It was a rainy day so I thought I needed to leave early from home so I can be on time. I was at least 15 minutes earlier than the said appointment, Jay was helping the other client but he was very polite to have me sitting down at the waiting area. 5 minutes later I was called for the hair cut. He asked what style I would like and I showed some pictures I saved on my phone and he was getting right into it. Even though we didn't communicate too much, Jay was very concentrated at getting at the style I like. Less than an hour, dah dah, a fresh new look. Thank you, Jay! SO... When I tried out this salon earlier in the year, I was quite impressed with the stylist' technical ability. He was super-quick, and just very good. HOWEVER...here's the problem. The main stylist (forget his name) does not or WILL not speak English. When I was there for my haircut, he did not even say "Hi" (LOL!)...not a single word! I'm not a super-chatty person, and don't mind quiet stylists...but at least a greeting would have been nice. WOW...So rude! Going even further, this salon will not accept phone calls from non-English speaking clients. Tad ridiculous...given this is United States (not Korea), right?? I mean I'm Korean (English-speaking one, that is lol!)...but I find this quite rude. So rude that I basically deleted a former 5-star review...and canceled an appointment to hop to another one that does accept phone calls from non-Korean speaking clients!! Seriously, if you are practicing a business in America (even if it's at Koreatown!), you need to be willing to speak English with your customers...and accept phone calls from non-Koreans and non-English speaking Koreans. It's called proper etiquette! So basically, I deleted this 5-star review (thinking back, I'm like WHY did I rate them so highly? Very good haircut, but SO RUDE!!!)...and now I'm giving them 2 stars (would have EASILY been 1 star, except again, I DID get a very good haircut at a cheap price). I've always loved getting layered haircuts as a kid, but the older I got the more my hair was becoming a weird mixture of straight/wavy/curly-ness & it got harder to maintain. I got into a love/hate relationship with my hair. This year I decided to try a new hair salon and after 5 years of getting it done myself in my bathroom with school scissors, I finally have the haircut I've wanted to achieve! I was really anxious of having a haircut again after having an awful experience at another place. I got ugly choppy uneven layers and my hair was a mess. I took my time and I choose to visit this salon. Omg I can begin to tell you how awesome experience I had. Booking my appointment was really easy despite me not speaking Korean at all and just a bit of English. I came a couple of minutes earlier and my appointment started right on time. My hair wash was super relaxing, their products smell amazing and didn't feel harsh on my scalp and hair. I was hesitating on which style to choose cause I didn't want to sacrifice my hair length but my hair was in an awful state. The owner and the other hairstylist assessed my hair and gave me options to fix my hair without completely compromising my length. After I decided, the owner started to cut my hair. He's quiet and focused but polite. He was really efficient and you can totally tell his experience and technique. The styling was also amazing, he didn't pull my hair at all or unnecessarily burned it, which I appreciate cause I have thin and fragile hair. I don't speak Korean at all and I can communicate in English but it's not my first language. I don't feel there was any issues in understand each other. I never felt unwelcome or uncomfortable despite being the only one that couldn't speak Korean. Ive never gotten a perm done before, so I made a request on yelp and they responded within 10 minutes. The workers there were very friendly and they did a great job with the perm for only $85. Considering most places charge over $120 its a great deal. My only complaint is that I was waiting a long time while in the chair for them to start but they were nice and apologized for it. read more

I've heard good reviews, but the service was quite disappointing. The hairstylists crew were polite, but due to short staff, they did not take good care of the customers. I came around 3:20 for the appointment. I've showed the perm style I want and had short moment of discussion (I have mid length hair). Jay looked at glance and warned me that my hair will be damaged, but we proceeded with agreement. It took me nearly 4 hrs for completion and out of 4 hrs, I was waiting for good 1-2 hrs sitting idle waiting for his hair assistant to take care of. Result was random C-Curl all at the bottom of my hair - I look like an octopus now HAHA Most of perm already got loose after assistant dried my hair. Jay was still busy with other customers - gave glance at my hair saying everything looks good. Lol If they are this short staffed and unable to give good care of customers, they should either hire more staff, or do not accept additional appt. I'm telling yall, my hair was NOT WORTH $300. Based on the other reviews, I'm sure this is a great hair salon however my personal experience went poorly. I showed up at 1:00 for my 1:15 appointment but I wasn't actually sat down until about 1:45. One thing I noticed was that Jay (the owner) was actually working on multiple people at a time, which I can understand since it seems he is very experienced, but it bothered me that he would leave my chair multiple times to work on other people. I ended being at this salon for about 4.5 hours for a hair cut and highlights. He also cut my hair much shorter than I asked for and I was overall not happy with how it turned out. Love this place! Jay spent 4 hours to make my hair look exactly the way I wanted( that's with hair dying, highlights, and haircut). I showed him some photos that I'd like my hair to be done, his English isn't as good but he had his assistants explaining details works with me to achieve the look. He was very patient and nice. He's also very talented. If you are ever there, you will know what I am talking about. The way he cuts hair will blow you away. Hubby goes where he goes, through several hair salons and we're so happy that he finally had the chance to open his own. He always does a great job for hubby, especially since hubby claims his hair is hard to style and make it look good. I am not the type to stick to one hair stylist, but I myself had some work done with Mr. Jay, from trims to highlights to color. He always makes it look fantastic and I never had a problem with the work he had done for me. He is a very versatile hair stylist and is talented in styling both men and women. The salon itself is located in a shopping plaza, with ample of parking. When I walked in, I was greeted and immediately seated in a salon chair. The stylist, Jay, asked what I wanted (a trim) and how many inches I wanted to cut off. Prior to haircut, he washed and shampooed my hair. After Jay cut my hair, he blow dried and styled my hair with loose curls. Overall, I would recommend Kara Hair. The salon is clean and beautiful, and my stylist was attentive and friendly. Not once did I feel like he was rushing my appointment. Pricing is fair, and I can honestly say I think this is the best haircut I've ever gotten! I wish I could give this a great rating like the other reviews, but this was not what I was expecting :/ I came in early and waited for a good amount of time til I was able to be taken. Once I was getting my hair washed, it was probably the most painful experience. It was my fault for wearing makeup, I get it, but I also felt like I was getting soaked all over my face. While I was getting the cut, I just felt a bunch of ripping of my hair.I was not spoken to the WHOLE time until it was all done. None of the questions hairstylists usually ask when they are doing hair. For example, a good hairdresser would ask if a certain length is okay. I was not asked anything. It was not bad until I came home and realized I look like I have half of my density gone :( lastly, while getting to the bangs part, It was PERFECT right until another lady came in to trim it EVEN MORE. I came here for the first time and was very impressed. The salon is cute, clean and is taking COVID precautions very seriously. We were not introduced but I believe Jay, the owner, is the gentleman who cut my hair. I showed him a picture of what I wanted, he glanced at it and was able to recreate exactly what I wanted. He also let me know if and when I should color my hair; I appreciate when a stylist gives their honest opinion and let's me know if what I want is doable or good for my hair, rather than just giving me what I want even if it won't look good or be healthy for my hair in the long run. This was my first time getting a haircut at Kara and I only had good expectations since all the reviews left on Yelp were positive. So, let me explain the 3 stars I am leaving. Don't get me wrong, Jay and his assistant were super nice and friendly, but I was left frustrated in my seat for almost two hours for a women's haircut. If that two hours was used to perfect my hair, then I would be perfectly fine with it, but after they washed my hair, I was waiting with damp hair for more than half an hour before they started actually cutting my hair. I assume that he is the only stylist and the rest are assistants, which I understand. BUT, please don't overbook and just expect customers to wait that long -- I am honestly still surprised no one else mentioned this. The cut itself felt rushed even though he seemed to know what he was doing. The haircut was alright, but it was a little shorter than what I asked for.
