Wow, wow, wow- first of all- I adore the converted firehouse turned glass studio with active fire- oh the irony. Not to mention outside has huge glass yard and garden sculptures- it looks fun! We drove by and I practically jumped out of the moving car! Not literally, but my excitement was jumping. Inside my artistic little soul was in heaven- huge pieces dazzled me and tiny treasure were just as enticing. They have one artist that makes miniatures and they were all so sweet- I snagged a tiny black cat! I also picked up a couple Christmas gifts & another glass ball for my collection- I hadn't bought one in years & John may have encouraged me a bit since it was such a cool "hot shop". I didn't even mind waiting to check out as the workers were blowing a vase, once it was ready to break from the punty- the master glass blower broke to ring me up. Colors and combinations are fantastic. This is a great place to buy a gift for someone whether it be a birthday or holiday. I felt they were a little overpriced. Nice little art-glass shop provides visitors with a delightful glass-blowing experience. THE ROSES: Located in what appears to be an old fire station, Callahan's Firehouse is a nicely laid out shop with a good selection of glass pieces, some functional, and some purely ornamental. The staff is very pleasant, and you really feel like your business is appreciated. The real attraction here is the glass-blowing experience they offer. For $95, you get a half-hour experience one-on-one with a master glassblower, and you get to create one of four pieces (fishing float, paperweight, large tumbler, or bowl) that you get to keep. The artisan has set up a system where you simply cannot fail: you are carefully assisted and coached through each step from the point where a glob of molten glass is drawn from an oven to the final forming of your treasure. Excellent safety protocols are in place; anytime the hot glass is being moved from one station to another, the guest stands in one of two 'safe spots'. When finished, you have a wonderful keepsake that you helped make yourself! The artisan is a natural teacher, who does a wonderful job of putting the student at ease and sharing fascinating information on the techniques of glassblowing. It is a special treat to see how well he works with children (Yes, even kids can blow glass here!). THE THORNS: Selection of pieces to purchase tends towards the 'folksy', IMHO. No real artistic envelope being pushed here. This is no Pilchuck Studio, but you don't have the pretensions either. THE VERDICT: Middling art-glass shop really shines with the addition of a 'hands-on' glassblowing experience that walk-in visitors can enjoy. Five well-earned stars from this Yelp Elite. We were interested in making our own blown glass art piece, but due to the pandemic they were not offering any classes. Although we were disappointed, the gallery is still a place to visit when on the island. They did have two artists making blown glass art so it was fun to watch. Lots of interesting pieces like ornaments, wishing stones, feeders and yard art to add color to your garden. We purchased some yard art (metal stakes come free with your purchase) and will return for more! read more

This was another place that gave tourists the Langley cold shoulder. I just don't understand it. Langley has really changed. They aren't the nicest to tourists. They had some really nice blown glass items. I would have bought more than 1 little piece but I was really put off by how rude the female employee was. Don't you want to sell stuff? We were the only 2 people in the whole place and I kept trying to get her attention to ask some questions. Once I did, she just gave a short answer and walked away. I'm like really? What is going on? I have been coming to Langley since I was a little kid, and I always stop in and get one of the round paperweights. This morning was my first time back since covid, and I spent the morning talking with Callahan about his process, art, and life. I had such an amazing conversation with him and I am grateful to have had this opportunity to create a connection with him now as an adult. I was having a very rough day and took an early and impulsive trip out here, and talking to him this morning really changed the course of my day. I encourage you if you go in to always get a piece, even if it's just a paperweight. He puts SO much time into these pieces and the quality is amazing. Kids in a glass store? You would think the staff would cringe but Kate was so patient in answering all of our kids' questions about the glass animals and also let them watch the glass blowing in action. They refilled the bubble machine so the kids could play in it out front and dance around in the bubbles. The items are all beautiful and well-priced, and we got the kids some little souvenirs to remember their amazing visit! read more

Had a glassblowing class scheduled for mother's day. We got in early due to concern about ferry traffic, and when asked, the shop accommodated with earlier appointment times. The class itself was phenomenal. There were three of us in the group, and each of us got an individualized experience. Went back today to pick up our artwork, and the pieces are just fabulous. We've always loved watching the glass blowing being done and when we found an opportunity to do it ourselves, we could not help but to jump all over it. It was easy to book a time slot a week in advance through AirBnB and there is an option to book on the website as well. Our 11 am time slot was one of his first groups of the day. Getting there was easy as we planned in advance for the possibility of lot's of ferry traffic to get over to the island. We left shortly after 7 am and it took only 30 minutes from our place in Seattle to get to the ferry dock and we just about drove straight on. It was around $16 to take the ferry and we ended up on the island around 8:30. Plenty of time to enjoy some coffee and watching the local bunnies at the Useless Bay coffee shop next door. We also had a chance to walk down to the water which was only 2 blocks away and get a sense for the beauty of the sound. When it was our time to start, Callahan offered us a selection of 4 different options to choose from to make. The 4 of us, wife and 2 teens, decided to do the same items for continuity sake and make the Sea Floats. Plus, they were easier than the bowls and other items! The process itself was super easy and gave you a chance to become the artist for the moment. After choosing your colors (trust Calllahan to help make some cool color choices), the process begins. Turning the glass in the almost lava temperature kiln was akin to roasting a marshmallow over an open fire. You wanted just the right amount of turn at an even rate to make sure your glass did not fall off the stick! The blowing process was well done and completely safe and satisfying. The tube was cleaned after each of us blew a bit of our own selves into each one of the glass orbs. Sadly, if you want to take them home, you will need to come back the next day as they are still cooling at over 1,000 degrees. Fear not as Callahan can ship anywhere! If you are looking for something fun and unique that you will treasure forever, give Callahan's a go. You will bond with your family and be possibly entertained by Callahan's cheesy wit as well. Tip: Plan to get there early as the ferry lines were super long to get on the island as we were leaving! read more

This place may excel in their artistic glass designs, but it is all lost on poor customer service. My wife selected three items for purchase totaling $75. We approached the cashier desk and the clerk behind the desk made absolute minimal eye contact with us all while talking loudly about the pricing of various items with another store clerk in the distance as if we weren't there. He broke his conversation only long enough to say "$75 Sir" (only two words) and then continued his conversation with the other clerk while mindlessly finishing our transaction. Not even a goodbye or thank you as we left. We purchased meals and products at several of the local stores in Langley, WA for many $$ less and were greeted when we arrived and thanked for our business when we left. This type of simple customer courtesy was completely lost on the two clerks at Callahan Firehouse. Would not shop there again. read more

This place was really neat. It was in the old Langley Firehouse. Half of the main space is set up as a storefront, while the other is where the actual firing of the glass takes place. My friends and I had just had a lunch at the Braeburn Restaurant (which was great!), and we had admired the cool hand blown glasses that they used for waters. We were thrilled to realize that this was where they made them! It was really fun to watch the artisans actually making a pitcher in front of us, and we each ended up buying a glass or two (or a set of 8, in one case!). They also will ship them for a pretty nominal fee, and then you don't end up having to pay sales tax. The colors were unique, and I really love the two that I bought. They were also sturdy enough that I felt totally comfortable putting them in my suitcase just wrapped in a piece of bubble wrap--they made it home safely. There were lots of other glass objects for purchase--vases, flowers, jewelry, ornaments, bowls. It would make for a really unique gift, especially as a reminder of Whidbey. They advertised classes where you could make your own glass, bowl, ornament, etc.--I think all were priced at $65. It seems like it would be really fun! read more

I had a fun time making my glass paperweight. You go in, pick your project (bowl, tumbler, paperweight, or sea float), pick your colors, and are guided through the process of making your craft. Due to the ridiculously high temperatures and propensity to seriously injure with a mistaken sear, the owner/proprietor is careful to do all the dangerous steps himself. The floor is also carefully chalked to indicate where the clumsy customer should stand at any given step. My husband and friends all chose to make the most practical option - the bowl whereas I went the frivolous route with the paperweight (I liked the bubbles and the weapon-like heft). The customer actually gets to blow the glass with all options besides the paperweight, which was kind of cool. We didn't know that the pieces needed to cool overnight, so we weren't able to take our artwork back with us. Instead, they mail the pieces to out-of-town customers. read more

Absolutely no people skills or interest In helping a customer. I waited so long to try to purchase something, I ate food next door and then came back. When I finally got the item, the man took my card, swiped it, gruffly said, "Enter PIN" and no please or thank you. Rather than returning my card, he tossed it onto the counter in front of me. I set up an appointment for my husband and myself to make something together two months in advance via their website. It was his birthday weekend and we wanted to make a paperweight for his mother who collects them. We were so excited! We got to the shop about 10 minutes early and wandered around...beautiful pieces of art and we probably would have bought some in addition to making some of our own. ...unfortunately when we got to the front "desk" there was no one there. The gentlemen who were working there were very preoccupied with talking to each other. After wandering around we spent about 10 minutes staring at them - and they were directly facing us - no one came up to us, so we left. Disappointing. Visited Whidbey Island from Lynnwood today, and we knew we wanted to visit the firehouse and buy some art. Both yelp and the website said they're open from 9-5pm. Showed up at 12:20 and it was shut down! Called and the phone just rang and rang. Disappointed my family. What a let down. Neat, iconic Whidbey Island institution. We all know about Chihuly, world famous glass blower, but glass blowing is alive in on Whidbey. You can pick out unique and very reasonably priced pieces which are gorgeous all while you help out the local artists. Though I've never blown my own piece, I hope to do so when I return. read more

The guys in the shop are very friendly and they have a great system down to take you through the glass blowing process in a hands on fashion without being to overwhelming if you have never done it. We had a little "sister/niece family reunion" in Kirkland, WA and our first day there we took the ferry to Langley for a glass blowing class. What fun! There were eight of us so my sister booked two hours with Callahan and crew. We were given the choice of a bowl, a tumbler, a paperweight or a sea float to make. We did everything except the paperweight. They did a great job making sure we were safe - like a previous reviewer stated they marked off the floor using chalk to show where we were to stand. I apologize I can not remember the person's name who helped us but he did the initial blowing and then we were able to do some. My niece was concerned about the tube we blew into - germs - but they had a straw that they inserted into the tube and replaced it after every person. They shipped our finished pieces to us - we received them about 1 week after our visit. This way no worries about breaking them while traveling. I can't say enough about how much fun we had - if you are ever in Langley this is a definite stop! read more
