Eva is a hidden treasure for Men hair cuts just off Lawrence Ave on Damen. I had walked past this salon for years and then today decided to give her a try. Awesome ! She took her time asking me what I wanted and then delivered a great cut including 'real barber razor' used on back neck area.The edges were razor tight. An absolute steal for under $20. I was so dissapointed. I can't even begin to tell you the feeling of wasted time. I go in I loved the highlights but I hated that half my head was orange. My left side was showing orange as the girl added highlights very late into my lighting. I specifically said I dont want the orange looking hair. Ok we will fix it... I had walked out with a full head of orange hair. I was so annoyed and embarrassed to even go out.... I went right back in and they corrected the hair, I cried... I really enjoyed my highlights the light hair was fun for me, I just couldn't stand the orange spots. My hair is so dark now and yes you can see some highlights. My scalp is killing me and I am sure my hair will feel like hay for the next few months. I'm sad.. but I am glad it's not orange. Overall I like them. I'm just a bit frustrated. I had been with the same salon/stylist for over 5 years and truly loved loved my stylist! However, I decided to get smart with my money, recently and no longer wanted to pay $300 (plus) bucks, every 4-5 months for my hair, upkeep. I have long hair... my typical 3-5 month service includes: highlights, low lights, gray coverage and a trim. I searched online for something a bit more affordable and found Eva. I called her and we set up an appointment. Upon meeting, I was a bit taken a back as the shop is a bit run down and family members are hanging around, inside the salon, playing on phones and U tube. It was just new to me, that's all. Not what I've been used to. Her daughter is lovely and so very friendly... we chatted and laughed together. : ) A real cutie. Not going to lie... If i schedule a salon visit, I'm expecting things to be perfect, from check in, to exit. This is not a boujee salon. Do not expect that. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT, HOWEVER: A Stylist who, KNOWS HAIR. A Stylist who, listens to your requests. A Stylist who, honors what you're looking for. A Stylist who, charges fair pricing. Do yourself a favor and keep on walking. The inconsistency of cuts (for men at least) you'll receive at this place is staggering. It doesn't matter what you ask for, the stylists here will give you the same cut, every time, regardless of if your hair grows different. This is basically a day care. I've put it up with this for a few months cause of the economy of the cost. However, each stylist brings in their 1-2 kids while they work. Children constantly come up to them asking for their phones, interrupting the cut. Today was the last straw. Went in for a cut. She told me to sit down. The usual day care environment. After waiting 15 minutes for the one stylist on duty to finish up a cut, she started on a new kid's haircut. Didn't even bother to communicate there was a queue. I went here on a Sunday because I was dreading trying to do my own hair for a wedding that night given the humidity. I chose L&E mainly because they were open on a Sunday and had awesome reviews on Yelp. Admittedly, if it hadn't been for the reviews, I am not sure I would have tried it. I am so thankful I did though and look forward to going back. Eva was very friendly, the salon was very clean and full of my favorite products (even my favorite Moroccan oil- yay!), and most importantly my hair looked fabulous. I had Eva cut my hair last night and I am SO happy, such a great cut. She listened to what I wanted and made a couple suggestions, and I'm glad I put my trust in her ideas. I've had my hair cut in Chicagoland many times, and I've had some hairdressers that don't seem confident in what they're doing - and have done a terrible job. Eva was the exact opposite, and it feels awesome when you have confidence in the person cutting your hair! Eva's also very personable and fun to chat with and though we just met, there was no awkwardness. The salon is nothing fancy, but they use really good product, and the haircuts there are very affordable - $20 for the cut, an extra $15 to blow dry & style. Definitely worth it. Eva, my wonderful hairstylist, just opened her own salon with her partner Lidia, so I am updating my review here.: I just got my sixth or seventh haircut from Eva today. When she first cut my hair, I was unsure of it, but I got several compliments on it right away and then it turned out that it was the best wash and wear style for my wavy curly hair that I've probably ever had. It got me through one of the hottest, most humid, frizziest summers in a few years, and instead of doing the Roseanne Rosanna Danna summerheat fuzz pyramid it usually does, my hair had quite a bit more layered guidance and curled and waved beautifully through the season. I am still very happy with it! And all of this satisfaction only cost $20 a cut (plus tip). (She also does eyebrow threading for $8 and mani-pedis are available on weekends for $30, by the way.) read more

This normally wouldn't be a place I would walk into if it weren't for the reviews. I've gotten my hair cut at expensive places before but Eva did a better job, partially because she didn't have to go through an interview process to open up her own place. A lot of stylists aren't as comfortable as she was (another reviewer mentioned it was confidence.) I have to say though, this would be akin to going to a dive bar and finding out that they brew their own beer. It's not a setting for princesses. The chair where they wash your hair sits a little too low and is a bit uncomfortable. Their coffee is served out of styrofoam cups. this place was DISGUSTING -- it was incredible dirty, disorganized and there was hair everywhere, including the cash register counter! i set my purse down on the counter and left with a bunch of hair stuck to it! EWWWWWWW!!! when i mentioned that they had hair on their counter, they just shrugged and did nothing. then a week later when i had to return, there was still hair everywhere, including the counter. and each time i was there, they had no ppl in there and at least 2 stylists sitting around doing nothing. how about sweeping???? how does cut hair from a bunch of different ppl find its way all the to the display case for over a week? by NEVER CLEANING UP. they also DONT KNOW ANYTHING about hair. i made an appointment specifically for a hair glaze or gloss, and when i got there, suddenly no one had even heard of it! this happened 2 other times when my appointment was reschedule for a stylist who could have possible heard of a glaze. i actually had to google hair glaze and show them a few articles on my phone. they rescheduled me twice b/c each appointment was with someone who didn't know what it was, and the rest of the salon had never heard of it. PLUS they only have permanent color, which i cant use since im growing my hair out for charity. they also kept misplacing my appointment. the 3 times i showed up (all for one appointment), and despite having no one in there each time, they were absolutely baffled that i had an appointment, and kept asking me why i was there. really?? they had a notebook they wrote appointments down! the last person i had an appointment with kept apologizing saying that the salon owner doesnt like to accommodate customers and didnt know what she was doing. i had a groupon and groupon only refunded me a credit! also, ive noticed some of the good reviews are written by the ppl who work there! in my experiences (3 attempts for 1 hair cut that never ended up happening), the bad reviews are completely accurate! i suspect they just got a bunch of friends to write positive reviews, b/c there is NO WAY those reviews are about the same place! i wish i could post pictures, but i took some pics of the filth and hair -- it was that shocking and disgusting! I've walked by L&E Salon too many times to count and I never gave it a second thought. That was until I needed to get my brows threaded. Luckily yelp came to the rescue recommending a great place around the corner from my house at a decent price. What's not to like about paying $8 plus a tip. I'm sure you could find cheaper but the quality would be lacking. I walked in and was greeted right away. I was shown to the back area and had my brows threaded. I'm so lucky to have found this place! I first Came here because was close to home and great reviews. I highly recommend Eva as a hair stylist. She is the only stylist in Chicago I let cut my hair. She does a wonderful job, and Everytime I get a hair cut or style from her I get a ton of compliments. Also she uses Morrocon oil products on my hair and I love them. The salon is affordable to compared to some of the other pricier salons in lakeview. I visited Eva for the first time this weekend and feel like I hit the jackpot! I moved to Chicago over 6 months ago, and could not believe the prices that salons were charging for a haircut and color. Because I have a pixie cut and am 80% gray, I require both every 5 weeks. I found Eva through groupon and had her cut my hair. She did an outstanding job for less than half of what I would pay in an upscale salon. She uses quality product and I was so pleased with her work. She was very kind and considerate. The salon itself is average (which is why the 4 stars instead of 5), nothing fancy or upscale, but I care more about the quality and price of my hair cut than they setting so that did not bother me at all. I moved to Chicago from California three years ago. Though I've been to plenty of lovely salons here, I am Latina and have a very thick head of wavy, unruly, very difficult to deal with hair, and have thus had a really difficult time finding someone who knows what to do with it. I was fortunate to have found Alicia. A fellow Latina, she knew exactly what to do with my hair and works very quickly while being super warm and friendly. This is by no means the fanciest salon you will step into, but if what you are looking for is good service and a good value, I would highly recommend. read more

I'm giving two stars because everyone was very nice and this review is quite late. I went in to get my eyebrows threaded quickly on a whim since it's close to my house. There was only one person working, which is fine i'm a former stylist and understand how things work. Unfortunately, there was also children running around, which again i'm a former stylist so I understand things happen, but the noise level was through the roof! The children were jumping on things, screaming, etc. I assume it was from boredom and can really blame them. The threading takes place in a back room, which seemed clean and nice. My HUGE problem with the service is; I came in asking just to follow the original shape just clean up, when I came out I barely had eyebrows. I actually like to have the appearance of having something there and not just two thin lines. I thought I was just being self-conscious but when I went into work the next day everyone asked what happened. It was a week before my birthday and all I can say is thank god for eyebrow pencils. I had been going to the Hair Cuttery at Lincoln and Damen prior to trying this place out. Never again!! L and E is great. They do great work and they are very reasonably priced. The girl who did my hair was meticulous and spent extra time on the back of head shaping the hairline and even finished with a straight razor and some kind gel or cream on the edge of my hairline. Nice attention to detail! And the cut was outstanding. I actually went back the next day because I wanted my bleached blond hair a little more white, less yellow and she was happy to oblige, free of charge. I work nearby so L&E is a really convenient and great place - I've been going for almost a year now. Usually I get my eyebrows threaded and upper lip waxed. Lidia is the one who usually takes care of me (I tend to visit on days when she's working, but that's mostly a coincidence) and I've also had Eva do my eyebrows once. They are both fantastic! The threading is quick and close-to-painless, they will pluck to get the missed hairs and trim with scissors if necessary. For the price (and for more) it's definitely worth the service. L&E Salon was a great experience. The salon recently opened in Ravenswood right past Lawrence on Damen. The two ladies who own the shop Eva and Lidia were extremely friendly and nice. Their shop opened about a month ago so I decided to stop in on this rainy Friday night to see if they could do a cut and color and for how much. We agreed on a price of fifty dollars for both which I thought was extremely fair. We got started right away and Eva showed me the color book with the hair swatches and helped me match a nice color for spring.. She was fast and accurate with the color application and I am very pleased with the way it turned out. She cut my hair with the razor shears which gave my bob some nicely added layers. Over all I'd say sh did a really good job. This is not a high end salon, but it is high quality. Give L&E a try because they are totally worth it. read more

Never again. Let me just start off with the basics: 3 days ago I had long, ombre colored hair...today I won't even take my hair out of the pony tail. With spring here, I was ready for my "spring chop." I bought their groupon and thought I'd finally find my Chicago stylist after all the awesome things Yelp had to say. After I'm seated, (20 minutes late) I showed David a picture of the (two different) recent times I had chopped my hair so he could see the length/style, and most importantly, color. I honestly don't think he looked. I very specifically said i didn't want yellow, streaky highlights---and that's exactly what i have. Let me just explain how this 4.5 hour appointment went. Yes. 4.5 hours. After I showed the picture, David was MIA for a good 10 minutes just chatting. He came back and apparently remembered I was there, and left to go mix the color. So I went to the bathroom while I waited more--HUGE mistake. Not only was it disgusting and without a working sink--I saw where they mixed their color--and it looked like a child's art counter. Just scary and unprofessional. We finally get things going and he starts foiling my head in THE weirdest pattern i have ever seen. Mind you, at one point he asked how long it had been since I had died my hair...after I had already told him the top portion was purposefully died brown for my current style. I should've just left then. After talking about me to his coworkers in Spanish (which I also speak) and rolling his eyes, and leaving to chat for another 10 minutes (not for more color, either) WHILE MY HEAD WAS ONLY HALFWAY FOILED...I was counting the minutes until I could leave. After he was done, he didn't put me under a heat-lamp,oh no. He instead started cutting hair for the walk-ins...I literally watched him do 4 hair cuts. He kept telling me that the color wasn't ready, and eventually literally had to start washing out the back so it wouldn't over process. After 3 hours, I explained how waiting this long was unacceptable, and he started ripping all of the foils out my head immediately. So now half of my hair is lighter than the other because of that and the way he set up the foils. As if that process wasn't bad enough, my haircut was horrible. The scissors he used weren't sharp, so it took ages, and I kid you not, I had stairs in my hair...just blatant chopping and all different lengths. I pointed out finally that I wasn't happy and that one side was (obviously) longer than the other...and his response? "Your head is crooked." I literally started crying. Never have I ever cried in a salon. So another stylist takes over, and fixes some of the damage that's been done to the haircut, but its no where near the pictures I showed, or what I expected from a salon that had such rave reviews. Have been coming to this salon for about 4yrs. Eva has always done an excellent job on my hair! However, the last couple of times I've gone she is NEVER there! A few months ago, I made an appointment to specifically have her cut my hair, when I got there she was gone! I found this upsetting since I went there to see her. Anyway, since I was already there I had her assistant Rosario cut my hair and she did a great job, I walked out happy. It's been some time now and I needed another trim so I went back to this salon a few days ago and Eva wasn't there(what else is new?) So another girl named Jackie cut my hair. She cut it wet so it was hard to tell what it was going to look like dry. I wanted layers with a side swept fringe. Needless to say, when I got home and blow dried my hair, I noticed she didn't cross check her work at all! I'm very unhappy with the cut! The fringe is all over the place, when I brushed the bang out there are long hairs mixed with short it's horrible! This girl has absolutely no clue what she's doing!
