I tried many many different hair salons across Scarborough/Markham/North York area. Yet, I always find myself stumbling back to Salon de Elephant. I often request Karen to give me something where I can manage with minimum effort (i.e. no hair products) and she always delivers. I wear hats, headphones, and play plenty of sports, so I value time-spent-on-hair-to-handsome-hair ratio greatly. Detail description: When you first walk into the Salon, it really feels like you've walked into a living space. I probably will design my house/apartment to look like Salon de Elephant in the near future. While most salons are cramped and loud, SdE generates a classy Southern Tennessee bar (or coffee-shop-esqued, for those who don't drink) feeling. The book shelves with Karen's handpicked selections welcome the bookworms while the up-to-date thick-ass magazines can easily trick you into picking them up mindlessly. The coffee, ever so dark, requires no sugar nor milk, just the way it should be. When a hair salon doesn't smell like a hair salon but like a cabin in the Banff Park, it's often a good sign that some attention is put into keeping the life in lifestyle. SdE staffs also cares about their music. Their mixtapes have some good jams that really hit the spot. One could ask them to add in a song or two and it will appear the next time, but don't quote me on it. In conclusion, the experience of SdE makes you feel like your vegan hipster friend will like it too. Let's talk about the haircut: I once asked Karen if I can get a sick fade. I got a fade so fly my cool black friend, Tyron, asked me where I got it from, no jokes. I usually get 5 short/simple haircuts for every whatever-is-trending-at-the-time haircut. For sure the trending haircuts get attention from the ladies but I would like to emphasize that short/simple/utilitarian is the way to go. Ask Karen for the Util#48. It's the timeless one that really conveys the message, "I care about my hair, I hate hair products, I just want to look good without trying." Fuck it, book an appointment right now, for you or for your boyfriend, and ask for Karen's Util#48. Honestly, the way she looks at my hair while she cuts them is the same look when Francis Mallmann cooks in the wild. It's freedom, it's attention, it's instinct, it's love. Once there wasn't that many people in the salon and Karen took her time to cut my hair. I think a documentary should be filmed there on the spot. I came here for a women's cut by a stylist Sudien. I got a basic hair cut-- trimmed 2 inches, and got long layers. The salon is nicely decorated and clean. They greeted me right away, took my jacket, and offered me a something from the drink menu (not free). They even gave me a hot towel for my hands. All of the stylists seemed friendly and knowledgable. I'm not too fussy when it comes to my hair so I was satisfied with the job Sudien did. He constantly checked with me to see if what he was doing was okay, which I appreciated. Sudien cut my hair, washed it, and gave me a decent scalp massage. Overall, I was happy with the experience. I have been to their old location, and am a huge fan. My main stylist is Nikki, because she is now familiar with what I like, but based on everyone's comments, they all seem good. You can't go wrong. Last time I wrote a review, I gave 4 stars for their service only based on cuts. However, I had since permed my hair twice as well. The first time I permed my hair, Nikki gave me some good advice about going with a cold perm as my hair was very dry. I highly appreciate that, because without me even having said so, I felt my hair was damaged and dry with years of using a straightener to style my hair. I went home very happy with the service. The next few days, I washed my hair but I couldn't recreate the curls Nikki created in the salon! I went back to her and she was very sweet to wash my hair and try to find out what the problem was. Turned out, I was not styling my hair properly after I washed it at home. Her advice was very helpful and she didn't charge me for it. I tipped her of course... I returned a half year later for a cut and perm again, and because she was familiar with my previous perm, she encouraged me to go for smaller curls this time, as they would hold up better after a wash. I was very happy she genuinely remembered what happened last time, and because my hair has a history of being difficult to manage, she spent most of her time working with me. Only down side? Just wished there was easily available parking! 5 stars without a doubt. read more

It was my first time here but it will also be the last time. The hair stylist showed me the pictures of the style that are similar to my hair. I choose couple styles I liked but she kept telling me about other styles. I was thinking the whole time why is she keep on telling me to chose other styles. I generally don't like layers for my hair because it won't look good on me. However, at the end she did it so my hair looked not flattering at all. I just finished getting my hair cut by Niki and I love it! I have had issues with other stylists (at other salons) cutting off too much of my hair in the past, but not with Niki. We spoke about what I wanted before doing anything, talking about length and cut and style. I asked her for some suggestions, and we decided on the cut together. She was very helpful. She double and triple and quadruple checked that I was ok with the length she was cutting, and didn't cut a millimetre more. When I decided to add layers at the last minute, after she had finished cutting my hair, she added them in with no problem. My hair looks fantastic, and is better than I could have imagined. I am very happy with this cut, the happiest I've been after getting a haircut, actually. I would definitely recommend her, and the salon. I've been going here for the past 3 years for cut and balayage plus highlight touch ups. I've had experiences with all the top stylists so 3 stars is just an overall review. Each of them really do have different styles in terms of highlighting or colouring hair. For me, Melissa was the best at blending balayage from roots to ends. Nikki was ok at blending, she used foils on my hair but I saw some unblended streaks under my hair when I got home. The last time I came, I booked with Satomi since I wanted to try someone new. She was really sweet and accommodating, however she didn't really do a good job at blending balayage at my roots. Some straight edges or pixelation looking highlights were very noticable once I saw it under different lighting. From a top stylist I expected more. I'm no expert but I think she needed to use her fingers to blend the bleach towards my roots and not just with the brush. I ended up going to another salon to fix this and it was just a matter of adding a darker toner to my roots and she blended it with her fingers towards my highlights. I'll probably still come back because they really do have nice staff but just read reviews before you pick your stylist. read more

I have been going to salon de elephant for about 4 years now, from their old location to their new location. I have always chose Karen as my appointed hairdresser, a friend of mine recommended her. She is very attentive, skilled, creative and full of ideas. She would often give me suggestions for changes, and recommend suitable hair products to protect my hair, but she is not forceful about it. In general, I am always satisfied with the results! I remember there was once where I was uncertain about the final product, and I was hesitant. I forgot whether it was the hair length or the style of it. She told me, go home and think about it, if you want to make a change, come back and I will fix it for you, free of charge. I've been to this salon twice, and it feels like heaven and hell. The first time I visited the salon is on Monday afternoon. It wasn't really crowded, and the whole place looks spacious and artistic. My hairdresser is Sudien, and after giving the hot towel and everything else, he starts giving me suggestion about my hairstyle. He was really helpful, polite, and patient with my questions, and I feel really comfortable throughout the hair cut. He also massaged my hair, taught me how to blow and style my hair correctly. Everything is excellent, and I thought I found a perfect salon. So I visited the second time on the weekend, and luckily my hairdresser is Sudien again. The salon is relatively busy compared to weekdays. However, when he start cutting my hair, it is not as comfortable as before. He was rushing to finish my hair, no massage during hair wash, and make me choke a few times when moving my head (when they try to get a right angle to cut). Everything feel so rush that it makes me frustrated, I could feel his impatience throughout the haircut. Do I get a good hairstyle? Yes, it was as good as before Do I get the pleasant experience ? Obviously it's not, highly disappointed Will I recommend people to visit? Yes, even I myself will go to the salon again due to the high quality haircut. I went for my first appointment the other day and, I think it's safe to say, it won't be my last! I had my appointment with one of the top stylists and she definitely knew what she was doing. I came in with crummy pictures of what I wanted and she was able to actually pull through with the style I requested. She was very respectable and professional throughout the entire session. What I appreciated the most was that she made sure to confirm with me before doing anything with my hair. I appreciated all her suggestions so I ended up saying "yes" every time. I've been to other big salons where the stylist just did what they pleased and ended up buzzing more than I originally proposed to them. Also, I found it interesting that the (probably) owner kept watching her and the other stylists very closely. I suppose this keeps them on their toes and he is making sure customers are having a good experience. I'm new to the area so I needed a salon I can feel comfortable going to and I think I've found it. Not only that, I'm already recommending my sister to give it a shot. Although the stylist was very accurate with the toner application and did a very good job with the color, I am not comfortable or happy with the all experience whatsoever. It really bother me that as "salón policies" I had by force to take the blow dry service which of course was not included in the price, so I ended up paying more money for a service I did NOT wanted, I asked her but she insisted that it was somehow mandatory. Second, I was pretty sure I wanted this change for good, but somehow she ended up convincing me to have a semi perm dye, which I hope it doesn't fade away in two weeks, Claiming that it wasn't the most recommendable thing to do, she walked me trough that and I'm so regretting have listened to her at the moment. Third but not least, they don't take credit cards only cash or debit, and they encourage you to pay with cash to avoid adding the taxes, I paid with debit so they charged it to me, but that really tells you something about the professionalism of the owner, making more money with this little tricks. I'll never coming back again, unless I had to make a formal complaint for the durability of the service, hopefully it will stay. Don't go! read more

Such a great experience! I wanted to go to a salon to get my box dye catastrophe sorted out and chose Salon de Elephant after looking at reviews, and I'm so glad I did! Their online booking system is really convenient and easy to use and I got a reply within the hour for an appointment the next day. Right when I got to the salon, I got a hot towel for my hands and my jacket was put away for me. Melissa was super nice and informative and we decided together to go for this beautiful pinkish red colour, and I'm super happy with how it turned out (it's very bright, but not unnaturally so.) I was originally just going to dye my entire head, but Melissa said that it might be better to go for balayage highlights instead since I don't have that much opportunity to come in to do touchups. And I'm SO glad I did that because it turned out so much better than I imagined! The entire experience was really enjoyable (complimentary beverages and snacks, comfy washing stations, relaxing head massage.) The price was definitely a bit pricey but worth every dollar in my opinion! I'll definitely be coming back the next time I decide to visit a salon :) read more

Even if I didn't live within 2 minutes of this place, it would be my go-to. The staff are all incredibly lovely--the politest bunch you'll ever meet, and I am always overwhelmed by the compliments I get after getting my hair coloured here. They know their stuff and are very accommodating. I recently got a fashion colour done during their last model night (during which the staff practice new cutting and colouring techniques on volunteer clients at a really good deal), which looked amazing. As fashion colours go, when I expressed concern about fading, they immediately booked me for a re-toning session on another model night. Karen is very caring and attentive but her colour correcting skill is awful. I had a reddish brown hair to begin with. I tell her that I want an ash brown colour but I don't want to bleach my hair so she recommended me to do a colour wash and add some subtle highlights. I said ok, as long as it gets rid of the "red" and the highlights are subtle. The result is TERRIBLE! A very light golden brown hair with very patchy yellowish highlights. HEART ATTACK! I tell her that it's not ash brown and I don't like it at all so she coloured it with a dark ashy brown this time. You know what? The result is "Greyish brown", with my pale skin, I look like an old woman. Even though it's been a year ago, I still couldn't forget what she does to my hair. I used to have even coloured brown hair but after she ruined my hair, it can never be healthy again, no matter what hair treatment I did. The bottom part of my hair is still brassy. read more
