First time I ate here was 20+ years ago. I recently moved to the area and was thrilled it was still in business and run by the same people. Burgers are delicious ... I've had several out of their 10 or so varieties and the double deckers are just as scrumptious. Phoebe, our waitress was a sweetheart. I'm surprised I haven't left a review for this place? It's definitely the neighborhood hang out for a greasy burger and fries. I recommend the Charlie O'Burger but then again I've only strayed once from that to get a sandwich is it was fine, but I like the burger better. It has a bar, dining room, and outdoor patio which I just learned is not dog-friendly because of liability. It is smoker friendly so if you're looking for a spot to hang out, drink beer and meet new smoking friends this is the place to go! read more

I just moved recently and Salem Gardens is walking distance from my new place. I got the Bert burger and two dirty martinis. The patio is nice and definitely the spot. They have a smoking and a non smoking section. They need music outside. Doesn't need to be live but just some background music would definitely livin the area up. Burger was great! Greasy and big!! Definitely a great burger place and fries were good just needed some salt. I won't lie.. I was nervous ordering the martini but they were good! First one was perfectly made, then the 2nd was a little way to strong haha. Usually I won't complain about that but it was kinda hard to drink. Overall would come back since everything was priced well. Tito's martini was $8.50 which I thought was amazing! Give it a 4 stars because the burger was a little to greasy for me but that's just me being picky and the 2nd martini was very overwhelming. read more

I love a good dive, so I was happy to find this little joint around the corner from me! If you're looking for a casual place that has a throwback charm, this is for you. If you're looking for the absolute best burger in Cincy you probably want to keep searching. They have a pretty large menu. I'm a fan of their medium wing sauce, it's the perfect mix of spice and not overly vinegar-y. My husband has tried the burger twice, he said it's fine but it's been overcooked both times. If you enjoy a medium well/well done burger you'll be fine. The plus: people LOVE this place. The negative: If you go on a Friday at dinner it's nearly impossible to get a parking spot! We've tried to go there twice and had to go someplace else. I have been going to The Gardens for most of my 40 years on this planet, & through a few owners, this place has stayed consistently good through it all. Truth told, it IS a neighborhood bar, greasy spoon restaurant, dive bar - all in the best of contexts - where the local crowd in west Anderson have been coming for generations. That is not hyperbole; my family, & virtually everyone I grew up with around my stomping grounds stops in from time-to-time, as did their parents, & grandparents. It's just so comfortable, familiar, consistently good. As to the appetizers - nothing exotic here - just quality, yummy bar food. Good wings, spicy cheese cubes, pretzels, etc. Nice, mostly local microbrews on draft, & a fairly nice bottled beer selection to accompany. Now, their burgers are where The Gardens separate themselves from other local joints & burger chains. Their meat is obviously fresh, not frozen, and is cooked to absolute perfection - not over or underdone. Fresh toppings of cheese, onion, green leaf lettuce, tomatos, pickles, and so on are a surprising top-quality finish to a joint w/ a very well worn laminate bar top & cash register that's older than most regulars. I am not exaggerating - the wide selection of burgers and their preparation make a Salem Gardens cheeseburger one of the very best in this city. I've had very few burgers that measure up. I'd put the Charlie-O burger up against any greasy, beef slop you'd get at Anderson Township Pub, Arthur's, Zip's, even Terry's Turf Club. They can't touch Salem Gardens' fare for my money. Just b/c a burger is big & juicy (greasy by most), does not it make a quality sandwich. Their crinkle fries are almost always perfectly fried, & sides of slaw or cottage cheese are nice accompaniments. You won't find a better bartender on the east side of Cincy than Garrin, and Karen, Scotty, & Annie are friendly & disarming, too. Bottom line - what Salem Gardens lacks in elegance & polish, it MORE THAN makes up for in grub, especially the burgers. In operation since 1926, Salem Gardens is the quintessential neighborhood, family-friendly pub, with the kind of ambience that you usally get only in older cities and inner-ring suburbs. (This one is technically in Anderson Township, although it feels more of a piece with Mt. Washington, whose border is just a block or two away.) The best thing about Salem Gardens is the comfortable feel of the place. The owners are about as welcoming as they could be; one of them remembered us when we returned a couple of weeks after our first visit, even though it was crowded both times. Salem Gardens has a dark, woody, comfortable barroom with better-than-average music on the sound system and/or jukebox. I don't make a habit any more of sitting in barrooms for hours-long periods, but I could see how wiling away an afternoon or evening in this inviting place would be pretty easy. This room manages the rare trick of appealing to adults from 18 to 80. (Kids under 18 are often present, too, but they always seem to be amazingly well-behaved--credit goes to those Mt. Washington and Anderson parents, I suppose--and don't detract from the barroom atmosphere.) Salem Gardens also has a brightly-lit, chow-down section for families. In either room, everybody always seems to be having an relaxed good time. There's a nice draft beer list, with stuff like Dogfish Head and Bell's. I can't fully endorse the food, though. Burgers are really solid if you can get the kitchen to properly cook them to order, and, although I'm far from an expert on wings, SG's wings were tasty and seemed like a good deal. The wife ordered a massive fried-fish sandwich one time that was decent. Other fare is a miss, though: a chicken sandwich came out as a dried-out, flavorless husk, and pulled pork BBQ was well off the mark (more like a Sloppy Joe). Prices are reasonable. 3.5 stars, rounded up for easygoing good-times vibe here. UPDATE (3/2013): Contrary to one of the newer reviews, Salem Gardens isn't anything close to a "dive." It is just a nice neighborhood bar-and-grill with some age on it, and it is perfectly suitable for families. read more

Salem Gardens, always wondered what it was, never actually been inside the place. Last night I had the privilege of visiting for my buddy's surprise birthday get together, it's his favorite and he frequents the place a lot. Salem Gardens is a fixture in the Anderson Township/Mount Washington area having since operated since 1926. It's one of those pubs, bars, whatever you wish to call it that is family friendly...I've never seen too many of those. Friday night tends to be packed, and that's the way it was when I arrived last evening. More often than not, I end up being the designated driver, and last night was no exception. That being said, most places of this sort that I have been to stop serving food at 10pm. Last night, they were willing to keep the kitchen open for anybody wanting food. I got the chicken tenders appetizer...$5.99 for 4 chicken tenders, but they were big. I feel the prices on their food is reasonable, but many people told me that I should have tried one of their burgers, it's kind of what the place is known for. The actual place itself...well, the most open part of the joint is the actual bar area. But with business the way it was last night, way over crowded. The dining area itself is large enough to accommodate a small group, this is where our party stayed the most of the evening. I will say that the bathrooms in this place are quite small, only one urinal and one toilet in the men's room...with business the way it is on the weekends, it might be a good idea to expand them. They've got tabletop video gaming, Golden Tee golf. as well as free shuffleboard. Yes, folks, FREE! You got my attention! This is where our group spent a fair amount of time as well. Overall, Salem Gardens is a local neighborhood hangout where you can get some food, some brews, and have a good time with friends and family. And with it's close proximity to Riverbend, you might even see somebody famous. And if you go on a Friday night and are the DD...don't forget the people watching, never a dull moment! read more

They makes real good fries, the kind we all grew up with! they have good finger bar food, and good selection of micro brews(along with old tried and trues). small game room for kids(10x10), and can seat close to 85(?). Really cute neighborhood bar restaurant. Lots of kids/families. Our kids chicken tenders came out fairly raw though, which luckily I cut his food so i noticed immediately. They took it back and threw the fries and chicken back on the fryer so we did lose a chicken tender (the one i cut) and the fries were a bit over done. My salad was huge and most of the ingredients were fresh. Some lettuce was a bit wilted and slimey I picked it out. My husband seemed to enjoy his burger and fries, although he was so hungry it was gone in a couple of minutes haha i would still go back and give it another chance. The older bar atmosphere perfectly matched the key offerings. We ordered two burgers and both were very tasty. Exactly how a burger should taste. The french fries and onion rings were pretty good but not spectacular but that would not keep me away from coming back for a burger. I've driven past this place for years. We recently moved around the corner and decided to give it a shot one night when we had family over. The burgers got great reviews from everyone that had them. The beer is nice and cold, but the atmosphere is less than appealing. The décor is dark, dated, and in most cases in need of a good cleaning. There is dirt on the counters and in the bathroom that look like they have been there since 1926. After seeing the cleanliness of the establishment I was less than ready to try their food. The bathroom was an absolute disaster with urine and other bodily fluids encasing the toilet. The conditions of the mens bathroom were an apparent lack of responsibility by the staff, and a lack of care for their cliental. The bar staff is hit or miss for the most part. Some cant seem to figure out how to pour a beer without 1/4 to 1/2 full of foam. The ones that can pour a beer are as friendly as a snake. I wouldn't expect that great "Cheers" atmosphere when bellying up to the bar, but the beer is reasonably priced. Overall, Salem Gardens did not live up to the iconic figure that most Anderson Township residents give it. I would not recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet, clean, and relaxing environment to have a beer and some food. There are other establishments in the area that give you much better service and a better overall experience than this one. read more

Like I don't drink, but it's nice that I can walk to this place and sit on the patio. They don't allow dogs on the patio, which is dumb, so I hardly ever go. Besides that, the food really isn't good. There isn't much I can eat, but it's a bar so whatever. The workers are nice. Basically, what I like is that there's a patio and that it's walking distance from my house. I guess it's like the poor students I used to teach who were forced to suffer through my comedy routine. I was craving for some hot wings and YAY this place delivered. My wings were hot, the sauce had a good kick, and I ordered breaded mushrooms on the side for the win! Lovely surprise...wings are $0.60 each for 5+ wings so I got a deal! The space is a dark, local neighborhood bar and the staff seemed pretty friendly. This place is around the corner from us and we are new to the neighborhood so decided to give it a try. We got burgers that were pretty decent. I have to say the fries were amazing. Crinkle cut, perfect crispness. Wait staff was very friendly. But we were also the only ones there at the time. The inside is definitely dated. I found myself staring at a giant crooked framed picture and thinking "if I worked here I'd straighten that thing!" I'm not even sure they deserve a whole star to be honest. I've tried this place multiple times (because it's so close to my house) in hopes that maybe my previous attempts were just caught at a bad time. They have the worst service and the servers all have attitudes like I'm inconveniencing them. Nothing feels better than a server rolling her eyes at me when I ask for the water that I previously asked for 35 minutes ago. I don't even know why I come back, other than convenience. read more
