We tried almost every place near our home, including the expensive ones, but now I think it's totally worth the drive to Mary's salon, even though it's a bit far. My kid had searched online for a style he liked a long time ago, and every attempt before we came to Mary was a disappointment. I had to lower his expectations, telling him that the style he wanted might require more than just a haircut, possibly a perm or some special styling. I went to Mary's to get a bob cut and fortunately was able to squeeze me in for a 6pm appointment the same day. Getting to Mary's was a bit stressful because the street lights are sparse and the amount of trees/shrubs makes it almost pitch black after the sun goes down. Mary also doesn't have a sign in front of her house to signal people to turn inside, so even with GPS it's very easy to miss her house (the house is hidden behind a narrow driveway). Once you're at her house, there's no instructions to get to the basement. It's a gate at the left of the house featuring a steep descent. There's not an alternate path to get to her basement so people with specific physical impairments should probably not use her service. Also, if it's pitch black, it's very easy to fall. Once you manage to get to her basement, it's a very straightforward process. She tells you as you're scheduling the appointment that she's cash only and the amount ($60 for the haircut). She gave me a wash and went through my hair with care. She'll also turn on some videos on the tablet and have the heat on to keep you comfortable (this was on a cold day). It was very pleasant experience! We were the only ones in the room which is nice if you like that feel of exclusivity. Since this was a basic cut, I don't have any comments about how well it was done. It looked okay to me and she'll have recommendations for how to style your hair afterwards if you're interested. Also, Mary's family has a dog, so I'm not sure if people who have dog allergies would want to avoid the service. She does keep her dog out of the basement/salon room, though. read more

This is my second review for Mary - wanted time give an update since needs are so different during COVID. I work as an Infection Preventionist at one of the top hospitals in the nation and so keeping folks safe is huge on my mind right now. My two kids (now 5 and 2) and I go for all our cuts together, so we're there for about 1.5 hours total-a fair amount of time to spend in an inclosed space during a pandemic. When I called to ask about scheduling a physical distancing conscious cut, Mary was so flexible. She was happy to bring a salon chair onto the shaded backyard patio to accommodate the three of us, with a quick trip inside for my hair wash. She was masked the whole time and expertly cut my daughter's and my hair with our masks on. Mary is great. She's quick to respond when you book an appointment, and can always fit you in under short notice. She works hard and is very sweet to talk to. However, she gave me a very ugly haircut and color that I now have to go to another salon to get it fixed. Her price is reasonable, and I'm happy to pay given her hard work and effort, but I'm sad that she really ruined my hair... In conclusion, if you don't mind to be handled in a rough way (your hair and scalp will hurt during washing/brushing) and are a lot more blunt in giving directions on what exactly you want, she can still be a good option to you. read more

The WORST experience I've ever had!! Overpriced and not professional! I wanted to get the bottom layer of my hair bleached and dyed platinum but leave the top layer black. So you'll only see the platinum when I move my hair or tie my hair up. I found this place on Yelp and Red Book, and I've read so many good reviews about it. All the reviews said Mary was sweet, professional, and her pricing was very reasonable. I decided to give it a try. I REGRET it so much! First of all, her salon is located in the basement of her house and I wasn't told this when I booked my appointment. I was so confused when the address led me to a residential area. My appointment was at 3:30 pm, when I walked in, Mary was working on another customer. I waited half an hour for her to be done. I wasn't told the exact pricing when I booked my appointment. Based on all the reviews saying the price is reasonable, I thought I didn't have to worry about being overcharged.... I WAS WRONG!!! This was the MOST EXPENSIVE place I've ever been to! Mary charges $100/hr. It took 4 hours to just bleach and dye the bottom layer of my hair. The whole time when she was dying my hair, she kept answering phone calls, and even got on the phone with a friend for 20 minutes!! I mean... am I paying $100/hr for her to be on the phone for half of the time?? I don't think charging by hour is reasonable at ALL! Mary also doesn't accept credit cards. She only accepts payment through Venmo or cash. A lil sketch for a legit business. What's more sketch was that she told me to not mention anything related to haircut in my Venmo payment to her. She then asked me to pay taxes through Venmo. When I asked how much should I pay for tax, she told me to pay $40. So I paid $440 all together. I just found that whole transaction sketchy and not professional. I don't get why she only receives payments through private transactions on Venmo, and won't let customer disclose the real purpose for that transaction. I paid her anyway. After I got home that night, I noticed the colors looked fucked up on the right side. There were three distinct layers of colors ranging from black to orange to platinum. I was devastated. I just paid $440 for THIS??? So I texted Mary a picture. She said she saw that color problem, but since I was in a hurry to leave to dinner with my friends, she didn't want to keep me from being late. She told me to come back the next day and she'll fix it. So I went back the next day, driving 30 minutes AGAIN to her home to get it fixed. But seriously WHAT THE FUCK. She had no respect for my time or gas. She did apologize but when I told her about my dissatisfaction, she told me that she was being professional for fixing my hair for free. I'm just so disappointed and dissatisfied with my experience. I have a 2 star instead of 1 for Mary's skill in hair cuts. I did really like my haircut. But it was way too overpriced. Definitely not worth $400. I wanted to share my experience and honest feedback on this business. I'm not trying to sabotage her business. I just don't want other people to be misled by good reviews on reasonable pricing (unless if you think $100/hr is reasonable). read more

Mary does a great Japanese Straight Perm, worth the drive; she is down by South Center. Pricing is better than you will get in many Salons that does this hair process. Be prepared to be there 4+ hours (which is the norm, for this process). Mary does work out of a salon at the back of her home, so don't be surprised. It is clean and nice, no worries there. This is way too far from my plave, but I don't mind, as Mary is just great with her work. I have got my hair straightened twice from her, and it has been great both times. She is veru good at her work, and has been doing it for years, she explained me the process and also showed me products that she had specially picked for the treatment and would be using onmy hair. She such a warm and friendly person, and makes her clients feel very comfortable. The treatment takes long hours and so she had given me an early morning appointment. When I reached, she some how sensed that I hadn't had my breakfast, so she offered me soup and boiled eggs and fruits from her garden. She even put up a movie for me, while she worked on my hair. I think I got the better end of the deal for the service i got; it would have cost more if I went elsewhere. I have dry-wavy-frizzy hair so getting a straight perm will make my life in the mornings so much easier! =) I am so happy with the results! I'm not sure why 30 other reviews are not showing up for Mary, but I thought I'd pitch in with all the rave reviews. I went for the Japanese straightening perm with Mary two years ago, and went again last night and just wanted to give her major praise! First of all, it's a home salon, so it may not play trendy music or look super hip, but she has all the equipment and tools required as a hair stylist. She is always so sweet - offering me water and snacks because the process itself can be 3+ hours. I have thick hair and LOTS of it, but she is so patient and thorough making sure to get every piece of hair straightened. That in itself is worth it! Her pricing is very reasonable - in fact after the straightening, she corrected a haircut I had gotten somewhere else, and didn't even charge me for it. She sold me the specific shampoo and conditioner for the Japanese perm (in a refill package), and when I asked about it she said a bottle with less volume would cost the same. She never pushed products on me. She's out of the way, but I'm heavily considering coming back for my regular haircuts because she does such a good job. I haven't had any problems scheduling with her as she had an opening when we talked initially. read more

I have been going to Mary for the Japanese Thermal Straightening since 2007 when she was working at Salon Juno. She now has a salon in her home. I had haircuts and coloring done as well. She always does a great job. She is also accomodating. I called on a Saturday at 11 am and asked if she had time to do a hair straightening the same day. She had appointments until 4pm so I was able to come in at 4:30. This process usually takes about 4 hours since my hair long. It was getting late but she did not rush through the process. She always does a thorough job. I just love how silky my hair is after the procedure. No more frizzy hair for 9 months. I do not think I would trust anyone else to straighten my hair. Her price for this service is very reasonable. At the other high end salons they start at $750.00 and up. My hair is long and it did not even cost half that. read more

I would give her MINUS 5 stars if I could! OMG, worst experience ever. First of all, she runs her salon in a back room in her house. I did not know this until I called her while driving because I could not find her location. The GPS led me to a residential area which I did not expect, so I was like this must be wrong! Then through the phone, she told me it is in her house so it was the right place. I found this location on Yelp. Because I have wavy, hard-to-tame asian hair, so after reading the reviews from mostly asian females, I decided to give her a try. I had an old ombre that have grown half-way out when I went in. I wanted to cut off most of the yellow hair but keep a little at the tip. So it will be all black at the top with yellow at the very bottom. But my yellow hair was turning an orange tone so I wanted to dye the ends more yellow. I was aiming for that edgy look. I told her my idea and she suggested to dye it a little more higher than just the remaining yellow hair so that it will not have such a drastic border between the black and yellow hair. I agreed to it. I thought she should know what she's doing...RIGHT? OH GOD, i was so wrong. She first wanted to bleach my hair, but I said no bleaching because my hair was already pretty damaged. So she said she will try to dye it straight up. The result? OMG...black hair...brown hair, and yellow hair...it was three distinct layers...There was no blending...no nothing, just distinct layers. I told her this is not okay. She said she will try again and dye it a little more at the borders to blend them. After sitting there for a whole 3 hours, my hair became the butt of a bumble bee, three distinct layers with straight borders in between, no blending! I wanted to scream! Throughout the whole process, she kept on answering phones because people wanted to come to do their hair... At the end, I was definitely not satisfied with the result, but her next customer came in and she said she cannot do anything for me that day, but asked me to come back some other day to finish...SERIOUSLY? WTF? She quoted me 130 over the phone for the whole thing. She still asked for 130 at the end when everything did not turned out the way I wanted. I said, " I did not even need bleaching, why still 130?" and you know what she said? Oh yeah, of course I did bleaching, I did bleaching the second time. I was like BS! I saw you use the same coloring cream! She said if I paid her 130, I can come back the next time for free to fix my hair? What in the world? I still had to pay to come back for you to fix what you messed up in the first place? This was getting ridiculous! I just wanted to get out of there. I paid 100 for this crappy job that messed up my hair. I had to eventually dye everything black by my self just to cover up this mess. It was terrible!!! Mary's services extends to custom color dying, highlights, and twist perms, and also hair treatments. I just got my first haircut from her today and it was quick, even with the very thorough shampoo and condition process. Now, my hair is even softer than before! I can't stop touching it. My brother gets the Japanese Straight perms. It's a long process, but the big screen T.V in the quiet salon makes the time go by faster. Now his hair is always straight. You don't need to ever use the straight iron every morning after that. It lasts for a long time. All in all, if you want to get what you pay for, come get your hair done here. You won't regret it! I went in here to get a Japanese straightening retouch. I was impressed by how thorough Mary was. She did a really nice job, my hair is very straight now, and it was a bit cheaper than a public salon. I went in to try out Japanese Thermal Reconditioning. Mary is super, super nice and very accommodating. I wound up getting my hair straightened, trimmed, the sides shaved, red dye added to a few streaks, and I picked up the pricey Japanese shampoo and conditioner for straightened hair all for way less than most places charge for the reconditioning alone. Needless to say, it was one hell of a deal. My hair looks superb, and the entire process was painless, comfortable, and honestly pretty fun. Mary is quite sociable and you'll find her pleasant to talk to. I was very impressed with my experience at her in-house salon. I should also note that the chickens on her property are cute and surprisingly sociable. They walked me to my car on the way out. Seriously. WOW. I think I found my new hairstylist! I called Mary around 3pm today and asked her if she had any openings today and she told me to come in at 5! YAY. Her place was a bit hard to find because it's not a building but a house. I got there and apparently I was supposed to go behind her garage where her salon is located. I got a haircut from her and I absolutely LOVE it. When she first started cutting my hair, I was a bit worried because it seemed like she was cutting a lot off. But she really does listen to what you want and also gives you input! Anyways, she took her time and was VERY detailed. She cut my hair after the wash, blow dried my hair, then cut it again... My husband and I have been going to Mary's salon for about 5 years. She does a good job on both of our hair every time! Mary is very nice, thorough, patient and very good at doing Asian's hair. I have done countless trimming, coloring, Japenese Straightening, and a few color touch-ups as well. One time I had a really bad experience at 7 salon, (where they just blow dry and straighten your hair like crazy and your hair looks fantastic for the moment, and once you wash it looks like crap), the next week my husband was getting a haircut, Mary saw my hair and offered to do some touch up for free. After her touch up, I finally don't have to spend 20 min on my hair every morning. I even hired her as the hair stylist for my wedding! She offers very reasonable price in everything. My friend recommended me Mary Salon, and made an appointment for me. This salon is actually in a residential house and has no sign at the entrance. So, it's pretty hard to find if you haven't been there before. You will need a GPS or Google map to find the house, especially at night. Mary is an amazing person, she took her time to listen to my demands, and understood exactly what I wanted. She definitely demonstrated her skills when cutting my hair. The result was beyond my expectation. The price is reasonable, it cost me $25 for hair cut. It may cost more if you want some extra services, but the price range is supposed to be less expensive than other hair salons in comparison. (notes: she only accept cash and check, cash is preferred) I will surely come back for another hair cut in approximately a month, and I will recommend Mary Salon to anyone who is looking for a satisfying hair cut with reasonable price. read more
