I decided to try this salon because of a Livingsocial deal. Even after reading the great reviews here, I was still surprised! Pam recreated the cut and highlights on the pictures I showed her, and the overall style really flatters me. We didn't talk too much, but I'm secretly glad to finally have a stylist who doesn't get all awkward with the silence. I was almost worried about how little time it took Pam to cut my hair - but it turned out just right and saved me precious time I would have wasted on other stylists. She put more foils than other salons for just a "partial hightlight," and the strands are carefully picked out and very natural looking. This is my favorite hightlighting experience so far. I will be coming back on full price :) PS I LOVE being able to make an appointment online. The system sent me a confirmation reminder a couple days before the appointment. It just makes everything so much easier! read more

Brittany gave me the most flawless and natural looking color before my wedding day! She did such a great job working with my blonde hair. She is definitely skilled at her craft. Can't wait to get married and photographed with such a beautiful color! The salon was also clean and professional. They were great about getting me an appointment quickly and working with my schedule. It's a really good location too. I will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends! read more

Tice is a great stylist. It took me a long time to find a salon to fit me. Always look forward to my five week appointment. Great conversation or if I just want to rest, they're respectful. read more

I've been coming to see Brittany for a couple of years now. She has done cuts and color for me. She always listens to what I want, and also helps me make good reasonable choices. She was helping me go lighter for a while, and then back to my natural. My highlights/balyage/color always looks super natural but have tons of dimension. The other stylists all seem to do good work as well. Angus, whose station is next to Brittany is always super charming. But I'm a Brittany devotee. Brittany also did bridal hair for my friend's wedding (bride, MOB and bridesmaids) on site. Brittany was awesome and did everyone's hair to suit their style (and it lasted through the ceremony and dancing)! She also was so laid back and friendly that everyone felt really comfortable around her. We were sad when she was done and leaving, because we just enjoyed hanging out with her. read more

From the moment you walk in the door everyone is so friendly. I am always nervous about finding somewhere to get my haircut because I have curly hair. But Tice was amazing! She really listen to me and did exactly what I asked and I left feeling like 1 million bucks. read more

I love getting my hair (fixed) when I go there my hair needs an upgrade and they are the ones to do it right.

Called last minute this morning and was able to get an appointment with Erica. Knew I needed to cover the gray but that was about it. Turned it all over to her, the color, the highlights & the cut. Was not disappointed. Awesome experience!! Can certainly tell that all of the stylists at Salon Povera are talented and experienced. Watching them work was like watching a stage production, each handling the tools of their trade with panache while interacting with their clients without skipping a beat. It was obvious that most of the clients were of long standing and were treated with fond familiarity. Patrick shares his wealth of knowledge on style and color with each of his clients with passion. Angus was interesting to watch but even better to listen to - you can definitely tell he "ain't from around here." Brittany is a dynamo, wielding color brush, blow dryer and the BIGGEST round brush I have ever seen, while carrying on conversation with her clients. Pam turned a bob into a BOB today that would have stood up against the one Victoria Beckham wore & must have paid really big bucks for! All in all, I would say that I really hit the jackpot today. Definitely will be back Thanks Erica! I know that I won't always be lucky enough to get an an appointment with the same day. :-) read more

Trust is the most important part of a relationship.... With your hairstylist. And I have never trusted anyone with my hair as I do Brittany Rich. Watching her work on my hair is akin to what I imagine watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine chapel is like. She is so focused, deliberate, and meticulous - and everything looks perfect every time. I used to be scared of getting my hair done - for me it was like what going to the dentist is like for some people. Brittany changed that, and she was the very first person I ever trusted to do color in my hair. Now I am a convert. She had done ombré, highlights, and Balayage. She also always cuts my hair to perfection and does not take off more than we agree upon. Furthermore, since she knows I am scared of getting my hair done, she walks me through everything she is doing. I followed her from her former salon, and the new space at Povera is very sleek and modern. The owner is very nice and friendly. The layout is open so there are no mysteries. You can see them mixing the color just across the room. read more

Today I went to Salon Povera for the first time. It is next to my favorite brow place. The person who welcomed me was really sweet and made me a nice warm cup of coffee that felt great for a rainy day (I feel bad for not remembering her name). Pam was my stylist. She is amazing, sweet and provided me with great advice for my hair style and texture. The hair cut was beyond perfect. We also enjoyed a great chat while getting my hair done. It's my new place to go and I wish them the best luck and success. You won't be disappointed. read more

I have been going to Brittany for years now and followed her here to this new location for her. She always does a fabulous job with my highlights (I'm often asked who did them) as well as with the cuts. I also appreciate her diligence with the products she uses on me as I have multiple allergies and she takes the time to check ingredients. Despite my moving across the triangle a couple years ago I still head her way:) The salon is also a nice open sleek spot as others have mentioned, as well as easy to get in and out of with plenty of parking right there. read more

Having chosen this salon on the basis of Yelp reviews I feel obligated to share my less than stellar experience. I asked for Soft ballayage highlights and to cover the grays at my crown, not sure how to describe what I have, think all over shoe polish brown hair with chunky orangish slashes in the front and blond in the back. Very Dull and drab with no shine. the cut was more of a trim than a cut despite my having brought a picture of what I wanted. A style that requires more than an ends trim, which is all I got. Who cuts hair that is dripping wet? I mean dripping down my back! At that point all I wanted to do was get out I can hide my hair by pulling it up but I foresee very short hair in my near future, think twice before choosing this salon! read more

What a wonderful find!! Look how consistent and high the reviews are for Salon Povera! Yes, always a negative mugwort or two but wow this is a great place with excellent stylists! I chose PATRICK to recut my hair, but I feel strongly that the other stylists would have been great choices due to the other reviews. I loved that Patrick understood my finer hair and could see immediately where the last cut went wrong. As a hairdresser from a zillion years ago I could feel and see Patrick assess and reassess my locks as he went along. He is truly an artist and understands the mathematics of an exceptional cut. This place is near Southpoint Mall over ACROSS the street from the Kroger (which may be shut down soon?) and McD's-- Right next to the new Sprouts Grocery Market on Rt 54!! Salon Povera also offers online bookings via various sites where you can see prices for their offerings. Anyway, its been almost 15 years since I got a 'real' haircut (terribly too long hair) and I am glad that Patrick snipped my locks and ran his fingers thru my hair. THANK YOU, PATRICK. read more

What can I say about my hair salon and my colorist....other than it is owned by one of the nicest and most creative hair designers I know. I love Patrick and I love his new salon. Can't wait for my next appt. I have been a big fan of Patrick of almost two years - he's created the most beautiful color for me. As a woman in middle-age (OMG!) I love the way I feel, when Patrick gets his hands (and creative mind) on my hair! Last Summer my hair was purplish - pink and then dark purple for Autumn and Winter. It looked great and I felt like a million bucks! I always look forward to getting my hair cut and colored by Patrick...because I always feel like a new woman, when I leave his chair! Thank you for always making me feel special. read more

I just got back from my first appointment and I had to write a review right away. I scheduled an appointment for a color correction and haircut. I got partial highlights at a salon in Virginia a couple months ago. I have naturally jet black hair and I went in for some subtle partial highlights that does not look drastic from my natural look. The lady went a little overboard with the bleach and put me under heat for more than 30 mins. After a few weeks, my hair started to look like it had tiger stripes on it. I got so many negative comments. I looked up salons close by in Durham and I am SO GLAD I came across Salon Povera. I mean what place has a 5 star review by more than 30 people these days? NONE. Especially in the salon industry, it is very difficult to have so many customers satisfied. Since it was my first time, I trusted what the previous reviewers had to say and went with Brittany. I have been to quite a few salons before but I can say with confidence that I am yet to come across a stylist that is as passionate and meticulous with hair color than her. She paid attention to every single detail I had to give her and knew what she was doing. I had my hair color restored back to my natural color and even though we were doing permanent color, she was honest about how this might also become a little light over time (due to the terrible bleach streaks underneath) but said it will not go back to what I initially walked in with. I know it is too much to say right after I got it done and you probably think I need to wait a few days to say this but I have enough experience to say how satisfied I am and will be with what she has done to my hair. Can't wait to go back for my next appointment in a few months! Convenient location (barely 5 mins from Southpoint mall), affordable prices (my overall color plus cut and blowdry cost me $140), and educated staff. This salon is a MUST visit if you're around Durham area. read more

I can't say enough great things about Salon Povera! The vibe is welcoming and comfortable, the staff is friendly and cheerful and the stylists are super knowledgable and passionate. I see Pam Byers and love that she is so open to talking about all of my options and possibilities for color and cut. She has exceeded my expectations each and every time I've sat in her chair. Every time that I have an appointment, it's a complete experience. They know that it's not just about your hair. It's about feeling confident and happy. Mission accomplished! read more

This is a late review but I must say I loved my experience I have thin hair so it's difficult for me to have someone examine my hair. I reached out in a private message and they were kind and understanding. Had my consultation with Tice and she was great! Made me feel really comfortable. Then went in for a cut and again they're all very welcoming. I'm new to the area and I will say this is now my go-to salon. I fully trust them with my hair care. Thank you! read more

Salon Povera is owned by one of the nicest and most friendly owners. It's hard for me to trust people with my curly hair, but Patrick made me feel comfortable from the very start. I told him about the problems I often have and talked to him about hair color. After giving me multiple suggestions, he pretty much told me what he wanted to do and his plan. I trusted him and it was really nice having someone tell me what they think the plan should be and why. I loved watching him enjoy cutting my curly hair. He was able to get me in during the busy holidays and he is very easy to communicate with through txt. After having to go in for a quick touch up, I love my hair cut and new color. Also, I don't consider this place to be any more expensive than any other salon I have visited (for my hair cut and color). read more

I recommend Salon Povera and Erica, in particular! I was able to schedule a next-day appointment online, which was very convenient and simple. All staff and customers wear masks the entire time, which made me comfortable. Erica was friendly but not overly chatty, which was perfect for me. I asked for 10 inches off for Locks of Love, and the staff was experienced in this process, providing the bands and baggie and offering me mailing advice. I have super thick hair and wanted an easy-to-manage cut. Erica fully delivered - I love my haircut! She dried and styled it for me, too. Her price is super reasonable, even on my student budget. The salon was full of happy people. I will be returning! read more

I absolutely loved my experience at Salon Povera! I'm relatively new in town and was not excited about having to find a new hair salon. Waaaay too expensive!!!! I'm visiting the area, and tried this salon based on all of the positive reviews. I reviewed the pricing online, and tried to book an appointment online but ended up calling to request an entry level hairdresser who was good with color for a partial highlight/ color touch up and trim....this usually costs $115-$130 at much nicer salons in Philadelphia, (and less than that elsewhere,) and based on the online pricing I saw I thought I was in the ballpark at least. The salon is small, the hairdresser more experienced, quick and efficient. The color results weren't bad, but a little lighter and brassier than I expected. No conditioning added after the rinse out,... The big problem I had was the $230 bill for the appointment. Lesson learned. I won't go back there, and the next appointment I make with a salon will be in person, requesting a price quote first. read more

I recently got married and decided to go with Salon Povera for our wedding hair and makeup services. I could not have been any more happy with my decision! The Salon Coordinator and Esthetician, Katy, was very quick to respond to my messages and was beyond flexible to ensure all my wedding requests came true. Katy did the makeup for myself and my bridesmaids and we all looked beautiful. Brittany is a hair goddess and created the most beautiful up-do for my wedding. They were willing to travel to the venue and I am so happy I could spend my day getting ready with these women! Thank you Salon Povera! I would recommend them to anyone getting married who is looking for professional, experienced and talented salon services. Thank you! -Katie read more

Tried to schedule an appointment online via their website, but had a question so I called in. The receptionist answered and offered to make my appointment via phone. We confirmed the appointment. I got there at my appointment time, and my name was no where on the calendar. They apologized and offered to schedule another appointment for me with a free bottle of shampoo, but I declined because I was irritated I had arranged my day around the appointment and was counting on a haircut that day. Hopefully they have worked the kinks out of their system. read more

Erica is a goddess, a gorgeous hair styling goddess. When I first moved to NC I had an awful salon experience where I went to get a haircut for my curly hair, my expectations were set at a nicely shaped bob, I walked out with a pixie. Needless to say I was scared from salons for a while. Decided to dip my toe back in and get my hair cut and my purple color professionally done and took a stroll through Yelp reviews. What i read sold me on Salon Povera and I setup a consult with Erica to get her feelings on the state of my hair and the cut I wanted. She was fantastic then, walking me through what she would do and showing me the purple color swatches they had. I was comfortable so booked the appointment. Went in today and from start to finish she was funny, engaging and really took her time to get my hair to what I wanted. I'm so happy with the cut and over the moon with the color. But Erica isn't the only fabulous person at the salon, everyone I interacted with are just absolute sweethearts. I'm so excited to have found my new salon, cant wait to tell others about them and I really encourage that if you're on the fence to setup a consultation, they'll take amazing care of you. read more

Brittany is simply the BEST. I came to her literally crying, because 4 days before I saw Brittany I had a horrible experience with the hairdresser who completely ruined my beautiful long hair. I ended up with awful damaged, very spotty and bright red hair color and my hair was breaking off. On top of this, she cut my hair very short and not even. I was crying for four days, got an anxiety attack and was devastated. Then I found Brittany!!!!! She worked on my hair for 4 hours (even I scheduled only for 2 hours). It was lots of work to correct my hair. I knew it will take a few times until it looks somewhat ok. I was wrong! Even after first time when Brittany finished, it looked beautiful! I can't imaging how it will look after a few times I go back to see Britt. I am so happy again!!!!! I am so thankful that I found her! She is amazingly skilled colorist/hairdresser and a very sweet person! I've found my wonderful master! P.S. Sorry for my English, It's my Second language :) read more

Salon Povera - Color corrective and haircut ( after first try) by Brittany. Amazing job! - Hair Salons Near Me - Durham, North Carolina

Just had my hair washed and trimmed by Pam today. I have suffered through years of bad haircuts and I was beginning to think it was my hair and not the stylist. But Pam restored my confidence in my hair today. I cannot remember the last time I've been so happy with a haircut. So glad I found her and Salon Povera. I will definitely be coming back! read more

wasn't going to leave a review because they gave me a refund but hair isn't like food where you can just screw over someone's whole identity and move on.. i'm sitting on my sink in tears trying to fix the mess myself because i can't trust another stylist. i asked for balayage/ombré and left with chunky CHUNKY highlights that fade from orange to yellow on some strands, some are from white to yellow, and some are even white to yellow to orange. i'm literally heartbroken. i wanted solid blonde which i thought we agreed on because she asked me what color i wanted. if she couldn't do a balayage she should have told me. she even called me on the phone after i complained and tried to say "i did foils, balayage is a technique" like wtf how am i supposed to know about that stuff?? i ask you for something and you deliver, it's not my job to know wtf foils are. i'm just so upset i think i'm going to cut my hair short. it's damaged and breaking off. it's dry. it's ugly. also owner said "sorry you are unhappy with the result" instead of saying "sorry my stylist screwed you over" and also tried telling me i asked for highlights when the word highlights never left my mouth. upsetting. at least i got my $250 back i guess, but if anything these people should be paying me because i'm sitting here & i am legitimately considering shaving my head. read more

This a small, intimate salon where you always feel like queen for a day. I am neurotically particular about my hair and have tried a bunch of stylists all over the triangle. FINALLY I found my very own hair guru in Lane Clements. He manages to not only give me a great cut, but also helps me achieve a natural, vibrant color. I like to dye my hair red. Ladies who color their hair auburn know how hard it is to find a colorist who leaves you looking more Christina Hendricks than Ronald McDonald. I can't recommend the folks here enough! read more

I've been salon hopping in Durham for the past 3 or so years trying to find "my" place. I had given up on finding a salon where I felt like I wanted to return and had resigned myself to skipping around and hoping for the best. Not anymore, Salon Povera is my place and Brittany is my stylist. I've gone to her for cuts and color and let me tell you, she is amazing. It's like she reads my mind or something because she just seems to get exactly what I'm going for and the results are just phenomenal. Not to mention she is super friendly and personable. The salon itself is small but welcoming. There's no air of pretentiousness here and I've never felt like a lesser customer for not wanting a more extreme cut or color like I have at some of the trendy spots downtown. Pricing is reasonable and par for the course, and the quality is definitely there. read more
