    Huey Restaurant Hours

Husband and I stopped by the new location in Statesboro for lunch. What a gem! We were seated immediately and Anna, our server, was quick to take our order. It's the little things that make this restaurant a great addition to our town. Great atmosphere along with the New Orleans themed decor on the walls, beautifully painted mural, and a screen slideshow featuring photos of famous NOLA landmarks and Mardi Gras pics with jazz and blues music softly playing set a nice tone. Plenty of seating and a nice little bar along the back wall. Since it was lunch we didn't want anything too heavy we both selected the lunch special of 1/2 a po'boy and choice of soup or salad. I had the "Debris " roast beef half and a caesar salad. The slightly toasted bun was so good, tasted like fresh baked bread, the roast beef was a little on the light side of a serving but it was absolutely the best seasoned roast beef I've ever tasted. I make a mean pot roast and hate to admit it but the flavor and tenderness was better than mine. So good! The Caesar salad was made with fresh crisp greens and a perfect dressing. I was too caught up with my own food but my husband had the half blackened chicken po'boy with a nice size portion of the gumbo. He said it had a nice spice to it and he really enjoyed it. We split an order of benigets with the praline sauce and the bourbon cream sauce. Delicious! The only thing they didn't offer on the menu was a good ol' nawlins Muffuletta sandwich which hopefully is in the works. Gotta have that Muffuletta! This is an extremely clean, reasonably priced establishment with great food and I hope our locals come out in full support to keep it busy. Please spread the information!

While we found almost everything delicious, I felt the Pasta Jambalaya was just okay, not bad, but it didn't quite reach the high standard of the other dishes. During our visit, we ordered: - Fried Chicken Benedict (poached eggs, buttermilk-soaked chicken tenders, English muffin, black pepper bacon hollandaise) - Cheryl's Fried Green Tomatoes (golden fried and remoulade) - Pasta Jambalaya (shrimp, chicken, andouille sausage, linguini and creole sauce - Shrimp and Grits (shrimp and savory Cajun sauce served over Parmesan grits) - Parmesan Garlic Grits ( These were so delicious I could have enjoyed them as a standalone dish) - Bacon - Beignets (French Style Doughnuts with Praline Sauce) these were some of the best beignets I have tasted)

The Barbecue Shrimp came in a spicy sauce loaded with flavor. It came with a piece of bread that was perfect for dipping into the sauce to sop it up. There were a good number of shrimp in the serving. The Crab Cake Sandwich was good. It was not as full of lump crab meat as other crab cakes that we've had elsewhere. The Catfish Fingers were large pieces of catfish that were lightly fried. The Shrimp Poboy was satisfying. The Parmesan Garlic Grits were disappointing. There was no hint of garlic or parmesan flavor. Our server tried to rectify the situation by adding cheddar cheese to it. Fortunately, the Beignets were as good as we expected. Huey's is the only place outside of New Orleans where we have found authentic New Orleans beignets. Our server Jenelle was very friendly. At some point, something frazzled her because she seemed flustered and rattled by the time we were ready to leave. We had asked her for silverware for our beignets. It took her so long that my partner got up to get some from another table themselves because we were tired of waiting. When I asked for the check, she gave me the wrong check. She went in the back to fix it and had my debit card. She came back without the card to ask me for my zip code to finish the transaction. We asked her to bring the POS terminal to our table so that we could finish the payment.

The inside was surprisingly quiet, with most tables empty when we stopped by at 7pm on a Tuesday night. We ordered the Combo B with shrimp and crab legs (mild seasoning + garlic butter), along with a fried lobster tail and sweet potato fries. The bag of boiled seafood was definitely the star of the show. The shrimp tasted fresh and flavorful--not fishy at all--and the garlic butter seasoning was delicious. Cracking open the crab legs was a new experience for us and honestly kind of fun. There's something about working for each bite that turns dinner into an activity. We also tried the fried lobster tail. Unfortunately, the batter tasted almost burnt and overpowered the natural sweetness of the lobster meat. In retrospect, I would have ordered it boiled instead. The sweet potato fries were limp rather than crispy, which was disappointing. That said, the overall seafood boil experience really saved the meal. Our server was friendly and kind, especially since this was our first time at a seafood boil restaurant. She checked on us several times without being intrusive and helped us navigate the whole bibs-and-gloves situation. What our family loved most was the communal aspect--everyone digging into the same bag, cracking shells, passing pieces around. It felt interactive and different from just eating individual plates ordered off a menu. Would we go back? Yeah, probably--especially with grandparents or for a fun, hands-on dinner night out.

They really help with making decisions and even offer samples if you're indecisive(like me). They wear masks when packaging food and have an outdoor seating area. Both times I got my food to go, and was in and out pretty quickly. The homemade tropical punch is so good! If ordering a "made to order" menu item, expect to wait about 15 minutes. The curry shrimp is one of those items and I was not disappointed. My friend also got curry goat and the pork chop and both were SO GOOD! As always, I do wish they have more meat, but this is something I'm used to from Caribbean restaurants. BUT- they have all things on the menu when I went in, something that doesn't always happen at the Caribbean joints I'm used to. This is the second Caribbean spot I've tried in the Savannah area, and this is tops!

We had the frog legs, duck frites, a wild boar ribeye special, and the swordfish boat catch of the day. My wife actually said the wild boar was the best steak she has ever had, which shocked me because we have eaten some very good steaks over the years. They also brought us a complimentary bowl of turtle soup, which was something I never expected to try, and it was fantastic. What really separates Alligator Soul, though, is the entire experience. From the small welcome bite at the beginning of the meal to the little treat at the end, the staff makes you feel taken care of from start to finish. The hospitality, atmosphere, and attention to detail are exceptional. My wife is gluten-free, and the number of options available to her was also incredibly impressive. She never felt like she had to settle or miss out on the experience. For years, The Grey was probably our favorite place to go for a special dinner in Savannah. After our experiences at Alligator Soul, this may have taken that spot. Outstanding food, remarkable hospitality, great atmosphere, and one of the most unique dining experiences in Savannah.

Service like hers is a rare gem these days. I never thought I'd say that I like alligator. Maybe flounder), and Wild Bore (my personal favorite by far!!). We thoroughly enjoyed our salads, apps, and meals. And how can you say no to fresh beignets?! We had their summer special - warm peach one, and traditional. Aaaaamazing!! Atmosphere and decor were magnificent too. It's located in the basement, so it made our experience even more unique and fun.

Looking back, we probably should've kept right on walking. We ordered the fried chicken, potato wedges, red rice, New Orleans rice, and cabbage, jalapeno cornbread and pecan cornbread. Unfortunately, the only things we actually enjoyed were the fried chicken and the potato wedges. Once again, it was an epic fail. The cabbage tasted like it had been boiled in plain water with absolutely no seasoning. Both the red rice and the New Orleans rice reminded us of Minute Rice or Uncle Ben's microwavable rice--bland, lacking flavor, and nothing like the rich, seasoned rice dishes we were expecting. The fried chicken was crispy, juicy, and well-seasoned, and the potato wedges were cooked perfectly, but those two items weren't enough to save the meal. We came hoping for authentic Southern comfort food, but left disappointed. Sadly, this is one restaurant we won't be adding to our list of places to revisit.
