The hunt for a decently priced barbershop in Atlanta is a difficult one. Back when I lived in Detroit, among all the high end salons that offer men's haircuts, women stylists aren't bad, but they don't know men's hair. I found a specialized men's haircut joint that was purely one of the best in the area so moving to Atlanta made the search of that equivalent value rather difficult. So I did jump from place to place over the years till I found Scissorhands. I've been told by friends in the industry that Asian hair is one of the most difficult to cut so to roll into a place that knows how to cut this style of hair was a relief. They take walk-ins but you'll be guaranteed if you make an appointment because this place is POPPIN'!!! I've been rocking what is known as the Two-Block cut lately but places I've been to haven't been able to perfect it properly until I found this place and they do an amazing job! But rest assured, they can do a slew of other styles from the modern pompadour, the undercut, the French fringe (a la Itaewon Class) and a host of others. They service kids all the way to the senior citizen making this place very multi-versatile in what cuts they do. And ladies!!! I never know who is washing my hair but the last time, they completely missed washing and scrubbing the back of my head so it was still really itchy afterwards. Jinju messed up my hair. It was so patchy, gray, and orange. She doesn't know how to color after trying to fix her 1st mistake. She was very rude and acted like she doesn't know to speak English. I have been a customer in Salon Scissors Hand since JinJu transferred from Pika Pika to Salon Scissor Hands, (and I had been a loyal customer of JinJu since 2015, I see her pretty much every three month, either for haircut or perm curls). I have to say that the price in Salon Scissor Hands has gone up a lot! I remember in 2015 where I my hair done in pika pika, with the touch up, straight on top the curls at bottom, the total price was covered by 300 dollars. In 2020 where I had the same things done in Salon Scissor Hands, I was charged separately for straight on top and curls at bottom, which means double perm price for one hairstyle, so I paid nearly 400 dollars for touch up, straight and curls, and I paid the tip separately in cash. Yesterday I went to Salon Scissor Hands the total price was 470 dollars for the same hairstyle I did in 2020. I was planing to give 30 dollars for tips since the price has gone up so much. I was handed over an electronic pad where I could choose the tips. For 470 dollars the minimum tip I could give was 94 dollars, unless I chose "no tip". I didn't want to be rude or bargain the price since everything has been finished already. So I still chose 20% tip which made my total hair salon cost 564 dollars. I think it is too pricey! My family has a decent household income, which is top 1-2% income in America. If this was too pricey for us to afford, not sure how many customers are there in the market could afford the price with no complaints. I'd like to work with Jinju regularly in the future but I hope the salon could charge a reasonable price, which will benefit everyone in future. Thanks. read more

I had an appointment for my 3 year old here at 2:30. He fell asleep in the car so we went in at 2:45. Only 15 mins late. After making us wait for 25 mins, they told us they couldn't give my toddler a haircut because we were late. We pleaded with them because we had driven 45 minutes to get there and they had ZERO flexibility. The service today was shockingly terrible. I scheduled a hair cut here for 1:30. When I was seated, the person that cut my hair started cutting it for a few minutes, and then stopped and went to the station next to me to cut someone else's hair. Why is this guy cutting 2 people's hair at one time? I would have rather waited longer to not have to divide time with another customer. To make things worse, it was a warm day, and sweat was running down my face while sitting in the uncomfortably hot room. After about 20 minutes, and a complaint to the front desk, he came back. Near the end of the cut, the person who washed my hair didn't bother to warm up the cold water. The guy then asked me if I wanted wax in my hair. I said no, and then he proceeded to apply wax. Oh my. Where do I even start. This salon has changed so much over the years - to the point where I had to report them to the county's health department. I made an appointment for a men's perm and cut. At my appointment time, they came and asked me if they could cut someone before me (didn't make sense). I reluctantly said yes, in an effort to be flexible. Finally when it was my turn, the shampoo girl tried to dry my hair with a WET USED TOWL from the previous person!!! I told her it was wet and she tried to justify with her broken English and keep wiping my head. I had to raise my voice before she stopped and went to the back and got a dry towel. Usually a men's perm and cut takes anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour. They kept taking haircut appointments to the point where I did not leave the salon until 3 HOURS LATER. Let me start by just saying this salon is hubby all time favorite salon. He been here for some years now but I never cared to come because I already have a stylist of my own. Since my last stylist messed up my sister hair, I was dying to find a new place. My hair grew out way more than I expected and my color grew half way down already. I came into Scissor hands today with the intention of having a hair cut and that was it. Laura was my stylist and let me just say... she's one of the best I've seen in my life. She gave me a hair wash and it reminded me of back home. She's a little rough but that's what I like. She spent at least 15 minutes on me and she even gave me a hot towel to support my neck and she cleaned my ears too. After we went to the chair she was apologetic due to her not able to communicate with me and needed a translator. I told the translator what I wanted but Laura suggested it would be better if I have my hair a little longer if I wanted layers. I was fine with it and let me just say; I thought I was having a $200 hair cut because she spent so much time and effort into doing my hair. She kept on saying sorry because she doesn't speak English, but the sister don't understand that I don't care if she speaks English or not; the results is all it matters. I've been to places where the stylist speaks English but my haircut was wack. I'm very particular with what I like and Laura did just that. I came in knowing exactly what I wanted and she did it without a picture. After Laura was done, she saw my eyebrows wasn't groomed well and asked if I would like her to groom them. I told hubby I think my haircut is $100 minimum! Nope, it was such a good price. After speaking to husband, he told me she cuts his hair last week too. Hubby normally go to scissor hand for Yuka but since she's no longer there; he's ok with Laura as well. I will call to make an appointment with Laura very soon for my hair coloring next. After reading the reviews, I went ahead and made an appointment with Tony. I was in desperate need of a trim for my thick, pin straight asian hair. The atmosphere was really trendy. Pop-y music was playing and flat screens with music videos were everywhere. I showed up a few minutes early and only had to wait a few minutes for Tony to finish up another client. He was very welcoming and attentive when I described what I want, more volume and layered while still keeping it mid-length. As he proceeded to cut, I got worried. More hair was getting sliced off than I wanted. When I voiced my concern, he assured me that getting rid of the thick underlayer would give my head of hair more volume. I trusted him so I just went along with it. When it was all over and done with, my hair looked semi-mullet like. Top was heavy and pretty shaggy looking, while some strands dangled around my shoulders. It just didn't look right. It wasn't voluminous and full...it looked dead and flat. Too late to do anything, so for the past few months I've been trying to nurse my hair to grow out. I'm a regular here, started coming here 2 years ago after a few recs from friends. If you're Asian like me, it's pretty hard to find a suitable hair salon. I've tried countless say American-run barber shops, but they can never get my hair right. The good thing about going to these Korean hair salons is that they're familiar with that kinda straight, black hair and know how to work with it. I guess I'm kinda lucky, because all my experiences have been great here. A lot of people complain that the service is lacking towards non-Koreans, but I never found that the case. I'm Chinese and speak zero Korean (does watching k-dramas count?), but my first time there went smoothly and eventually started reserving for Jayna. As for guys, it's $20 for a simple trim. They're definitely qualified as hair salons, I know they go to hair styling conventions or something (wanted to get a haircut one weekend but they were out). If you don't speak Korean, bring a picture of a hair style you want. I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH. The hair stylist can't get it right (esp if there's a language barrier) unless they understand, and visuals are the best for that. After the trim, they wash your hair for you. These were honestly some of the better hair washes I've had for a salon, most of the time they massage your head thoroughly and always ask if the temperature's fine. Then, they hair-dry and ask if you want them to style it for you, I always say yes haha. For $20, Scissor Hands is one of the cheaper Korean hair salons in the area and I honestly think it's great. The service is always nice and understandable when I go. If you don't speak Korean like me, just make sure to bring a pic of the hairstyle you want the first time you go. Don't you hate when your bangs grow fast, and it feels like you just got your haircut, so you either: 1) use a barette 2) wait until your hair gets longer so you can get your bangs cut AND hair cut at the same time, or 3) cut your bangs yourself My stylist Jeff told me it's just $5 to get my bangs trimmed. And I've been pleased w/ how Jeff cuts my bangs the last 3 visits. Getting your hair colored is a diff. story. It's pretty expensive - at my last visit, I got a haircut, color, & partial highlights for $110. Jeff did a pretty good job but honestly I liked my highlights more when it was done at an American salon. One of my Korean salon friends said "American" salons are better at doing highlights, and Korean salons are better at perms - good tip to know when my hair is ready for a new color and/or perm. read more

I have basically two haircuts. I cut it really short like Caesar and then spike it. Then, I let it grow out cause I'm too lazy and cheap to get a haircut. I call this "the gel it like crazy to look neat" cut. Anyway, after constant grief from the people I work with, I finally decided to get a haircut. Although, to be fair, it's only been 6 weeks since my last cut and I usually make it last 2 months. I was told to try unga but scissor hands had better reviews on yelp (applause! plug). It is located in a small strip mall next to suno just outside of the hmart plaza in Duluth. The place is big and could've easily accommodated 20 patrons. My stylist was Andy or maybe it was tony. Anyway, he was quite amazing. He does this thing with the clippers that you've got to experience. Also, they wash you hair twice. Once before the cut and then after. He barely spoke English but this guy knows his way around a pair of scissors. He then styled my hair with wax and I've never looked better. Also, I realized today that I should use wax instead of gel. Overall, a great experience. I'm definitely going back. read more

Today was my first time trying out Scissorhand because my usual hair stylist is out of town until April. I had an appointment for 3pm but didn't get taken care of until 3:50pm. They were pretty busy. I had my color and cut done by Jay and he did an amazing job. I noticed his coloring technique and can tell that he is very skilled. I asked for chocolate brown with subtle highlights and he did it perfectly. My hair cut looks nice, wish there were more layers near my face but I'll let him know next time :) it was his first time working with my hair and he did an impressive job. This place is a machine. I called that morning and got a same day appointment (time of my choice). I didnt know who to ask for as it was my first time. I was assigned JinJu and had no complaints. From the time I walked in to the time I was out was about 25 minutes. Very to the point. Someone washed my hair and brought me to her chair. Once I told her what I wanted she went straight to work. As many of you know, this place is predominantly korean. I didnt see many non koreans or certainly non asians getting their hair cut. $35- pretty much the standard in Gwinnett. I've gotten my hair cut here twice by Mr. Jay, and he is really good. He cuts women's and men's hair very well. He's very professional and kind. If you're not sure what kind of style cut you want, he could suggest a great style that matches you well. If you're planning on going to get your hair cut on a weekend, I would suggest you call and make an appointment. Even with appointments, expect to wait 10-15minutes. Since they take walk-ins, it may take a while for them to finish up before they are ready for you. It's nice that they have a lot of places to sit, so you can relax or catch up on email while you're waiting. Once they call your name, you will have your hair washed, blow dried, and then ready for your hair cut. If you have pictures or ideas for your haircut, feel free to show them before you get your hair cut. You don't want to let them cut too much before you can say anything. I don't go to the hair salon often, because I leave disappointed about 75% of the time. However, I left Scissor Hands as a very happy customer. A women's haircut and digital perm cost $150 + tip. Making an appointment: Time for my bi-annual haircut! My friend found a picture to mimic - a short A-line cut with a slight perm. Up to this point, I had never had a perm in my entire life, so I was a bit nervous... She had positive experiences at Scissor Hands before, so we decided to schedule an appointment for the weekend. We called on Saturday afternoon, but they obviously had no more times available for the day. However, we were able to schedule something for the following afternoon - good enough. Hair wash (est. 5 min): Even if you schedule an appointment, expect a short wait. I think this is expected for most hair salons. My friend waited about 5 minutes before someone guided her to a seat for her haircut. I waited about 10 minutes. They helped me put on a gown and directed me to the hair washing station. I loved my hair wash. Such a nice scalp massage... I wanted to fall asleep. Haircut (est. 30 min): After getting my hair washed, they seated me for my haircut. My hairdresser was very friendly. I think the lack of a language barrier probably helped. I spoke Korean with her the entire time. I showed her the picture of the hair I wanted, and she studied it carefully. I also asked her what type of bangs I should get (the picture was only a side-view), and she shared some recommendations according to the haircut and my face shape. She started to snip away and made some small talk once in a while, but she paid great attention to my hair. She did an amazing job! I loved the hair even before getting the perm. She was also full of compliments. And who doesn't love compliments? Perm (est. 2 hrs): This took forever, but they gave me a hot cup of green tea, so can't complain. There are short transitions for the different stages, which makes it longer than it should. Not too bad though. Pretty much got chemicals brushed onto my hair, washed off, hair curled, hair heated, hair uncurled, hair sprayed with chemicals, and hair washed. My hairdresser did a great job answering all my questions and giving advice on how to care for my hair. The perm was definitely stronger than in the picture I showed her, but she discussed this with me beforehand to ensure that I would be okay with it. She explained that it would look prettier to get a stronger perm and let it loosen over time. I actually anticipated crazy curly hair, but I love how it turned out! My time at the salon ended with many compliments and a friendly goodbye (Note: You have to tip in cash). I will definitely be back anytime I need a haircut or perm.
