I have mixed feelings about my experience; the work itself was stellar. Melanie was delightful, and she worked magic with my hair. She is fun to talk to and so detail oriented, and it truly shows in the care she placed in her work. The final result (extra time full highlights + a single process color ends refresh) was fantastic. However, please be aware of the time and pricing transparency... I was originally quoted $330 during my consultation, but my final total at the desk was $435. I wasn't made aware at any time that this cost was changing or anything was being added on. I noticed on the end receipt that Olaplex was added in as $50. While I appreciate the care for my hair health, I wasn't consulted about this add-on or extra cost beforehand. Because I didn't have the initial consultation quote in writing from the salon, I didn't feel I could easily dispute the overall cost, and the services were already done as well... but it was a quite shock to be $100+ over the expected price for what I had budgeted. After tip and the credit card fee, the total came to almost $200 more than the initial quotation. Additionally, the service took six hours (2:30 PM to 8:30 PM). I wasn't made aware the time commitment needed and mentally estimated 4/4.5 hours at most for highlights and ends refresh from how my hair appointments typically go (7/8 hours for a full head double process). Melanie was incredibly dedicated; she even stayed past closing to ensure my hair was perfectly blow-dried and didn't rush the process. I just wish the booking came with a time estimate, so I could have planned my evening accordingly since I had dinner plans with friends that I couldn't make on time. I highly recommend Melanie's talent and ability, but I'd suggest confirming the price and duration in writing from consultation and again before starting the actual process. read more

I've been going to Van Michael for almost 20 years. I love love my stylist Robin (Peachtree Corners). What I don't love is being nickel-and-dimed. Van Michael recently increased prices. Ok, I absorbed that as I understand that prices everywhere are rising. However, why am I now paying the credit card processing fee of 3%? And why is that not clearly explained but instead indicated in a very confusing sign about cost of production? What is going on at Van Michael? Are the profit margins that thin? In the end, this will only hurt the stylists as if customers haven't already left due to the price increase, they will now receive less tip. read more

I've been going to the Van Michael salon system for YEARS. When I moved OTP, I moved from the Buckhead location to the Forum location, which is not close (45 minutes away from my home), but since I've always had good cuts/colors, I was willing to continue to make the drive. One month ago, I had a last-minute work obligation that prevented me from being able to go to my appointment that I had pre-booked back in November. This location's scheduling is so illogical that I could not get rebooked with both my colorist and stylist in the same day within a reasonable timeframe (i.e., they were quoting that I would have to wait 1.5 to 2 months out for the next available appointment that would allow me to see both my colorist and stylist at the same time). I finally acquiesced and agreed to split my cut and color into TWO separate appointments on TWO different days, which as a working mom of two kids who lives 45 minutes away (but who is willing to make the sacrificial drive because her stylists are great) is a tough ask. But I was willing to do it just this once and then try to get back on schedule for my next appointment. I braved Atlanta rush hour traffic to get my hair cut a few weeks ago. Then this last Friday evening, I was supposed to have my color. Again, I drove in rush hour traffic to get there only to find out Melanie was sick and my appointment was canceled but I was not made aware until I arrived. (I do not blame Melanie at all for this; people get sick and that is life). My question was why, when it's important to Van Michael Salon to make sure that I'm being respectful of THEIR time and that I show up to an appointment, they call me, text me, and email me, (and will bill me full price if I don't follow their cancelation policy) but when it's MY time that's being impacted, they only call and leave one voicemail, and assume that I get that message? The most asinine part was that they've recently changed their cancelation policy, so the customer service rep looks me in the eye and says, "Don't worry, we won't charge for this appointment." I was dumbfounded and didn't know how to respond. It made no sense and obviously added insult to injury. I ask for a reschedule for as soon as possible with Melanie. They tell me that the earliest Melanie can be rescheduled for is late March, early April. Again, I acquiesce and agree to see someone new who could get me in today, right when they open up. Is it a convenient option? Absolutely not. I have to get up extra early to get my kids out of the house on time, rearrange my work schedule, and drive in rush hour morning traffic to get there by 8am. But again, I flex and assume it's just once and after today, I will get back on schedule. Except today I arrive at my 8am scheduled appointment and the new colorist tells me that the process I want (lowlights) takes her two hours to do and the person who booked my appointment only booked an hour and a half. I was very clear with what I wanted when I arrived to my non-appointment on Friday and asked to have it rescheduled for today. I was livid. It was now 3 hours I had dedicated to driving to and from this location in the past week and still did not have my hair colored. I told them time is my most valuable resource these days and if they can't respect that and if there was nobody else on staff that could help me, it might be time for us to part ways. They didn't care. No manager called today to check on me to get my feedback. I've been loyal for a long time. Never ever had a problem until this recent situation. I'm sad for Victoria and Melanie because they are both great at what they do. If this keeps up, they will need to re-build their entire client lists - not because THEY are upsetting clients but because their incompetent, disrespectful support staff are. It's a shame. I'm in the market for a new stylist? Any recommendations out there?! read more

I am a regular at the salon and had made an appt a month before and when I walked in they said they had double booked! I even had received a text to confirm my appointment the day before. I had made my plans for the day based on this appointment and no phone call in advance to warn me that they had double booked. I'm very disappointed and will not return. read more

This company is not about customer service but only about money. They hire new talents that are inexperienced to practice on your hair (or at least the one that did my hair a few years ago) and when they mess up, you have to come back and pay to get it fixed. They do not own up to their mistakes or standards of a professional salon. read more

I was referred to a color specialist and had a good consultation with her for coloring, and she suggested I use another stylist to cut my hair. I took her a picture of what I wanted and she showed me a picture of the opposite, one of Jennifer Anniston and she said my hair would flip back although Jennifer's picture was all framed toward the face. I made another appointment to correct this mix up. The stylist seemed in a hurry and she didnt even act like she knew how to cut the layers to the side of my face. I awkwardly advised cutting and asked to use a curling iron to see if it looked better. She hurriedly gave me a cold curling iron and I left there with both sides of my hair a mess. I really wanted to see the color specialist for color, but cancelled after the bad experience with the stylist, wondering if she was good after having a disaster with the stylist. No Stars. Zero. I would give negative stars if I could. I've had not one but two awful experiences with this salon chain, and I've only been there a handful of times. Both situations involved senior colorists at two different locations. My first appointment, with Alex in Buckhead, was a disaster when I turned around in the chair to find orange highlights! When I didn't want to leave with orange hair and asked to get it fixed with a toner, I was met with attitude and was treated like it was my fault because of my base color. Come to find out, he used a 15 vol. developer, which, before-hand, I told him was not going to be enough. I was extremally unhappy with the results, but somehow it was my fault?? OR....he could have just admitted that the 15 vol. developer wasn't strong enough...as I suggested. A year later, I decided to give Van Michael another chance at a different location, The Forum, with Kerri. All was well until I had an issue with a root touch up. I walked away looking like I hadn't done anything at all to my roots. In fact, they looked worse than when I walked in. I was so disappointed, and when I called to get it fixed, I was made to feel like it was my fault that Kerri didn't do a base color or low-lights, even though I had recommended BOTH before-hand. I told Kerri that I wanted to eventually move away from doing a base color so that I could only do highlights, which would start to incorporate my grey hair. However, I told her that I didn't think that it was something we could do in this appointment, and that it would need to be a gradual process by using lighter and lighter base colors and low-lights. It was Kerri, the PROFESSIONAL, who told me that I didn't need to do either. Well, she was wrong, and I came out with white roots that didn't even come close to matching the rest of my hair. My root grow out looked worse than when I walked in. Instead of admitting that it was a mistake to not do a base, Kerri made it seem like it was MY fault....again! What is it about this company and their culture that their stylists/colorists are never wrong, never make a mistake, and the customer is the one who is in the wrong? I guess the lack of customer service and humility runs deep in their culture, because I was met with the same mentality with their corporate office. If you're looking for complacent colorists, with an ego, who get away with charging way too much for doing basic work, then this is the place for you. read more

Victoria did a great job on my wash and blowout before my niece's wedding. She is sweet, talkative and attentive! She even included a relaxing neck massage. It's nice and convenient, too, to have a Sunday option for hair appointments. All of the staff are very friendly in this Aveda salon. They carry a large selection of Aveda products, makeup, etc., also. The booking process was a cinch, just give em a call! I loved the phone call reminder the day before, or maybe it was two days before. I also received text reminders and I believe a text confirmation. The colorists and stylists at this salon are highly qualified, unfortunately I'll have to take my business elsewhere. I moved to a different part of GA but still make an effort to schedule appointments here. I scheduled an 8 am Monday appointment about a month in advance and this was the only slot they had available. At 7:50 Monday morning, after taking off work for the day and driving in an hours worth of traffic to get to the salon, I'm told my appointment was cancelled because my colorist was sick. I get it, things happen, but there was no effort to schedule me with someone else and better yet, no way to compensate for my time and lost day of work. Either book me with someone else that morning or give me a credit for when I come back. And if you're a colorist and feel you're getting sick, try and give someone more than ten minutes notice. Won't be coming back due to horrific customer service. read more

Booked a haircut here for the first time in a long time. It had been a while, and when I entered no one explained how anything worked I just was told to wait for my stylist. I saw people changing into the client robes/gowns but I was never offered to do that so I was unsure. Haircut was overall ok, a bit expensive for just a cut but I think it depends on who you book with. However, I was happy I could have a last minute appointment booked the day before because I had a last minute opening in my schedule. read more

What I look for in a salon, I've found at Van Michael and my first ever go-to stylist Victoria! (Seriously, I've never cared to go to the same stylist more than once, and I've never traveled over half an hour to reach her, but that's exactly what happened today.) Van Michael is a swanky, clean, modern salon with complimentary makeup touches after your visit (which I didn't experience), a zen shampoo room for those getting haircuts and such, and room for maybe 20 stylists or so. I've tried the Aveda tea that's sold with the other Aveda products, but that's pretty much all I can speak to. Everyone there was friendly enough, but the main attraction for me was Victoria. I met Victoria when she was going through extra training and needed models to rehearse different techniques on for her training requirements. She gave me long layers and helped me figure out what to do with my growing bangs, and at that time, she was asking questions of her mentor about how to best work with my hair. I really appreciated her commitment to excellence and I was so happy with the finished product that I decided to meet her again for today's haircut. Victoria is very friendly, warm, engaging, and down to earth. I have a feeling she'd be totally cool with you if you'd rather have a quieter visit, but we had a great time chatting. She works the salon atmosphere and let me totally relax during a brief shoulder massage while we were discussing what I wanted done to my hair and during the shampoo time (my favorite). She's always ready to answer my questions about anything, and she often asked for feedback on what she was doing. "So you want this just cleaned up in the back? Okay, I'm evening this out. What are you thinking about this? Play with this for a moment, is the length okay?" I completely trust her with my hair, but I also really appreciate how she puts the control back in my hands like that. I thought that since Victoria's completed that extra training that her rates would be upwards of $50, but my cut was much lower than I expected! I was thrilled and happily gave a good tip. The cut Victoria gave me and the luxurious time at the salon is definitely worth it. So glad to have found MY stylist! read more

They also manage to never have any availability open in person, but on the app there is a lot of availability. Not sure if they're lazy and don't want clients at this point, but I am definitely making sure all of my friends in this local area know how they treat their customers with DISRESPECT and lies. Dararith is a superb hair stylist and an incredible human being. Jimmy is a wonderful greeter that always makes you feel welcome, important, and well taken care of. Van Michael Salon in Peachtree Corners at The Forum is a happy place to come, and you leave looking great. I have been taking my son there for nine years and he is treated like the prince that he thinks he is. :-) Not many places are as welcoming to people with disabilities as is VM at The Forum. Everyone says hello to him when he is there. I am so grateful for Dararith who talks to my son and treats him like a human being all the while being careful with the scissors and holding his head when necessary. (My son does not always understand or is able to keep his head still.) Unfortunately, I made the mistake of trying this Duluth area salon for a basic trim... and I am not exaggerating when when I say it was the worst haircut I've had in my entire life. I NEVER leave reviews, but felt the need to warn others. Unless you want to pay for a haircut here and then another haircut somewhere else to fix the hack job they gave you, I recommend skipping this Van Michael location. read more

I am changing my review from my past experience. New Review I've been a customer since '09 or '10, and until recently, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this company and their customer service. This weekend I went in for a touch up on my roots and a new ombre color, and the client coordinator did't allot enough time for my appointment. My colorist, who I love, felt awful and sincerely apologized. She was already over my appointment by 30 minutes and she just finished washing my hair. After paying $210 for an uncompleted service, I left the building with wet and un-styled hair. I think the worst part was, I was explaining my frustration to the client coordinator and she made it seem like it was my fault for not knowing how much time needed. I asked for a manager to call to discuss this further, and I'll be surprised if I receive one. If I wanted to color, dry and style my own hair, I could spend a lot less money doing so. Sadly, I won't be returning. For spending $210 (with tip), I expected this to be handled in a better way. Previous Review The. Best. Hair. Salon. Hands down. I've been to many of their locations and they all have top notch customer service. They keep notes on each cut and color so if you like a previous style they can reference their notes. I decided to give this place a try after my beloved stylist of 4 years relocated to another state. I had my reservations because I've visited their Buckhead salon with a friend once and the service I received was just so-so. I called to make an appointment, since I was a new client, I was asked to provide my credit card information, and was asked to cancel my appointment before 24 hours if I cannot make it. Pretty standard. I asked for a senior stylist, which costs $58+ for a haircut. The staff at this Van Michael salon is very different from the Buckhead location. Everyone was very friendly and courteous. I was offered a bottle of water right away. My stylist - Julie (who is fantastic btw, I booked my next cut already), was very nice and asked me what I wanted and gave me a nice neck massage before we started. I'm very happy with my haircut and the service I received both from my stylist and the staff at the salon. When you have a good stylist, you just know it. This will be my new home for cuts from now on. Not review related, but I wanted to address a few things I saw in others reviews - I don't mean to be rude and I certainly understand how annoying it is to be on hold for a long period of time, but this is a hair salon, if I'm on hold for more than 10 minutes I will definitely be hanging up, calling again or try them again later, I would not stay on the line for over an hour just to book an appointment. As for the credit card information issue. I can almost guarantee that most half decent hair salon/spas will ask for this if you are a new client. I feel this is fine because they do not charge your card as long as you show up for your appointment, or cancel within their asked time frame, which again, is very fair. I don't think it's difficult to cancel an appointment within the appropriate time frame if you cannot make it. read more

Where do you get your hair cut? That's the question you ask of a friend with the great haircut when you move to a new city. My friend's reply sent me to Van Michael, an upscale salon in the Buckhead (with locations elsewhere.) Since I've had the same stylist for 3 years and consider chair-hopping a crime, I was nervous to get a cut from a new stylist, but my experience at Van Michael put me at ease. After pleasantries with the receptionist (coffee and other beverages are offered) and tour of the immense salon (high ceilings, studio lighting, areas separated by service provided, and the "Tower," a flight-fancy booth where all appointments are booked that overlooks the dryer section), I was handed a "book." It featured clippings of models and celebrity hairstyles and eerily reminded me of middle school slumber party projects. This was apparently my stylist Georgia's book and it would come in handy later. Georgia greeted me in the reception area and led me to a changing room to prepare for the cut. She was warm and took the edge off. After seating me at her station, we discussed her thoughts on the mop that I had been growing out since May. She gave me some options to keep the length and then pulled out the "book" to illustrate what she would be doing to my hair. She was thorough. After a scalp massage and hair wash, she went to work on me. Half an hour later, I emerged with a cut I could more easily grow out, was easy to manage, and was stylish. Georgia showed me how to best style it over the next 12 weeks, then sent me on my way. Some interesting tidbits: In between cuts, Van Michael offers complimentary bang trims. All you have to do in drop in. No appointment is necessary. Junior stylists are less expensive to book. I paid $60 including a tip. More senior stylists I'm told charge upwards $100 for a cut/style. Hungry before or after your visit? Or need to get some grocery shopping out of the way? Wholefoods is right next door. I scheduled my next appointment in the afternoon, so I can kill two birds with one stone. read more

Van Michael at The Forum on Peachtree Parkway is FABULOUS! I've been going here for nearly 5 years now and was lucky enough to be placed with a wonderful colorist (Keri) and stylist (Darrarith) on my first visit. I have never deviated from these 2 people, as they are just fantastic, a lot of fun, not uppity or pretentious, and always listen to me and work with my needs/wants. (And yes, they've even told me 'no' sometimes when I've wanted something that just wouldn't work on me.) I've left with fabulous hair every single time. Never a bad cut, never a funky color that I didn't ask for (green, orange, or some other shade not found in nature that wasn't supposed to happen). Even the booking and check-out assistants are fabulous and will book your appointments in advance if you want them to - they always work with me! Also, I am never pushed into buying more products or anything I don't want. They will ask if you need anything, but if not, hey, that's ok too! Love that! This place is cool, fun, has above average skill level in pretty much every employee I've observed, and does fantastic hair without any pushy tactics or hard sells. I have been customer of Van Michael for many years now. Until very recently, I've usually had great results with the cuts I've received. But because my usual stylist was booked solid & wasn't available for weeks I scheduled instead with Hunter whom I've never used before. I will never use again either!! This is the most awful, disappointing hair cut I've ever had. I had let it grow out (had to get past that awkward grow out stage) which took 8 months, so I was ready for a cut. Good God I so regret booking with Hunter. She gave me layers that make absolutely no sense. It is choppy & I swear to God, very difficult to style! I expected more from this Salon. Be warned! Do not let Hunter cut your hair. You will regret it. Thank God it grows back because I'd hate to be stuck like this forever. read more
