I got a cut and color today from Torrie and couldn't be happier! The whole goal was to achieve a natural radiance - basically I wanted to look like myself but just elevated, something that could pass for 'my hair just naturally looks this good'. And boy did Torrie deliver! The cut and color amplified my hairs natural movement and brought out so much dimension and texture. Torrie used minimal styling products and this photo was taken about 7 hours later, so I know this is going to last a long time and will be beyond easy for me to replicate at home on a daily basis. I got my hair cut and colored (balayage) by Eric for years when I lived in Brooklyn. He just nails the "effortless, is-it-natural?!" beachy look. A lot of people never realized that my hair was colored. My girlfriends who were in the know would always comment on how great my color was. It was exactly what I was going for: low-maintenance, but polished and flattering. Eric consistently did such a great job that I asked if he would style my hair for my elopement a couple of years ago. He kindly agreed to do my hair AND makeup. When I come to the Karcher, I feel like I've come home. It's a relaxing , soft, unpretentious atmosphere. You can look around and see the skill and the good taste of the stylists, everyone looks happy and comfortable. ...BUT I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT ALEX. I've never had a more interactive and pleasant relationship with my stylist. Not only does she listen and pay attention, but her skill, experience and professionalism always puts me at ease. I've always felt like I had to 'watch' closely when anyone was cutting or coloring my hair; so worried that it would end up going in the WAY wrong direction. This is not so with Alex... I can sit back and chat with her and trust what she is doing. I never write reviews, but my experience at Karcher was unprofessional and poor. Stephanie was my hairdresser and she was cold right off the bat. I was 4 minutes late. Maybe that irritated her?? In any case, I've had bad experiences elsewhere, so I'm very careful when allowing new people to take control. I explained that I'm growing my hair out and that I wanted a clean up and a fresh frame around my face. She offered to remove some weight and when I asked her what that meant, her response was totally off putting. She didn't remove weight, but she cut off a lot of length and it looks like a freaking box cut all the way around. No framing around my face like I asked for. And the only reason we shared decent conversation was because I tried to engage with her. Really tried to make this a good experience for myself. disappointing. read more

Just got my hair colored by Cynthia @The Parlour who was as talented as she is funny-- I have really curly hair so it hasn't been the easiest experience getting it done right (insert raise the roof emoji for today) I was so happy I was almost sad to leave. The prices are NY-reasonable especially considering the amount of time she spent consulting pre color.... I was also gaga for the shampooing ... Mmmmmmm, smelled so nice. My only complaint is minor, there's some taxidermy on the wall and I Am a vegetarian diva who prefers to see animals in the wild, but that's just annoying in general and I can't believe I said that out loud -- the bathroom art was cool enough to offset my neurosis. Anyway, two thumbs up for The Parlour and if you pretend I had six fingers see them doing jazzy things for Cynthia -- she's the bomb. Had my hair cut and ombré'd by Allie...wound up ok but not really what I wanted. My ombré is not as graduated as it should be, maybe it's due to the use of foils on the upper layers and some sort of plastic on the layers underneath? So, I was left with some REALLY light pieces midway on my head instead of towards the bottom... Also, there is a chunk in the front that is untouched, so it looks misplaced and much darker than the rest. The haircut was ok. I really was hoping for some more creativity... Had much better elsewhere. Also my side bangs feel like they are slightly uneven and not blended as well. And a side note-when I was done and went to change, I was starting to feel like I wanted more of a bang, so I went out and explained this, and she made it very obvious that she was really annoyed. So, I just settled on making them slightly shorter because they were really in my eyes and she was really making a case out of not doing it and that it would be a whole other haircut (although I did mention at the beginning that I parted my hair to the side AND the middle)- so, after that I felt REALLY uncomfortable. I'm thinking she was in a rush and wanted to get out of there. Normally, I would have called after the fact to address my concerns, but I felt so uncomfortable that I didn't even bother. So, overall it was not horrible, but I'm far from impressed or happy. I won't be recommending or returning. ****upon further inspection, my hair was not done well by ANY means. I posted some pics of what I noticed today. I'm pretty upset about the back mostly! I am definitely calling to see if someone else could fix this! I hope The Parlour can redeem itself!!!**** ****UPDATE-I was contacted by the manager after I called and left a message on the salon voicemail. She said that basically I would have to have Allie redo my hair or else she would have to have me be charged for seeing someone else. I'm embarrassed at how late this review is because I had the BEST haircut and color experience of my life with Alex just before the holidays! I've lived in NYC almost two years and had nothing but nightmare experiences until Alex! I came to her wanting a huge change - chopping off roughly 8-10 inches! She was wonderful about consulting what short style would work best to frame my face shape (a little soft/round) and she nailed it! I've never chopped my hair off and felt 100% confident with absolutely no regret before - and I walked home BEAMING at how light and flattering my cut felt/looked. She was also amazing about showing me how to style it up and how to do it loose/texturized for everyday. I also LOVE the balayage she did - it's subtle yet brought a new brightness to my face which I really needed! I get random greys and whites so I'm forced to dye my roots and most stylists have dyed it WAY too dark and Alex really did an amazing job of getting close to my natural dark color without making me look like I'd dipped my hair in black tar (seriously - I've had HORRIBLE dye jobs in NYC) and blended it beautifully with the balayage. Alex is also a wonderful conversationalist which is important to me. Especially when I'm spending hours in a chair, it's really nice to have a stylist who is kind, will chat but doesn't make forced conversation. I feel like she reads people well - I saw her on two visits (cut then color) a week apart and the first time I wouldn't shut up (largely cause I was nervous... I was chopping my hair for the first time in 8 years!) and the second time I was pretty exhausted/getting over being sick so she was sweet to grab me tea and check on me but also let me zone out into my cold med daydreams ha! I also should mention that The Karcher has THE BEST tea on tap that I've ever had and the atmosphere is super relaxing, and cozy! read more

I have two complaints about Karcher. The first issue: I went in for a haircut with asymmetrical hair- the longest part grazed my collarbone while the back reached the base of my neck. I brought in a picture of the style I wanted and discussed with my stylist if it was possible given the texture of my hair and she said it would work. However, instead of the swingy, tousle-y style I wanted, I got a cut that looks like the hairstyle lovechild of Javier Bardem's character from No Country For Old Men and Arya Stark. It looks like one side of my head got caught in a high-powered fan. It's the kind of cut that prompts everyone I see now to say, "oh, you got your hair cut", blink, and then change the subject. It's not good. The second issue: they deemed my decidedly medium-length hair long so I paid the highest fee for a subpar haircut. I emailed the manager and she asserted that the stylist determines the price given the length and thickness of the hair. I guess the upshot is that if you hate the dreaded in-between, shoulder-length phase of growing your hair out, the folks at Karcher will consider you to be a veritable Rapunzel (the downside: they'll charge you accordingly). Not so much a complaint but something that grossed me out- they keep the robes and customers' jackets in the bathroom where they get sprayed with piss water every time someone uses the toilet. My stylist was nice but lacked an artful hand. I have a haircut that I don't want them to "fix" given that would require losing more length and I don't trust in their ability to do any better. I hope that this review is enough to give people second thoughts about going to Karcher. Telling people where I got my hair cut certainly helps. I really wanted to patronize a local business, particularly one owned by a woman, but neither of those factors is enough to overcome their bad technique and questionable pricing policy. read more

I have been going to the Karcher for about 5 years (I started when it was The Parlor) but I go so infrequently due to the fact that i never do anything to my hair. I have always received great cuts and NEVER had a complaint. This place is so great and everyone is so nice. On March 17th, yesterday I went in with every intention of dying my hair. I really didn't want to but I am going grey and it was starting to bother me and I was just so bored with my hair I needed a change. I had made an appointment with Avi I had never had him before, turns out it was hist first day. He was the kindest and most gentle soul I had ever met. He looked at my hair and I have dyed it only once or twice almost 4 years ago. I was going to go bronde or do an ombré. I think he could tell how apprehensive I was and we sat and talked about what I wanted. He asked some questions and he suggested maybe a cut if I wasn't so sure. He was so nice and calming I told him to do whatever he wanted I just couldn't end up with a pixie cut. I wasn't ready for that. I watched him of the next 40 minutes cut large amounts of my hair off, I was mesmerized. He is an artist and my hair looks amazing. I know I am just going to make it harder for myself to get an appointment with him but I want everyone to know how incredible he is. I went in there not really knowing what I wanted or what to do with my hair so I almost chose a drastic dye job. His experience knew what I needed and he led me there. From here on I will only book my appointments with him. My haircut looks so great I can't even see the grey hair anymore. read more

Last week I saw a girl with a phenomenal haircut in the Anthropologie on fifth Av. So, as I am never happy with my haircuts, I make a habit of stopping strange woman with stunning haircuts to find out who is responsible. She said Meg from the Parlour in Greenpoint. I live in Greenpoint, so obviously this was meant to be. I made an appointment with Meg. This is the place to explain, the Anthropologie girl's hair was thick and wavy, where as mine is neither, so Meg had her work cut out for her (pacham chum.) Ok, long story short, I am now sporting the best haircut I've ever had. And that's not all. Normally, I am especially unhappy with what my bangs are up to, so I tend to cut them in my own spacial way, all alone. However, Meg insisted on figuring out exactly what my bangs thoughts and habits are and cut them perfectly. And despite what someone here complained about, the price was not high. When I went in for my appointment, my hair was long, lazy, frizzy at the ends and wouldn't really do much but lay there. Kristin basically told my hair (nicely) that it was being a total slacker, and that she knew it could do better. She did a fantastic job and understood what I wanted, even though I wasn't great at communicating it = "I like it long, but I'm bored with this." When I left, my hair was still long, but it was shaped so it was happy and looking healthy. She also gave me great bangs, which is quite a feat in my experience. The salon, itself, has a nice dark wood/rustic-y/antiquey feeling. Next time I go back I hope to at least have a 10 to 15 minute wait so I can flip through some of the magazines because it looked like they had some good ones (Lula!). I very much appreciated how she sat down with me and my hair to discuss it's bright future. I used a Groupon and was rewarded with a future discount as long as I booked right then. Done. Here's the thing: I am a 34 year old woman, have never had a regular stylist, usually go to free schools to get my haircuts, and I had absolutely no hesitation about booking my next haircut with Jill. I swear is the worst I had in the past five years. the moment I walked out it was ok but after the first wash it become a disaster. It was puffy and fuzzy. My hair in all different lengths and layers in the wrong place. looks like a big mistake. Which is exactly what I asked to avoid. I have bad hair day ever since. it's a total nightmare. I don't do anything crazy to my hair, but Stephanie added new dimension and layers to my hair that other stylists have simply ignored in years past. First time I've left with a good feeling after trying out 3-4 other salons in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area. Both of my roommates were already going to the Parlour but I was the lone holdout (because of the price). That is until I got a horrific haircut last April. Think Jennifer Aniston circa 1996 with bad swoop bangs. I called the Parlour explained what happened and made an appointment for the next day with Kristin. When I walked in, they remembered everything I had said on the phone, they knew exactly what I was looking for and what went wrong. Kristin not only knows how to cut weird wavy thin ringlety hair like mine, but she made it into something that doens't look stupid. "Sass-pants" I think was the word I used to describe it. So now, I don't care about the price. Your hair makes up a huge part of your identity, and it's totally worth it. PS. They take cards, but tips in cash only. PPS. A girl I work with recommended The Parlour Brooklyn. After throughly scoping out the reviews and its website, I finally felt comfortable enough to make an appointment. I've been going to the same guy at my favorite PA salon for about five years now. I always schedule appointments with him when I know I'm traveling home. As one can imagine, this isn't exactly convenient. I needed to find a stylist in NYC, preferably in Brooklyn, and even better if s/he was located in Greenpoint. I'd been searching for about a year and a half. But I finally found her! Enter Allie. She listened to my needs and worked her scissors magic on my naturally wavy tresses that were seemingly dried and fried. The results: an awesome, weightless, easy-to-style cut that I love. Cozy, comfortable neighborhood salon without being pretentious. Wallet-friendly prices. The ladies are super stylish with great hair (always a positive sign!). They use Davines products, which smell heavenly. Special touch: beautiful patterned Mara Hoffman robes. I was offered something to drink when I checked in. Cash tips only, people. I'm giving four stars simply because I felt rushed out the door; Allie's next client arrived as we were finishing up. I had asked her to give me some tips for blowdrying my bangs, which have this weird wave in them now, but she either forgot or didn't have a chance. Despite this, I will definitely return! Heather gave me the best haircut of my life! I have been toying with the idea for short hair for a few years now and yesterday I took the plunge. I did this all at the last minute...stopped in to see if there were cancellations, voila, there was one in the afternoon (thank you man/woman who did not get highlights that day). Awesome Experience! In order to get a great haircut, I've been seeing the same stylist in an E. Village salon that I loved but took me more than an 1 1-1/2 hours to get to with three trains and a 15 min. walk. And then she left, so what was I to do with my mop? I went to my mother's stylist who butchered my hair, and it was so short, there was no way to fix it. So for six months I hid inside and waited with the thought of sitting down in another stylist's chair literally making my hair curl! But finally I was going on a job interview and had to call on faith and hope and then bite the bullet. (If you were wondering when I was going to get to talking about The Parlour...) THE REVIEW STARTS HERE: Making an appointment could not have been easier. I went on-line, chose the day I wanted (you can also choose by stylist) and it showed me all the open appointments - you can scroll over the open appointments to see how much the charge would be for each. I was able to get a convenient appointment for the next day. I went in, had a great consultation about what I wanted to do with my hair now and long term, how I usually style it and how much time I was willing to put into hair maintenance. Then it was off to a shampoo. THANK YOU, LOGAN! I had a fabulous shampoo and scalp massage, unfortunately, I forgot to say thank you as I was so distracted by my impending date with the scissors. I needn't have worried. Since I usually wear my hair straight, my stylist blew my hair out and then did the cut. She beautifully fixed all of the problems that were fixable, blended the other areas so the others weren't noticeable, and gave me a plan for how we can fix my hair over time and get it to where I want it. I hesitate to share my stylists name with you as I 1) don't want her to get so busy that I can't book an appointment with her and 2) don't want her very reasonable fees to skyrocket. However, I'll do the selfless thing and share: THANK YOU, HEATHER! It is an amazing cut, and I received so many compliments on my hair since seeing you! So summary: I got a fantastic style in a beautiful setting. Everyone at the salon was warm and welcoming, prices are reasonable and I now only have a 10 min. walk to the salon. Though I'd happily travel 1 1/2 hours if The Parlour were elsewhere. Only downside - the website lists a matrix of prices based on hair length and stylist's experience. In making the reservation, I did not have to put in my length and they charged me the quoted price. Again, I thought it was a very reasonable price, but if you are very price conscious, maybe call to get the more exact pricing rather than booking on-line. read more

After years of switching from stylist to stylist, I've finally found Nackie! I get my hair cut + color done here. I love that every time I leave the Parlour, I whisper the words "best hair ever" under my breath. I've been coming here for at least 6 months now, and I've never had the exact same cut twice... Nackie and I both like to keep it "fresh", and I've never felt more safe about experimenting with my look. It's a no f&*#-ing brainer. I know that whatever "we" ( Nackie's idea, me nodding head in agreement) come up with, is going to make me look like a rock star. And the color, oh the color.... I have a bright red on top, fading to a dark brown in the back. Ok, I can't explain it. Just look at my photos -- they speak louder than words. I've never seen my cut or color on anyone else, and I literally get compliments on a daily basis. * If you want a good head of hair, and like to know you can TRUST your stylist, instead of having to babysit their every move, you won't find better than Nackie at the Parlour. The Parlour is pretty great. I had my first trip there today for a haircut via Groupon and I was not disappointed. I got there on time and Kristen took me right away. She sat down, looked at the picture I brought in and talked to me for a good 5 minutes about how my hair behaves and what I want it to do. She understood why it can be frustrating (my hair is incredibly thick and incredibly wavy, but not GOOD wavy: no-pattern-unpredictable-does-whatever-the-hell-it-wants wavy.) She educated me on what I needed to do to get the effect that I wanted and she was right. She was able to texturize my hair so that my bangs sweep at a short length (I've never been able to accomplish this!) and used my waves to my advantage. Not gonna lie - I wondered if, because I got the deal on Groupon, I might not be treated exactly the same as other guests, but I felt totally welcome. She definitely took her time with me. As a student, I'll probably need to save up a bit of $ before returning, but I would recommend her without any hesitation. read more

Ive been getting highlights for the last 10 years, but last time i decided to switch it up and get an ombre style, which consisted of a darker all over color keeping my blond in the ends. i liked it but was over it and wanted my old style back. It was a difficult task seeing as i had light roots a dark middle and really bright ends. Heather really did an awesome job. The color is fantastic, so much better than my original style. MEG MEG MEG!!!! wow! i called for a last minute appointment on the hopes that I could basically walk in. At first, there weren't any senior stylist available. But the receptionist called right back and booked me with Meg. To be honest, I was horrified to even come in and taking my hat off. My hair was basically ruined. I am a dark brunette and had went platinum. I tried extensions and OVER treated my hair with glosses and keratins. My hair was in bad shape. Totally breaking off at the ends. I had a pretty gnarly mullet situation. But, I've been trying to grow my hair out for so long and really was upset to let the 2 inches of cotton candy fairy dust length go. But, I knew it was time. Meg did a consult with me and really took her time to look at my hair and talk about a plan. I felt so relived. She actually listened. Even when I told her I couldn't bare to go any shorter than my longest broken piece, she totally respected that. Right as she started cutting, I realized I should probably have some color done. I mentioned it to her and she went above and beyond to move some things around, enroll the shampoo lady into our mission and get my hair colored and glossed. She said she wanted to see it through until the end. The result a beautiful, chocolate round, bouncy bob. I could not be happier!! Sure, do I want long straight blonde hair when I have short, curly brown hair. Yes. But in that quest, I ruined my hair. She brought it back to life and I no longer look like a mangy dog. I could go on and on but the point is GO SEE MEG! She is as sweet and personable as she is talented. My only gripe, which hello this is New York City was it turned out to be a pretty pricey day after I bought product. The cut was very reasonably priced. I think for demi permanent color it was steep. But, Im really hopeful this color is actually going to lock into my hair. I really have hope that the color and products they use are worth the extra money. None the less, its hard to put a price on no longer feeling ugly. She was a dream to work with and I highly recomend her. I just can't believe the transformation she did on my hair. What a gal! Worst hair dresser experience ever! I came to get some highlights and ended up with yellow roots for 270 dollars! The stylist Meg did a terrible job and I had do go back to get it " fixed ". A day later I went back, and she tried to get the gold out of my hair, now it is dark and dull and there are no highlights visible. So I paid a lot of money for ruined hair, and although the " fix -appointemt " was free, i have never seen a more amateur salon. Dont go there, they do not listen and they rip you off for bad results! A normal Half head highlights should be easy, and they really had no clue what they were doing. read more
