I had a really great time coming to Salish Ceramics and getting my hands into some clay. I came here for a work related workshop and had so much fun. We did a combination of ornament making and used the spinwheel to create a bowl. The instructors were incredibly kind and patient and eager to help at a moments notice. The owner is super knowledgeable, has great insight, and a fabulous artist--so talented! I love being able to get my hands dirty, I find working with clay can be so calming. This location is pretty good and good size studio. I managed to paint my pieces and they will fire it up for me after a couple of weeks. Rachel is a fantastic artist and willing to work with people who want custom pieces made. She is making me a set of dinner plates and bowls. We are iterating the process as she will make something and I'll review it to see how it works 'in real life.' Then we will do the next set of plates and bowls to see if the improvements make sense, are not prone to failure in the kiln, and most importantly meet with my high quality requirements. I've worked with many ceramic artists over the years and Rachel is one of the best. If you want to learn ceramics she gives classes. I can't comment on those, however I'm sure that based on what she has done for me working on the plates, I'm sure that the classes are amazing. read more

I spent 2 months working with the studio to complete work for an art installation in Bellingham, WA. At the time, all the local studios were full and unable to accommodate a pressed production timeline but Rachel at Salish Sea Ceramic Studio was available and excited to help! I had a plan for my project, but at any point that I questioned the plan, needed extra help, or just needed to bounce ideas around, Rachel was encouraging and gave well rounded advice. The physical studio space is in a great location, comfortable, and well stocked with tools, clays, glazes, underglazes, etc. brining your own sand paper and paint brushes for detail work is important though. The social aspect of the space is really enjoyable and it was a pleasure to work alongside so many different types of people at varying skill levels. read more

I have taken two 10-week classes here and now use the studio as a member. As a total beginner, I wasn't sure what to expect, and found it to be a relaxed and welcoming community environment. I've been supported and encouraged to learn at my own pace and get in touch with my creative side. I've made some cool stuff so far and am excited to keep learning! read more

I cannot recommend this studio to anyone, because of the owner and the toxicity she brings with her. She regularly comes into the studio and teaches under the influence, and her mood varies constantly. The space and unpaid studio assistants are great, but the owner is worth avoiding. She puts more effort into her personal artwork than she does with teaching or her patrons. She asks paying members & students to use their personal supplies instead of restocking the supplies that members and students are paying to use. I have spent so much money on classes and memberships at this studio, but sadly must end my time here due to the owner and how she runs the space and treats people there. Members pay a monthly fee for using the space and kiln firings, but the owner withholds running the kiln when there aren't student classes happening- despite monthly members paying for those kilns to still run throughout the month. Her attitude is extremely unprofessional. She has ruined student and member pottery with her experimental firings, which she knowingly places next to other's work instead of isolating her experiments in the kiln. I have taken a wheel throwing series class here, but was still unable to center the clay at the end of the 8 weeks of classes. One 30-min private lesson with a different potter, and I knew how to center. Rachel does not teach well, and will use the majority of class to show demos of her throwing, but not actually instructing technique in any repeatable way. I have avoided providing honest public reviews out of fear of retaliation from the owner, as she has shown examples of such unprofessionalism with past patrons. Sadly, many potters with great experience & skill have left this studio because of the owner. She refuses to take advice from others with how the business is run, despite having no business experience herself. Do yourself a favor, and take your time & money elsewhere where you will feel valued and respected. read more

Rachel offers a substantial value for the price of classes, memberships, and firings that are by far the best I've seen from not only a privately owned business, but between two entire coasts! The open studio time alone is more than worth the price, much less the firing and glazing that are often charged separately by others. As someone who has spent the past 15 years working in high-stress emergency medicine, ceramics became my saving grace. Without Rachel's studio and the access to such a holistic and open environment where I could be myself and be creative, I never would have found myself staying in WA for as long as I have. Some of the studio assistants are excellent-- patient instructors with positive demeanors and helpful customer-centric attitudes. I've seen them interact with all sorts of students of varying ages and skill levels, and almost all of what I witnessed was professional and nice. The access to studio time and supplies (tools, clay, glazes, kiln firings) are usually great. The owner is where this place really falls short for me. The class I took was disorganized and had missing or scattered information, even for things that should have been easy to plan like a syllabus. It was far too easy to miss a "deadline" and not be able to have your work fired in the kiln on a good timeline. She spent a lot of class time demonstrating skills which can be very helpful at any class level, but she openly snapped at a student for asking questions during a demo. When she was leading a class, it was difficult to get guidance even during the time set aside for solo skill work. It was shocking to not know what kind of mood she was in and that doesn't sit well with me as a paying customer. She often seemed annoyed or distracted and too busy with her own art to spend time with the students. When she wasn't working on her own art, she was openly discussing strategies for further marketing and promoting the business, eating food in the studio, leaving the studio entirely, or playing on her phone. Her social media posts are often inappropriate for a business owner-- openly shaming her customers on a public forum instead of (or may be in addition to?) working to correct how the studio is being used or misused by working with the customers. It's difficult to recommend this business because the owner is not an approachable or adaptive instructor, and doesn't carry themselves in a friendly or professional way. read more
