I landed a new job and decided that my tired ash blonde hair needed to be brought back to life but also be super low maintenance, aka become dark brown. I wanted to go to a place that was close to home, affordable and had stylist who knew what they were doing. Salon de Elephant seemed to fit the bill so I booked an appointment with Melissa. I had saved a bunch of pictures of the shade of browns that I really liked and showed them to her. Melissa could sense what I was envisioning in my mind and made two suggestions and gave her advice when I couldn't decide. I went with her choice and it did not disappoint! Melissa skilfully turned my old colour into new, one that is quite difficult (apparently the blonde could become green if not done properly) and made me one happy girl. The colour came out darker than I had enticipated but she reassured me that it would fade into the shade that I wanted after a few washes. Indeed it did! I would definitely go back to her! I think this salon has amazing customer service. They really take the time to have a consultation with you before hand and the head massage here is so amazing. That being said, I've came here at least 5 times but everytime I wouldn't get the result that I want. The colour in my hair fades within a week and i've emphasized to them that I want to get ride of the orange tone in my hair but I slowly realized my hair is actually getting more orangey. My mom also came here for highlights, told them she doesn't want the orangey brown but that's what she ended up getting in her hair. It's honestly frustrating cause I've been a loyal customer but they really need to step up their game in dyeing hair. Overall, I don't recommend you to come here if you want a balayage/ombré, especially for non-natural hair colours. read more

I am extremely picky with my hair as in, I go months without a haircut if I cannot find a decent stylist who is capable of handling Asian hair. This place did not disappoint! I had Andrea who was fantastic and did not ask too many questions (great for ppl who just want to relax). She asked me what I wanted in the initial walk-in, and checked in with me throughout the cut. Omg, I can't say enough amazing things about this place. I had chosen this salon based on their Yelp reviews. Believe the hype! I booked an appointment with Min for a cut and colour. When I walked in, I was offered a hot towel and a drink menu (drinks cost extra). My stylist showed up right away and went over the photos I had brought in. She then checked out my hair and made a game plan. She kept me informed every step of the way and followed up to make sure I was still ok with everything. I felt like a valued customer. There was no "just a minute, let me answer the phone" and was offered water (cucumber water at that!) and snacks. When my cut was finished, it still didn't quite look like I imagined, so she fixed the issue caused by my bangs growing out and it looks great! Top-tier service! I used to get haircuts in random shops wherever it was convenient, but now I stick with Salon de Elephant. Their new location at Yonge-Sheppard is even bigger and brighter, and really matches their energy and style. I truly enjoy the whole experience here. Everyone's friendly, focused, and committed to providing a great service. I only go for the men's haircut which includes two washes and a head massage, but I do see a lot of women get their hair treatments here too. You can probably get far less for around the same price at other places, and if you find cheaper you'll probably get exactly what you paid for. (I still remember the horror that was my $7 haircut in Chinatown years ago). My stylist is Karen who is very accommodating but also helpful in suggesting suitable styles. While I usually ask for simple, clean cuts, the best compliments from friends/co-workers/acquaintances come when I just trust her advice. Between haircuts, it's so easy to forget how awesome it feels to have someone massage your head, but seriously here -- one of the best head massages I've had to date. I had my hair cut by Sudien. He and the other staff there provided very good customer service (hot towel, hot drink, even helped me take off and put on my coat). Sudien took the time to listen to my concerns and was very attentive during his work. Very friendly, too! The haircut, a long bob, wasn't particularly exceptional, and I actually didn't like how it fell (I'm low maintenance and am usually most happy with cuts that look good without the need to do extra styling...and I've definitely had cuts where this was the case.) A few days after the cut, I decided that I wasn't happy with the back of the cut and emailed them to ask what could be done. They invited me back to the salon, and Sudien made some changes that I'm now happy with. So TL'DR, Sudien really cares if you're happy about your cut! read more

First time here. They have some good services. Hot towel was offered as soon as you walked in and jackets taken away. A few people here mentioned Korean snacks freely offered, but we did not experience that. We were given a menu to order some drinks and snacks from (you have to pay) including coffe and tea and soft drinks. However, they never came to ask us to order or if we wanted water (which was free according to the menu) It's bright and spacious, the staff are courteous and helpful. My stylist (i am sorry I forgot her name...a Japanese lady) gave me a lot of advice on how to style my hair after the cut and what product to use. One thing that was also a bit odd was they didn't offer us magazines to read while in the chair like most hair salons do. However, This could be a plus for someone who like to watch the stylist work (just in case it veered into a direction you don't like). I think it prob helps with the accuracy of cutting... in other salons, I have had stylists keep adjusting my head position coz it's buried in the magazines which can make it difficult for them to get the hairline just right. As always, five star treatment and haircut at Salon de Elephant. They've moved to a new space further south on Yonge st. Place is now bigger, brighter, but otherwise has the same chill vibe as their old place. I havent had a regular stylist lately, because I'm travelling too often to book regular appointments and sometimes forget who was the last person to cut my hair. Still, every time I'm in Toronto, I come here because I've always gotten consistent and sweet service, and excellent hair cuts. There must be some Salon de Elephant philosophy, because everyone working here takes great pride in their work, whether they are washing your hair, or serving tea, or doing the actual cutting. This is why I keep coming back, because more than just one stylist, I feel like I can trust anybody at Elephant to do a good job. read more

Before I begin, I must make it known that I'm not the type to exaggerate. That said: THIS WAS THE BEST SALON EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. And I've been to a handful of salons! After some research, I booked an appointment online with Andrea. Her bio on the salon's website said she specialized in long hairstyles + her last name made me assume she was Filipino (I guessed right) which means she would probably know how to work with my hair type perfectly. The whole booking system was super straight forward and easy, and I received my booking confirmation in less than an hour. I took the less than 5 minute walk from Yonge-Sheppard station and walked up the stairs to the salon, and the first thing I noticed was how CUTE the salon was. Gotta give them 10/10 on their interior design. They had a community table/waiting area, charging station, huge mirrors, and a book case that separated the washing area from the cutting area. A girl directed me to sit and offered me a warm hand towel (Like.. WHAT!?) and a drink menu that had an assortment of Asian drinks from $2-$4 plus complimentary tea/water. I didn't wait too long for Andrea to come over and have our lil consultation. The same girl who checked me in washed my hair + gave me a head and shoulder massage. I kid you not I almost fell asleep! It felt amazing and very luxurious. When it was time for Andrea to cut my hair, she went straight to it with minimal talking (which I appreciated - I'm not much of a talker) and cut my hair super fast! She dried it off with her hands + a blow dryer at first, then went in with a flat brush. I LOVED THIS. I hate when I feel like my hairs being pulled out of my scalp with aggressive round brush hair drying/styling. After a few minutes she did some last minute touch ups and walked me to the front desk where a guy cashed me out. Since I've yet to find a "favourite" hair salon in the GTA, I always try out different salons every time I want a haircut and/or dye. After reading through all the good reviews on Yelp, I decided to give Salon de Elephant a try! First thing first, the customer parking is a bonus since it is mostly Green P or street parking in that area. There are only 2 spots available so get there early to snatch a spot. I also liked the online booking system as you can request your hair dresser and your timeslot. This avoids any misunderstandings and it will secure your spot. The salon felt very tranquil and spacious as soon as I walked in; I definitely like how it isn't cramped and there's enough space for each client. I requested Melissa as my hairdresser and she was super helpful! As I don't know much about hair, she answered ALL of my questions and gave me a few suggestions/options. She wasn't annoyed by the number of hair questions that I had =) It was my first time bleaching my hair with balayage so I was a bit nervous but I wanted to do it anyway. She reassured me that it would turn out the way I had wanted it. She was great! The haircut turned out awesome and the head massage during the washing was REALLY relaxing. I felt asleep! I enjoyed the complimentary lemon citron tea and the snacks! They made sure I got water refill when my cup was empty. I've been going to Salon de Elephant for a few years now, and I've always had a really good experience. I got my balayage done by Sudien a few years ago and have gone back to him a for a few refreshes since and he has done an amazing job every time. He always starts with a consultation where you go over some photos and let him know what you like and he's great at telling you what is or isn't possible given your hair type. He's very meticulous, which means your appointment won't be short (my balayage, cut, and style usually takes 4-5hrs), but it's definitely worth it, you wouldn't want someone rushing around with bleach. Also the head massages are always amazing, they put a hot towel under your neck which feels fantastic! Prices are also really reasonable considering the level of service you get. They moved locations to Yonge and Sheppard! I didn't know that so when I got to their old location, there was a sign on the door saying they moved.. When I got to the new location, it's much bigger, now has 10 seats instead of 6, to accommodate more customers. Waiting area is bigger and neater too, most likely because it's more spread out now. Sudien was my stylist and he was quite good. His english isn't the best but he speaks Cantonese, which worked out for me. He advised to change the hair style so we went with that, and it turned out quite good. I was pretty happy with it. For $30 + tax, i would say it's average pricing compared to other salons in the area. Overall, the service was good from start to finish, from hair washing, to the cut, then to styling. read more

I've been coming to this salon fairly regularly for the past 6+ years (since they open) and I must say that I've never been disappointed. Located in a very convenience location near Yonge and Sheppard, Salon de Elephant is a trendy, open concept salon that has amazing atmosphere, great music, warm and comfortable decoration. They also offer a wide range of beverages you can choose from while you are waiting for your stylist. I always have Karen as my stylish, we usually sit down and chat about what I want so she can make expert recommendation based on my hair type. We then moved to the back of the shop to have hair wash and head massage. I really like the hot towel service, it is totally relaxing. I would describe Salon de Elephant itself is a relaxing experience. It's not very often that you will find a professional who really cares and puts a lot of effort into all the little details, and I think Karen does a really good job on that. The place takes appointments and walk-ins, but I would recommend booking ahead of time (They have online booking!), since they do get quite busy and most of the time u may not able to have your service on the same visit. Min has been my stylist for the last year and a half and she is the absolute best! She not only listens to what I want but actually delivers and I have yet to leave her chair disappointed. She is incredibly meticulous with every aspect, from cutting to styling, and I really appreciate the fact that she always takes her time to ensure that the final look is perfect. She's awesome and I can honestly say that I trust her 100% with my hair! The salon itself is very open, airy and comfortable. There is a waiting area with plenty of seating and they provide you with a drink menu and a hot towel right after you are seated. This is now my go-to regular salon! Loved that they moved from Yonge and Finch to Yonge and Sheppard which is super close to my place! Their new space is bigger and brighter! I always ask for Karen as my stylist. She is really great and always a joy to come here to see her. I am quite picky about my bangs and I have had really good experiences with Karen. Best of all, they offer free bang trim - which is so helpful! You girls know that bangs can be high maintenance! I also love that they use bumble and bumble products. Karen introduced me to the bumble and bumble dry shampoo and it's been such a lifesaver! I have tried other dry shampoos before and they never have the desired results. This one actually adds volume too! I have recommended a few friends here already - so don't hesitate to give this place a try! Tip: As with most salons, they are busier on weekends, so try to go on weekdays if you can. I normally get my hair cut at B&B, today they were full and so I looked up places in the area and decided to give this salon a try. I booked for 3, and due to traffic, I was an hour late. Nonetheless- they were extremely friendly when I walked in and fit me in between their reservations. Was given a hot towel and some water. Calvin cut my hair and although it was super quick - I only have myself to blame because they were doing me a favor. He explained the products he was using and made recommendations to me. The wash and head massage was great as well. Overall it was a really good experience. They appreciate your business, I don't think B&B does. I've never tried short hair before so I was looking for a salon that could cut short hair and was experienced in knowing what looks good and what doesn't on someone. I came across this salon on yelp and went for it. The stylist that I chose was Saya and she was able to prepare my hair for donation. There was hot towels when I just entered which was nice for my cold hands and after I got shampooed, she put a warm towel under my neck to lay down on while she massaged my scalp. It was very relaxing. After blow drying I wanted to thin my hair because it was kind of puffy and she agreed that I had a lot of hair. After fixing and doing readjustments, a guy came over to straighten my hair. The end result suited my face shape well and had a mature cool look I was going for. I only cut my hair once a year or so, hence it's been awhile since I've re-visited this salon. Good to know it's still amazing! Last few times I was here, it was still at their old location. I had the best layered cut and styled curls EVER. Seriously got so many compliments. This time I went to the salon and got the same stylist again cause she's amazing and checks in on me to make sure she understands the look I'm going for. Ended up with a great haircut, styled curls, and a great head massage during the wash. (some things never change :) thank goodness!) But the most awesome part was, I took my little sister here to get her hair washed and styled for her birthday. She loved the head massage and she ended up with the most luscious, beautiful loose curls EVER!! I am so jelly I don't have long thick hair like that. But everyone loved her hair. Been here twice in the past year and every time I come in i don't really get the results that I was expecting. The first time asked to lighten my roots to my previously dyed hair. She said i would have to come again to do so. I'd like to point out that I don't have jet black hair to begin with. Instead she said could lighten the area so it would be be like an ombre and with another session it would be it would match. I'm used to going to other salons that will get your hair to the colour you want in one session (even if it takes 7 hours). She ended up dyeing the rest of my hair darkening everything. Although it didn't look bad, it just wasn't what i wanted. Today, I wanted to dye my hair a dark grey. I had a different stylist and assistant than the previous time. She showed me a colour book and told me I would have to bleach my hair, which is what i expected. She also said that realistically it won't be as ashy since my current hair is brown. She ended up not bleaching it and just made my hair darker... I'm not sure if there was a language barrier but my hair doesn't look anything special ): This place is a lot cheaper than most salons but i'd rather spend more money to get the hair i want. They also got a lot of dye on my face and neck so it looks like i have random birthmarks everywhere. read more

My hair is very thick and dark so I understand that it can be difficult to work with. Finally! I found a salon that actually gives me what I want! Saya consulted with me on what I wanted to do. She told me what was possible and was honest about what wasn't possible with my type of hair. She also gave me tips on how to take care of my hair. I'm giving this place a 3/5 stars because I have mixed feelings about this hair salon as some of the stylists are very good and others not so much. The first time I went, I got Min. She was EXCELLENT. She cut my hair exactly like the picture I showed her. I also loved the head massage! The second time I went, I got Saya (because Min was fully booked). Although she is super nice, she cut my hair very uneven and I actually had to trim my hair once I got home as I didn't realize it until later [Even my husband who doesn't notice things, noticed my uneven hair :( ]. This place is the bomb dot com. I've never been here before and I was just accompanying my friend (who has also never been here before) and the staff were just generally very kind and accommodating. I only came to wait for my friend and have a drink and the barista (sorry, I was too shy to ask for his name) treated me so well I was gushing. Beside the sitting area by the counter, there are varieties of travel books/novels/articles to read as well as magazines. It really was like a cafe and a salon in one space, which I loved. The music is nice too, it kind of drowns out the salon noises like hair dryers and whatnot. My friend also had a great experience too, because her stylist was super descriptive and kind during the process of discussing what kind of style and look she wanted before getting the treatment. While washing her hair, her hairdresser also gave her "the most relaxing head massage ever". Also, they give you a little gift after you pay with a business card from your stylist! *Small tip: they don't take credit so make sure you bring your debit or cash. The location is right by Sheppard-Yonge station so chances are, parking is going to be complicated/impossible unless you reside in the nearby condos. Transit is a better option for easy access. I have been to almost all the 'best' salons in downtown across the GTA and I can honestly say that the experience I had at Salon de Elephant was the only one that made me want to visit again voluntarily, without force. All these other salons take so much pride in their 'expertise' in what they sell but know nothing about what customers mean to a business, hence is why there is no 'top salon' in Toronto to be honest. I would like to thank Min and Michael for the exemplary service I got when I had my hair cut yesterday. I have heard lots of great reviews from this salon and they did not disappoint! I've been going to Elephant for many years. This place is awesome. The moment you step into the salon, from a warm great greet to professional hair advise and services, I basically don't have to worry and enjoy my stay every time. I in particular love their head-massage... especially in the days when you are sooo tired from work. I've been with Karen for many years. No matter how you would like your hair being done, Karen's professional advises give you options and the result? .. No disappointment. They have recently moved to a new location with larger space. I'm disappointed that it didn't work out because the first time I visited the salon, I had a great experience (albeit, it was only for a simple trim) but the stylist listened attentively, the salon is clean with pretty decor and everyone working there are friendly and welcoming. However, I strongly suggest you go elsewhere if you want to get your hair dyed. I asked for balyage/ombré and it turned out to look like highlights. I returned to let them know I was unhappy, they convinced me that it would look more like balyage/ombré if I curled my hair and that the next visit, they'd make it more apparent as it took time to get the colour I want because of my dark hair. They toned my hair free of charge as a way to make me happy. Couple weeks and my hair turned brassy again despite purchasing the products at their salon and following their instructions. Paid $125 for a colouring and the colour didn't even come out like he said it would. The top of my hair was coloured while the bottom didn't even change. When I told Sudien I couldn't even see it, he brought me to the washroom trying to convince me that it had actually change. I didn't want to argue so I paid, tipped and left. I have very long hair and I had not cut my hair in a long time. I was worried getting my hair cut would mean losing a lot of length or thinning it out. However my stylist Saya, listened to my concerns and cut my hair in a way that removed all the damage, kept the length, and even made my hair look thicker! She won't do anything to your hair that you don't ask her to do, she takes instructions very well and was sooo accommodating and polite. I have been visiting this salon for several years already. I have decided to write a review here as I have come across all these compliments about this salon. Karen, whom I see, is professional, stylish and helpful. Whenever I am bored with my haircut, she recommends creative styles which are suitable for me, and shares her thought and other ideas w me upon my "bad" idea. Salon de Elephant has moved from its former location to its' larger and more open concept location near Yonge and Sheppard. This location has loads of natural light, due to all the windows, which makes the place more open and welcoming. Upon walking up the flight of stairs, you will find yourself in their reception centre/merchandising area, where the decor is a mixture of minimalist, along with retro furniture. There is a small area to read actual hard covered books, as well as a small area to play some games. One of the new items that I noticed at this location, was the coffee maker located on their reception centre. The new location, continues to have the same hospitality and service that the former location had, as you still get your warm towel upon entry, along with the option to purchase hot/cold beverages. One thing I will note is that I much prefer that the warm towel comes to you wrapped in plastic and has a nice aromatic scent to the towel. There are more hair cutting stations that give you a sense of privacy, as there are at least six stand-alone stations where you are not sitting next to another person. This helps give you a sense of more personalized attention, during your time with our stylist. I had Karen cutting my hair and I must say that I appreciate the fact that she always does a hair consultation with me before cutting my hair and throughout the haircut, she is always receptive and open to any new changes or additions that I want done to my hair. Osco was my attendant who washed my hair and I greatly appreciated the warm towels that he applied to my face and neck during the hair conditioning, followed by the massage. When asked if he could apply the towel to my entire face, he was very accommodating and used several warm and scented towels to cover my whole face during the massaging of the conditioning. Totally made me feel like I was getting a spa experience. I would highly recommend anyone to get any service done at Salon de Elephant, as you will definitely be taken care of throughout your entire experience. I got my hair cut here by a top stylist and it wasn't worth $48. I asked for layers but after I got home, I noticed that my hair was very choppy at the front. I can't completely say I don't like this salon, however. The cut came with a short wash and styling after so I guess it was reasonable if my cut turned out normal. The salon itself is very cute and the ambiance is great! There seemed to be a lot of guys who were regulars getting their hair done so I'm thinking stylists who usually work on guys hair are pretty good. read more
