Akiko's Abhyanga (Ayurvedic body massage) + Marma Face Massage was one of the most relaxing massages I've ever had. She integrates her skill in different tools and techniques into a soothing relaxing experience. The warm oil brought me immediately into a deep calm. It really warmed up my cold body and by the end of the session, I felt very energetic and alert. Going into the Marma Face massage part of my session, my eyes were puffy and this detoxing session relieved it a lot. I could feel my eyes "perk" up after the massage and my mind became clearer. After leaving the salon, I could still fall into deep relaxation just by closing my eyes. I've been coming here for over a year now and love how Miwako cuts my hair. She also has wavy thick japanese hair so knows how to manage cutting my hair without making it frizz up :) I've been weary about getting my hair cut during this pandemic but when I visited their salon, they conduct temperature checks before you can enter, have multiple air filters running, seem to only allow ~50% occupancy for appointments and also have lots of hand sanitizer available. Update: the receptionist got in touch with me and was very apologetic and accommodating of my schedule, and squeezed me in the same day with Mari, the owner. Mari spent almost 4 hours fixing my hair! She was so kind and made sure she heard my concerns and walked through what she'd do to fix it. Her attention to detail was impeccable and I would definitely trust her with my hair - no matter how bad it was! You can really tell she cafes about her clients and the standards of her salon. Huge thank you for staying late and fixing my hair! I've been coming here for the past 3 years for cuts and balayage, so I completely trusted all of the stylists and colorists here. My last visit was so disappointing though, and even more so after I reached out on their website to try and remedy the situation by asking for it to be fixed without getting a response. I saw the only appointment for a full balayage was for a junior colorist and the results were streaky, wasn't blended, came out orange, and has random large chunks instead of adding dimension. I told the colorist as soon as my hair was washed and blown out, and they tried to fix it but it didn't really do anything and I could tell it was the extent of their abilities so I just left, since I had been there for almost 4.5 hours at that point. I'm sad about my hair, since I need to get it fixed somewhere else and I never got a response back from Salon87 :( read more

What I think I like most about this place is the meticulous attention to detail I was able to get from Yu. She provided me with I think the most relaxing and attentive experience I have ever had while getting my hair cut and I know for sure that I will be coming back! What a cute salon with an incredibly kind staff. It's actually right around the corner from my apartment, but tiny so it's hard to catch. The inside is beautiful; a whole wall is covered in dried flowers and the overall feel of the place is very Japanese. The stylists are all very chic and I could see that they were incredibly fluent in their craft. The Salon87 website is really intuitive, it actually offers you the stylist's career history when you book an appointment, so what attracted me to Yu was that she actually worked for Paris Fashion Week! She and I chatted about her recent move to Brooklyn and her past, which was actually very interesting. Yu massaged my scalp for 10 minutes when I was getting my hair washed, which is the longest anyone has ever done for free. I also loved how after my shampoo, I was offered a menu of refreshments! I chose the jasmine green tea and it was brought over on a little tray. Yu then spent a very long time gauging how I'd like to cut my hair, the length, and the style I would like. She used techniques to help accentuate my texture and styled it very nicely. The price point is also very good for the city. My haircut was $73 with tax and no tip included in that price. She listened to my idea and began pinning my hair so I could see what it would end up looking like. I was there for little over an hour and walked out looking completely different. I had the pleasure of having my haircut by Tsuyoshi this week. It was my very first time visiting Salon87 and i took the first available appointment with the first available stylist. Based on recent reviews I wasn't too nervous, but hoped my stylist would give me the time and attention needed to achieve the cut I wanted. I have very thick, straight hair which requires specific cutting techniques. Tsuyoshi immediately understood my concerns and gave me a full hour of his time. I arrived with a boring, one length lob and left with a nicely textured and layered Bob that has movement and air dries into a natural soft wave. It is important to note Salon87 grants appointments online through FourSquare which made it very easy to book time. They also granted the same price quoted on their website. That was especially surprising (in a good way) because many salons add to the quoted price without clear explanation. I am an extremely picky person when it comes to a hairstylist, but I am happy to keep Tsuyoshi as my go to for all future haircuts. I will wrap up with a note on the cleanliness and Covid restrictions followed. They follow all precautions and ensure everyone is wearing a mask inside. I have been coming to the salon for couple years now and have never been even slightly disappointed. Two of my friends and my boyfriend started coming here after my recommendation and all are now happy, regular customers! I keep getting asked on the streets who my hair stylist is and I always promote salon 87! Right now, during the pandemic they're taking extreme measures to ensure safety of their clients and employees. You get your temperature checked, there's hand sanitizer, you get a face mask if your hair is getting colored to not destroy your own one, there's air purifiers at every station, there's lots of space and space dividers.I felt very safe getting my very needed hair maintenance at the beginning of July when they reopened. If I could leave a negative star rating I would. I was recommended to come here by a friend as I moved back to NYC a few months ago and need a trim. Yes- I read their cancellation policy when booking, yes- that neighborhood is notoriously horrendous for parking (used to live there!), yes- I understand why showing up late to a beauty treatment is problematic for the booked service... but I was literally on the phone with their front desk, practically in tears mind you, hunting down parking after a Murphy's Law drive from Queens to Brooklyn when I reached the 15 minute past the hour mark. I literally found a spot at 12:16pm, on their block, for my 12p appointment. The staff person on the line had said they'd run it past the stylist if they would still cut my hair without a wash (I even added that I don't need a blow out, just a cut as I'm in a friend's wedding in two weeks) but as soon as the 12:15 turned to 12:16 I was informed the appointment is now cancelled. This stylist knew I was on their block and I had being super apologetic of running late (which was beyond my control mind you, I left myself plenty of travel time per the Waze app), and even as a new client they would not budge. Even Arrojo salon will let you redeem your missed appointment within two weeks. Not this place, they charged me the full service despite my being on the phone frantically trying to keep my appointment. Needless to say I told the friend who referred me, and for the one minute past their policy cut-off parking spot I had found, this salon has lost two clients. read more

I was looking up salons in this neighbourhood to get my bangs trimmed. This salon has all five star reviews on Google so I called this salon since it is appointment only. The lady who answered the phone could not understand English so I just walked to the salon and saw that the bangs trim was for $20. It seemed slightly pricey given the neighbourhood, but I was willing to give it a try. The lady who was assigned to trim my bangs informed me that the price had increased to $30, but they had forgotten to update it. It seemed odd to me that they had forgotten to update the price list at the salon itself! I was a little uncomfortable, so I went to another salon in the neighbourhood. I do not think it is ethical to advertise a certain price and then inform the patron right before the service begins that the price has gone up by 33%. read more

I've received many body treatments in my life because I was a dancer and her technique has a beautiful balance of flow (which helps my circulation using warm oil) and pressure points. Izumi washed my hair and gave me the best scalp massage ever! So relaxing. Very different from other quick washes and rushing me to the chair like other places I've been to. Izumi really wanted to make sure I was relaxed and comfortable and even brought out a tea menu. Hiro was a master. He was so sweet and friendly, but also caring and very attentive with my hair.
