My hair inspiration was an ash blond balayage. What I got was an uneven, brassy tiger (my worst nightmare) and my already thin hair is now super thinned out because of my stylist, Sonny's attempt to fix the botched up colouring. Just take a look at the pictures. I'm not the type to be picky about my hair as long as it looks somewhat similar to a picture I show, but WOW this is surprisingly the worst experience I've had at a hair salon despite the decent reviews. Also have to mention how Yin managed to give me attitude despite not even being my stylist. She seems nice to clients she knows, but not sure about new clients! She complained in front of me to my stylist about the price he was charging for such an awful job, then checked me out. She took my money, took forever to fork out change, then just takes it back without confirming if it was a tip I was leaving first. Not a word at all to me during this entire time. Customer service? I think not! I was charged $185 in exchange for such an atrocious job and had originally scheduled a second appointment to touch up the roots; however, after seeing my own pictures, I simply cannot return. Read about this place on yelp and decided to give it a try. Didn't make an appointment but then again, I didn't need to wait that long so it's ok! The people that work here are really nice and the guy at the front took my coat for me and welcomed me to sit and wait. The girl that cut my hair was yin, and she was super friendly. I don't like washing my hair at hair places and wasting the few extra bucks, especially when my hair is already clean.. usually when places find out that they're not scamming you out of your few extra dollars for a mediocre hair wash, the stylists get nasty and will say stuff like "oh, it'd be easier if you washed your hair" or some petty shit like that. Yin did not at all and sat me in the chair as soon as I said I didn't need to, since I had washed my hair that morning already. I showed her a few reference pics of what I wanted, and she literally gave it to me in front of my eyes. Trimmed off all my dead ends and gave me longer hair in the front and shorter in the back. She even complimented my hair colour, which I did at home. (SO many places love ripping on you for your hair style/colour, especially if they weren't the ones to do it) The final result was a little choppy in the end (could've had more layers) but I liked it. I originally came to this salon based on all the rave Yelp reviews. Wow was I surprised by the end result. Keep in mind I have a regular hair stylist that I always go to but as I was in a rush to find a stylist near Markham at the time I decided to try Hair Artzy out. I requested to have my hair cut, thinned, and maybe add more style to my hair with some bangs. The lady ended up cutting my hair in weird layers and my entire head of hair ended up being completely different lengths by the end of the cut. The bangs were quite a mess - this is also my fault though because my usual stylist would refuse to let me get bangs because it did not fit my face style. One of the times where my rebellion completely failed me I guess. But overall, I walked out the salon with zig zagged hair... Ok I don't even live in the Toronto area. I come to visit and always get my hair done by Ricky! My friend recommended me to him and she still gets her hair cut here whenever she's visiting from NY too. I've been coming here for about 4 years now.I've gotten 1 hair cut, 1 formal updos and 3 haircuts and digital perms. After the first time Ricky cut my blunt bangs, my aunt and cousins started going there. At this point, I believe he has cut hair for all my cousins, my aunt, my mom and my cousin's kids. That's 3 generations. Talk about the power of referrals! Ricky knows the current styles in Asia, how to not overdo or under-do anything, gives great, customized recommendations, does the best bangs I've ever seen and great layers, updos and digital perms! He especially does the best blunt bangs. I actually just gave up getting them elsewhere and just save it for my trips to Toronto. I made an appointment here based on two positive Yelp reviews. I was in Toronto on vacation and made the drive to Markham, specifically for a hair cut and digital perm. I saw Ricky, who was very nice and professional. He took his time to cut my hair, (which was nice to feel he was not rushing or being hasty) and made slight changes to improve my style and also explained how it will help. He was very knowledgable and gave me good tips on styling my hair and caring for my digital perm. He recommended proper products to use, but didn't try to push selling them from the salon. $160 for both the cut and perm, he also gave good local restaurant recommendations. The salon was clean and modern and there seemed to be a steady flow of customers for the time I was there. I would definitely return. Cash or debit accepted. read more

I went in without an appointment this Sunday and there were very little people there so I got a chair immediately, I went from my hair passing my chest to up to my neck. I got a side-shave and used a photo for reference. Yin was my stylist and she was very nice, I feel bad for her because I'm a very ticklish person and while she was shaving my head I would jolt and scare her. The haircut she gave me wasn't exactly like the picture, but it wasn't bad. She put a little twist on it, maybe her style, it seemed like it. Overall I think the cut was great except for the fact that it didn't look as close to the picture as I wanted it to be, but it's still a great cut :) Edit: After looking in the mirror for a couple of minutes I realized there was one little batch of hair that she didn't shave. The picture showed the shaved part to go diagonal and end once it reached the other side of the head's nape. But Yin cut my hair straight and left the little batch on the right side of my head. The shaved part was the part I was the most excited about, since it was a new thing for me, but it didn't come out as close to as I wanted it to. The girl in the photo had her undercut faded, but Yin cut my hair bluntly. I wanted feathered ends but she left them blunt. I can fix it myself but after further examination I wouldn't come back here. She didn't use the chair properly, ergonomics girl! She spread her legs apart to go further down and bent her back to cut my hair. The chair goes up so they don't have to do that, but that's fine since the cut still came out great enough for me to fix it a little and style it. read more

This was my first time going to this salon after seeing pretty good reviews on Yelp. I made an appointment for 1 PM on a Sunday with any stylist available. I got to the salon 5 minutes early and was greeted by the owner who told me to wait and take a seat. The guy who was going to be cutting my hair was with another customer so I waited. He didn't finish until 20 minutes later. I didn't really mind waiting as it showed that he takes his time with his customers. My stylist's name was Sam. He listened to what I told him I wanted and was really nice, making small talk while he was cutting. I was pleased with the final cut, which is rare and will be returning again! Called on a Sunday morning and made appt for the same day at 3:30. I ended up going with a friend who also wanted a hair cut and they were very nice and was able to accomodate her as well. I have very long here and I want to do a shoulder length cut that's quite drastic from what I'm used to. I showed some pictures to help explain what I want the end result to be. Raymond was my stylist and after listening to what I want, he gave me a few advices before proceeding with the cut. He explained that the end will flair out and that it would look better with non-collar shirts. I really appreciate that he took the time to make sure I'm aware of these things. I came here for dye highlights the whole 10 yards. Ricky was the one that helped me out. I was asking for a a lot all in one sitting. I specifically wanted it a lighter with a lot of dimensions. I showed Ricky what I wanted and that was it. He did it just the way I wanted it. It did take a while but I am very pleased. The shampoo part was a bonus! The chairs were very comfortable so I didn't have any strain on my neck or anything like that! Even after he finished colouring my hair he recommended a trim so the dimensions of my hair can shine through! I agreed and he didn't rush the hair cut. Loved the entire experience. This place will become my usual after having my hair dyed and cut here. The people are friendly, place is clean and they do a good job. I had Sonny as my hair stylist and he was great. He was attentive, very detailed, would tell you exactly how he's going to cut your hair and would give you suggestions on how to style it. I recommended my sister to get her haircut there. Sonny wasn't working on the Wednesday that she had planned to go so she went with a hairstylist named Sam. She told me she had a positive experience, so I think overall, this place is awesome. Location: The address on Yelp is correct, but the map location is wrong. Hair Artzy is located by HWY 7 and WARDEN (not Woodbine). Second light west of Warden (Town Square Blvd) in that same plaza at the HSBC. It's pretty easy to find once you're inside the plaza. It's in the corner across from the HSBC. Quality and Price: I called ahead to book an appointment for a women's cut only with no wash (on a Saturday afternoon). There was no wait when I arrived. I didn't want to specify any stylist to see what Hair Artzy had to offer in terms of skill and service across the board. All staff speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Their English is okay, but it was hard to understand especially with the blowdrier going. I had really long hair (down to my waist) and with no wash, the total was $27 (plus tip, I ended up paying $31). For your typical Asian place, it's a little pricey, but still way better than what you'd pay for at a mall. I am pretty happy with my cut, although I was pretty lax about what I wanted. - medium to long length - low maintenance - no bangs - for reference, my hair is dry and medium to fine. Sonny was my stylist and I kind of just told him I didn't have a clear idea, it just had to meet my 3 criteria. My appointment was at 3pm and I was out by 4:15. Service: When I arrived, I was greeted and my coat was hung up and I was offered a robe. However, I wasn't asked what I wanted. I had to speak up to remind them I only wanted cut (no wash) as they were beginning to lead me to the basin. I also wasn't asked about any styles or ideas I had in mind, so I had to speak up again before the cut started to make sure that my criteria was heard. I had washed my hair before coming as well, and Sonny was kind enough to blow dry the rest of it out for me. I really like that Sonny talked to me about my hair. He said it wasn't too thin, but it was dry. Said I was losing hair in a few particular places more than most and pointed them out to me. He also gave me advice about it (don't let it grow out too long, since brushing will pull it out) and put in a little Moroccan oil at the end to help tame my frizz and to add a little sheen. Sonny was with me the entire time and wasn't working between clients. Overall: My experience at Hair Artzy went well. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars. My stylist Sonny spent a long time cutting my hair and was very friendly. He definitely took his time- the cut lasted 2 hours. Unfortunately, the results were mediocre. He also did not really spend much time at the beginning consulting me about my hair. He took one look at my hair (and probably thought "Oh no it curls!") before asking the assistant to wash and blow dry it straight before cutting. Had he taken the time to talk to me, he would know that I do not wear my hair straight, ever, so cutting it straight and dry would not give desirable results. After my hair was "straight" he asked me what kind of cut I wanted, and it was too late. All I could tell him was how long and describe the bangs and layers. In addition my hair is a nightmare to straighten, and even after half an hour of intense blowdrying, my hair straight to puff up and curl, which may be why the haircut itself took so long. Wanted a short hair cut but didn't have a regular hairstylist. Hermes was professional, kind, and patient as my hairstylist. He seems knowledgable as I consulted him on how it would look if I were to cut my hair short. He understood my worry as I went from chest length hair to mid-ear short with an undercut (which I've never gotten it that short before). As an Asian with soft and light hair, cutting it short was a dangerous aspect. There are 2 things Yin does not understand: 1) Customer service 2) How to cut short hair I am not one to write bad reviews but the experience I had with Yin at Hair Artzy was the worst I've had at a hair salon in 10 years! (I have a pixie and cut my short hair every 3 weeks and try different salons all the time). I went in about half an hour late (which I was very apologetic for) and waited patiently for Yin who was cutting another female's hair. She seemed very pleasant, as most people have described her on Yelp, however I was in for a horrible surprise. When it was my turn, she asked me what I wanted and I showed her a photo on my phone. She explained that the girl's hair in the photo was different from my hair as it was much thinner, and would not be able to cut it exactly the same. I was fine with that. (However, I have shown this photo to the past 5 hair salons I've cut my hair at and I've never had a problem). She began cutting, and 15 minutes in, I ran my hand through my hair to feel the progress and she rudely exclaimed "I'm not finished yet, your hair is very hard to cut!" I said "Okay, sorry!" After cutting for a little longer, I asked if she could please cut a little shorter like in the photo. Again, in the worst tone exclaimed "The photo is EXTREMELY DIFFERENT from WHAT YOU ARE ASKING ME" and I said, "Okay, sorry, please just cut it the way you think will be best". Finally, after finishing, she probed me to get up to rinse, and I asked if she was done. She said yes, however I still felt my hair was too thick and hoped to thin it out more. This was the worst idea. She said "Fine!" and took the scissors and started hacking away at my already very short hair. I TRULY 100% believe that she purposefully cut my hair as short as possible in such a way that she knew would look AWFUL. At this point, I could not speak and was on the verge of crying. She said "Oh- is it still too long? Or now is it too short?" in a mocking tone. I quietly muttered that it was a bit too short and could not fathom her terrible manner. Fast forward to when I proceeded to pay, and just my luck, their debit machine was not working. She looked at me as if it was my fault that my card was not approved and I insisted that I just used my card yesterday. We tried again, and she practically accused me as if it was my fault the machine still did not work. She walked away (as I guess she could not deal with me anymore) and the man in charge took over. (Perhaps Ricky?) He was much more sincere and apologetic. Essentially, I have never had a haircutter who was as TERRIBLE AND CRUEL as Yin. I really do not understand the other reviewers on here that say she was professional or attentive, because I got neither. I am graduating in 2 days and start work in 2 weeks, and have to find a way to cover my hair until it grows back. I have never been more upset and disappointed. Came here for a quick SIMPLE blow dry on the weekend and left unsatisfied. Portions of my hair in the back was left curly, and my hairdresser couldn't understand exactly what I wanted. New to the Scarborough / Markham area and wanted to find a salon that knows Asian hair, actually give nice haircuts and not too expensive. Seeing the consistent 4-5 stars from fellow Yelpers here, I decided to give this place a try. Went on a weekday afternoon with no appointment. The owner pleasantly greeted me. He and another lady stylist was in with customers. He asked if I had a regular stylist. I said no. Although many people had mentioned Ricky, I thought I'd just be spontaneous and go with anyone, since it sounds like other stylists are good too. The lady stylist finished her customer and took me in. Her name is Yin and she was very friendly and got a nice down to earth vibe. Yin took a couple of minutes to discuss with me how I would like my hair cut; expected length, layering, and most importantly, the side bangs. She recommended the best way to cut my bangs, so my forehead/face won't look so wide. I looked a bit lost with the technicality so she used pictures from hair magazines to confirm my preferences. Hair wash: Like 1 reviewer stated, the chair was comfortable because you're lying down and not straining your neck. During hair wash and each time I need to rinse my hair out, Yin asked if the water temperature was comfortable. She applied just the right amount of pressure to rub and clean my hair, not too rough and not too soft. Hair cut: Yin cut with scissors which made me very happy because razor cuts always make my layers too choppy and frizzy. She worked my hair with the moves of an expert with great confident and precision. After hair cut, she double checked which hair treatment I was interested in; the $30 or $60 one. Since I felt my hair was in desperate need for moisture, I took a chance with the $60 option. It was a 4 step process with a take-home follow-up conditioner. The scents is certainly nice. Hope the moisturizing effect lasts longer than the cheaper treatments I've had in the past. I also like the hair steaming machine they got. The steamer has an attachment like an extended shower cap that fits neatly over your hair and fastened by drawstring so that water doesn't drip down your forehead and face. Never seen these in the "affordable" salons I've been going to :) Décor is clean and 'artzy'. I do like that they didn't plastered dated hairstyle pictures from the 90's or something like a lot of other places would :) Lots of magazines, HK tabloids I think. Jazz music from the radio. Overall, I think my stylist Yin was very professional, attentive, and I felt she really cared to give me a nice satisfactory haircut. The haircut service is definitely great for $30. She also does speak fluent Cantonese, English and Mandarin. I would come back again. Maybe next time for hair colouring or even straight perm when necessary. read more

*Bad experience alert* I saw Yin for a trim. My bangs are growing out as I planned and I asked for a simple trim of my length. I explained my goal was to grow out my hair which was hard because my hair grows very slowly and because my hair is color damaged so it is prone to breakage. I explicitly stated that I wanted Yin to clean up the bottom, removing no more than 3/4". I said I wanted it cut straight across and definitely not layered bc layering just exacerbates the breakage and will make my length even thinner and shitty looking. Yin cut off the requested 3/4" but then she started feathering the ends by holding the hair out from my head and trimming (essentially making it slightly layered on tech bottom, instead of blunt). I should have stopped her but then I assumed she know what she was doing. Then she blow dried my hair and did more trimming (taking off more length). She seems to be a perfectionist which is applaudable but not when length is concerned. Lastly and the reason I am writing a review at 4am out of anger, is that she had to gall to ignore my repeated request of no layers and she started cutting long layers in my precious, length which I have been growing no joke for 5 years. At first I thought I was seeing things but then when she did a second long cut, I (way too nicely) reminded her about no layers. She giggled and replied that she just wanted to cut layers because they would look nice. She knew darn well that I didn't want layers but she decided to cut them anyway. I told her not to cut any more layers. Now there are two effing layers cut in to one side of my head which no doubt makes me hair look thinner. Grrrrr! She broke the cardinal rule as a stylist- do not cut hair that the customer explicitly stated shouldn't be cut. She cut off about 2 years worth of length and honestly how the hell am I supposed to get that back?? I have no idea why I left her a tip. I was in shock at the time and I'm way too nice and didn't want to offend her. I'm so angry that I cannot sleep. I will never return to this salon. read more

Great service! After reading reviews, I asked for Ricky and was not disappointed! I went in for a digital perm and was early and was taken immediately for a wash and cut. I let Ricky make the decisions on how to cut my hair and he added lots of volume to the crown and took his time. The digital perm was a new experience for me and I had very loose curls, my hair had the natural, wet wavy look. I think there would've been more difference if I had longer hair but I am still pleased with it. It's not what you'd get through a curling iron but I like the natural look. Ricky was very patient, informative, and considerate. I definitely will go back for another perm - this time with tighter curls. I decided to give Hair Artzy a try yesterday for a haircut and highlights based on Yelp reviews and I was very pleased with the results! Hermes was wonderful! I didn't have a particular hair style or highlight colour in mind, so he gave me his advice based on my wanting something low maintenance but funky. I was very happy with the results; best haircut I've had in a long time! He skillfully cut my hair, being very careful yet still quick, and was meticulous about the placing of the highlights on my head. The colour was rich and vibrant, just as I had hoped. The price was very reasonable; in the past, I had paid double what he charged for the same services at a salon in Markville Mall. After finally being able to find a stylist i loved who dyed my hair, she moved to Vancouver. I have been scared to find another hair stylist to cut my hair as I've been through horror stylists. I decided to come here because of the great yelp reviews and that it is very close to my home. I woke up in the morning and called for an appointment and went right away. I didn't mind what stylist i got and i ended up with Sam. He was very patient with me and was clearly very knowledgeable in his field. I washed my hair right before and he asked if he could wet it. He ended up putting conditioner in my hair without charge which i was afraid he was going to without letting me know. I showed him a picture i wanted which was the style i had currently had but just wanted a trim and he did just that. He gave me tips along the way and giving recommendations. He took his time with my suggestions that took 1 hour. He was very easy to talk to and was very kind to me. I would 100% recommend Sam. read more

And I wanted to get a trim and cut my bangs a little the guy I got he totally screwed up my bangs I told him i didn't part my hair in the middle and he didn't listen and cut it from parting it in the middle. I asked for Ricky due to the review below me... and I have no regrets. Firstly, the salon is easily accessible by viva transit..and the salon itself is 'artzy' nice/cool looking.. I liked the wall color, mirrors and decor... It is small but not small to make you claustrophobic ... it's nice and small enough to make you feel you're not in a haircut chain store where they rush your haircut... Anyways... the cut I was going for was drastic for me, I went for a side shave or 'undercut' and wanted my 'wavy' hair more curly/ messy looking...so I went for a perm on the other half side of my head...I have flat hair and told him I wanted more volume at my crown , so he also added layers to take off the weight from weighing down my hair... I couldn't be more happy with it ... although now I think I shouldn't have shaved that much since I'm really cold now on that side of my head.... Ricky was cool, he didn't rush and took his time , I had faith in him lol because of what others here have said about him... he knew what he was doing and my perm turned out good unlike the other 2 places I had gotten perms before... it actually stays curly the next day without having to wash my hair and put product in (failed digital perm before)... though it is not perfect distinct curls... just enough to notice 'curly/mess' hair that I wanted..not exactly the curls i was going for, I wanted more so tight ringlets to loose..but it was good enough for me .. I can define them more with a curling iron... On the bonus side , it was cheaper then I expected, thankfully. I feel like this is my salon now, and I have my own hair dresser to go to now. EDIT:: About the perm.. even though it's one of the better perms I got comparing to other places.. I noticed after I got home about a 3-4 chunks of strands were straight after I'd wash my hair :/ ... no good for that UPDATE: I decided to grow out my 'undercut' (side shaved part) ...since it was getting too high maintenance to keep up with (needed to buzz it every 2 weeks or less) .. .. so now I went for an asymmetrical bob (switched my part, so shaved part is covered) ...initially i wasn't really feeling it, because first off my hair was now straight .. (i hate straight hair on me) ... but after a while I got use to it... ( at least it was a 'bob' and therefore short , since I also loathe long hair on me)...anyway NOW i realize that I actually like the cut, and it's still unique-artzy looking so I don't feel/ look so 'normal' cookie cutter-like.. he cut it pretty well and took time to style it ...s'all good. I like this cut! for straight hair i would like this as my 'signature' style... Like everyone else, I came here because of the reviews. I live in Markham and I've tried HK Hair Design, JJ Hair Salon, and recently even tried the higher-rated Spellbound hair salon in First Markham Place. None of these could compare. I asked for Ricky and I was lucky because I went on a weekday and he only had one customer. He knew right away what the problem with my hair was, made immediate suggestions, and really took the time with my haircut. He gave me a refreshing, light, layered haircut which got rid of my heavy-hair look. I think my haircut took 2 hours in total (inc. waiting), but I was deeply satisfied with the result. The price was exactly $30 for the haircut. The assistant was also very attentive, although she was too gentle with the wash. I would've given this a 5-star, however during my whole haircut they had a fan blowing my own cut-off hair into my face/nostrils so it was uncomfortable. The seat was uncomfortable as well (but this could've been due to the fact that I was sitting for 2 hours straight). Overall I would recommend this place. I would get Ricky to cut my hair again. I only had experience at hair salons in sketchy and cheap Asian places so going to Hair Artzy, a more professional hair salon, was a new experience for me. Although it took nearly 6 hours (I have fairly thick asian hair), Sonny was able to give me a beautiful, all-around rose gold/copper-y dyed hair with highlights. He was very considerate and patient with the entire process, and since I'm not the best with hair up-keeping, Sonny gave me lots of tips on shampoo-ing and maintaining healthy hair without being judgemental or crude about it. He was also very flexible in terms of pricing (I had a slightly limiting budget) and was just a generally nice and professional person that I really trust with my hair now. Salon is a hidden gem tucked in where the Paint Lounge use to be. Yin is very attentive and was giving a lot of tips in handling my hair and finding the right style for my face. I came here for a digital perm and as per the previous reviews I requested for Ricky. He did take his time and gave me a nice perm. I was there for about 5 hours. I definitely didn't expect it to take that long. My hair wash and rinse was very thorough, which is a definite plus. Personally I wished there was more volume. I asked for volume at the roots and he didn't set the rods on the scalp. They were rolled very loosely off scalp and I know that's how the typical digital perm is set, but I was hoping it would be done with volume. As a former hairstylist I understand the concept of how a perm should be wrapped to achieve that. Also, since the Perm solution was applied almost to the scalp, I was expecting the neutralizer to be applied there as well, but it was not. As for the styling it wasn't done to my liking, but that's no big deal. He's great at doing haircuts, though I'm not too sure how comfortable he is with doing perms and styling of the perm. It turned out fine and my hair is very healthy. I'm not sure I would sit for 5 hours again though. There are definitely faster ways to do a digital perm and have it turn out the same healthy way. I would recommend coming here. The work is on par with what I expect as a stylist. read more

I had been searching for a salon that could do a good job with my thick straight Asian hair and I think I have finally found it! My stylist was Yin and when I walked in I asked her for suggestions on what to do with my hair, which was driving me crazy as I was growing it out and could not decide exactly what kind of style I wanted it to have. She immediately showed me three options of which she felt one was the best and I agreed so we went forward with the cut. The end result looked great and was exactly what I was looking for (but didn't realize it). Best of all, the cost of the cut was a lot less than what I typically pay at a nice salon. And I love the hair wash station! You get to lie down instead of sit, so your neck doesn't need to strain when you put it over the sink. Genius! I decided to go to Hair artzy based on a few reviews I found online. I haven't done anything with my hair in a long time as its been pretty damaged and I've been growing it in. I have naturally slow growing baby fine hair and am always nervous about going to any hair salon. When I first walked in, Patrick greeted me even though he was with a client. He told me to have a seat and would get somebody to help me as soon a possible. I waited no more than 10 minutes when Patrick came and got me. I explained that I wanted a sleek and sexy blowdry. He said sure no problem. He gave me the best shampoo ever and as he was blowdrying my hair, he was patient and professional and gave me many good tips on how I can maintain good hair health. I had number of different hair styles by Patrick in the past 10 years but I usually like to keep my hair long and layered. It was my first visit and Ricky styled my hair the way I liked it. I showed him a picture in a magazine and he cut it the way it was. My last hair cut was at Morph hair design, and the guy cut my hair the way he knew how and not how I wanted it to be. So I never went back after my first visit. read more
