She made sure I understood what I would need to do to adapt my home styling techniques to the cut in order to achieve maximum day-to-day awesome. The cut has evolved over time to accommodate the way my hair grows out and certain tweaks that make the style wear well. Shea doesn't work from a set menu of haircuts she's familiar with and good at, she listens carefully to both me and to my hair in order to shape just the right style for me. During my short residency in Austin (less than a year), I can say one of the things I will miss the most at leaving this city is Kate. She is spectacular at taking my rambling, 20 picture, abstract description of the look I'm going for and turning it into EXACTLY what I'm envisioning. She's also a healthy hair advocate and has helped me resuscitate my sad lifeless blonde into a shimmering, dimensional color that I get frequent compliments on. She's managed to strike a perfect balance between my high maintenance desires and low maintenance reality while also evening out a years old shag/mullet I could never seem to shake. She is a magician. She even removed an impulsive swathe of fuchsia from my hair with nary a trace left. HOW?! I will truly miss my appointments with Kate and I didn't even mind the drive from Northwest Austin to South Lamar - which is really saying something. So I just came from my appt with Shea and it is no exaggeration to say that she has been the best stylist I've ever had. My brunette hair has a tendency to look brassy or yellow anytime I've tried to lighten it, so I'm always a little hesitant to go that route. She gave me an amazing yet subtle ombré and trim and it's the best my hair has ever looked... I don't know how she does it... Magic fingers or hands.. Something. I'll definitely be back to see her. Also, appointment making was super easy and upon arrival I was greeted happily and given a water... I had two actually since Shea spent a good deal of time combing out my ridiculously tangled hair. I went to Brooke Boales, and she was great! She took her time and made sure that every strand of hair on my head was exactly like I wanted it to be. I got so many complements after I left the salon. Heather is fab. Took me down to a pixie and I'm lovin' it (so the pic in my profile...not exactly accurate these days). Plus she gives free in-between-haircuts trims (which is standard for some stylists but not all), which is super. Location is good for me, down at S 1st & Oltorf. Parking is easy. All good. The only reason for a 4 instead of a 5 is convenience: because the stylists are independent, there's not one central number to call, you have to call each stylist to book, and then there's the inevitable phone tag, the "what day works for you" voicemails....it's kind of a pain. If you're clever, which I'm not always, you remember to book your next appt before you leave your last one. If you don't think to do that, it's annoying. read more

I've been seeing Marcy Hoen for my follicular needs for about 6 years now & couldn't be happier!!! She does such amazing color & cut that I STILL get stopped 2 months after my last appointment to ask who does my hair! (I'm lazy about getting to the salon... my bad.) If that's not a testament to her expertise, I don't know what is. I've seen her work miracles with all types... long or short, healthy or fried, curly or straight. Salon Sovay has a nice setting, plenty of parking, very relaxed, very friendly. Everyone there is real nice, no attitudes. How often can you say that about a salon? I'm happy Marcy is at Salon Sovay, but I would still follow her to the ends of the earth, so I hope she doesn't leave Austin anytime soon. :) read more

I've been going to Henri for color since 2000 or so, then started having him also cut my hair about 4 years ago. I have yet to find anyone who does a better job! I have been living in Washington DC for the past few years and always had to get my hair done when I was home in Austin for a visit. My hair is very thick but fine and he always makes it look great. Henri, who is French, is also more interesting than your average person - he is a trapeze artist and photographer as well as stylist! read more

Keri Moss is a MIRACLE WORKER. She took my pathetic head of hair which was comprised of various lengths of between 1" and 4" to long, amazing sexy hair. Seriously--she changed my life. Well, maybe not my life, but certainly my image!! From ho-hum-30-something-mom looks to rocking-30-something-mom-that-looks-like-she's-in-her-mid-twenties looks. She's brilliant. If you have ever considered getting hair extensions--do it, but go to Keri. She uses Hot Heads brand extensions which last for 10 weeks between visits, and you can reapply them up to 4 times. THEY ARE A FRACTION of what you would pay elsewhere, too. Instead of sitting at the salon for an entire day, the whole process from dowdy to gorgeous took about 90 minutes. Go see Jenna. I've been bouncing around random folks for a while, when I met Jenna. I was sold before she even finished my first cut. I've been going to see her for over a year now. Now that she has moved down past the river, I still visit her from N. Austin. I'd rather be a shaggy bastard than have someone else cut my hair. I give Jenna total freedom to do what she thinks will look best. She has helped me change hairstyles three times in a year, and I have gotten TONS of compliments along the way. After reading the rave reviews, I called to schedule an appointment with Heather. Sadly, she informed me that she is no longer accepting new clients but plans to again at some undetermined future time. So sad. I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have been taken in by Sovay! I've been to stylists in top salons all over the country (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc) and she's been one of the BEST. As a man, my hair is supposed to be no big deal. Of course, it IS a big deal! No man wants to be seen sporting a bad, or even a boring haircut. And I have difficult hair: very straight when short, curling up slightly when longer, growing at different rates in certain spots. I had a terrible outcome with Elisabeth. I provided a full, written color formula from a previous looooooong-time hairdresser so I know what that combo does on my hair and it always works when applied correctly. She used the same product line and still didn't get the color right. I went with a lopsided (on the right side) haircut from someone I tried the time before. Liz made it lopsided on the other side (left). I've even had people comment that they feel sorry for my outcome because it looks so bad. I had to ask her to stop cutting because she only kept making it worse. After FOUR hours with her, the final work product was terrible. She is a nice enough person but not a skilled cosmetologist. Writing a bad review is never something I want to do but I think others should be forewarned. read more

I went to Kate after she was recommended to me though the lovely gal who does my nails (Vernoica at the same place-go to her...she's lifechanging). I came to Kate with a lighter, brassier brown, and some grown out highlights. Kate was perfect at recommending what she could do that would get the results I wanted without compromising the integrity of my hair. We decided on a mocha to golden ombre and a cut with some long layers. I was there for 3 hours on a Friday night and Kate was absolutely amazing throughout the entire process! I found this place for my first haircut in Austin and it's amazing. I got my haircut from Kelly and she is very friendly and professional. She knew exactly what I wanted. I have such a fine hair so I couldn't really do anything much to my hair but the style she added to it looks natural and lovely. I spent a lot of time looking for the right colorist, having already been to a couple I wasn't very pleased with. I went into research mode and finally found Keri, who is awesome! She knew what I wanted/understood what I asked for and got it right! She was awesome enough to get me in at 10 (an hr before their normal business hrs) too, which was excellent because I had to work that afternoon. I am so happy I found her! The only problem is that it can be hard to book her if you have a tight schedule. :-) She is one of the best stylists I've worked with for the reason that she cares about the client more than the money. A-MAZ-ING!!! Today was my first appointment with Veronica and it certainly won't be my last. I got a shellac manicure and regular pedicure. Everything about the experience was great. Veronica was friendly and her work was flawless. She was so patient with me when I first got there and couldn't decide on a nail color. She even "tested" out a couple of colors and now I am very satisfied with what I ended up choosing. She took her time doing everything and I left feeling relaxed and happy. Kelly Magee is a miracle worker! I had just gotten my hair done at another salon -- twice! having to go in a second time to get it corrected. Still wasn't what I wanted; it was super-brassy and yellow-orange (not a flattering shade of blonde at all). So I looked around for another well-reviewed salon and landed on Sovay. Salon Savoy is a very chic but casual Austiny salon. Friendly staff and if you use Anthony you will leave happy. He is great with men's styles. Gave my husband a much needed style, that I love. Loved itttt! Usually salons freak out when they see my hair cause i have so many colors going on in my head...;; But keri definitely got it down when i asked her what i wanted. She knew what to do, and she genuinely cared about my hair and how i looked.
