I love my hair stylist, but the front desk staff is so incredibly rude. I felt pretty uncomfortable checking in and out (upstairs desk).

These guys are amazing. David and Jimmy have done wonders over the past 2 years improving my hair color, style and texture. Not cheap but worth paying more for. Valet parking is a plus and street parking is available if you go early. Results aside, the guys are great listeners who make the needed (frequent) visits a pleasure and something to Look forward to. read more

I went in to get an ombre, that's the first thing I said when I came in. What did I walk out with? A lot of highlights. They're nice but not at all what I had asked for. Nobody even asked me, how did you like it after I finished drying my own hair so I knew this is not the type of salon that cares. This review is just to warn prospective clients since the salon staff probably don't even read these comments. They really need to work on their customer listening skills. This salon is a factory churning out balayage after balayage, you'll get 45min max with a hair stylist. Just for comparison, usually when I got an ombre in NYC I would spend up to 3 hours because it takes several stages to get beautiful array of colors for an ombre. This place made me feel like I was in a conveyor belt. read more

The reception staff could not be friendlier or more helpful. Lauren does an amazing job with my color - I won't go to anyone else as long as she's in Chicago!! She's professional and has an amazing eye. She's also totally cool with my reading while my color sets. She sees me pull out my book and immediately holds out her hand for my cheaters so she can put these ingeneous plastic temple protectors over them in order to keep them dye-free. Nicole is a whiz with the scizz(ors). She's helped me grow my pixie to a bob, and we're now going for the shoulders. If she sees me more than once every 8 weeks I get a stern reminder that my hair has to be given more time to grow, so she's also saving me money. I sincerely appreciate that she has not taken our long-standing high school rivalry out on my locks. ;) I am ridiculously lazy when it comes to being a girl, and these two make it look like I'm really trying. It's not uncommon for me to be nursing a migraine, feeling lousy as hell only to have some stranger come up and compliment my hair. Better than Zomig. read more

I have had great haircuts here by Kylie and Jackie. I love that it is easy to get a last minute appointment, and the salon is no-nonsense, getting you in and out on time. However, the last time I had highlights done by Taylor, the color just seemed off. I thought it was the lighting in the salon, but after a few days, I could not live with mustard yellow streaks in my hair any longer, I went back and complained. I am pretty laid back, and have Never complained about my hair color before, but I expected more professionalism from Salon Buzz. Taylor insisted the color was fine, and brought another stylist over to back her up. I felt gang banged. My hair was very yellow blonde, not strawberry blonde like I had asked for. Finally, Taylor agreed to put a glaze on my hair. Honestly, I cannot tell any difference except that my hair is a shinier shade of banana yellow now. I also find it insulting that you have to blow out your own hair after spending $125-200 for a haircut and color. If they blow dry your hair it is $40 extra. My wife and three daughters go to Salon Buzz. Let me make clear right up front that I am not commenting on the quality of the hair care services provided. They must be happy with the services or they would not keep going there. I am commenting only as the lucky guy who gets to pay for all the services provided. Those services are expensive, which I understand is my family's choice to make. Key choice we don't get to make, however, are how to pay, or tip, for those services. Our preferred credit card, American Express, is not accepted at Salon Buzz. You would think a high-end salon with what I assume are ample profit margins would accept American Express, but that is not the case here. It's a bit of a hassle to always have to remember to switch credit cards with my daughters before they go there, but so be it. Further aggravating the situation, however, is that Salon Buzz does not accept tips via credit card--any credit card. One must be armed with ready amounts of *cash only* to tip stylists or colorists or anyone else at Salon Buzz. Together these two minor hassles equal a moderate headache. For those responsible for payment at Salon Buzz, be forewarned. read more

For those of you who are nuts about who you let cut your hair, I think you will appreciate this: About two years ago, my long-time hair stylist died on an operating table during a routine operation. I'd been floundering since then, bouncing between one crappy haircut and another. Recently, a friend suggested Jackie, at Salon Buzz. She swore up and down that Jackie would be terrific. I called for an appointment with Jackie this morning, and was booked immediately. That was a surprise. The real pleasure: Jackie was a great listener, helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The rating is actually 2.5 stars...I went to Salon Buzz religiously for about a year and a half and enjoyed most services in the beginning, with the exception of the receptionists. Don't get me wrong, there were certainly a few friendly faces, but overall, it was far from a pleasant welcoming. My colorist was also great at first, but then when I questioned the color of my hair she was dismissive and blamed the lighting. There are just too many great salons in the city to stay with one that is mediocre with an attitude. read more

Here's the thing with Andreas' cuts: you will think you got just a meh cut and be depressed for a few weeks only to magically wake up one day with the sexiest hair imaginable and wonder why you would ever doubt him. His cuts grow out beautifully well, especially for long layers. I don't know how he does it, but a few weeks out, you will have the most amazing hair ever. I'm super low maintenance about my hair generally. I use good products and have genetically decent hair, so I just let it air dry. No fuss, I just let it do what it wants. As a result, I need good cuts. I need people who are able to somehow give me such an amazing cut that my absolute laziness about my hair won't be a big deal. Enter Andreas. He will give me hair that looks good the first day and amazingly tussled with just a little dry shampoo the second day. I kid you not, the texture he gives me actually makes my hair look better when it's dirty. I don't know how he does it. I don't care. I'm a results person, and I just care that I end up with awesome hair here. Also, they have wifi. Win. read more

This place is AMAZING. I have tried sooo many salons in Chicago and finally found a winner. I called in and the front desk concierge was so courteous and helpful (blanking on her name, Raven I think?). She set me up with an appointment with Maggie for the next day. I went into the salon for the first time and was given a super nice tour and felt comfortable while I waited for Maggie to finish up with her client. Then she and I had an in-depth consultation about my hair, what I want and what's realistic. She was SUPER helpful and we came up with a good solution! Then Marta GAVE ME LIFE with her shampooing - I almost fell asleep in the chair it was so relaxing and she's so sweet! Then Maggie got to cutting like an actual wizard and the end result is so much better than what I could have imagined. Will definitely be returning!! read more

I don't know how my haircut could have been better, or the price any better. On Wednesdays, there are HALF PRICE haircuts with a salon apprentice. ($30 for women, $22 for men.) After a coworker recommended it to me, I was apprehensive, as I didn't want anything to go wrong with my lovely locks. But, per reviews from Yelp, I trusted Salon Buzz, and thought that they'd probably pick good apprentices. Luckily, I was right and I had a great experience. The apprentice that I was assigned was Lexi. She was a young, stylish, and just-talkative-enough stylist. She understood my feelings for my hair, didn't try to talk me into anything crazy (I told I wanted to grow it out after the trim, and she agreed that it would be a good idea!), and didn't push products on me. My hair felt amazing when I left and I feel confident that it will look great tomorrow. And the next day too. One thing to keep in mind if you see an apprentice: While the $30 is a steal, it's not so much for the apprentice. They are working for FREE. And because I had such a good cut, I gave a generous tip bc/ I think that's polite. read more

This is sort of a mixed review, but an overall 5 star review. I initially went to see Wendy for some highlights, I am a brunette and had ombre hair that I wanted to break up with some higher up highlights. My hair is naturally wavy but I wear it straight/put a curling iron through it. Not to go into tremendous detail but I really did not like what I left with. In fact, when I left the salon I mentioned to Wendy that my hair was too stripey. That was an understatement. The highlights were also way too light (I used to be blonde and these competed with the blondest of blonde). I was about to go on vacation and super upset about my hair. I called the salon and the manager Eldona (I'm sorry if I just butchered her name!) was absolutely amazing. She was understanding and allowed me to come back in and see another stylist as I felt uncomfortable having toner be the only solution, and did not feel Wendy understood what I was looking for. The manager put me with Katherine who is simply awesome. Both Katherine and Eldona really listened to what I was looking for and Katherine was very honest with what she saw and what my hair should look like. I felt very comfortable in her hands and she really did an amazing job fixing my hair. Before I left, she mentioned the sun may lighten my hair while on vacation and that was an understatement. Day 3 in the sun and my highlights were white. Katherine was kind enough to see me and tone down those highlights at no charge. My initial experience at the salon would have been a 1 star if that, the blow dry was great but I if you don't like the color the blow dry isn't going to make it much better. My subsequent visits were both 5 star. It's rare to find such amazing talent and customer service and I am very excited that I have found such a great colorist. I went to Michelle at Salon Buzz for a re-balance or a full set of pink and white nails. I had previously made the mistake of going to a discount nail salon and I needed to have corrections done to my nails. I asked the nail technician to take a look at my nails and evaluate what could be done to correct my nails. I was willing to pay for a new set, if needed. Let me just say, this was the Worst nail experience I have ever had! I thought the quality of work at the discount nail salons was bad but this nail tech was definitely about the same if not worst. First of all she could not seem to find the correct pink powder to use for my nail service, she had to seek assistance from the person managing the nail salon side of the the shop. Even though Michelle, the nail tech performing my service told me she had over 23 years of experience in the nail industry she could not put on the nail forms and again had to seek assistance from the nail tech manager. I asked for my nails to be cut down slightly, Michelle cut my nails so short they were barely visible over the tips of my skin. When I pointed out my nails were to short, her reply was "Oh, well, it is what it is, they're only nails, they will grow back." I have long nails, but they always have a nice arch(curve) to them. After Michelle finished with her version of a re-balance my nails were flat and short, with an uneven and distorted smile line( the line that separates the pink from the white). When I pointed out to Michelle how awful my nails looked she said " I've done my best!" The service took almost 3 hours. Partly because Michelle could not form the acrylic nails using a nail form ( a skill that someone with 23 years in the business should have). When I told Michelle that I was dissatisfied with the quality of her work she told me again " It is what it is.."... but I won't charge you for the gel coating that goes on top..". Wow!!! Gee, how nice of her. This nail technician was awful! Beware Do Not Use This Nail Technician for Pink and White Acrylics!! What a disappointment! I recently went to Salon Buzz on a whim. I had been going to the same salon for years and needed a change of pace. I didn't have a referral for Salon Buzz, but after reading a lot of other positive reviews right here on handy ole Yelp, I went for it. Taylor did my color and Corrine cut my hair and they both did an amazing job! I was so so happy with the results. The salon itself is professional and clean. One of my favorite things about it was that none of the stylists gossiped and were catty about clients or other employees! Such an enjoyable experience. I'll be coming back, for sure! read more

I just walked out of Salon Buzz being a Happy Camper for probably the 100th time! I come to see Wendy for my hair color. I get to see her more now than I used to since that awful gray just keeps growing back ;) I don't know how she does it but she makes my hair look like the God-given color it is meant to be. My BFF even said she had no idea that I get colored. Wendy gives me exactly what I want ... color that looks REAL!!! This salon is always hopping so expect it to be BUSY! WORLD CLASS SERVICE // After reading my previous post I promptly received a phone call from the Salon Manager - Kristin. Her phone etiquette was phenomenal and her attention to detail was fantastic. She thanked me in advance for allowing them to correct my experience, and would not take no for an answer (in a great way)! Kristin let me know that at my leisure, I could come into see Andreas (the owner of Salon Buzz). Immediately, I knew the compassion and foundation that this salon was built on. I was reluctant to schedule the service because I didn't want to take advantage of his time and assured them that I would be back again. Kristin insisted I that I scheduled with him and I did :) My appointment was at the River North location. The two locations are esthetically different but identical in service, clientele, and experience! Absolutely Beautiful. I was then greeted by Mona. Again, the front desk team is impeccable and Mona was on it! She gave me a tour of the location since it was my first time. She was knowledgeable about everything I asked her from services provided, to the products on the shelves. Mona offered me a beverage and gave me a gown to put on (LOVE this! Especially being in the midwest). From her poise and fashion... I can see why she is at Salon Buzz. After relaxing for a bit before my appointment, I was greeted by Melanie. Melanie is Andreas assistant and I would see her for my services tomorrow! After my initial greeting with Andreas, she escorted me back to the wash station where she was introducing me to the product. She analyzed my hair and consulted me on what I prefer to use and if I was experiencing any challenges. YES! I am! My hair is so dry right now. My shampoo experience began... I was educated on the product used and it felt PHENOMENAL. I was escorted back to Andreas station and my consultation began. His attention to detail was divine. He addressed my previous review in such a professional and welcoming way. He made me feel comfortable, and the actions that were taken were beyond my expectations. My entire experience was absolute perfection. My hair is fabulous, and I am extremely satisfied. We talked briefly and professionally about Nicole, and I want an opportunity to have the experience I received today with her. We all have opportunities to correct and learn from our experiences. I don't have any hard feelings or emotions surrounding my previous visit. I know that if Salon Buzz has Nicole, she is a gem. A company that is truly worldly, sophisticated, and beyond... I have been going to Jimmy at Salon Buzz for nearly ten years and he gives great, consistent cuts and both he and the salon are always over-accommodating to their clients. I've been here twice for gel manis, and both times have been the absolute BEST ever! I've been all over the country getting gel manis, and this place is easily #1... by A LOT. Chelli and Michelle are both amazing, in both skills & meticulousness (I'm really particular and do not tolerate imperfection in results) and have hilarious and engaging personalities. I'm beaming with happiness after coming here b/c they both produce 100% excellence in results. $40 is super reasonable for a gel mani (consider Spa Nordstrom, which charges $55 for the same service - gasp!). What a salon, eh? I was recommended to go there by a friend, great choice. At first, it was a little difficult to understand what was going on when I was calling to make an appointment. And then it was a little confusing when I got there. The finished product ALWAYS looked great. No complaints there. The only downside, is that it is kinda like a factory. First you have to go to one person for color. Then another person does the washes and finishing touches like glazing your hair, then you have to go upstairs to see another person to get it cut. Kind of a hassle but I guess it works. My colorist is a little less than friendly. I mean, she greets me but doesnt try and make small talk. So its a little awkward while I'm sitting there for an hour just staring. eek. My hair cutter on the other hand, is a doll. She does exactly what I want and if she thinks its a bad idea, she will tell me and suggest other things. Only thing is that she tries to sell products to me...i dont want to buy. Just cut the hair :) The price is...well...expensive. Due to the recession, cant go here anymore, i must lower myself to somewhere else. ach! read more

Erin did my hair for my wedding and was AWESOME!!! She did both my hair and 6 others on the morning of the my wedding. My hair, as the bride, cost a lot more than my bridesmaids. Honestly, I was a bit shocked at the cost but saw that it wasn't too bad compared to other salons in the city. The best part was that my hair stayed put from noon when she did it until 5am! And it looked great. So lucky that my friend convinced me Erin was worth every penny. FYI: I booked her in March for a September wedding and she already had a few dates booked around my wedding. I went to Salon Buzz for years, then moved to NYC then San Francisco. I am still looking for a salon where the stylists listen as well while being as well trained. Often a great stylist wants to be creative and put their vision above your requests.. or they have a tough time capturing it. I may have just been spoiled. From lightening my hair with minimal damage, to fabulous cuts/styles, to various rounds of extensions (for length or thickness or both), the nailed it. Miss you, Buzz! I've been going to Rose every 10 weeks to freshen up my layers and bangs for about 8 years or so. In 2009 I decided to mix it up with a graduated bob and absolutely loved my shorter do. I have curly hair, and it is hard to find someone who can cut your hair so it looks great both curly and straight. Rose trims a bit while it's wet, then blow dries and flat irons before shaping it up completely. I always leave Salon Buzz feeling absolutely amazing. My layers are perfect and I can wear my hair either way. The salon itself can get pretty busy, but I've never had a bad experience with the customer service. I've also been to Carrie for highlights and she does an AMAZING job. I'm on a natural kick otherwise I'd be seeing her regularly. I've referred several friends and family members and they're all repeat clients (all curly haired gals). There's no reason for me to go anywhere else. read more

I had not a great experience at another salon and decided week before my sons wedding to take a chance at Salon Buzz which I had never been to before and Nicole did an amazing job for rehearsal dinner and wedding. I have never had so many comments on how nice my hair looks. This was almost a year ago and I have continued to see Nicole ever since and I continue to get comments how nice my hair always looks. She is like the "hair whisperer"!! If she was in the suburbs, I would have her blow out my hair every week. I recently started getting blow outs with Kylie. I started going to her because I couldn't get in with the other stylist that I normally say. I absolutely loved Kylie. She was outgoing, personable, and gave me an amazing blow out. I loved her so much the first time, that I scheduled another appointment with her exactly 1 week later. I feel very lucky to have such a great salon so close to my apartment! I go every 10 weeks to Molly for the best haircuts I have ever had. The place is beautiful, the service is great, and the results look way more expensive than they really are. I have long fine hair that is difficult to style, but Molly has always done an amazing job at giving it body and style. She is very considerate of my busy lifestyle and always has appointments for me on Friday. One day I was running late for work and she got an extra person to help dry my hair faster! I feel like a celebrity every time I come here and leave only down $70 for the haircut! My roommate and I are hooked, we suggest Molly to everyone who moves to town. read more

Love this place! Taylor is an absolute pro at color. She has such a good eye for what will look good and I've never been disappointed. She's taken me darker, lighter, and ombré, and I always get compliments on my color. She was even able to fix my horrendous dye job from XO salon in BoysTown, (ps don't go there!). Kylie does my cuts and I love her as well! I've never been one to care about who cuts or even trims my hair, it just wasn't something I wanted to spend a lot of money on sadly. But once you have a cut from Kylie it's like night and day, and you see what an artist she is, and what crap cuts you were getting before her. Worth every penny! read more

I've been to this salon 3 times so far in the last few months and am quite satisfied with the outcome of my hair color and hair cut! I went from pale blonde to dark brunette with Caitlin. As many of you are aware, this is a HUGE change. I'm extremely pleased with the results! ! My closest friends now tell me they like me much better as a brunette. I was also introduced to Bumble and Bumble's Hair Powder for Brunettes. This product is a must have if you have thin hair. I spray this on my parts and my confidence level boosts! Taylor is the best colorist in the city. My hair was completely botched by a salon and I asked three random people on the street and all of them coincidentally went to Taylor at Buzz. I went to her immediately and she saved my hair! Her color is flawless and natural looking. She does is so well that I don't have to go every three months, but I want to because she's that good! I have referred 15+ people to her so far and am continuing to do so! Also recommends the best products and have used the same for the last year and a half that I have been going to her. Rose is unreal at cut. $70 is a bit pricey for a cut, but I tried to save money going to another salon for cut but keeping my color with Buzz and it was a very bad idea. My cut was so uneven and it made me realize how talented Rose is. Her cuts are perfect and blowouts are amazing. And the best part is that her cuts grow out perfectly and evenly. I was looking for a brow wax while in time and got a recommendation for Salon Buzz. Liz was extremely knowledgeable and took an additional twenty minutes to work on my brows and discuss the shape. I was so impressed that I booked a pedicure for the next day with Anastasia. Anastasia was great and did an amazing job. She was great to talk to and so nice. I live in New York but have visited Salon Buzz several time on visits to Chicago (my hometown) and had great experiences every time--one of which was my wedding day! My first visit was last December for a blow-out with Tricia at River North. She did a great job--my hair is very long and fine, but there's lots of it. So it can sometimes take a while to style and has a tendency to fall flat within hours of styling. But this blowout was full of body and life...and lasted 2 days (unheard of for this girl). I recently saw Amanda at the Gold Coast location to have my hair blown out and styled for my rehearsal dinner. She did an awesome job and worked quickly--my hair looked amazing. I came in the next morning to have her do an undone bun for my wedding. I did not have a trial run beforehand, just a short (free) consultation about a month before the wedding to discuss what I wanted. Amanda did a great job on my wedding updo. I didn't want anything fussy or overtly "bridal," just a simple undone bun that would look soft, not overly "done" and incorporated my jeweled hair comb. And that's exactly what Amanda created for me! She showed me her progress at several points in the process and changed little things without protest when I called out tweaks I wanted for the style. She was done in 45 minutes and the style looked great all day and night. I felt and looked great after all three visits--everyone complimented me on my hair on all 3 occasions--and it didn't break the bank. (I should note that I live in New York and am used to upscale NY salon prices, but I thought Salon Buzz was awesome bang for the buck!)
