We were starving when we pulled up to Sally Mae's. When we got inside there was eight people ahead of us. I thought oh no it's gonna take forever. But, they opened a second line, by the time I got our drinks and sat down and went to the restroom our food was at the table. My husband got a double cheeseburger, I got a patty melt with grilled onions on it. We did make one mistake. We got the fries but we should've gotten two. The fries were absolutely amazing. Then we went back and got ice cream and banana pudding. My husband loves banana pudding and he was thrilled. Can't wait to stop by here again on our way to Jekyll. read more

Simply one of the best values right off of I-16 on the Statesboro exit. We were on our way to Augusta and took the Statesboro exit around lunch time looking for a place for lunch, I Yelped up Sally Mae's as the place for a quick lunch. I ordered the pulled pork plate with green beans and Brunswick stew along with a cornbread muffin. My wife ordered the shrimp and catfish combo, with Brunswick stew and a biscuit. My wife raves about the fried catfish as being some of the best she has had, the shrimp were also really good for being a away from the coast. We both liked the Brunswick stew, I thought it could have more meat in it, but flavor was very good. My pulled pork was a large portion and tasty. I enjoyed their two BBQ sauces one tomato based the other and the best was mustard based. The only thing I could could complain about were the green beans that were just OK. There pricing is very reasonable where you can have a good meal for $10 or less with beverage. Food - 4 - Good portions and good flavor! Service 3.5 - Friendly Counter service, self serve beverages. The best string beans that I have ever had in my entire life. No seriously. Then, the catfish was fried perfectly and the cole slaw was perfection (chopped vinegar based but not vinegary). Everything was just so darn good. Get the smoked chicken. Just get it. The owner suggested that we put the mustard based sauce on the chicken. He was right. It was the perfect blend of sweet, tangy. This is a great place to get excellent seafood! You can get the high quality seafood you'd expect to get in a high end place but 1/2 the price. The catfish is the best I've ever eaten! The fried chicken is great too! The owner, Mr Scott, always comes out to check on us and makes us feel welcome. The restuarant is clean and the service is excellent. It's okay, stop in for lunch just a quick bite to eat. The loaded Q fries with a little bit of ranch and jalapeños is okay. The girls that work upfront and receive orders are always very nice. The facility is clean and kept ready for business. I have only eaten here a couple of times and will continue to go back, but only for something quick. Something to add. After posting my review the owner took the time to contact me to see if anything could be done to bring the rating. I did in fact stop back in today (no they didnt know it was me :) ) on my way home and retried the same meal. It was in fact 100% better and the service was fast and friendly. We happened upon this place by accident on a trip home from Hilton Head. We had left really early because of rain etc. About an hour into our ride we decided to look for some breakfast. We were coming up on the exit and it said go and we did. Amanda, her mother and the others were all great. This place is named for the two grandmothers. Sally and Mae. Great biscuits especially for stuffing. Not gonna fall apart on you but still soft enough for great eating. Bacon cooked perfect. Old fashioned grits. And some GREAT sweet tea. First thing I noticed was the very slippery/oily floors. Ordered 3 types of biscuits, given one wrong, we didn't correct. Biggest complaint was biscuits were very greasy and falling apart.
