Called a Saturday morning asking if they take walk ins. She scheduled us same day in the afternoon. When we arrived, I'm mildly surprised to find that everyone (stylist, owner, and clientele) are Korean. I was concerned at first due to language barriers, but braved it out anyways. I showed her a picture I found on internet and showed it to her. She too a quick glanced and nodded. She took my son for a quick hair wash and the get working. She's very detailed oriented. I used to go to expensive hair salons to get my hair cut. I'm sure you guys can tell when you meet me. Anyway, I hated going to the barbers because they only asked, "which guard number?" If I wanted to use a clipper and some guards, I can do it myself. Now the best haircut I got was from this Ukrainian chick who also did hair for runway models. She's disappeared, so I need to find someone adequate. These guys at Unga do the job fine. They are a step below her, but I think they're just as good as the ones in expensive, American salons--at least for men's haircuts. The best part is that they're cheap. You don't need Scoutmob to feel like you can afford this. For $18, you can't get a better Men's haircut anywhere for that price. No, not even Great Clips. They speak English well. So you don't have to worry about not being able to speak Korean. Plus, I bring my whitey, white wife here, and I saw some non-Koreans coming here too. They even treated me, an American Korean, well. They didn't look too disgusted to cut a hair of a Korean who betrayed their country by not speaking Korean to them. read more

Excellent haircuts, especially for fine Asian hairs. Very hip. I asked for a trim and got more than just a trim. I got my hair styled too. I love it. J and BJ are my favorite stylists here. $25 to cut long hair. Definitely worth the drive. I would also recommend Asian men to get their hair cut at Unga if they want sexy hair like Wang Lee Hom. Haha. The other Unga location (on Buford Hwy) is closed. This is the brand new location, and it's a huge upgrade in terms of the decor and hair product fragrance. This review is for Lia. I am Korean and we often perm our hair. About four months ago, I got this thing called steam perm from Pika Pika(I will post a review later). Naturally, my curls started to start falling flat and getting frizzy after several months. It had been at least five years since I got Japanese thermal straightening done(aka magic perm) so I started searching high and low. I had to do thorough research because when done completely wrong, magic perm can leave your hair dry, burnt/melted, and it will start to break off. After calling EVERY SINGLE Korean salon, I settled with Unga because it was close to what I was willing to spend and I've heard wonderful things in the past by close friends. The entire process took about 3+ hours. Lia took care of me and made sure all the chemical process only lasted the correct time so it wouldn't damage my hair as much. That was very important to me because often times, the stylist can get a bit lazy. I went in on Tuesday evening yet they were busy at all times. This salon is totally worth your visit. They don't rip you off for the same services provide elsewhere. Magic perm can run you anywhere from $150-400 depending on your length. This place was highly efficient and timely. Even after all the chemical processing, Lia left my hair silky soft and I maintained my original texture! One thing that bothered me a good bit was that all the stylists didn't mind using their personal cell phones during service. They would text and have personal conversations while still doing your hair. That came off very unprofessional to me. Overall, my experience was great! I always love my hair cut. I recently cut A TON of my hair off and she did a great job styling it. A hair cut costs $30. The name of this place brings out the immature kid in me because it sounds like the Korean word for poop. Also, my hair dresser's name was BJ. But their service and skills were far from poopy, and BJ was a serious man. I'm very sloppy with my hair care, and BJ didn't give me any obviously judgmental looks or lecture. He didn't try to upsell the services. He also sensed that I'm not the small talk type of person and talked sparingly, mostly to answer my questions about how to make my round Asian face look smaller. I like. The hair cut turned out AWESOME. And it was only $25. I needed to get my roots retouched and my whole hair coated, so that was another $60. Not bad at all! Seriously, I was flipping my hair at work all day the next day and got so many compliments. And yes, they speak English very well, so do not fear. read more

Let me start off by saying that I really like my new haircut and Choi did an amazing job! She is so quick, skilled, and sweet. I can tell she is a really nice lady even though we had a big communication barrier. Now, I do have to go back and say I have no idea what happened the whole time! I called and made an appointment for Lena, who was recommended to me by two people. I showed up and told the older lady at the desk that I had a haircut appointment with Lena. So obviously, there is a bit of a communication barrier, but I was pretty sure they knew who I was requesting. I sit down and showed the stylist a picture of what I wanted. She was so organized and swift. The way she handled my hair made me feel confident in her skills. My hair did end up a lot shorter than I wanted and requested, but in the end I really do like it! It is the change I needed. Now, when I go to pay I pick up the card for Lena and ask if it is her card, and my stylist redirected me to her card (Choi). I was completely shocked because I had tried to confirm twice that it was Lena, but it was not the whole time!!! I am still a bit confused on how that all happened, but in the end I liked Choi and will totally go back to her! read more

After years of envying gorgeously, stylishly, fashionably haircuts of my Korean peers, I decided to end all the green dragon in me and get one for myself! Like the others, I just stepped in on a Sunday morning at 10 AM with no appointments and no plan, only armed with a cellphone full of pictures and eager determination to get rid of hair that hadn't been thinned out since the winter of 2012-2013. I balked a little at the price (when she said $30, I told her to repeat the number twice because I was in semi-disbelief), but I hit the hammer on the nail because I got the owner of the salon. I don't know her name, but she's a little elderly with shortish hair. I showed her a picture of a lovely Emma Stone haircut and she got straight down to business. She asked me what length I wanted and gave me her recommendations as to how long my bangs should be afterwards, etc. despite me not knowing a lick of Korean. Compared to past hairstylists, I could tell straightaway that she was most definitely very experienced. I asked her afterwards how long she'd been cutting hair and found out she's been cutting for 30 years! She was quick, but not hasty. I could tell by the way she handled my hair that she definitely knew what she was doing. When she washed and dried off my hair, she showed me tips as to how to bring out a more natural style of my freshly cut hair since I apparently had natural waves. Now, my hair feels incredibly light. I haven't had softer hair since. Though it's pricey, they're not pushy and my hairstylist was especially experienced! I simply love the style and I can say I won't be envying other Korean people for a while! haha read more

Pika Pika, Scissor Hands, Park Juns, etc... I have tried them all from Buford Highway to Duluth, and the winner goes to Unga. It took a while for me to find this "glass slipper" of a hair salon. As far as raw talent, these guys have the goods. Their scissorship cannot be matched. I could also see the passion they have for cutting hair, which is always reassuring. They cut men's hair very well; however, I cannot say anything about perms and the such because I haven't had any (yet). It helps that I speak Korean, but I have seen many non-Koreans get around just fine in this hair salon. Also ,they were timely when I went in for my appointment. Now, they didn't do anything over the top, but everything was just top-notch. The hair salon itself was very tidy and the music wasn't blasting; for once, it felt like I was at a hair salon and not in a club unlike when I'm in most of those other Korean hair salons. It used to be $18 for a cut but they raised it to $20. Still, the price is right! read more

This is the only place I go to for a "Magic Perm". Been coming to the same woman for 20 years. My hair is seriously thick and very long. When uncared for, my hair is naturally curly and frizzy. I have a Korean fro going on. This salon will treat my hair and use however much of the solution that is needed to straight out my hair. They always charge me a low price even after spending 5+ hours there. Their styling is not very competive, but if you want straight hair for an impossibe project....go to Unga. I did notice many people going to a male stylist looking specifically for him. I believe he would be the go-to person for a stylish cut. Look for the guy with the long hair...he has better hair than I do ;p read more

My first experience at Unga Hair Salon was great! I have only been there one time so far. The salon has casual decor nothing really fancy in my opinion, its a pretty big place. I was greeted by the staff as soon as I entered the building. This is an Asian operated salon.I only saw Korean people. The stylist that cut my hair was great and she had a great hair style as well so I know I was in good hands. She was very meticulous while cutting my hair. I got a shampoo as well. After reading most of the reviews I decided to finally cut my nearly waist length hair at Unga. I told the stylist that I wanted a two inch trim with long layers and side-swept bangs. What I ended up with was about 5 to 6 inches hacked off. I had seen her snip the ends of my hair but what I did not foresee was that in the process of cutting those layers she would cut off so much. My hair now is extremely thin and short. My bangs are now just a side fringe. She left me with advice to brush my fringe back for added volume. How did a request for side swept bangs turn into volumed fringe? I seriously just want to give this place one star. However, I came here with some family and they had amazing haircuts. If you're going to get your haircut here then request one of the men to cut it. read more

I had a manicure/wax done on my hair by a guy (I think his name is Jun or John?). He didn't really cover my roots, but overall it came out nice looking. The reason why I wanted him to get close to the roots is because the manicure I chose had a brown color mixture in it, and I wanted my hair color to look even throughout. In the end, it looked good. The only reason I gave them 3 stars, is because the service is not great. I felt like the workers there including jun/John were not friendly. I felt slightly uncomfortable. read more

They splashed the chemicals in her eyes! I can even tell that her hair is not even curled in the back. And then to top it off, they force you to tip!!! Trust me. This update is because I received another haircut from this salon and it was decidedly a less pleasing experience. The stylist I think made a very genuine attempt at giving me a good haircut. However her interpretation of the picture I showed her is far different from the actual photo. She is probably much better at cutting men's hair than women's short styles. It takes a certain eye to be able to cut short hair on a women and still make it look feminine. This haircut is much better suited for a man. So guys, feel free to ask for Choi Moon Ja. Perhaps longer hair styles this stylist could do, but NOT short hair for women. Her card says she's off on Tuesdays, so I will return then so it's not too awkward. Next time I will ask for Joanne or get one of the guys there to cut it because I hear they are better with women's hair. But this is the last time I will let just anyone cut my hair at this salon. In my younger days I would have seriously cried about this. But now that I am older I know it will grow out in relatively a short time...and I have cute hats. --UPDATE! It took 6 months before I needed another haircut. It was THAT short. I was trying to be more optimistic when I wrote the review. It's less traumatizing if you can try to make the best of bad situations. But now that I am finally on the other side of this haircut experience, I can now say it was awful. I gave the salon 2 stars only because I know other stylists there can do better, not because of what I got. My last from here deserves 0 stars. It was seriously the worst haircut. It was so short, people would give me a weird look the first COUPLE of months. It really says something when people say, "Wow! You really changed your hair" and then for me to say, "Yes, I got it cut about two months ago and they cut it way too short" and then they have a shocked look on their face. I was in desperate need of a haircut (3 months since my last one) and was in town so decided to give Unga a try. I wasn't sure if it would be crazy busy since I went on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, but I only waited about 20 minutes for a stylist to become available. Lia gave me a decent haircut that left my hair feeling a lot lighter, and she styled it well so I felt awesome when I left the salon. I'm having some trouble replicating that look (don't you hate it when that happens) and currently suffering from a bit of that I-just-got-my-hair-cut blunt look that makes styling necessary but I think in a few days I will learn my new do and be happy with my $30 haircut! read more
