Food was good as was our service, but I do have a couple of concerns. First and foremost, their menu says "Happy Hour in Dining Room M-F until 6pm. We ordered drinks at 5:40 and when I asked about Happy Hour specials were told "that's only in the bar". I pointed out the menu that clearly contradicted her and she replied "oh yeah that went away in January". It is mid March!!!! That is plain lazy and tacky...even if that was the case just offer the deal. It was an entertaining show. Also asked if there was a special occasion, and replied our nephew with us was celebrating his birthday......that was it, no Happy Birthday, nothing. Just odd. read more

So sad this place has gone down hill.. the food was horrible. The service was even worse-- poor guy had 9 tables and no help. I'm sorry I will never go here again. read more

Tried the dynamite roll last night. Its was so bad its disgraceful they can even called that....its so sad you have to be there to find out why so many 1or 2stars and come out gave such review. Its so sad I had just crossed out another sushi place in Tucson. read more

This place reek of old dirty carpet soaked in old kitchen grease! I just wonder how anyone can stand working in such condition. The food is not good, soggy sushi rolls & dried out rice! If they could give the whole place a facelift & improve the menu, I would come back again. read more

Sat on the patio for half an hour. Watched the wait staff walk by many times. Not one sign of acknowledgement. Called the main number, asked to speak to manager. Was told they were busy. They now lost our weekly patronage. Worst service ever since new owner took over. read more

We recently visited Sakura to celebrate a family birthday. There were 6 of us and we decided on Teppanyaki. This was a Saturday at 5:00 PM and it was starting to get busy - I would recommend reservations for groups at this restaurant. We started with the soup and salad - typical bouillon based soup and iceburg salad with a thousand island type dressing - nothing special here. For our main courses, we had various combinations of shrimp, chicken, and steak with sides of fried rice and vegetables. The meats were all very tender and full of flavor - best chicken and steak that I've had in years! Rice was a bit bland and had to add some soy sauce to it, but cooked perfectly. Vegetables just the way I like them - hot, but still crunchy. Cooking show was good, but our chef was not the friendliest. Prices are on the high side, but pretty typical for teppanyaki - but very good food! Fun was had by all - I would definitely recommend Sakura! read more

Sakura - Evening at Sakura ! - Sushi Bars Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

I used to love this place. Sadly after a few bites of even their specialty rolls I was worried of getting sick. Warm sushi that is supposed to be served cold is a real turn off. I always say I'll give it another shot but this time I won't be back. read more

So I went to dinner on Saturday before an event and I ordered the Shrimp Tempura($18) I asked to sub fried rice for white($2upcharge) and I was fine with that. When my plate came, it had large tempura shrimp(4), various veggies(including a big circle of SWEET POTATO), the "fried rice" and a green salad. ALL on the SAME plate. The salad was dressed so it seeped into my rice, the rice had corn, Lima beans and green beans in...you know the frozen kind you've got in your freezer right now. My problem is why would you #1 serve a dressed salad on the same plate as your mains and #2 why the hell would you put those mixed veggies in ASIAN fried rice. Service was shoddy to boot. I ended up paying over $20 for basically 4 shrimp. I will never eat there again. read more

All the years that I lived here I never ate at this sushi bar. I heard alot of good things about it so I finally decided to try it out. Im not a Fan of fish at all but they do serve steak and chicken. So I tried the chicken Yakitori, I must say that it was very tasty! The terriaki sauce was really good . I have to give it a thumbs up read more

So my hubby and I went for happy hour. It's been a while since we've been here. We sat at the bar and the bar was so sticky. It was humid that day so we were hoping it was just the humidity.. The bartender was not very friendly at all. We ordered drinks and started looking at the menu. We happened to look to the left of us and we saw a lime jar on the counter and it was gross! It was a old pickle type of jar like you would get at Costco and it was all crusty and nasty! After seeing that we decided not to order anything else and left. read more

Pretty packed so we chose to sit in the bar area. The bartender Vicky was awesome we didn't know it was happy hour but that was a plus so there were several drink options around $5. We decided to just get a few appetizers and that worked well. Lettuce wraps the chicken was flavorful and had mushrooms and scallions. Pot stickers, sushi I enjoyed myself and the price was just right. read more

Before heading to the Paint and Sip across the parking lot (Creative Juice), my friends and I decided to get a bite to eat at Sakura. We sat at the grill side for the fun and show. We had dumplings (Gyoza), miso soup, sushi, steaks, chicken, fried rice, vegetables.... the cook was fun and the show is entertaining if you've never done one before. read more

First off let me start by saying we tried to call in a to go order and was refused. We then drove and waited for our order which was for one person, very small portion of steak and the rice was wrong (fried not white) the total was $33.00. We called to complain regarding the wrong order and to give us credit or take it off the bill which she also refused giving us the only option of coming back (we live all the way across town) for our rice. The customer service is horrible, the staff is always preoccupied with each other and or on their phones. Very pricey for average food and small portions. Plenty of food choices in Tucson! read more

As soon as we walked in I was hit with the smell of a old, oily and dirty restaurant. The smell of old food immediately turned me off to any hopes of having fresh sushi. I know it is a Teppan-Yaki style restaurant as well but they should really have better ventilation. I also have a feeling it's just a very old place that hasn't been cleaned in quite some time. The interior design looked like it was from the early 80s. The sushi roll we tried was not good and we left after that first course. The staff was very nice. It's unfortunate that the places in this kind of shape though. They need a Restaurant Impossible intervention! read more

This used to be a great place for sushi and teppanyaki. I placed a to go order for 4 items with the hostess. It took her 45 minutes to let me know she would be "bagging my order". I informed her that I had not seen the bill yet and she gave me a verbal total and a ticket with no dollar amounts, just the items. I checked each container to verify the order. One item was missing and two were wrong. How does someone screw up 3 out 4 items ordered? When I pointed them out, on one item she said, "well I didn't charge you for the extra" as if that makes it okay. Between the poor service and the employee attitude I won't be going back. There are better choices in Tucson. read more

Run! This place has so many roaches... We moved tables twice as we understand stuff happens but more at the table we were at?! Crazy! My party and I couldn't even stand to be there anymore and lost our appetites... Manager came over and asked what he could do and I told him what does he think we should do. He said pay... I said I will pay for my drinks. We ran out of there to run home and shower before meeting for a movie. read more

I have been to this establishment many of time with quick, friendly service. I went on a friday night (8-15-14) with a group. First, there was no parking due to an event in the shopping center. Then, we were not allowed to be seated until everyone in the party arrived. Unsure of how many would be able to make it due to our profession being in healthcare we decided to wait in the bar. We waited thirty min. and were seated for six at Teppan table. Minutes later our order was taken and the five others in our party arrived. The staff made no effort to seat the other members of out party with us. That really was a spoiler. Food was fine. When I attempted to pay with a Groupon, the waitress said "we don't recognize those!" She didn't even bother looking at the Groupon. Goes to show that one bad apple can spoil the bunch. I did not make a scene as I did not want my group to be aware of my issue and other time constraints. I rarely go out to eat due to my financial situation. Sakura has no way to email complaints. Just a phone number on their website. That is all around poor customer service. I won't be returning. read more

Great sushi and a nice hole-in-the-wall back bar. Sakura has a small but lively dining area with hibachi cooking and the distinct smells of Japanese cooking. The sushi chef creates incredibly fresh options and even better bargains during the daily happy hour in the back bar. Grab a prickly pear margarita and Rangoon appetizer to make the meal even better. I'll be going back for more sushi and to try the hibachi in the future. Customer service is the only reason for 3 stars instead of 4 since the food was great. Restaurant needs a good scrubbing though to take care of the grease coming from all the open air cooking read more

We had a good dining experience at Sakura today. I was worried as many reviews were less than stellar. We had a party of four seated with three others for Teppan. Service was friendly and attentive. Two of us had filet and scallops and two others, filet and shrimp. The filet was very tender. The shrimp might have been just a tad over done. The place could use an updating, especially the flooring. It is also a bit expensive but we had a good meal and a fun time. read more

I was pretty upset with this place for serving what they claimed was "toro" and it was a hard, flat, chewy piece of crap. Really, I'm not normally that rough on a place, but it was unacceptable and showed a complete lack of interest in serving quality product. Maybe their teppanyaki is better? I would hope so. It would be hard to be worse than the sushi. read more

If you have a designated driver and want to get drunk, or want to eat whatever "Teppanyaki" is, then perhaps Sakura is for you. If you want Japanese food, however, this just isn't the place. I've been to Sakura a couple of times at the behest of friends. I don't eat "Teppanyaki" because I don't consider it to be Japanese food, so I had to make my determination from other parts of the menu. The last time I visited, I had a hankerin' (yen?) for some Tonkatsu, a breaded, fried pork cutlet that yes, also isn't really Japanese but since it has been regularly eaten in Japan for hundreds of years it is close enough. Much to my disappointment, it was not on the menu. How could it not be on the menu? Few non-seafood things are as common as Tonkatsu. A former boss of mine was a Narita airport protester back in the day, and when he was arrested and thrown in jail for weeks without being charged or allowed to see an attorney the upside was that the prison ran its own pig farm. He told me that the best Tonkatsu he ever had was when he was in prison. He might even be compelled to go punch out a cop just to have it again. And Sakura doesn't have it on the menu? Ok, so no Tonkatsu. I decide to order the chirashi-zushi, a sushi dish where strips of fish and shellfish are artfully arranged atop a bowl of sushi rice. This has become my standard means of judging sushi when not at the sushi bar itself. Typically chirashi-zushi is served in one of those lacquered stacking bowls and when created by a talented person is a marvelous work of art. Most people pick up the bowl and use direct shoveling maneuvers with their chopsticks when working down to the bottom. But my chirashi was served in something like a broad, shallow western soup bowl with a wide brim. How was I supposed to eat this, with a spoon? The contents was average, but the presentation was all wrong. I was befuddled. read more

the place is rundown, with outdated decor,,, not your typical Japanese restaurant. but the locals seem to like it because the place was packed. we made it in time for happy hour and had some apps, chicken lettuce wraps and chicken on a stick and fried won tons. they were good..with a Mai -tai. the drink had too much juice. overall its has the ambiance of a regular bar with a live band . i have to say that the place was really busy but the apps came out fairly quick. overall it was good, would i come again? probably not. read more

So every year my husband and I go here to eat for our daughters birthday . It has slowly been going downhill and this last trip Thursday had sealed the deal. We were sat with very strange people which was interesting. The menu was cheap looking but the prices had gone up $6 so I was confused. The tepan chef was very lame. Didn't do any tricks. Plus he forgot our order of shrimp and had to ask someone to go get more shrimp. The food was not special and the veggies were under cooked. After all that the bill for a family of 4 was over $100. I don't mind spend money like that but it should be worth it. The only saving grace was the waitress she was great. read more

Came for Happy Hour which was 3-5pm. First impression - I loved how the waitresses dressed in kimonos. Lettuce wraps were good as well as the cream cheese rangoons. Also ordered the Las Vegas roll which was great, and a California roll which didn't impress. We sat in the dining room which consisted of just a few tables. Most of the restaurant was for teppan. Overall it was alright. I'd like to come back to try their teppan. read more

This used to be one of our favorite spots. The food was good, not great, but the fun at he tables made for a happy night. The last several visits have been bad. Food was way too salty and rice was burned. The cooks are tired of their own antics. I told the waitress of the bad food, but she did not care and no manager came over. We will pass next time. read more

Our family went to this restaurant to celebrate a birthday. We were very skeptical at 1st due to the Tucson lifestyle magazine they had on the wall from when the restaurant was at its best in 97 and the latest edition 2000 of good places to eat. We ordered food which was way over priced for the small portions. I was served scallops and chicken for $38. 4 scallops and handful of chicken, which was dry. At the end of our meal, our ticket came out $184 for 4 people. I told the waiter that they had on too many drinks to our tab. He then went to his manager and asked if this was correct. She then came to our table and tells me in front of everyone that "you had 4 drinks, we pulled camera on you" I knew this was not correct, so I told her that I would like to see that footage. She then says I'm sorry I cant. I told her I only had 2 drinks not 4. She insisted that I had 4 drinks. I said you have great staff working for you, I'm not sure why you run your business like this. She finally realized their mistake. By this point, we had already tipped $30 cash to our chef and an additional 25% gratuity was automatically added to our tabs since it was a big group. I think we deserved better service from the management, and this should have been handled differently. They ended up correcting the tab at the end but we left so disappointed from what should have been a fun celebration. I'm sorry for my 1st post having to be negative. This was hard for me to post but I don't want anyone that's going out for a special occasion to have a bad experience. read more

This was a nice place at one time. Smells and is dirty now. Kind of a dump. Dirty sticky carpet. 1980's furniture. Men's restroom has a busted stall wall sitting on the floor and plywood screwed to the wall. A large satellite dish on the roof is tipped over and looks to be broken. Decorative fence on the roof to hide things looks like it is about to fall off. Needs a total gut and refresh. Happy hour on the patio can be fun! Band is usually good. Food and drinks are pretty good. Have patience with the service. read more

came in my server was Vincent. thought the whole experience he was great and treated me well. I ordered the salmon skin role, baked potato role, and the lollypop role. all the sushi was great except for the lolly pop role. the cucumber was spoiled and passed its date. it tasted completly bitter and distasteful. it was the most expensive role i ordered and turned out to be the worst role i have ever had. the server was kind enough to send it back, but left me wondering how fresh there fish and food really was. read more

I used to love eating at Sakura. Hadn't been back for years and after reading the reviews, I was skeptical about going back. My friends had a groupon and invited me to dinner at Sakura. SO....went there last evening and, even though I was no longer expecting much, it was just as I remembered it, both the food and the service were excellent. From the soup and salad to the Teppan chicken and shrimp, it was ALL good. I will be back. It's also a really fun place for kids and grandkids. read more

The restaurant is in serious need of a thorough cleaning, the carpeting seemed to be dirty and the decor needs updating. This use to be one of our favorite restaurants, but the quality has gone down hill. We had a sushi appetizer which was good, but not great. The shrimp appetizer was served after our main course and was over cooked. My filet was very tender. I wouldn't order the fried rice again, the vegetables appeared to be a small amount of frozen vegetables and the rice lacked flavor. After tipping our cook at the table our waiter informed us that the check tip was split between him and cook, the other family too had paid the cook a cash tip. Think this was our last visit. read more

We are visiting and heard that Sakura has gone down hill and not what it use to be, but we decided to give it a try anyways.....man am I happy we did!!!!!! IT WAS AMAZING! Just how I remembered all those years before! The chef did awesome and made it so fun for my kids, he even got my pickiest eater to try a whole thing of broccoli!! The wait staff was so attentive and really catered to our needs! The food was delicious!!! I am so happy we gave it another shot! Maybe it's because we went at 6pm during a week night but we are super happy with the service and food! Don't give up on this long standing place! I think they turned around for the better!!!! read more

Unfriendly waitress (she may have been the manager) who dissapeared during the order to answer the phone ). About 5 minutes later (place was dead, about 12 people total inside) a man came and finished our order. Then the lady returned with double drink orders for all the parties at the Tapenuke table. I tried to ask what came with meal, she was very short and unhelpful. Mushroom soup was brought out and we returned that us unedible. Cook at the table was good and entertaining, but then shoved a tip cup into our face saying "I don't get tips from the tab" well sorry I use a card and tip after a complete meal is over. The steak, lobster, crab, chicken meals were all really well prepared and tasted great. Was very shocked at the small sizes of the meals. For $32-48 a plate I would expect a full breast and steak not split between 2/3 people. Not one of the 4 meals was big enough of for leftovers. Afterwards I asked for a discount for the horrible soup and salad but was offered nothing. 2 adults and 2 kids $144 (no alcohol, all food), left a $20 tip that was not deserved but I did take half of it straight to the cook who was the only good part of the night. Will never spend another dollar of my hard earned money here. Only reason for the 2nd star was the main meal tasted good, but very small portions. read more

I have always loved teppanyaki places. Sure they're a little cheesy but it's fun (especially if you come with kids!) and the food is always delish. My favorites are usually shrimp and a steak of some sort. The veggies are my favorite part though! We went here to celebrate a birthday a while ago and after ordering a tuna roll to start decided that we definitely needed to go back for the sushi. When I saw there was a Groupon for Sakura we had an even better excuse to head back up that way. I really liked the Cherry Blossom roll... I hardly ever order any specialty rolls but this one called to me and my regular tuna and yellow tail nigiri were great as well. My fiance ordered some rolls and the plain tuna and yellow tail rolls had so much fish in them! Definitely what we like. It's so frustrating when you get a roll and it is practically all rice with hardly any filling. We also like that we can order that delicious Sakura house salad with the ginger dressing to start! Miso soup is also included at no charge. Very happy to come here every now and then :) read more
