Nicole at J. Andrews knows her stuff. I am blonde, and a very picky blonde when it comes to the tone and dimension of my shade. After 5 years in Chicago have been able to find only 2 people that can achieve what I consider perfection for my hair, and the first person recently up and moved to Australia. About a year ago, Nicole was featured in Chicago Magazine, as being a "blonde specialist" and that's just the case! She is very meticulous in her work and prefers to use a bunch of foils so that the color turns out more blended and so that your regrowth isn't as noticeable as soon. I am very pleased! read more

I love J. Andrews Salon! The staff is so amazing - Vince at the front desk is so welcoming and accomodating, and always calls with appointment reminders. Kim is wonderful with chemical peels and facials, she loves helping people with their skin, and I have a lot of (acne/post-acne) work to do with mine! Sarah is amazing for hair and cuts - she took me from a fried, dry, foiled blonde to a natural, shiny balayage. I recently went to their Wine, Cheese and Blowdryers event which was so fun. I had to come back and rewrite my review after having my hair settle in for a bit. If you're specifically looking for the ombre technique this is for you. So although I do think my hair looked nice after this visit it wasn't the "real" ombre technique. The real ombre is very gradual and isn't just two colors on your head. In fact the real one is gorgeous and just fades from top to bottom. I did a lot more research after looking at my hair and realizing it wasn't the exact thing I had wanted. I also noticed several blotches and spotty spots throughout my head. Not super noticeable but when you look at yourself everyday you see it. When I went to my new salon I told her how it was done and she was shocked at the process that my stylist at J Andrews used. She said she's never seen someone just put one color on there and tease your entire head to do it. After I watched my new stylist do my hair and saw the outcome I was easier swayed to stay at the new place!! Much more knowledgeable and looks gorgeous. They also validate the parking garage next door and it's only $10 which is a huge plus and very convenient!! The staff and everyone at J Andrews was nice but if you want a legit ombre that starts out darker at the top and fades very gradually without choppy difference than I wouldnt suggest this salon. read more

This place is amazing. Not only do they give great haircuts for an affordable price, but their attention to detail is extraodinary. My stylist repeated my request back to me twice, and explained what she was doing as went along. When she finished my cut, she dryed my hair for free so I could see what it'd look like dry. I randomly decided I wanted to chop off my bangs, and she patiently redid my style without hesitation or complaint. I'll admit, I was a slightly annoying client, but she did not seem to mind the least bit. It was much appreciated. Aside from my great stylist, the salon is clean, cute, quick, and memorable. (FWIW, I have chest-length curly hair that doesn't tame easily.) Tanya was great -- she listened attentively to what I did and did not want, made appropriate and on-point recommendations and provided pleasant, relaxed conversation without gossiping my ear off. I had Becky and I have never had a worse haircut. I had long hair and asked for a trim but to keep as much as possible. There are pieces that are cut near my chin and the rest is overly layered and MUCH shorter than I wanted. I will not be going back to her and maybe not to the salon. The prices were reasonable but I would have paid twice as much to have had a more senior stylist cut as I asked. I would also pay twice as much now just to have my hair back. And on top of the bad cut, she talked my ear off - especially once she realized I was mad she cut off all my hair. read more

She is not only a gifted stylist, making clients from age 7 to 70 look absolutely great, but she is the most conscientious person I have ever met - in any field. She is kind, easy to talk to or easy to be silent with. She truly cares about you and your hair. It is common to go in and have Denise tell you that she has been thinking about your hair for the last couple of days and thinks you might like this or that kind of cut or treatment. But unlike some sylist at other salons, she respects absolutely the client's wishes.Denise has been equally skilled with my straight, thin hair and my daughters very curly hair. I have been working with Mari for about three years now. Mari is extremely talented with color and with cuts. I get compliments all the time on the color - people are always asking me if that is my real color. I, of course, always say yes :) when in fact it is just Mari's talent that gives me the best color that works for my skin tone. She also does an amazing job with colors - I've had fun with adding subtle shades of pink, rose, and purple! Mari is very deliberate and careful in her process. I can't say enough positive things about J Andrews Salon. I have been going to Nevis for about a year a half and have been nothing but pleased with the results. The entire staff at J Andrews is always very friendly and accommodating. When it comes to picky I think I take the cake! I have long, thick, curly hair and have always loved the end result at J Andrews. Nevis talked me into getting the Keratin treatment for my hair, I hesitated at first, but after trying multiple "frizz control" treatments at other salons and I have to say.. it is well worth it! I get the express Keratin treatment which runs $125, it's a great deal if you ask me and lasts 6-8 weeks. I've gone to J. Andrews twice and I am already extremely please with the services they offer! I am super picky about my hair and they are super patient with me and what I want my hair to look like. I get my hair done by Nevis and she is great. She tells me what she's doing and the products she is using to make my hair shiny and healthy. I just got my hair dyed yesterday and it is exactly how I wanted it. The front desk staff is super friendly and always offer me a beverage and to take my coat right away. They converse with you while you're waiting and compliment you on your hair when you leave. I HIGHLY recommend this place. A little pricey but you definitely get your money's worth and more! Let me start by saying that I recently moved to Chicago (here since June) and have had my hair colored once before visiting J. Andrews -- in nicest terms, the experience at the glitz & glam, over-priced, pretentious, under-qualified salon was sub-par and resulted in a complete flush of $160 for virtually no hair change whatsoever. So, now comes the great part...I have been searching every day for the past 2 weeks (on Yelp and other sites alike) for a great salon, near my apartment, with reasonable prices, qualified stylists AND a comfortable, friendly experience -- enter J. Andrews Salon. To be frank, this salon is the very definition of a "hidden gem". Tucked away at the back-end of an apartment building lobby, J. Andrews is a small, quaint little space that is well-maintained, clean and full of chatter between stylists and their regulars. After changing my appointment from just a cut to a cut/color mere hours before I was scheduled to arrive, I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist who instantly made me feel welcome and offered me a beverage. Given my last minute appointment change, Nicole (the stylist I chose based on other reviews) managed to juggle 2 of us at the same time (both needing cut/color) without a blink of an eye. Even though we were cutting it close time-wise, Nicole took the time to have a thorough consultation with me (cut styles, color ideas, my daily hair care routine, etc.). I explained my earlier issue with a so-called "high end" salon a few months prior and she completely understood my concerns/hesitations. I wanted a traditional Ombre style and during the entire process, Nicole was talking me through each step, explaining what she was doing and why to get the visual effect I was looking for (much appreciated!). As the color processed, she explained some home-remedies to maintain the look and avoid that horrible orange/brassy shade that tends to come out with most Ombres after several washes. She then went on to give me a nice, clean trim to freshen up the ends followed by a relaxing blow dry, all the while chatting with me about my move, how I liked Chicago, work, her fabulous new cranberry courduroys from Gap, music must-haves, etc. Needless to say, I left J. Andrews with not only an excellent hair cut/color, but an amazing new stylist & friend in one (not to mention, lovely acquaintances with other members of the salon staff). And the best part -- this memorable experience cost nearly $40 LESS than what I paid for ONE service at the aforementioned "hoity-toity" salon...a thank you! I will DEFINITELY be back to visit Nicole and the other wonderful members of J. Andrews Salon and can't wait to go a little brighter with my next color touch-up! A sincere thank you to Nicole, as she saved me from another horrific excuse for quality hair care at 3x the cost. I am, once again, a believer in the wonders of the classic "hidden gems". read more

This is the salon and Becky is the hairstylist that I've been looking for in Chicago. Becky did an amazing job on my hair. The layers and side bangs that she cut were perfect. As a hairstylist, she was appropriately concerned on how I took care of my hair and made just she educated me about anything about hair that I didn't know. Becky is personable and I love the positive energy that she expresses. You can definitely tell that she is passionate and skilled with what she does. The salon is a tad small and in a strange location to get to (you have to buzz into the building) but that will not stop me from going here again. The staff was very friendly. I never write reviews, but I had to this time around. I work in the northern suburbs and if Nicole were up here she would be inundated with new customers based on the feedback I've received! I'm new to town and have been to a few mediocre stylists/colorists and then came Nicole. AMAZING! I had shoulder-length hair but wanted to go short on my first visit. We decided for a few inches shorter just to get used to it and then this last visit (only my second visit overall) we chopped it all off and I LOVE IT. I've received so many compliments not just on the "move" of getting it all chopped off but the cut itself. She did a phenomenal job!
