After my disaster at CJ's, I didn't want to go back, even though one of the stylists who did not ruin my hair does a really good haircut for my daughter. But I wanted to try somewhere new. Enter Hairbar. I chose this place for my 9 year old to get her haircut for her first day of school. She has wavy/somewhat curly hair and she wanted it straightened, along with a trim. The stylist took her back, shampooed and then brought her to the chair. She straightened it first, and then cut it with her standing up. My daughter was cringing the whole time she was getting the blow dry, and finally said the dryer was hurting/burning her scalp. The stylist commented that she burns her own daughter all the time, which really wasn't all that comforting. I could tell my daughter was uncomfortable with the straightener because she was so fearful of being burned. She's never acted like that before at any salon. I just held my breath, and thankfully that part went okay. When she finished the back of her hair, I could tell that her haircut was visibly crooked. I asked her to fix it, which of course meant taking off more length and then she kind of haphazardly cut the sides in a tapered look, but not even on both sides at all. She could tell, I guess, and then just kept snipping away at the sides. For $35, I felt that's a bit steep for a child under ten's haircut. They did have a 10% off offer on Yelp, but she denied it, saying they don't accept it. Well, someone should take it off the Yelp check-in page then. The other part I didn't like is that she literally stared at me the whole time I was paying, as in watching to see how much tip I was going to give. I gave the standard 20%, but felt uncomfortable being observed like that while trying to pay. Nice staff, but I can't say I'd come here again. The next day, I was speaking with one of my colleagues and she said she had been there once, and that she didn't like the haircut or style afterwards and never went back. Guess it's back to the drawing board.

Upon arrival, I was directed to a private area separate from the main salon. Robes were provided and they had lockers for you to put away your personal items. After that, you're led to the service area that has multiple stations with curtain separating each. I was concerned about noise and privacy but it actually felt very private and quiet with light music. I decided to try the Ultimate which is 90 minutes. My service was relaxing but I wished there was more scalp massage and less focus on a face massage. They started out focusing on your face, shoulders and some neck but I was there for the scalp massage so I just wanted more of that. Hair drying is also not part of the service but I rather air dry usually so not an issue for me. Plus my hair also felt amazing for days afterwards thanks to the extra conditioning treatments. Overall, I had an enjoyable experience and looking forward to my next one!

She is fun to talk to and so detail oriented, and it truly shows in the care she placed in her work. The final result (extra time full highlights + a single process color ends refresh) was fantastic. However, please be aware of the time and pricing transparency... I was originally quoted $330 during my consultation, but my final total at the desk was $435. I wasn't made aware at any time that this cost was changing or anything was being added on. I noticed on the end receipt that Olaplex was added in as $50. While I appreciate the care for my hair health, I wasn't consulted about this add-on or extra cost beforehand. Because I didn't have the initial consultation quote in writing from the salon, I didn't feel I could easily dispute the overall cost, and the services were already done as well... but it was a quite shock to be $100+ over the expected price for what I had budgeted. After tip and the credit card fee, the total came to almost $200 more than the initial quotation. Additionally, the service took six hours (2:30 PM to 8:30 PM). I wasn't made aware the time commitment needed and mentally estimated 4/4.5 hours at most for highlights and ends refresh from how my hair appointments typically go (7/8 hours for a full head double process). Melanie was incredibly dedicated; she even stayed past closing to ensure my hair was perfectly blow-dried and didn't rush the process. I just wish the booking came with a time estimate, so I could have planned my evening accordingly since I had dinner plans with friends that I couldn't make on time. I highly recommend Melanie's talent and ability, but I'd suggest confirming the price and duration in writing from consultation and again before starting the actual process.
