Salon Pure is it! Chandra is my girl. I have curly hair - I'm Puerto Rican - and no one has ever quite known what to do with my hair for my entire 33 years on the planet. My coworker, disgusted by the bun I rocked every day for more than a year, literally dragged me in after work. First of all the place looks so cute, very funky and everyone who works there is eye-candy in an eclectic, cool way. Staff are super friendly. Chandra consulted with me for a perfect amount of time. She knew exactly what to do as a fellow curly mop top - including thinning my extremely thick hair, shaping and weighting it so it all would fall right. I've never received more compliments on my hair before, people comment on it all the time now. The shampooing is fantastic. It's a scalp massage, wonderful products and they take their time. Do I need to remind you how great Scott is...YES!!! He listens very carefully to what you like and dislike, not to many stylist have that gift. I was way over due for a cut, my ends were completely damage, had lots of split ends, I simply could not style (curl or flat iron) my hair anymore. I was getting tired of braiding my hair- trying to hide all the damage. Let's just say this was the worst my hair had ever been, but only until now that Scott got rid of all the damage, well at least 95% of it. I have been fortunate to get my appointments at time of need. I do recommend calling at least 1-2 weeks in advance, specially since he is almost always booked. I've had Erica cut and dye my hair for the past couple of years and have never, ever had even a remotely not-good experience. She always listens and makes it look exactly how I want it! I had her coloring it blonde until last week when I decided to go red (!). Absolutely, exactly how I wanted it, and everyone likes it. If you park at the lot on main street, it is $15 to get your car washed while you get your hair done. not a bad deal considering just parking is almost that much anyway in downtown! read more

I identify myself as African American, but I also have a strong dose of Native American blood running through my veins. So, my hair, as lovely as it is, tends to have a mind of its own - I can have wash and go curls one day, a big luscious Afro the next, a big frizzball Afro the next, straight as a bone two days later, and wavy the next. Needless to say, because my hair has multiple personalities, it can be more than a challenge to do. I've had disasterous experiences with Caucasian stylists in the past. Often, black stylists apply too much heat or products that are too heavy for my hair. When I find a stylist who can work with my hair, I stick with them. But because I move so often, I find myself on a too frequent search. When I enter a new salon, I do so trepedatiously because I think I have salon PTSD. With that background, I write about Salon Pure. I went to the salon based on the good Yelp reviews. Sirene was my stylist. I'll admit that I had little confidence that I'd have a positive experience due to assumptions I made based on disasters at other salons. I was dead wrong. I got a wash and curl. Sounds simple enough, but belive me that it can go so wrong. Sirene gave me a great massage with my wash, and proceeded to style my hair like a pro. She was attentive and really listened to what I wanted. She used a Marcel hot iron which really locked in my curls. She promised big, sexy curls that would last for several days, and she totally delivered. I actually walked out with my hair in pin curls, by request because I was going straight home. But, the next day, when I pulled out the pins, my hair was gorgeous. Sirene gave me one of the best wash and curls I've ever had. I love Salon Pure! I have been going there for about 2 years now. Chandra is my stylist and she is absolutely pro when it comes to my hair. I have TONS of wavy hair and I have always been apprehensive about letting someone cut it as it has to be cut a certain way to still curl, not be frizzy, etc. Chandra really listens to what I want each time and she gets it - spot on every time. As for color, wow! I just went to her last week and I am completely thrilled about my hair. I wanted to do it a bit different this time and I knew it was going to be hard to explain to someone else. But the way that Chandra consults with me before she starts each time is amazing. She asks the right questions and really makes sure I will be getting what I want. She is super friendly and professional. As for the salon... it is beautiful and simple at the same time and the ambiance is very chill and friendly. They play great music and they have iPads to play with while you get your hair done :) As for the price... I have paid much more at other salons and not gotten anywhere near the level of service and friendliness I get here. It is well worth it. Along those lines, I tried to cheap out once and ended up paying the consequences. I am not rich, but I decided that a price cannot be put on my hair. Judy is an artist and your head is her canvas. Salon Pure has a wonderful vibe and much to offer to the evolving landscape of Downtown. I value the experience of returning to the same stylist every visit, and Judy Song has made my decision to become a regular at Pure worth it. We have gotten pretty friendly and she is excellent at fitting my desired image to the capabilities of my specific hair type. She takes her time and can offer useful styling advice. Pure is the best combination of quality and style in Downtown. Getting there is also wonderfully convenient on the Metro Red/Purple Line (exit Pershing Square Station). I also get a student discount. Given the combination of Judy's skillful service and the aforementioned convenience, there isn't any other Salon I would rather go to. read more

My friend had raved about Scott at Salon Pure downtown right near me, so I went in for an appointment. It's a cool little place, nice and bright. I went here for the first time in 3 years and Scott did my hair. I LOVE IT! I have very short hair and have been all over Los Angeles and Bev Hills trying to find someone I liked. I'm pregnant and so my hair is thicker than normal and I wasn't sure what to do but he was great. It's easy to style and looks good several different ways. I honestly couldn't have been any happier. He was also very friendly and made me feel really comfortable during my visit which was nice. Like I mentioned, I am pregnant and I actually got a little queasy during my hair cut and the whole team came to help me. Chandra is simply WONDERFUL!! (SHE gets a full 5 Stars) She's tamed my wild tresses into beautifully manageable locks and even convinced me to change it up -- I love rocking out the bangs now. She's always able to get me in for my regular trims and can even eek in a hot minute for a bang trim between clients. Across the street from Cole's at 6th & Main, this little salon has a modern/urban feel with cool details like exposed brick. When you go here, which you must, ask for Tonantzin. She's the best stylist I've ever been to, and since I started going to her I will NEVER let anyone else touch my hair. I have really thick, wavy/curly hair and a LOT of it. (about four heads worth, according to other stylists) Because of this, it is hard for some stylists to get it frizz free and they have also charged me at least double their normal prices. Tonantzin always leaves my hair looking spectacular. Every time I leave the salon I look and feel like a movie star and I don't have to touch my hair for at least four days after. I guess that's one benefit of having thick hair. :) She is great at everything. I've had my hair many different colors and she always gets it exactly how I want it. She is also very helpful if you're not sure what to do. I've seen her make women look at least ten years younger with just a simple color and cut. And men are always impressed that they can go more than a month before they need another haircut. The salon is really cool too! JUDY'S MY GIRL! Ever since I started having $ in LA, I've gone to Judy and she's always been so wonderful, attentive, and fun. She's always up on the newest cutting edge happenings in the industry so whenever I have a vision for a new do, I have no doubt that she can execute. The best thing is that she takes your vision and customizes and adjusts for your face shape, skin tone, and style. It's like she has this enormous database inside of her of techniques - thinks outside the box to achieve the look you're going for. She's a true artist (literally, i asked for ombre and she pretty much eyed it and hand-painted on the bleach to get that blended look) The decor in the salon is really unique - lots of wood and copper and they're always playing dope music. Basically, it's always money when you can go to a hair stylist and have absolutely no hesitation or fear. I have been to many stylists over the years and I can finally say I've found my stylist.. Sara Matts is amazing stylist. She caters to what you want, and will give you suggestions that others haven't given me in the past. I have semi-long hair and she was able to sculpt exactly how i've wanted others to shape it, but they weren't able to. I am a professional and I like to keep my hair a bit longer.. she was able to shape my hair so it can be both professional and i guess "hip" for when I go out. haha . My hair is extremely easy to do in the AM now, which saves me significant time. Also she has great product knowledge.. so if you're looking for something specific but do not know how to find it, she'll find it. I am finally off the search for a good stylist . I really went out on a limb here and decided to get a mohawk. this was a big deal for me, always had boringish guys haircuts. So i decided to make an adventure of it, metro'd downtown and found Salon Pure. I was the only customer and Robby was very personable and attentive. The real magic? Robby's hands cut fantastic hair. Hi called up Salon Pure this morning because my hair turned orange after being a hair model at another salon earlier this weekend. At this other salon, they put in way too many highlights and used an orangey color as a base. I know the girl had good intentions--but I looked like Wynonna on that Alli commercial. And I when I put my hair up, I noticed my hairline was entirely orange (which looked terrible against my skin color)...I could not go into work looking like that! I was freaking out all weekend. And finally decided I couldn't live with the orange hair. By Monday morning I knew I needed to do something. Salon Pure was one of the only salons I could find that was open on a Monday. I've been going to Salon Pure on and off, since I've been living in downtown (about 3.5 years) I've been here 4 times. Not consistent, but still love their stylists. I began with Eugene, who left for NY, and then Erika took care of me (Erika also happens to be the owner). Erika knows hair! I used to have long flowing locks and she was awesome with them. Recently, I went in for a fixing trim (about a month ago)- I had chopped my hair off and my colorist/stylist gave me a very blunt cut, so come a month later it was growing in to be awkward. Gave Salon Pure a call and they booked me an appointment with Cara same day, within the hour. And Cara is awesome! Super sweet with a great personality and she can cut hair. She definitely gave my blunt-cut, short hair some dimension and volume and it turned out fab! I would recommend this place to anyone. It can run a little on the pricer side, $80 for my short hair trim, but totally worth it. I have yet to get color done, since I am pretty loyal to my colorist. So pretty much, I met Chandra at a friend's loft one night, and upon finding out she was a colorist across the street from my building, I asked her what to do. At that point, my hair was a rainbow of natural blonde roots, to red blonde, to red, to red brown, to brown, to brown black, to black fried split ends. Mess. She gave me a card and told me to come in for corrective coloring. So I did. She gave me the best haircut of my life, basically. Stripped all the dye out of my hair, and did it in layers so my roots ended up the same color as my poor mistreated ends. Mixed two colors of red (cherry bomb & cherry cocktail, I was looking for a cherry red color) and put it on for half an hour under heat. Unfortunately, my hair turned out the most insane hot pink color ever because it will not hold dye ever at all. Fortunately, I loved it. She offered to add another layer of color to make it a deeper pink/red, but I declined. She told me about the red shampoo & conditioner from Bumble&bumble, which smells amazing and is holding my color so so so well. Total for five hours in a salon, with my first time 15% off? $300. And so worth it. I walked out with an amazing style that is so versatile and easy. I can leave it down, put it up, blow dry & go, or style it up. She's the sweetest girl, too. Everyone there is. I highhhhlyyyyy recommend this salon. The music, the atmosphere, the product, the stylists....everything is amazing and you WILL leave feeling like a rock star :) read more

I moved to Los Angeles about three years ago from SF, and was not happy about having to abandon the wonderful stylist I had found in the Bay, but Judy has never left me disapointed. She has done a cut and color on me three times now, and also did my hair for my wedding, and every time she did a superb job. I am not one to come back into the salon every two months to touch up my roots, so Judy does my color/highlights/lowlights in such a way that grows out very naturally and lasts a long time. I never have unnatural looking color lines in my hair from the out-growth, etc., and the color does not fade into some overly brassy color. She also gives me great, simple haircuts that grow out nicely. For my wedding, she did an amazing up-do with no consultation appointment, ie, I just came on the big day and she figured it out. Plus, my hair was barely at my shoulders at the time. I moved up to Sherman Oaks recently, but I continue going to Judy downtown because I know I will always leave happy. read more

A good haircut is worth more than the most flattering outfit you could buy. a good salon needs to have a good environment, competent and attentive stylists, and an attention to quality that doesn't cost you a fortune. Salon Pure has all of these. Cara has trimmed, cut and done fantastic extensions for me (for a very reasonable price considering some other salons nearby whose names I won't mention). The head massage while they clean your hair is swoon-worthy, and wash basins they use are super comfortable. I've never been bruised by them and I've got a pretty sensitive head! Got my highlights done with Chelsea yesterday and I've gotten so many compliments! It was a lengthy process but she absolutely knows what she's doing! I felt like my hair was her masterpiece. Super professional and extremely nice. However, I must say every stylist I've had at Salon Pure has always been a STAR! I heart this place. I live in Hollywood but was downtown for art walk the other night and thought this place looked non-chani like and nice. I looked on yelp and saw some raves about Scott and booked my appointment. Let me say this... I cut my own hair and have for years. I used to live in NYC and have gotten my touch ups at Ted Gibson and Nick Arrojo because, really, if someone is doing it they better not be Supercuts. My hair is Mia Farrow/Audrey Hepburn true pixie short. I have wavy hair with crazy cowlicks and am hard to please. I think part of why I cut my own hair is that I feel bad for the stylist- I'm one tough customer. Scott wasn't intimidated, he jumped right in! He spent a good ammount of time really listening to what I want and what I hate. He managed to make my insane hairline look neat while keeping my 'do it yourself' look intact. He is super friendly and nice without being distracted from his work. I felt relaxed and happy and felt the price was super reasonable since my cut took about an hour. BEST haircut I have ever had. I wanted something new, cool and kind of funky and Scott gave me exactly that. Goodbye boring hair, hello fun fresh and hot hair! I have very curly hair and it has always somewhat difficult to find a stylist that is able to tame it (WITHOUT OPTING TO STRAIGHTEN IT). Stephani was absolutely amazing! Being that my hair is curly, it seems to grow out not down so I've been wanting extensions for some time now. I finally decided to do it. Stephani was able to match my hair color and curl perfectly!! I got the individual extensions and loveee the way my hair lays- it's blended perfectly. She finished with a dark gloss and the color looks great! And decided to come back 3 hours later. They took us right in without a problem, even though the door was locked. This was a last minute deal. No appointment which I highly recommend you do an appointment just in case. Atmosphere, feels welcoming even though they were short handed. They Took their time with my friends hair. A deep wash and a clean cut. We pretty let the stylist do her thing and trust her. The results were pleasing and new. Though the price surprised us a bit. 50 dollars for a male haircut... we are normally just pay 20 dollars at other locations, but the results are way different. Would we be back? I don't go quite that often, but every time I do, I am very pleased with what I come out with. The service is fast and pleasant. The prices are reasonable considering it's a high end salon. This likely is a 5-star salon, but since it was my first visit to a pricey salon, I have nothing to compare it to! Scott was my stylist and he was terrific - friendly, attentive, and a perfectionist. He also massages your scalp and neck during the shampoo! I had extremely heavy, thick hair with bad coloring and split ends that hadn't been cut in months, and he did a great job of layering it and lightening my load. The best thing about the haircut was that it didn't look choppy at all. It wasn't one of those "Look at me! I'm Japanese" haircuts. The cut was markedly different from my former one-length style, but seamless and clean. After 2 days, the cut still looks good and is manageable and low-maintenance.
