I treated myself to a reflexology appointment with Phiwan. It was easy to book online, and just as easy to reschedule over the phone when I had a conflict with my original appointment time. The salon is very clean and bright. I was greeted right away and only had to sit for a minute before Phiwan came out to grab me. The room was cozy and serene. I felt very comfortable on the table. Phiwan set to work right away and immediately honed in on where my biggest knots and pain were and dug in. It was the perfect amount of pressure and I was able to fully relax. Can someone remind me to book a facial at least once a season??? Margot has given me two facials now and I've loved them both. I left yesterday feeling super hydrated, relaxed, and ready to take on the world with my face. The salon is located in a great part of the city and I haven't had any issues finding parking. The front desk folks are always nice when checking you in. Margot is prompt and the space is clean and has a relaxing vibe. I love the robe (wondering where I can buy it haha) and once you've undressed and put the robe on then Margot does an assessment of your skin. I appreciate that she's not judgmental of bad habits. She lets you know what you should be doing to care for your skin, but she's never said negative things about my preferred products. She says the goal is that I feel good because all skin is different. The products she used all felt great on my face, I love the arm massages, and the price is spot on for the service. I never feel like I have to buy anything, but I have now left with exfoliant and a masque and they weren't too expensive. I also couldn't resist the cherry almond aveda hair products. I went to Salon Echo yesterday for the first time, even though I am aware that it has been there for years! I went to high school with Maria, but I kept going elsewhere to get my hair done because I am a creature of habit. Yesterday I could not drive to the suburbs and I live and work right near Edgewater, so I showed up for my appointment at Salon Echo that I had booked a few days before... My hair turned out so great that I wish it would look like this forever. You know how it is when your hair is done by a professional; it always looks so awesome that you want the stylist to come to your house every few days and do your hair. Pear was my colorist and stylist. Her work is so careful and amazing and on-point. My hair is the most difficult hair to color; it refuses to take the color that is put on it. Pear conquered my issue single-handedly with a little bowl of color and a brush, and her education and research to get the job done. My hair is also not easy to blow dry and style. It is thick and frizzy, and a very time-consuming process that I refuse to do on my own. Pear took her time and stood by me and dried my hair and it looked so amazing that I did not believe it was my hair. Salon Echo has a new regular client now - the salon is large, beautiful, super clean, nice and calm and chill. I was offered hot tea and cold water and my time there was fabulous. [Part 2 of 2] I scheduled a second appointment for the color because maybe I'm overreacting and it's not so bad after all?! People at the salon said nice things about the result, so maybe I just need to get use to this somewhat drastic change. No! I get home and I realize my hair is FOUR different colors. Light brown at the tips, ash in the middle, and there's a weird orange band near the roots. And my sideburns weren't even touched, so the hair there is black. I should've called immediately, but I figured I'd try to get used to the color(s) before calling back. After a few days of living in this/these color(s), I ended up booking an appointment at another salon with another colorist because I just couldn't justify spending more money at this place after my previous visit. When the colorist at the other salon took a look at my hair, she said the cuticle of my hair was extremely damaged, which is wild, because this guy basically had virgin hair to work with at my roots. As a curly girl, I use conditioner like it's my life, and I try to deep condition once a week, so for her to be worried about my hair says something. I think the colorist at this place was overwhelmed by the massive quantity of my hair and panicked since there was another client booked afterwards. Not a good recipe for success. December: Follow-up to a month later, and I realize I have this second color appointment with this place. I call to cancel, and say that I'd like to leave some feedback with the owner. I don't want a refund at this point, but I wanted to inform the owner that I wasn't too thrilled with the service I received. When I tell you this owner had theeee AUDACITY, chiiile! She got super defensive and did not handle my criticism well at all. She told me how I felt about MY hair, and it took everything in me not to throw my phone across the room. Your colorist told ME I would be given a cut AND double process color and did not deliver on that, even after a CONSULTATION--he knew what he was getting into. That is what I am most upset about. I actually TRIED to like my hair, but I was NOT thrilled with the results. Do not promise your clients services and renege them the day of, especially for a color service. The owner also explained to me that they don't always know how long people will take to process. Yeah, I get that, but I had a whole forest of hair--think Diana Ross level of hair--and there's no way in the world you thought I'd be in the chair for 3-4 hours--start to finish--for the two services I booked. The owner also tried to guilt-trip me and told me how much her colorist was looking forward to finishing up the color project. No, ma'am. Y'all will not be touching another strand of my hair ever again. If you can't accept new color clients, just say that. Tons of salons have been putting color service appointments on hold due to surges in demands due to COVID--your clients' hair shouldn't have to suffer due to overbooking. The only reason this place gets a star is because of the location. It's super easy to get to by train because it's right off of the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop. read more

I got the half facial. It wasn't until I got home that I realized my skin didn't look any different. Margot told me my skin would be brightened and moisturized. It was not. Half of the time she was giving me a massage rather than giving me a facial. I wish she would of put that time towards my skin. Also the room was crazy hot in there. When I got home, I saw I had black heads still all over my face. I am getting another facial another tomorrow to fix my face. Three days in a row? Salon Echo is my place to be pampered! Day 1: my 96 year old mom needs a haircut - Maria to the rescue! Everyone one at the salon is so kind to Mom - she dosen't remember coming here on my wedding day, nonetheless she's comfortable in Maria's hands and looks beautiful. Bonus: dyed eyebrows! Sunshine took care of Mom and her brows; soft brown for the faded redhead. It was a great outing for Mom, and she looks gorgeous! Day 2: time for my touch up and haircut. Always perfection! I've been coming here for 4 years, and Maria performs an engineering feat to make my fine hair look fresh and full. And the color? Maria never let's the highlights take over the base color. She is a true artiste! Day 3: we're laughing as I walk into the salon for my appointment with Jessica. My turn for eyebrows and eyelashes, plus a custom facial. I got my hair cut here after a LONG time of going to SuperCuts only. I love it, and will definitely go back. Have been waiting a long time for something like this in the 'hood - a great addition to Edgewater Beach! Riyoko (forgive my spelling) cuts my hair perfectly (straight, fine, limp), this is the first time in around 15 years that I've been loyal to a stylist. She's just great! Last time I went, I got a tour of the back, the spa area - VERY nice, I'll be coming back here for more services - quite posh! UPDATE: 9/2/07, I still go here. Have loved every cut I've gotten - can't stop swinging my hair around when I exit the salon. I never ask for any particular stylist - every one I've gotten (Maria the owner, Jane, and SEXY, sexy Jovan) have all been great!! The M & M combo of Maria and Margot is my choice when I visit Salon Echo! I start out with a brow tint and just recently I follow that with a lash curl. While wearing a mask is now part of my daily routine I really wanted to place more emphasis on my eyes. Who knew that I could have lush, lush eyelashes in one hour. Margot is amazing at her craft, and a lovely person to speak with too. I can't tell you how many times I get complimented on my haircut and color. Maria is a genius in my mind. I have been a patron of Salon Echo for almost two years -- for the most part, I have enjoyed my experience. I used to see Rachel fairly regularly, however she has been out for quite some time. I have had a tough time finding a stylist. Most recently, I went and got an eyebrow wax by Jennifer and a hair cut by Valerie. I would not recommend Jennifer -- she seemed incredibly hostile and it was difficult to relax. While my eyebrows look great, the experience was not so great. On the same visit, I got my hair cut by Valerie. Let me just say, besides being delightful, she is a genius with curly hair!!! Hands-down, best hair cut EVER! I have gotten nothing but compliments and I feel amazing. If you have curly hair, go to Valerie. You will not be sorry. Pear saved my hair! I don't love my hair...I deal with trichotillomania on top of having fine hair to begin with, so I never really look forward to going to the salon. I decided today my hair needed some sprucing up because it had felt pretty dead and sad lately. I found Salon Echo in the neighborhood and decided to call to book a last-minute haircut/color before a trip. They got me in after work with Pear, who was amazing! She was very thoughtful about what color to go with and asked a lot of questions about what exactly I wanted (and didn't want). She was a joy to work with and even gave me a complimentary hair masque because of how sad I had been feeling about my hair, which was so unexpected but such a nice added bonus to the experience! I wanted to love this place..in fact it started out like most relationships. Fun exciting, then it became good, constant...then out of nowhere it got messy really fast and just had to end... I hate to be trite like that, but it's true. I started going to Echo about 2 years ago..I'd go about every six weeks and the first 3 sessions great cuts...,then the 4th happened and it was like she didn't listen to me, the person who cut my hair the other 3 times just did what she wanted. I figured bad day..no biggie, it wasn't hacked so I'd deal with it. Well when I was rung up I was not given my student discount (grad school, POOR people come on!) Well it was summer they then told me the discount was only good during the school year...miffed again, but dealt, paid etc. Then in late fall my mom came into town. She was down and I knew how a day at the salon would help BIG MISTAKE. This was the breaking point. I called ahead explained my mom had a really bad year (my dad died of like 40+ years their marrage etc, heartbroken) this was her first trip since that and I wanted to have some girl time... Well I briefed them on my mom's oddities re: finicky hair ways made sure to bring photos etc. I went to my regular person who recommended the lady for my mom... So my mom came out w/a hair cut that looked horrific...not just saying that to be mean, but they gave a 66 year old woman harsh straight cut bangs and no volume and died her hair basically orange when she asked for auburn and pointed to auburn..I did witness this and I'm an auburn red naturally..so my mom looked like a weird bang-crazed carrot...she was so upset. They offered to fix it for free but WE WOULD HAVE TO WAIT at least 1 day as they were booked...I've never in my life (lived w/stylists, good successful stylists before) known a salon to make a client wait more than 1 day..and they implied it'd be longer..she was here for 2. Needless to say 25 dollars more spent at the hair cuttery (shutters they did a better job) and some L'Oreal dye job I did for her she was her old self.. so 200+ dollars later, what a debacle and that ended the relationship. I do have to say the staff itself very friendly, I think the woman who my mom got was totally thrown off by the thickness of her hair and also my mom is intimidating and I did see other styles she did, she was fine just not my mom's cup of tea. The owner however handled the situation in such an awful way I can't see why anyone would risk it. I mean I was nice about it, my mom was even nice about it, we just wanted to come in that next morning or even stay a bit later that evening..we were already there..anyone could have fixed the dye and the cut..and the owner was adamant about not doing that she dismissed us and let the receptionist basically deal w/it. This is why I do go out of my way to explain to people they're better off going somewhere else. read more

Why do I love this place? Julio, Aveda products, nice ambiance, great customer service. Not cheap, but I generally feel that I get what I'm paying for. Julio has been doing my hair (long with blond highlights) since August 2012. He spends time listening to what I want, makes suggestions, and always remembers what he did on the last visit. He is friendly, fun and has a great rapport with his clients and coworkers. Wonderful scalp massage during shampoos. He is exceptionally talented at blow-outs and styling (he teaches blow dry classes to stylists at another salon), so you should definitely consider booking him for a blow dry and style service if you have a special occasion or just want to feel great for a night out. I've had manicures with Belle, she is very chatty and attentive to detail. She doesn't rush and will treat you to lots of hand, arm, and shoulder massages! The front desk is always friendly and accommodating. You will always be offered tea (the Aveda herbal blend is wonderful!) or other beverages. All of my phone calls to book, reschedule, cancel, etc are always handled efficiently by the reception staff. One day, due to a child care crisis, I had to take both my kids to the salon for the first 20 minutes of my hair cut. Julio and the front desk staff didn't complain- instead they helped me keep the kids occupied! (of course, I never repeated that experience!) Prior to becoming a regular customer in August 2012, I had been to Salon Echo a number of times throughout the years- and I agree with many of the negative reviews for that time period. However, I think that this salon/spa has finally found its groove and is now a truly undiscovered gem. read more

This place just lost my business for the second time because they don't respond to their voice mail. I've gone to Salon Echo a number of times, usually to get my hair cut with Jane, who is great. I've gotten plenty of great cuts with Jane, and it is less expensive than my alternate haircut place (Tigerlilie). I've also gone here for massage with Phi Wan, who did a great job. My beef is with reception. Maybe six months ago I called and left a voice mail trying to get an appointment for a haircut. After two days they hadn't called back. I tried calling again (during business hours, but for some reason still got the voice mail) and still couldn't get through. I gave up and called Angelica at Tigerlilie (see my other review). About a week ago I called Salon Echo again. It was about 10am, so I guess before business hours. I left a voice mail, and no return call once again. I went to Tigerlilie...again... Check your voice mail, Salon Echo! At least one good stylist is losing business because of this oversight! read more

I went here for an eyebrow wax because it is conveniently located around the corner from my house. The price is pretty cheap, $15, but I've seen cheaper. I decided to give it a try since it was so close and it looked like a nice place. Anyway, I first walked in between 4:30 & 5 p.m. & the receptionist said the eyebrow technician had just left for the day, which I thought was weird. Why not stay the extra hour or two until the entire salon closes? Whatever. So I had to make a rather inconvenient appointment for the following day because she was "all booked up." He made my appointment for 3 p.m. and I had to leave to get on the train to go to work by 3:30 p.m. I was okay with this at the time because usually an eyebrow wax takes about, oh, 2 minutes. Wrong. I didn't get out of there until 3:35 p.m. 35 minutes to wax my eyebrows? Yeah, I haven't had them waxed in a couple months, but I kept them up to par. I just needed a shape up. I didn't want to rush her because I didn't want her to mess up my eyebrows. Also, they use hard wax. That crap that you have to let dry, then flake off. I could've just went to Walgreen's and bought a hard wax kit for $5 and did them myself. I don't know if she, (I think her name was Jennifer? Clearly the only eyebrow technician they have.) doesn't know how to shape eyebrows correctly or what. I told her what I wanted, I get my eyebrows waxed for a reason, to get them shaped. She basically just went straight across and kept them thick. They did not look good at all, and grew back in within a few days. I'm giving it 2 stars only because she WAS nice and talked to me the whole time so I wasn't bored. I won't go back there again, not for eyebrows at least. read more

I was in need of a brow wax and didn't feel like traveling far. Luckily Salon Echo is easily accessible via CTA bus or the Red Line. I had an eyebrow wax with Quinn. She was very nice and did a great job. She was even playing some great music in her anesthetic room. The salon is a bit of an oasis despite the fact it's right by the Red Line and in a somewhat busy area of Bryn Mawr. I will be sure to come back to Quinn. You can't beat a $15 brow wax. I'd highly recommend a 15-20% tip as well. read more

It's one of the few day spas with a salon attached which still maintains a sense of tranquility after you leave the spa. Its a spa, so if you want cheap go to one of those $10 hair cut places. Maria is THE BEST with color and there is no better at waxing in the city than Jen (I have been everywhere). I stopped in to pick up a gift certificate in the evening. The front desk was very friendly and helped me figure out what I needed. They even complimented me on my use of gmail ;). It looks like they offer everything you would need in a salon spa. Considering other places I haven stopped in, not to mention actually had my haircut at, the prices did not seem out of line. I appreciate a cool salon opening on such a stretch of Bryn Mawr, with its weird general stores and dollar-o-rama outlets. The interior could use a little work from what I could tell from the front. I had high hopes for this salon as its concept and aesthetic qualities lend a desirable appeal to the developing Edgewater community. My first experience was with Kathy, the nail technician, who fortunately no longer works for Salon Echo. Not only was she late for my scheduled appointment, but she smelled so strongly of smoke it was though she had recently fled a burning building. Between my base coat, nail color, and top coat, she applied her own make-up, using the salon's Aveda samples which made me vow to never try an un-opened sample again. Despite this, my manicure was competitively priced and lasted a reasonable length of time. My next experience with with Mina who gave me the most expensive haircut/color of my life. My shock was when I received the balance for my service (cut, highlights, and a suspicious finish) that totaled nearly $300 with tip. Ahhhh! Believe me, I am not one to skimp on pricing for beauty services, but I was shocked. Shame on me for not researching the pricing structure more thoroughly. My husband asked later if I had a "spa day," at Salon Echo and I sheepishly told him no, the only service was my new 'do! I spoke to some nice members of the Cheetah gym where I work out who were outraged and told me never to return. I have since found another, more affordable stylist, and am relieved I don't have to drive out-of-state for an affordable hairstyle. read more

Perhaps I'm not being fair because I only tried one stylist. Or maybe I'm just difficult to please. Regardless, I probably won't go back to Salon Echo for one important reason: I hate my hair. I got my hair cut there for the first time back at the end of 2006. The first cut I got was fabulous, and I was SO pleased. It progressively went downhill from there. By March, when I decided to let my hair grow out and get some highlights, I was sorely disappointed. You could hardly even tell I had highlights, and I paid about $100 for them. The haircut was awful, which I paid about $50 for. For $150, I had better be pleased or I'm not coming back. The result: I haven't been back. To be fair, I'm not going to mention the stylist's name since he/she might be fine for someone else. Now that my hair has grown out quite a bit, I've been getting compliments. Too bad I didn't get any when I paid a fortune for it to look a certain way. I'm giving Salon Echo three stars because it's the nicest place to go in Edgewater. They may actually have some fabulous stylists, but I only tried out one. You really feel like you're in a professional spa when you walk in, which is the idea. A little piece of advice before you go: the last time I was there, their Reiki massage therapist was offering free 30 minute sessions to build up clientle. I did it, and unless you're into the New Age methods of relaxation, it's probably not worth your time. I really didn't get anything out of it. read more

I have only been to this salon once but will definitely be back. I had been fairly happy with the Aveda salon I was going to in Bucktown- always had good cuts and color jobs. However, each time I called to make an appointment, the people who I had seen the last time were no longer there. This is very frustrating- especially when you are happy with the work they did. So each time I would have to keep my fingers crossed that I would like my hair when they were finished. A friend mentioned Salon Echo- didnt just mention it, she raved about it. I was happy that it was an Aveda salon as I really like the products. She suggested I see Jovan for a haircut and, after I complimented her on her shapely brows, she said to ask for Jen for an eyebrow wax. I was not disappointed. Jovan was all he was supposed to be! Very sweet, very sexy. It was easy to get caught up in him- I had been warned- and he was seriously having an Edward Scissorhands affect on me!!! All kidding aside (not really), what was most impressive was the amount of time he took. He did my cut and color, which is something that I hadnt experienced for a while. I think I was with him for over 2 hours. He was so nice. I need to go back and will definitely make my appointment with Jovan- I am sure he will be there for a while. It seems he has a loyal fan base! Jen was wonderful- I was very happy with my brows and will see her for a facial soon. The place is very soothing like most Aveda spas. I used to live in Rogers Park and now closer to Logan Square- wish it was a little bit closer. Made an appointment last minute, on a whim, because I will be going on vacation in the Dominican Republic in a week. They were thankfully able to squeeze me in for a bikini, underarm, and brow wax appointment same-day! The salon is not huge, but it is definitely clean and the receptionists are sweet, friendly people. I received a cold glass of water and only had to wait a few minutes for my appointment. Quinn did my waxing, and she was great. Not only is she a very sweet person, she actually cares about the job she does on you and wants you to be happy. No pushy, in a rush, rude aestheticians here! She made me feel comfortable during an otherwise seemingly awkward service. So far I am very happy with my results and would definitely consider other services here (especially since it is only a couple of blocks from my apartment!) The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because my brow waxing wasn't exactly the best I've had, and the price I paid for my services was a bit higher than I normally pay elsewhere.
