I'm in love (platonically) with my NEW hair stylist Ken Maddex at T. Salon in Chicago (Ravenswood). He deserves more than 5 stars!
Here's my history: In my younger years, I was not afraid to try crazy colors or cuts. Since reaching adult-hood (30's) I've been a little more 'particular' with what I want. One trip to Mario Tricocci left my long hair breaking off as short as 2" in length. A stylist named Shannon (another salon) did her best to mask the damage and work with what was left. She was an angel.
Fast-forward 7 years: Shannon has been the "one and only" to touch my hair (color/cut) until yesterday. My hair was quite grown out and I needed to get it highlighted. With my work schedule, living in Chicago and Shannon being in Palatine, it just wasn't possible to go see her. I went on Yelp and started looking for a salon in my neighborhood (Ravenswood) and came across several positive reviews on T. Salon. VERY reluctantly, I called to make an appointment, scared to death and already picturing a disaster/hating myself for letting someone else touch my hair.
I called and spoke to the receptionist who was patient listening to the rambling of what has become a paranoid woman when it comes to getting hair highlighted. I must have sounded like a nut-job. She said "Ken has an opening this evening, can you come tonight?" I agreed, but felt like I needed to throw up and assumed I would be calling back because I chickened out.
After work, I walked down to T. Salon wondering if I made a fatal error. I walked in, was greeting with smiles, and was introduced to Ken Maddex. He shook my hand, sat me in his chair and proceeded to let me ramble about my fears, past experiences and what I did and did not want. I showed him a picture I clipped out of a magazine years ago of Cameron Diaz and said "This is the shade of blonde, the sort of 'depth' and type of highlights I want". Mind you, NO ONE, not even my dear Shannon ever has gotten it "just right".
For the next 30-40 minutes Ken and I chatted while he strategically put the foils in my hair. Let me add, he's a great conversationalist! We talked Chicago, teenage years, music, my boyfriend, cats, concerts, salons, etc., etc.
After a while, it was time to wash my hair. I started to feel that "panic" setting in. After he washed my hair, he sat me back in the chair and took the towel off. I can honestly say, if my hair was the color it was when it was wet, I would have been happy! That NEVER happens.
Ken dried my hair and I kept my eyes closed or looked around because I was still afraid. When he was done, I looked in the mirror......OH MY GOD!!!! I got the EXACT COLOR and the EXACT STYLE OF HIGHLIGHTS that were in the photo. I kid you not! No one, not one single person has ever done that for me!! I have NEVER gotten EXACTLY what I have asked for!!!! For the first time in years, I wanted to go out immediately and show off my hair (normally I don't like the blow-out or how someone decides to part my hair).
I woke up this morning and 'touched up' my hair from sleeping on it. I looked in the mirror in natural light and it looks better today than last night (apartment lighting). I have received several compliments from co-workers and I feel like I'm on top of the world.
I can not begin to say enough about Ken Maddex at T. Salon (773/728-2470)!!! I have never been so happy, felt so relieved and been so excited to know I was wrong about what I thought was going to happen. Ken is officially the ONLY person who is going to touch my hair!!! I have found "hair stylist perfection" in Ken Maddex! Go to T. Salon and make an appointment with him, you will NOT be sorry! read more
