Kamiya is great. I'm a dude, who just looks a simple haircut sometimes. They deliver exactly that. I book an appointment online. I don't know how to style my hair. I don't know what looks good. I show up for my appointment, ask for recommendations, they give a good recommendation. They execute the haircut, give a nice wash, and I'm set. I've been here a couple times now, and always walk out happy. The vibe of the place is great. A cut typically takes an hour, but nothing ever feels rushed. It can get busy, but it never feels busy. I booked an appointment for my mom and myself over email and the team was super helpful! Located on the second floor, this Japanese hair salon was a beautiful, clean, tidy with lots of open space and great lighting. Everyone was incredibly helpful and friendly! Our hair dressers didn't have the best English but worked incredibly hard. We got digital perms and unfortunately we wanted it curlier than the end result and they offered to redo our perms for us! Below is an objective review of Kamiya Hairdressing in the North York location at Yonge and Finch. 1) I have been booking haircuts at Kamiya for about 10+ years. Originally went to Kamiya when they first opened in 2011. 2) Quality of the cuts are superior to other "newer" establishments ie. yonge salon,Balance etc. I have not tried other services, just plain cuts and hair dye. 3) The ambiance is superior to other "newer" establishments with open air space and lighting is not extremely harsh on your face that casts random shadows after the cut. 4) Duration of the hair cuts are usually around 1 hour of time and the stylist is not constantly rushing you out of the place like it's Friday after work. 5) I am consistently content with the service. There hasn't been a time where I was upset with my hair or anything. If you are willing to pay around $60-$80 for a cut, you should consider Kamiya, however, if you are not willing to pay for the price range then suggest going to other hair places. Very disappointing color & cut experience! Basically after spending over $150, the color faded out to the ugliest brass color and I now have two different tones on top and bottom parts of my hair. I will upload a before and after photo in the gallery. I walked in after checking the reviews on both Yelp and Google. I had about 5 inches of roots grown out in my natural dark hair color, and the rest was previously colored medium brown. I wanted something dark so it won't be so awkward when my roots grows out. It was very hard to ask for a recommendation from the stylist since her English was not good, so I couldn't fully rely on her and finally just showed her a picture which clearly depicted what I wanted. The first time she colored she messed up because it turned out to be an overall golden brown, and we only saw it after washing and drying my hair. She had to do the whole process again, wash and dry again. Now that the color was looking ok, she didn't do much of a hair cut, maybe 5 minutes at most and it just felt so rushed. At the end of the day it took over 3 hours but at least my hair looked fine. I tipped $30, which I think was pretty generous considering how unprofessional the stylist was. And after 2 weeks it all turned to $&]*#^......in less than 2 weeks the color faded and my hair was brassy and coppery with a distinct difference between top part and bottom part. I have never hated my hair so much! No not even when I had 5 inches of roots! And this cost me $150! I could've done a better job with a box of Japanese hair color. I'm never going back to this place again after the horrible turnout, and truly I need a refund. The quality of service is just unacceptable. read more

Overall experience: dissapointed. I STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND KAMIYA IF YOU DO NOT SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE. This is the first time a place has made me want to sign up Yelp and provide my feedback. I have been meaning to get a haircut and saw Kamiya Hairdressing during a walk. Out of a whim, I decided to get a haircut at this place. The receptionist was able to find an available hairstylist. I told them I wanted just a cut, no wash and shampoo. The hairstylist did a decent job on my hair. When I went to pay for the haircut, it was $56 including taxes. This was the most expensive CUT I have ever experienced. I asked about the breakdown and they said this is the price for a level 3 hairstylist regardless whether or not I opted out of a wash and shampoo. THEY DID NOT SHARE this information prior to the cut, I FELT DECEIVED. I could have had a cut at another place for A LOT less. This place IS NOT TRANSPARENT when it comes to PRICING OR mentions the different TIERS of hairstylists. You DO NOT get a choice of the hairstylist's LEVEL if it is a walk-in service. OK, having the nickname Dragonball Z here on Yelp, you know my hair means a lot to me. After my last stylist left Canada, I was searching high and low for a new stylist. After a long search I finally found Kamiya and I've been going ever since. Pros: Staff are great with hair Very friendly staff Online booking available Cons: Prices could be a bit high for some Those familiar with Kamiya know that this is their second location. The first location is located downtown. I was very happy to see a location open up in North York. Most of the stylists work at both locations during the week so if you like a certain one, you can go to either and still have the cut your hair. So, if you've ever met me, I have anime hair. I look straight out of an anime. As I said, since my last stylist left to go back home, Kamiya has been the only place able to cut my hair the way I need it. Tetsuo is my stylist. The man knows his stuff. He's very good and his attention to detail is amazing. Having said that, all the stylists at Kamiya know their s&#t. They really take their time to talk to you and explain to you what needs to be done so you get your hair the way you want. The Japanese have always been great when it comes to service. They make sure the customer is always satisfied. Every single staff member is super duper friendly. I have never been met with anything but a smile whenever I go. The cost for a cut is 35 for men and 45 for women. This may seem high for some, but if you go to a salon for hair and not a barber, it's a very standard price nowadays. You get a great cut at Kamiya so I think it's worth every cent. I've gone to salons where they charge even more and they were nowhere near as good as Kamiya. Online booking is available at both locations. The website is very easy to use. If you prefer a certain stylist the website lets you know which days you're stylist is available. Anyways, if you're looking to try out a new place to cut your hair, I suggest you go and give Kamiya a try. I don't go anywhere else for my hair now. read more

I received a men's haircut and was impressed by the attention to detail. However, I think it should be categorized into $$$. When it was all said and done, I paid $41 prior to tipping, which is more expensive than other Korean/Japanese salons I've been too. That being said, I was happy with the service and would go back. The staff are so dedicated to their job, and you get what you paid for. If you have a big occasion and would like a reliable hair salon, this would be a great choice. read more

Came in with a bright orange color wanting to have my roots bleached and dye to the same orange as the rest part. I even brought the dye I use to show them. Before I start, I am well aware that I am firmly outside the target demographic for this salon. I'm white, I have naturally curly hair that I wear short, and I really don't like to fuss with it too much. I came in with a low-maintenance style that I liked, and my main issue was that my hair had grown out too much and needed to be neatened and thinned with some of the length removed. First, the positives: I really liked the online booking system. The salon is a great location (close to the subway and such) and looks nice. The staff were very polite and accommodating. The hair wash was pretty good. When a piece of hair near my face grew in funny a few weeks later, they fixed it immediately and for free. I had paid extra for the most senior stylist, noting that the website specifically said that they spoke the best English. I still felt that there was a language barrier and this was very frustrating, considering this was one of the main reasons why I had paid extra. I don't remember who worked on me, but she seemed to misunderstand that I didn't want it too short, because I had specifically said "not very short" and the first thing she did was to type "very short hair curly" into Google Images to help pick a style. The cut was done very quickly. The hairdresser repeatedly suggested that I might want to blow-dry my hair at home despite me saying that I wasn't interested in that kind of maintenance, and that I only wear my hair naturally. She was willing to cut off more length at my request, but seemed to be very conservative in the amount she removed. I guess it's because you can always cut off more. In any event, my hair looked nice right after, but after sleeping on it for a week and washing it, I realized it was still too long and had too much volume. I couldn't wait to get another haircut. I normally get one every 4-6 weeks and I could barely stand this one a month after. On top of that, I found it to be VERY overpriced for what I got - about $75 all in. Not worth it in the least. Again, I know I'm not their target audience, but I hope this review helps someone if they're on the fence. read more

I've never written a review on yelp ever, but after my experience here, I had to. If you do not speak Japanese, make sure whoever is cutting your hair is proficient at English and understands EXACTLY what you want. I'm a guy with fairly long hair and just wanted a bit of length off, even showed a picture. After the stylist looked at it, she never looked for reference again. She ended up cutting my hair to less than half an inch, completely different than what the picture was or what I asked for. My hair went from around 5 inches to less than half an inch... despite showing her exactly what I wanted. If you are going to be paying $45, you'd best be looking elsewhere that will cut your hair EXACTLY the way you want it! read more

This review is not about the experience but about the result of my hair. (The experience was excellent, they were really friendly etc.) So, I went in to get full head highlights and I left feeling very happy with my results, until 2 weeks later when my mom asked me why the back of my head had stripes like a 'zebra' and asked if this was intentional. Of course, I didn't know what she meant until I used a mirror to look at the back of my head. There are no vertical ( normal) highlights covering the back root growth of my head but horizontal stripes! OMG I've been walking around with stripes on my head this whole time and now I'm embarrassed to walk around outside. This is a warning if you want to get highlights. Maybe it was just my hairstylist idk, either way, I'm stuck looking like a zebra from the back :)))))))))) read more

I should start by saying that I am really protective and vain and picky about my hair. It takes me a long time to build up trust with a stylist. This probably makes me a big pain in the butt as a client, which I feel bad about, but it is what it is. I have been looking for a new place for a blowout. I found Kamiya online, and used their online booking service to schedule an appointment. This is a super convenient service, because I was able to book an appointment last minute, even though the salon was closed. I have had terrible luck with blowouts in other salons. I like big, bouncy hair that isn't sleek or flat ironed. My stylist, Yuki, was amazing! She took a lot of time before the shampoo to look at my hair's texture and listen to what I had in mind. This made me feel at ease right away. The shampoo itself was EPIC, one of the best I have ever had. Yuki took a lot of care to avoid splashing my face. My hair had been recently coloured and is very prone to tangling, but there were no problems because her technique was very thorough without being rough. The scalp massage was really relaxing. I was very, very happy with the blowout. Again, Yuki was very thorough and careful (no burnt hair smell from the curling iron, or aggressive pulling with the brush, as I have experienced elsewhere). My hair was swingy and bouncy and perfect. It still looked great the next day, even after a night out. Besides Yuki's excellent skill as a stylist, the other thing I noticed about Kamiya was how friendly everyone was. All of the staff smiled at me, even the ones who weren't working with me. The salon has a really nice, friendly vibe to it. I am pretty tired of Toronto salons that offer cold, snotty, or indifferent customer service. This was a pleasant change! The total cost was around $42 with taxes and a 20% tip, which is really reasonable for such excellent service. Kamiya definitely won this picky girl's heart in just one visit. read more

A short hair second level girl stylist is very rude. I asked her what is the price for my length of hair to get a cut and color. She was very impatient tell me: "can I talk to you later?" Then she spoke Japanese with the other stylist and laughed about it. What was really so funny about it?! Horrible customer service in this location! Just rude! My friend spent $200 for color and cut. I dyed my hair and the color was lavender-ash, I think. I really like it! Also, Masa was very nice. He understood my request and preferences completely. The total cost was $96 + tip. I hope that it was a little more reasonable tho... This is why my review is not full. Also, I saw some reviews that said like "it was totally different from my order." I guess they should show the stylist some pics that are close to the hair style that they want, then explain the all details of your ideals. I always show pics, tell my likes and dislikes, and say I wanna keep the good color as much as possible to the hair stylist. So I've never gotten a bad hair style at Japanese hair salons. First time trying this place, and will probably go back for a second visit next month. The online booking system was okay, but the stylist wasn't listed in their staff list, so you can't really tell if they are experienced if you check online. Made the appointment and got there few minutes early, but the last customers were just finishing up and I was asked to wait for 20 to 30 minutes. (***) Finally haircut time starts for me, and the hair wash was great. I like the chair they use, it's a chair, not a bed, so you sitting there with you legs up (like a recliner? A La-Z-boy?) And the best part is where you neck goes, it's well supported and not like some place that you just lay there without neck-support. As I always would let the stylist do their thing, because it's just the way it should be done. And because I don't speak Japanese, so when Mari (stylist) asked me how I like it, I asked her to decide. Turns out great, I liked it, but as usual I felt asleep again... (***) when I got back to the store and at the end of my haircut, she did apologize about making me wait for my appointment, which is fine. The thing is that there are no free parking for the store and paid parking near-by are set with 30 minutes minimum, so be prepared to paid for extra time for your appointments. read more

Good experience overall. The online booking system was very easy to navigate. It lists out the services and the respective prices. My hairdresser was easy to dealt with and quite pleasant. However English was not perfect and there was a bit of a language barrier. I'm pleased with my haircut though. The price was $35 for a stylist. Very happy with my roots touch up & haircut. I made an online appointment but was a little late because I couldn't find the shop (it's on the second floor with a small sign on the first floor). I got seated and started right away. Suzu worked on my hair and she was excellent! So caring about my wants and made sure the colour and length was to my liking. I would rate a 0/5 if there is one. First of all, I don't even know why I got a Chinese dude in a Japanese hair salon. Second, this guy spent 25 minutes of blow drying my hair and cut my hair carelessly for like 10 minutes. So basically I paid 60 bucks for a haircut that Only worth of 20 bucks. If you think I'm over exaggerating, regardless the hair technique, I have paid 30 bucks for drying my hair. This is my first and last time coming to this location. The downtown one does a better job. Ps. I am really wondering how is this guy hired in the first place. Stay away from him. I'm serious. Oh btw he was late himself for like 6-8 minutes. read more

Just came back from Kamiya uptown and had am amazing haircut by Haruna. I've been to the downtown location and had a great experience so I thought I'd go uptown to give it a try. Haruna was patient, and listened to what I wanted to get done. I showed her pictures and told her I wanted a textured , blunt cut with lower layers and she delivered exactly that. It's rare that a stylist gives you exactly what you asked for! I would definitely go back again for Haruna and probably get my hair coloured too. read more

I had a hard time finding a review for Erika, so I figured I'd leave one! She was amazing! She was a good listener and understood my request. She was ready even before my reserved time. She not only did good job, but was very friendly. I trusted her more because she was easy to talk to. Even though my request is probably dull as it was just a trim/reshaping, she didn't lose interest! She even helped put my jacket on when she was finished, which was a nice touch. I booked a last minute appointment here at Kamiya's. The phone call went very smoothly, no issues what so ever. They had Yuri and Masa available but I didn't mind who it was. I was booked with Masa for women's haircut. I arrived about 10 minutes early, the receptionist was very nice and ushered me to sit and wait until Masa had finished with his client and took my jacket immediately. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting, it was moderately busy (about 5 or 6/8ish chairs were filled up) and every hair dresser was either very concentrated or having pleasant conversation with their clients. Their main demographic seemed to be Asian. As I sat I had several glances from the hair stylists which kind of made me feel awkward but it was no big deal. When Masa was finished, he introduced himself as my stylist. He had a Japanese accent which was slightly difficult to understand but not unbearable. The receptionist washed my hair; I have never had my hair washed before so I was kind of tense aha. It was a pleasant experience though. After I sat in the chair, he asked about what I had in mind/if I had any images. I showed him the several images I brought (low layers) and asked to cut my hair from lower waist level to mid chest. He suggested to "lighten" my hair (meaning thin it/remove weight) and I went with his suggestion. During the cut itself, he was VERY VERY precise (I was surprised) and asked for my approval before he made big cuts. He worked in very thin sections and made sure there were no mistakes. There was no conversation besides my nods agreeing that it was good. I didn't mind that, I wasn't much of a talker anyways. The haircut took about an hour and it came out amazing. It was exactly like the picture I showed. I thought that if he removed weight that it would look thinner but it had that same thickness but w/o the weight. I was very happy about my haircut and couldn't stop smiling because I liked it so much. The total came out to be $~37 and I gave a generous tip as well. I would definitely come here again in the future. TL;DR - Booking: Appointment only. I booked via phone call (answered right away). No issues - Reception: Warm and friendly. Didn't wait too long. - Hairstylist: Masa. Decent English, very precise haircuts, pleasant to work with. - Shampoo + Conditioner: Comfortable chairs. Used the brand VERB I believe. This place was recommended by a friend of mine, I used to go Maya in DT, but since this place is super close to where I live so I decided to give it a try. Japanese people are always very nice and are good at services, but today, when I was about finishing my haircut, I was talking to my hairdresser and deciding if there is anything else I want to do about my hair, my hair dresser could not wait and telling me she had another client coming in, so she had to help him first. She asked me if I could wait, I said okay. She walked away and made me waiting at my chair. I waited for 20 mins and I finally asked how long am I supposed to wait? The reception lady told me as soon as my hairdresser finishing help another client, she would help me. She was not sure how long I should wait. Then I was asking if another male hairdresser could help me, the guy said "No, I have client coming in" I felt a bit upset so i kept waiting. Few minutes later, my hairdresser stopped cutting another client's hair and came to me said she would do my hair first. I told her just make my hair a bit thinner, that's it. Then I'm done. I mean when I go to other places, regardless if the hairdresser has later appointment, they will usually wait to finish the current client and then help others. I don't like the fact that while I was making decision how I want to get my hair done, the hairdresser told she could not wait to help another client. And in the end, she just rushing through the haircut cuz she had to go back to her Japanese client. This made me feel uncomfortable. read more

I visit Kamiya twice a year to get my hair cut by Kaoko ($50+tax). The price is a little high if you compare it to others but it's reasonable for this area. Kaoko is extremely attentive and always asks for my opinion before cutting major parts of my hair. She also gives constructive advice for hair care and teaches you how to use certain tools to create any look. Being someone that doesn't really like to chat with their hair dresser Kaoko is pretty timid herself and I kind of enjoyed the silence. I can't comment on any hair dye services but it's alright for a regular womens haircut. People there are generally quite friendly and I don't really have any major complaints. I usually go in the evening on a weekday so the wait times are minimal. read more

The stylist was nice and sweet, however I don't think she fully understood what I wanted since the finished haircut doesn't look quite like the picture I showed to her.
