Gem House is a true gem and I was so happy to see a new salon open in Greenpoint. I've gotten a few blowouts now and they're always perfect, exactly what I asked for and they last several days. The couple that own the salon are extremely kind and welcoming as well is their staff. I recently had an appointment, however my dog passed away unexpectedly - when I emailed to cancel the appointment they asked me what animal charity I support and they donated to French Bulldog Rescue Network. Like, who does that? It was honestly a beautiful reminder that there are still good people in the world. I also notice their commitment to supporting neighborhood shops and businesses, they speak often about local business and do collabs with some as well. This place isn't just a salon they have a hidden barber all the way in the front his name is Mike ... I've been going to this guy for more then 12 years.. he is a savant in men's hairs.. when I moved far from him I tried a bunch of places and nobody's comes close to his detail and service... a true professional and product specialist I promise you he is the best in that Greenpoint Williamsburg area nobody even comes close in nyc let alone in that area... Little bout the shop it's really gorgeous.. lots of plants and super tall ceilings.. 3 floors super clean bathrooms and every direction he moved the chair there was beautiful scenery all in all love the place as well do your selves a favor if you're a guy in the area stop by and get a haircut and beard trim.. trust me you'll travel for this guy! read more

Well... My hair was over texturized and my natural texture is ruined for the time being. I received my cut almost a month ago and it had never sat correctly. Now I can see the lines of texture in my hair- like shelves. As a stylist, this sucks to leave a yelp review but I feel it necessary. I think the most disappointing thing- is that I gave her exact instructions based on my hair type and she didn't listen. She turned me away from the mirror (red flag) and when I saw my hair reveal I had to tell her to stop cutting my hair. I was slightly convinced everything would sit correctly after a couple weeks- but this is simply the worst cut I've ever received. After spending 300 on products that were also completely incorrectly picked out for my natural texture, I feel like I had to leave a review to forewarn anyone with ethnic hair texture to avoid this salon. read more

I had a disappointing experience today trying to book an appointment at Gem salon. I've been putting off getting my roots fixed to save money, and this week I decided to do it. I work and have an infant, so the time that works best is the last appointment, when my partner can take over. I booked an appointment for $145 at 6:15. Today I was messaged saying that I can't have my roots fixed for $145 without adding on $50 for a blow dry (listed as a separate service on the menu), and that the only way that it could be done is if I were to come in earlier. At the other salon, the hairstylist always dries a portion of my hair to check the color at the end, and she has never charged me for it. I was very excited to like this place because it is close to my apartment, but everything about this rubbed me the wrong way. I hope other people get treated better in the future. read more

This salon is a true neighborhood "gem" and I can't rave enough about how amazing Elle is! She perfected my brunette balayage and I've gotten the best haircuts with her too - adding layers that have given me so much volume and bounce. I've been getting my haircut by Amanda for 3 years! Every time I go in she gives me the perfect cut. I recently went in and she made me a golden brunette color and gave the best hair cut of my life! I highly recommend if you like your hair to lay perfect rain or shine. It will also surprise you how well her cuts grow out. I have been to Gem House twice now for hair services and had great results both times! The first service was a cut and face-framing highlights, and the second was a gloss update. Both times I really enjoyed the experience and loved the color and cut I ended up with (curtain bangs and chocolate brown highlights). The salon is on a great block on Greenpoint & West, is a super accessible and cozy space, and has the best hairstylists and assistants. I cannot say enough good things about Gem House!! It was the best word-of-mouth recommendation I've ever gotten. After making the mistake of coloring my own hair during quarantine, it seemed like it was ruined. I went to multiple different professionals to fix my mistake. Jay was my savior though! She took the time to consult with me and really understand what I had done to it so she could correct it for me. Additionally, she helped me establish a plan for color treatments moving forward. I was so hesitant about having my hair cut since I've been trying to grow it out for a couple of years, but she gave me a great new style with only needing to take half an inch off. I've been seeing Elle for my highlights since she worked at a salon in Chelsea almost 8 years ago. I've basically followed her from salon to salon (and now to her very own beautiful salon!) ever since. She is a master of blonde and seems to know the perfect mixture of highlights, lowlights and toners to get to the exact look I want. She listens to questions and wants to hear exactly what you think so she can do the best job possible.
