(We were lucky to get in last minute with a major football game falling at the same time as our appointment). The interior of the nail salon is so calming, love the soft lighting, the pleasant background music on, TV with close captioned Golden Girls going and bohemian interior with its crystal chandeliers, Moroccan stencils on one window, subway tile on a wall, and French chic pieces throughout. You don't feel like you're in a nail salon. Estella and Michelle did our honey and milk spa pedicures (the upgrade was worth it) and regular manicures. Both were great and our paws and hands feel so much better as a result. I wish this salon existed back home... I love the little touches as well on how this salon supports good causes and takes the longer route to remove gel versus electric filing which always feels like it damages the top of my nail. I understood that they had no availability until Saturday, so I politely asked about booking for the following week and whether I could make the appointment online. The way it was said came across as rude and dismissive, almost as if they did not want my business. I believe every potential customer deserves to be treated with respect, whether there is availability that day or not. I came in ready to support this business, but after the way I was spoken to, I will take my business somewhere that makes customers feel welcome and appreciated.

Highly recommend!! Before this place I was going to the same hair stylist for EIGHT years but I had to move to the city and you can just imagine how frustrated I was to find another hair stylist. Jose, the owner was recommended to me from a friend and instantly, I was another long term customer on his chair. He's always in a contagious good and humble mood. The place is clean, recently renovated, reasonably priced and the catchy Spanish/English music in the background is always suiting. Love. Like the song says "All you need is love..."…read more And I love Ken. Which basically means that all I need in life is Ken. Because Ken does great hair. Sorry, let me rephrase that- Ken is MOTHER F-ING AWESOME at doing hair. I first went to him last October to fix my terribly flat and terribly misbehaving hair. My hair is....schizophrenic would be the best and most favored term. It does the whole "I can't decide between being straight, curly, or wavy" thing. Which means that every morning I usually do the whole "Bitch I'm bunning you" thing. (Bunning=Putting hair in a bun. It also sounds like some sort of sexual perversion.) Ken fixed it. He trimmed it, layered it, did some Ken Magic and everything was wonderful. I held off on reviewing until Haircut # 2. And I'm actually really glad I did. Because if I thought Haircut # 1 was awesome, Haircut # 2 was PURE GENIUS. I decided on a Tuesday that I was sick of my nasty frizz mop for good so I called Ken and booked an appointment for the next day. Walked into the salon, told him I was "Chopping this shit off" and that he could do what he wanted. Which he did (although not without discussing it with me first to make sure I was down). Any man that can make my hair look this FABULOUS deserves...I don't know...a special place in heaven or a mansion in Miami. Or something. He made suggestions, took charge, made sure I was OKAY with the suggestions, took charge some more and a few (okay many) snippity snips later I walked out of the salon feeling like a Sex Goddess (minus the ability to orgasm on command). On the train ride home men kept staring at me (okay it was one man in an empty train car but he was pretty cute albeit a little on the young side). I haven't felt this stunningly fabulous in years and three weeks later I am STILL loving the sex that is my hair. So basically Ken=Love. And we could all use a little more of that.

It seems it really depends on who is cutting the hair but also who is supervising apprentices. I first heard of Smith Davis 10 years ago when I came in for various pixie cuts. I do remember being listened to, and saw my experiences as a collaboration between the customer, apprentice, and teachers. I walked out each time happy with my hair. I also came once for a curly cut with a regular stylist and was very happy. The only reason I stopped coming was because I found another very good salon within walking distance of my job. I also saw how wonderful of a job you did with a longtime customer and friend who has very very long 3c /4a curls/coils. So when I recommended Sam K try Smith Davis I felt confused about what happened. I also saw the results of her haircut from earlier this week. I know how much work curly hair is and the fact that you didn't supervise this well speaks volumes. I can relate when a stylist tries to push products on you that are too heavy for curly hair and doesn't listen. It's one thing if you're learning about your hair, every customer is different. When an entire salon doesn't listen to your needs, unprofessional is a polite way of putting it. By cutting off her hair like that, you threw away hours of labor, often resulting in back pain, as well as 100s if not 1000s of dollars of products that go into investing into curly hair. She deserves a refund and accountability. I'll make sure I never recommend this place again. I feel heartbroken because I know the story of your inception, about the rift that caused the owners to leave Sine Qua Non and start your own business. That's hard ways I will never fully understand, but your inconsistency is inexcuseable.
