Where do you get your hair cut? That's the question you ask of a friend with the great haircut when you move to a new city. My friend's reply sent me to Van Michael, an upscale salon in the Buckhead (with locations elsewhere.) Since I've had the same stylist for 3 years and consider chair-hopping a crime, I was nervous to get a cut from a new stylist, but my experience at Van Michael put me at ease. After pleasantries with the receptionist (coffee and other beverages are offered) and tour of the immense salon (high ceilings, studio lighting, areas separated by service provided, and the "Tower," a flight-fancy booth where all appointments are booked that overlooks the dryer section), I was handed a "book." It featured clippings of models and celebrity hairstyles and eerily reminded me of middle school slumber party projects. This was apparently my stylist Georgia's book and it would come in handy later. Georgia greeted me in the reception area and led me to a changing room to prepare for the cut. She was warm and took the edge off. After seating me at her station, we discussed her thoughts on the mop that I had been growing out since May. She gave me some options to keep the length and then pulled out the "book" to illustrate what she would be doing to my hair. She was thorough. After a scalp massage and hair wash, she went to work on me. Half an hour later, I emerged with a cut I could more easily grow out, was easy to manage, and was stylish. Georgia showed me how to best style it over the next 12 weeks, then sent me on my way. Some interesting tidbits: In between cuts, Van Michael offers complimentary bang trims. All you have to do in drop in. No appointment is necessary. Junior stylists are less expensive to book. I paid $60 including a tip. More senior stylists I'm told charge upwards $100 for a cut/style. Hungry before or after your visit? Or need to get some grocery shopping out of the way? Wholefoods is right next door. I scheduled my next appointment in the afternoon, so I can kill two birds with one stone. read more

Van Michael at The Forum on Peachtree Parkway is FABULOUS! I've been going here for nearly 5 years now and was lucky enough to be placed with a wonderful colorist (Keri) and stylist (Darrarith) on my first visit. I have never deviated from these 2 people, as they are just fantastic, a lot of fun, not uppity or pretentious, and always listen to me and work with my needs/wants. (And yes, they've even told me 'no' sometimes when I've wanted something that just wouldn't work on me.) I've left with fabulous hair every single time. Never a bad cut, never a funky color that I didn't ask for (green, orange, or some other shade not found in nature that wasn't supposed to happen). Even the booking and check-out assistants are fabulous and will book your appointments in advance if you want them to - they always work with me! Also, I am never pushed into buying more products or anything I don't want. They will ask if you need anything, but if not, hey, that's ok too! Love that! This place is cool, fun, has above average skill level in pretty much every employee I've observed, and does fantastic hair without any pushy tactics or hard sells. I will NEVER go anywhere else! read more

I have been customer of Van Michael for many years now. Until very recently, I've usually had great results with the cuts I've received. But because my usual stylist was booked solid & wasn't available for weeks I scheduled instead with Hunter whom I've never used before. I will never use again either!! This is the most awful, disappointing hair cut I've ever had. I had let it grow out (had to get past that awkward grow out stage) which took 8 months, so I was ready for a cut. Good God I so regret booking with Hunter. She gave me layers that make absolutely no sense. It is choppy & I swear to God, very difficult to style! I expected more from this Salon. Be warned! Do not let Hunter cut your hair. You will regret it. Thank God it grows back because I'd hate to be stuck like this forever. read more

I decided that I'd like to have a professional give me a makeup lesson and immediately thought of the lovelies here at Van Michael. I booked an appointment with Ardin and arrived Saturday morning ready to learn. They use all Aveda products, which I've used before and like, so that was fine with me. Ardin was awesome! She taught me how to do a standard daily look, which I think I was actually pretty good at before the lesson, but wanted to see. She also taught me how to transition it to an evening look. We had a lot of fun! At the end of the appointment she wrote down everything she'd used on my face so that I'd have a handy reference and not have to try to draw from memory. I was thrilled to find out that she also does eyebrows, since my eyebrow lady of 8 years moved to the Mall of Georgia. I booked my next appointment before leaving and hope I've found my new eyebrow expert! Everyone at this salon is always very professional and friendly, and the manager, Denise, is great. Oh, and ask for Faith when you need a color expert! read more

Since I am a picky person when it comes to cuts and styles, I am hesitant to go to any place for a cheap haircut (Great Clips, I'm looking at you!) I've had really bad experience before. Anything from chopping my hair off too short to having my hair caught in the blow dryer. When I got referred to Regis, I enjoyed it but the stylist left...I even followed her but she kept flopping to different salons so I gave up. For the past few years, probably 4 or so, I am proud to say that I've been a customer of Van Michael in Norcross at The Forum. I took a chance there since I was originally recommended to go to the Van Michael in Sandy Springs...but since The Forum was closer to my house. Ever since then, AVA has been my hair stylist. What I love about her is she's sweet and considerate. I always bring a picture with me of which hairstyle I want and she does her magic. She's so good that she just parts my hair start trimming away, layering my hair off in sections, with a scissor, instead of using that other tool (which I totally am blank of the name but that's what other stylist have used). I recommend everyone to see AVA, she's simply the best. Even though Van Michael is a high-end salon, the price to see AVA is well worth it and actually more affordable than other stylist. read more

Van Michael Salon continues to take the cake when it comes to outstanding salon services. Thanking the salon reception gods that I was so carefully booked with the ever so talented Julie and Margot for a cut & color. My hair felt and looked so much more beautiful than what I had envisioned. I walked out feeling like a million bucks. Thank you staff, Julie & Margot for the ideal salon experience! read more

Part of the reason I love this salon is because it's very close to my house and one of my jobs. I've had my hair styled by three different stylists and been satisfied with all three. I have thick, curly hair so it can be hard to work with. I always get compliments on my cut when I've gone there. Currently I see Chelsea and I really like her. She listens to what I want and I don't feel like I'm at her mercy. She makes my hair look smooth and put together. The rest of the staff is good natured and helpful. They try to make the overall experience pleasant for all their customers. It is a bit on the expensive side ($50 for a cut and style), but that has a lot to do with the area and level of service. If you're looking for a cheap cut, this isn't the place for you. If you're looking for a salon that will take the time to work with you and give you the best cut possible, check it out. read more

I've never had bad service here, and Jacoby is amazing and remembers me every time I come (which is a whopping once or twice a year since I live in Seattle). I got my hair lopped off from butt-length to chin length about 10 years ago and I've never looked back. After the first session, I've consistently been seeing Jacoby every time I've returned to the Atlanta area. I'm so in love with how he cuts my hair that I book him about 2-3 months before I'm in town, just to make sure I can get an appointment! Fair warning, ladies, he's popular! Denise is also great - she's got great customer service and is always accommodating and sweet. It's always super easy for me to get here - I try to be about 15 minutes early and then just get a coffee at B&N before my hair cut. Of course, it's not really necessary. The staff here always offers you coffee, tea, or water as soon as you check in for your appointment. I somehow always manage to forget that (except when writing this, go figure). Prices here are pretty reasonable for an upscale haircut. Trainees are of course the cheapest, starting at $35/cut. Jacoby I think is on the higher end of the spectrum, currently clocking in at $92/cut. He's so worth it, though. Check 'em out! I've referred numerous people to this salon after getting compliments on my hair :) read more

I am pleased to say I have found my new go to place for all things beauty! After leaving my last salon after a bad experience I was a bit nervous but I was immediately put at ease by the great service here. I booked myself for eyelash and eyebrow tinting followed by full highlights and a haircut (the works, lol). Each service was done by a different person and each person I was with was great. This salon has really put some thought into how they treat their clients. I was having so much fun while I was there and also learning about how to style my hair better, different hair types and so on. The manager of the salon personally introduced herself to me, thanked me for coming in and gave me some Aveda hand lotion. Little things like this go a long way with me. I made sure to book my appointments with the same people on my way out. Professionals in every sense of the word. read more

I called to make an appointment as a first time customer. I told them I've only had my hair colored once to cover up grays and the only reason I did that was due to a lot of my hair falling out last fall due to stress, so the gray was more noticeable. I didn't like the color because it was too dark compared to my natural color and I feel like there was a slight red tint. She put me on hold forever and came back and said I needed a consultation before I could get an appointment. I'm like ok...I work full time and I don't have a lot of extra time, but we I'm off on Monday (4th of July weekend), so I can come in then. She says they don't do appointments for consultations (which they are requiring) just come in anytime we are open and they will consult with you when they have time...I'm like what? So, I could be waiting up there for an hour for them to consult me? She repeated they don't make appointments for consultations and just work you in when they have time. I was like naw, I don't even want to go in for real appointment for 2 hours much less have to go up there and wait for them to have time to consult me for who knows how long. I have a full time job and 2 little kids and my time is precious. Not a good first impression for sure. read more

Wife comes here all the way from south of Atlanta over the closer locations (downtown, Buckhead, etc.). Stylists (and clientele) here are much less pretentious but equally skilled as we've been to two of their other locations a few years back. I get my Aveda stuff here which also still credits our loyalty membership. read more

When it comes to my hair I as well as most women I know will do just about anything once I've found a great stylist. Needless to say I've been a client of Van Michael Salons for over a decade and have frequently travelled an hour just to see my girls - totally worth it. Hunter is my go-to for any cut. She is nothing short of amazing, and always knows exactly what I want and what best suits me. For color I adore Faith, and Tessa is very good as well. Prices are competitive for a high end salon, which I don't mind paying when I always leave feeling like a celebrity who's had the royal treatment. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating! read more

Dararith is not only a great stylist but a super friendly person and he makes going to get a haircut an enjoyable experience for a person like me (who historically doesn't like going to the salon). He genuinely cares about making sure I'm happy with the cut, makes appropriate suggestions for style and works with me to ensure I'm satisfied. The VM staff here also has been very friendly, helpful and courteous. read more

I am not one to be mean and I feel terrible writing this but I've truly had a salon horror story at this location. When I left the salon yesterday 2/17, I felt great. Thought my new hair looked decent even though all my family disagreed. Today after washing my hair and getting some cut off...I'm horrified. My ends are literally breaking off in tiny pieces. The top of my head is orange. And overall my hair looks like I did it myself which says a lot. To start off I won't be saying the name of the person who did my hair although it worries me that she will do this to others. Yesterday I went into Van Michael (Forum location) to get rid of my box dyed black hair. Not an easy thing to do and I'm more than aware of that. They said no problem and asked if I wanted Olaplex as it would help prevent my hair from getting damaged. I said sure! Things started off fantastic, I was having a great experience as always (been here 2x before) and really enjoyed talking to my hairdresser. I thought it was strange that she never strand tested or at least asked what all I've done to my hair but I figured I should just leave it to the professional. Big mistake. After almost 3 hours of highlighting I was finally sat under the heater. A few minutes later the development of my highlights were checked and the whole vibe changed, the hairdresser went silent and then asked me if my whole hair was dyed blue in the past 6 months. I said no and it was like she didn't believe me. I told her I only had blue tips but those were cut out a month ago. She proceeded tell me that half of my hair turn turned green. I've never dyed half of my hair blue so that was alarming but I figured it was just a chemical reaction. She kept insisting I did something with my hair 6 months ago which just wasn't true, I hadn't dyed my hair in a very long time before I dyed it black in October 2018. It was reddish brown 6 months ago. The hairdresser clearly became stressed and starting running around trying to figure out what to do and never stopped putting the blame on me saying "this is the consequence of dying your hair yourself" and "this is why we never know the outcome of doing people's hair when we don't know what's been done to it before". I totally get that, but you never asked what was done to my hair or strand tested it so I don't see how I should be getting blamed. Anyway, she grew increasingly rough with my hair when washing it, pulling it, drying it, everything was so rough. I felt it being ripped out of my head. The tension was highly uncomfortable. The hairdresser even admitted she should have strand tested my hair and made me sign a waiver but that didn't happen. Honestly, I wasn't mad or upset that it turned green, it wasn't a huge deal and could be fixed one way or another. I literally had to tell her to stop stressing because I wasn't even stressed over my hair turning green, worse came to worse we would just have to dye it dark again. It was very unprofessional and awkward. After multiple toners were used, I was finally taken to the chair for it to be dried. My hair didn't look green at all which was a relief but it did look damaged at the ends, I don't understand why they push Olaplex if it didn't do a single thing for my hair. I told the hairdresser that I never style my hair but she proceeded to burn the crap out of it with a styling tool, my hair was literally smoking. Four hours later (and in total) she told me I should get an inch cut off my hair...I didn't want to but said she could go ahead and do it. Then I was told she doesn't cut hair and I would have to wait and see if another hairdresser was available to do that after being at the salon for FOUR hours. I thought that was insane considering she was the one who fried my hair. Towards the end the hairdresser rushed me out obviously irritated with the situation which I again don't understand how it was my fault. At this point I think she just styled my hair to make it look acceptable when it is not. How she let me leave the salon like that I don't know. Needless to say I paid $130 to have my hair ruined. Today it looks horrendous, it's very dry and brittle at the ends even after I just got half of them cut off at another salon that admitted Van Michael did a terrible job with my hair. It's also all types of colors...including black still. I'm so disappointed as I have loved this salon and recommended it to everyone. I don't even know what can be done about this now but I will NEVER return here. I will also never recommend this salon to anyone again. I am beyond upset and I find it embarrassing for Van Michael when I tell people who did this to my hair when they want to know why it looks and feels like crap. read more

Called this place to schedule appointment, was told I have to give them my credit card so they can charge it if I cancel appointment in less than 24 hours. Can you believe this? That made me very uncomfortable, to say the least. It is not like I am going to schedule and cancel, schedule and cancel left and right, just for the fun of it, but I want to be able to re-schedule my haircut if for any good reason I can not be there at the scheduled time. I don't like doctors offices that require you to pay if can't make to your appointment. I told lady to forget it, I will find some other place to get my haircut without giving my credit card. And I did. They called and left me a message twice, one time at the time my appointment was and one more time later on the same afternoon. I guess they were pissed there is no credit card to charge... I hope they change their policies before they alienate even more customers like they did me. read more

Only giving 2 stars because the people are nice. Over priced for the quality of their work.

I admit it... I am a little bit of a salon jumper... but I can definitely see myself going back to this one. One of the many good things about this salon is that it is also a new talent salon, which means you can get a cut and style for a portion of the price- AND the new talent is still very qualified and do a great job. I paid $28 for my cut and style- and I still got all of the regular indulgences... shampoo, neck massage, head massage.. the works! This location lives up to the Van Michael name. read more

Decided to get a rather short and drastic haircut. I went to "unnamed place" and although they didn't completely screw it up, it just wasn't the look I showed them I wanted. Van Michael saved the day! Roxy was absolutely fabulous and really listened to what I wanted. She was able to make it happen and I've had nothing but compliments since! Go see Roxy! read more

To me Van Michael is perfection. The Forum location is great. I once drove down to the Buckhead location for last minute highlights and that salon has a much different feel. Royce always cuts my hair while Faith does my highlights. The consistent level of quality and attention my hair gets is worth every penny, but I find the prices to be pretty fair. I've been to other uppity salons where they charge you for every little service 'extra' and sometimes bill you just to blow dry your hair after highlights. Van Michael just makes sure that your hair comes out great with whatever it takes and always dries your hair for you. Though it sounds simple; my favorite thing about Van Micheal is that they listen to you. If you say just an inch, that is what you'll get. They don't ever push you to do something you don't want to. Classy establishment, skilled workers, close by. What more you you want? Added perk: the place ends up being a blend of all the wonderful Aveda product smells, which is therapeutic in and of its self! read more

Update: I ended up keeping my appt, and only recommend this place if you can get an appt with Redding as your stylist. The woman who greeted me seemed very stuck up and not very friendly. When I said this was my first time she seemed very annoyed that she had to explain the "process" to me. I also felt like she was judging me b/c I know I'm not the most attractive person. Most of the staff there gave me the vibe of being better than everyone else. Redding was the most likable person there that I came into contact with. Would I go back? If I could get an appt with Redding I would consider it. Otherwise this place doesn't have great customer service and doesn't seem very inviting if you're not a Barbie doll. read more

The staff is friendly and courteous. My stylist Ginger asked me what I wanted, how I felt about my current style, and showed me what she thought would be a good change for my hair. I have to give this salon 5 stars, because I have found a place that can deliver the best color, cut , and makeup! I have never been able to find such great talent all in one place ! Koleen has been doing my highlights for over seven years, and I always leave feeling my best! When it come to makeup, there is noone better than Margery! I have been going here for years. Love Redding :) It is always a great experience from reception to check out. The professionals are always friendly, helpful and courteous. I am always getting stopped (in the market, in clothing stores, at my manicurist) by people who want to tell me that they love my cut and want to know where and who does it. I have sent in 2 "stranger" referrals in the last year. Van Michaels is worth fighting the morning traffic for! read more

This is a great place to go; very professional, friendly, clean, creative, etc. But this was the first and last time I'll ever pay $60 for a men's haircut. Sorry ladies - I know you all always have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for looking good, but I plan to capitalize on my good gender fortune by going to salons where they only charge me 25 bucks, which is almost anywhere else. read more

I was really disappointed at this location. My cut was great, color lasted 3 weeks at best. I went back for my next color appointment and was 10 minutes late for my 5:30 appointment. I immediately asked if that would be a problem and I was told "no." By 6pm I was still sitting on the bench, everyone else had come and gone. I asked the gentleman up front what the status of my appointment was and that I needed to leave before 7pm. He said he would find the status out of my appointment but never left his post. Just after my inquiry my colorist walked by, never acknowledged me and went into a private office and seemingly took a break. At this point I was the only left waiting for an appointment and not one of the personnel thought to ask me how long I had been waiting or what I had been waiting for. Finally at 6:15, I gave up and told the host I had to leave. He had nothing to say other than "Would you like to reschedule?" What made it worse is that the manager was there when this happened and no one made an effort to call me or apologize to me for wasting my time. I went to Van Michael in Buckhead for years and never had an experience like this. I will never return. read more

I have used this salon for over a year for a handful of cuts and highlighting. I am 61. B was the stylist who I preferred. I discovered he had left after a few months when I returned so at the recommendation of the receptionist went with Victoria. I used a picture w/ B for an undercut last summer due to the large amount of hair I have. Victoria gave me a 30- second massage then asked the amount I wanted cut. I showed her the undercut also. She did not ask about the amount for undercutting and shaved it about 3/4 up the back of my head with my longer hair covering it but barely compared to the amount I had. Growing it out takes longer than cutting. Very disappointed, makes my hair appear thinner on top which was not the goal and since is getting colder I would have preferred much less being cut. I may return again due to convenience and another chance w/ a different stylist. They frequently do not have same week, sometimes same month, appointments available. read more

I got my haircut here awhile ago, but I will definitely be going back soon. My stylist was Royce, and he was super nice and did a great job on my hair. The salon and its staff were super helpful and friendly as well. The overall experience was well worth the price. read more

I've been here several times now over the last 2 years and I am disappointed with my haircuts. The color has been very good when done, but it doesn't last very long. The last haircut I got was just the last straw - one side literally was longer than the other, and the layers were really choppy and did not lay well or make any sense at all. It was hard to style and felt super dry. I just got a cut somewhere else and I requested a conditioning treatment. The stylist said it was just my haircut that was giving me such dry crunchy bulk and she was right, after the new cut my hair is smooth again. Not to mention that they are always booked way out and the receptionists are SO RUDE on the phone. read more

Just got my hair butchered at Van Michaels at the Forum in Norcross. I called the salon ahead of time to make sure they had a stylist that could cut short hair. They not only told me they had one, but they had two. I went in for a consult and cut. I came out with a huge chunk cut out of my hair near the forehead/temple region. Yes, I know - could not have been in a more noticeable spot. I only noticed this the next day, as the stylist kept combing my hair over the bald spot. I called the salon the next day, and was told by the manager to come in that day. She was not there when I arrived, but the stylist was. He told me that there was no hole when I left the previous evening, insinuating that I took scissors to my hair afterwards. Then he suggested its supposed to look like that.....after which he said "well, this is what you wanted". I posted on Van Michael's Facebook page and also submitted a review via email - in which I mentioned that my review will probably disappear. Guess what??? My review disappeared and I have heard zero from the salon - no apology, no refund, nothing. read more

I have been to both Van Michael salons in Norcross and in Sandy Springs and they are without a doubt the best hair salon in the Atlanta area. Their stylists and color techs are amazing and I have never been disappointed. They are a little more pricey depending on what "level" stylist you ask to do your hair. You can always start out in with the new talents stylists first if you need to be on a budget but you won't lose the quality of service. I have gone to other places that are closer to my home but I always go back to this salon so it's worth the drive. read more
