this time, but ended up going with my go-to: the Chicken Francese. I always add artichokes and capers and have it served over spinach, and it's phenomenal every single time. It's one of those dishes you just don't mess with. We started the table with calamari, garlic knots, and arancini--everything came out hot, fresh, and exactly what you want from classic Italian starters. My son ordered the antipasto salad with added chicken, which was a great portion (especially for an active teen) and full of fresh ingredients. We also grabbed a couple of slices, including pepperoni--because honestly, why mess with perfection? It's always solid. Sal's is just one of those places you can count on. Great food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere every time. It's definitely in our regular rotation--and for good reason.
The food was delicious and the service was on point. My husband was quick with the calamari, so I didn't get the chance to take a picture. Everything was fresh and full of flavor. The music was at a perfect level great for conversation and the ambiance was very pleasant. Our server was very attentive to our needs. I once ordered pizza to go and thought, this must be even better dining in, and I wasn't wrong. Best of all, it's worth the drive even though it's a bit far from our home.
We had 4 years to think about Sal's, so glad we made it back to the area to have Sals awesome offerings. We ate here twice this visit. 1st meal. I had the Meatball sub which had the perfect ration of meatball to bread and sauce and melty cheese. Could not have been better. Sis had Spaghetti and meatballs, also very good. Great sauce. 2nd meal. We ordered the upside down Sicilian pizza with meatballs which was impressive. The lite bready crust was delicious and cheesy and sauce. The real winner that meal though was the pasta-Linguine Gamberi E Salsiccia. Fat juicy shrimp, sliced sausage, tomato, peas and a creamy wine sauce, terrible pic taken because we couldn't wait to dig in. It was so, so yummy. We did have the antipasta salad with balsamic dressing which was also phenominal.
Since recently relocating to Arizona my wife and I have been taking in the local favorites. However we have yet to find a decent pizza. Up until now. Sals may be known for pizza . However it's a Full service Italian sit down. Large or Small groups. They also have call in Togo and host a full bar with TV's for sports. The place is loud. The food & bar on point. Service prompt but only fair. Again very busy. Pizza by the slice is huge for me. But there NYC thin crust is legit as is Thick Crust ( Detroit) is bomb. Fresh Hot Balanced. Crust on both perfect.
My husband and I came to visit family in Arizona and they suggested we meet at Sal's Gilbert Pizza. We went during lunchtime, no waiting for a table. Dining area was nice, and the service was excellent. They have a nice variety of pizza to choose from, including, pizza by the slice. They are known for their Baked Ziti Pizza, ziti pasta on top of a pizza crust and a vodka sauce. My husband ordered one slice of the ziti pizza, although, he said it was tasty he did say it was a little rich for him. I ordered a slice of pizza with mushroom and black olives, delicious. I found their pizza sauce to be excellent!! We also ordered the angel hair pasta with olive oil and garlic, highly recommend!! Everything was great, we're looking forward to coming back on our next visit.
Finally got to try the famous Sal's pizza! We took it for to go, but as soon as we saw the place, we're like we gotta try eat here. There were so many yummy and unique pizzas there and it seems like we could order by slices as well. We got to try white sauce pizza, and it was sooo good! Generous amount of cheese and ricotta. Yummmmm. And there were pizza with chicken caesar salad as toppings, gotta try it next time!
Man, been coming here for years. On our recent visit, we ordered ahead and took it home. 5 minute drive from home. Medium pepperoni lovers pizza, side caesar salad, pappardelle pasta and an anti pasta side salad. Man. Disappointed in the pizza, mostly in the lack of toppings, and the sauce honestly tasted eh. The wife's pasta was a clump of noodles with sauce. Salads were tiny compared to being in the restaurant. Granted, this was also a birthday dinner. Ugh. We've ordered to go before, and have loved the food. We will give it another try, but probably not for a bit.
We love Sal's! We visited today and had a great experience as a party of seven. Our party was served by Holly who was fantastic! As a large group with appetizers and entrees, she didn't miss a beat and our drinks were always filled. I sampled their cheesy garlic knots and the Sicilian style rice ball. The rice ball was one of the best one I've had in a long time, especially being fancied up Sicilian style. We also shared a pepperoni pizza. I love their pizza, but specifically their crust. It's so light and almost fluffy? You can also tell that they use top-notch ingredients--they don't skimp on quality at Sal's. My only complaint is that they are all the way in Gilbert!
I came in during lunch on a Tuesday and they offer a great lunch menu. You order at the counter, pay and they provide you with your number. You are able to sit in any of the two sides of the restaurant. They offer outdoor seating but it appears it's for larger parties. The tables are long. I order the lunch combo: 1 cheese slice, 6 garlic knots and drink for $10.88 after tax. The staff brought my pizza slice and informed me my garlic knots would be out soon since they were making a fresh batch. The marinara sauce was missing some salt but they had table salt so that was an easy fix. My food was hot, I enjoyed the food and felt the combo was a good portion.

I've been hearing this is the best in the E Valley. I cannot agree more!!! I tried what most call a "tomato pie." Sal's calls it upside down pie. Sicilian style. Either way, it was an amazing slice! I typically add some grated parm, Italian seasoning and black pepper, (They have them), this pie needed nothing!!! 8.5 rating. Portnoy scale. Which means excellent!!! The other slice was a Neopolitan cheese slice. With added basil. I love good basil pie. Again, fantastic!!! Scored 8.5. I'll go back and try some Italian foods as everything coming out of the kitchen looking non nom nom!!! read more

I went with my dad he's been wanting to go for over a year I came into town from LA and omg we loved it! I ordered a Caesar salad a white pizza slice with a slice of cheese pizza he ordered a whole Margherita pizza ! We ate everything and we didn't feel bloated or tired !! Very clean ingredients! The boy bussin tables was very nice and helpful the lady in front was patient ! Just loved the whole experience I would definitely recommend! The fact we didn't feel the itis or bloated shows how clean the ingredients are ! read more

Seven of us came in and we didn't mess around we ordered half the menu. I had the rice balls (perfect, crispy outside, soft inside), and I've had the cheese manicotti before always on point. Around the table we had spaghetti and meatballs, baked ziti, and clams over angel hair pasta the works. Nobody left a crumb. This isn't my first time at Sal's and it won't be my last. I've been coming here since I moved here from NYC. I'm from New York City, and let me tell you something finding a real New York slice in Phoenix isn't easy. Sal's is the real deal. The crust, the sauce, the fold it's right. Sal himself? Hard-working guy. You can taste when someone cares about what comes out of that oven. And the waitress yesterday I'm sorry I don't remember her name she was fantastic. On top of everything, friendly, patient with seven of us ordering like we hadn't eaten in a week. Been craving pizza since last week and finally went and got it today. I've ordered from Sal's before in the past and had the baked ziti, chicken marsala, margherita and chicken pesto pizza slices. Also had the garlic knots and mini cannolis. I think I remember liking everything I've ordered in the past. It was pretty busy today around 12:45. There were groups waiting for a table and a few waiting on take out orders. I placed an order as soon as I got there. I think it was about 25mins before the order came out which isn't bad at all. They even offered to help me take it out to the car if needed. My order: Large 1/2 Grace's Grandma Pizza, 1/2 Drunken Grandpa Pizza Large Supreme (no cheese) 1 slice Tricolore Mini Cannolis Drunken Grandpa and Grace's Grandma were delicious!! I would get these two again. The Tricolore wasn't bad but it's a thicker pizza. I prefer regular or thin crust. The sauce on it was tasty though. Cannolis are always good! I'll be back for the Grandma/Drunken Grandpa pizzas again read more
I'm glad we chose Sal's for a friend's birthday lunch yesterday. Sal's Gilbert Pizza is a family owned and operated restaurant. After moving from California in 2006, Sal and Grace opened this pizzeria. The dining process is simple, You order and pay at the counter, find a seat then your items will be brought to you. There is a self-serve soda bar in the dining room making for a laid back, easy going atmosphere. The staff didn't smile and were not hospitable. It could be because they were slammed with take out orders so I get that, but a bit of friendliness would have added another star to this review. I picked the $10.99 lunch special of a side salad and cheese pizza slice. I opted for the upgrade of a $1 to pick one of their specialty slices. I was tickled to see their creative pizza varieties offered by the slice! -chicken caesar salad -chicken chicken cacciatore -taco -baked ziti -chicken pesto and margherita to name a few! The salad was a generous size but pretty standard. I didn't care for it. My chicken cacciatore slice was tasty but the crust was very soft and the sauce/toppings runny. I specifically picked this one because I saw them bringing the whole pie into their serving case as I ordered. Good just not great in my opinion. I would like to visit again and try different slices of their specialty pizzas. read more
I first heard of Sal's Gilbert Pizza from a segment from a PBS show in Phoenix that was posted on a Phoenix forum called "Check Please!" For those who are interested, here's the link. If only... We came for an early dinner on a weeknight. The staff is nice. Our wait for a table wasn't long at all. Sal's struck me as a neighborhood restaurant --- the kind of place where if you become a regular, they get to know you---a rather unassuming spot. We decided to start with 2 shareable appetizers. One of our grandsons wanted calamari, which caused his Dad to ask "What is calamari?" We explained it to him. For a second appetizer, we ordered the fried zucchini, the "Check Please!" segment made it sound like it was great. Our server was friendly and well versed when it came to the menu. We decided to get a pizza and she suggested getting the XL size as there were six of us. We got a half and half pizza, one half was Margherita while the other half was pepperoni and mushroom As for the food---the calamari was overcooked and on the rubbery side, still edible but not great. The fried zucchini was nothing to write home about. The pizza was a disaster. We all thought it should have stayed in the oven a bit longer and there was too much tomato sauce on it. My husband grabbed the spatula to get a slice of Margherita. Careful as he was, he ended up with tomato sauce on his shirt. We all left feeling disappointed. It didn't live up to the hype---not even close. It left me wondering what went wrong here? Are they resting on their laurels? In other words, did success go to their heads? Or, did we hit them on a rare bad day? Whatever the reason, we weren't impressed and all of us agreed, we didn't want to return. read more
Stopped here for lunch and this place was hopping. I was kind of shocked at the constant stream of customers. I love that they sell pizza by the slice. They have some truly different types. They have a massive Caesar salad pizza and a cheeseburger pizza with all the trimmings. I stuck with my usual supreme and pepperoni and they tasted great. I love New York style pizza with the thin crispy crust. Service was great and they have some other selections that I'll definitely be back to try. read more

I was born and raised in Gilbert and remember when Sal's opened in 2006. I moved away in 2007 and returned this year. I took my son for the 1st time tonight. The place has evolved so much and for the better. My son's grandparents are from NY so he was so happy and smiled with that first bite. The pizza is even better than I remember. We ordered to go and walked right to the counter and our order was ready. The ambiance was so cozy and really such a joy to see that they are still going strong all these years. read more

This is definitely not the best pizza in Arizona. The regular slice had a flop, was undercooked and the sauce just tasted off. The Sicilian slice was better, but that sauce was just bad. Two slices for $11 is not really special either. Whoever Sal is, he needs to take a trip to the Big Apple and start over. read more

ALWAYS an amazing experience! We had the vodka pasta pizza, garlic knots and fried ravioli, the vodka sauce is amazing, and the rest of the food is serially out of this world! Oh, and don't forget to grab a black and white cookie on your way out! The service is always top notch, and the atmosphere is busy and full of east coasters and Arizonans. I have long searched for a restaurant that could match the authentic New York Slice you'd get in the city, and trust me when I say Sal's is as authentic as it can get! They have become my go to spot when I'm looking for quality Italian food, and just walking into the restaurant you'll know they are the real deal(and Guy Fieri approved!) Authentic authentic!! The atmosphere is heavenly and the food is even better. The Baked Ziti Pizza is why I came. I always get my pizza and spaghetti on the side to put it on my pizza, so the fact that I found a place that already has that style made I'm in!!! I'm eating the ziti pizza as we speak and I can't help but giggle is so darn good haha. I even drizzled a bit of ranch!! The deep dish style has an amazing crunch to it. The garlic knots are a must wow soooo doughy. This place gets packed so make sure you get a reservation. Might be the best pizza I've ever had. read more
Finally made it in to try a couple slices. Now the pepperoni slice certainly left a lot to be desired. Tasty yes but certainly I've had better. The spaghetti slice was exceptional. Service was awesome at the bar. Price for their combo is terrific. Big busy place. Losing stars cause I wouldn't go back for the pepperoni and that's what I usually order when getting a slice someplace. Earlier this month, my sister from NY was telling ME about a pizza place here that she heard great things about. A thing about New Yorkers - they love to tell you about real NY food. I know this because I, too, am a former NYer (haha!) But she had a friend of a friend who worked here, and it was like seeing two old friends meet again. The camaraderie of NYers who are OUT of NY is always so fun to see. So aside from the fabulous service, we received.. the pizza was INCREDIBLE and literally a taste of home. We ordered a Grandma pizza, White pizza, and Margherita pizza for all my visiting family to share and eat. I definitely will be back now that I know about it and the quality is outstanding. Don't ask me what I'm thinking about because my answer will be Sal's Gilbert Pizza's Tiramisu Martini for a WHILE. We got here around 7:30 on a Tuesday night and there was a decent wait, so we opted for seats at the bar. While it was busy, it wasn't loud so we could still enjoy company. They even had tvs so we watched parts of the basketball game that was on. Every night they do a different special (besides Monday when they're closed) which we didn't end up ordering, but was nice to see. Our bartender was super friendly and was kindly answering all of my questions about the menu. I started with the tiramisu martini and let me tell you, I will not stop telling my friends about this drink. It was sweet but light and was an amazing treat before having dinner. My boyfriend kept stealing it from me to drink because he loved it too. We ordered half baked ziti and half spaghetti and meatballs pizza which was delicious. I think the textures were so fun and the pastas made the pizza more rich and filling. I loved the crispy thin crust - it reminded me of New York pizza. I think being able to do half and half is so nice and lets everyone get to try something they want. We ended up getting a large and took 4 pieces home. If you haven't tried this pizza spot yet - add it to the top of your list. You will LOVE it! read more

The Yelp website indicates that you take reservations, however I have been coming here for many years and that has not been the case. Can you clarify whether or not you take reservations?
Thank you for reaching out. Yes we do accept reservations. We do take a limited amount, weekends do tend to fill quick. I suggest to call a week in advance for the weekend otherwise during the week you can try same day.

Can you get pizza by the slice at dinner time, or is that just a lunch special offer?
Yes, but only whatever is Available at the time.
Can you buy Sal's hot wing sauce by the bottle? It's amazing.
No, unfortunately you cannot.
Are there any vegan options?
Yes we do. We have pasta that can be made with garlic and oil with sautéed broccoli or marinara. Salads. Sautéed spinach and broccoli. We can also make a cheese less pizza.
I looked at the menu and i didn't see the linguine with clam sauce , seafood marinara or mussels marinara... do they still offer them?
Yes. That’s part of out daily specials. We can make that anytime. Thank you
