Great food but service not so much. We had a caucasian male waiter and he was rude, totally bad attitude from the minute we came in. No smile, not polite, im not sure how he is still working at this establishment. Made snarky comments about our two kids, our 3 year old just wouldn't sit at the table, we tried our best but kids will be kids. Restaurant was almost empty with only 3 tables occupied. Finally after only 10 min! being there, he said the owner asked kids to be at the table (I guess we wont be ever coming in with kids there again or at all for that matter), not everybody's child can sit still at the table. Anyway, we had to ask to pack our order and left. Ruined dinner. Left very bad taste in our mouth. Think twice if you have kiddos and want to dine here. read more

Been coming here now for years, and the service has declined over the years. The attentiveness was very poor. Had to ask for a napkin (none at table), had to ask for chopsticks, no plates served with appetizers, so dripping got all over the table, servers not friendly like in the past, just over all not wirth it. I recommend going to Sakana sushi instead. It is sad some of the sushi restaurants don't model themselves after the ones in Japan. The service in Japan is the best. read more

One of my favorite places to have lunch and my favorite Japanese restaurant in town! The price can be reasonable to a little high depending on what you get.m for lunch. The lunch maki combo is $7.95, which is great. But lunch sushi specials can be $8.50 to $13.95 depending on what you get. If you substitute something for salmon, they do charge extra $1 each substitute, which seems a bit high. But overall the food is never disappointing. And lunch specials come with miso soup and a great salad. My favorite is Salmon Skin + Cucumber hand roll. This place makes the best one in town in my opinion. The roll is tight enough to keep all the ingredients perfectly while you eat it. Other places I tried in the past can't seem to do this for some reason, and they often fall apart or get loose while you eat. And their sushi and rolls are pretty good. Try volcano (oh dinner menu) if you like eel. I like their spider and ever green rolls too! Check this place out!! Great place for lunch. read more

Ordered takeout sushi here for the first time as we are trying to find a great local sushi place. Wow! We were not disappointed. First, the fish was extremely fresh and generously included. The maki rolls were not drowning in sauce as they are at many restaurants trying to mask the quality of their fish. The menu has a huge variety of sushi rolls to choose from as well as many other different items if you have folks that aren't fans of sushi. I wish I had taken pictures to show how fantastic the rolls looked when they arrived home. Highly recommend. read more

The sushi here is relatively fresh and the ambiance is clean and nice. Service has never been bad but it also hasn't ever been enthusiastic either. The biggest disappointment about this place is the flavor of their sushi rice... Properly seasoned sushi rice should have a nice balance of vinegar and subtle sweetness. The rice (half the battle) used for sushi here is seasoned to give an aroma suited more for Chinese cuisine. For avid sushi lovers, this will be a turn off. For those who just love saucy rolls, you'll appreciate the variety of maki they have available. read more

Low quality fish. Tuna is a bright pink color and is extremely mushy. The atmosphere is quiet you could hear a mouse fart. Waitress didn't really know what she was doing. Go to Fujiyama instead. Cheaper and higher quality sushi. read more

I'm always leery of sushi in landlocked states, but I'd say this is my favorite sushi and hibachi place in/around Boise. The first time we went was for Valentine's Day (with two kids) and the place was absolutely packed. Nevertheless the food was still wonderful and the service and the hibachi show were great. Last night my husband and I went for date night and the experience was even better. The restaurant was mostly empty (8:30 pm on a Tuesday), but still very plentifully staffed. We ordered the Sushi & Sashimi boat and couldn't be more pleased with the presentation. One spicy tuna roll, one special roll (we chose the Dynamite for the tri-colored masago), 18 pieces of sashimi, and 15 nigiri pieces for $46 is an amazing value. Granted, for the price, I was afraid we'd be getting something terrible, but it was amazing. The fish was fresh and firm, the rice perfectly cooked, and the rolls were tightly packed. We ended up taking half of it home, because you also get miso soup and house salad with the combo. Highly recommend! read more

We were in Boise and it was Sunday night. Jesse was craving sushi. We looked on Yelp and most places were closed. Jesse's mom took us to Sakura. The place was empty. We must be late diners. Jesse and his mom ordered some sushi rolls and I ordered Unagi rice bowl. It was delicious. It was pretty basic rice bowl and it was pretty hard to messed up. I tried the sushi and it was pretty good. The price was a little steep but then again we were in Boise, kinda far from the ocean. So if you are looking for sushi place that's open on Sunday night around 7:30 pm, this place will save your sushi crave. read more

After living in Boise for a little over a year my wife and I have not eaten due to only 3.5 stars. We have had sushi and Hibachi in other places in town, but this is by far the best. We decided to sit at the grill and had excellent customer service and great food. We did not have Sushi this trip but we will the next time we visit. Definitely would not return. Calamari batter is like onion ring batter. Not really sure what was on top of my sushi roll. It was like minced salmon out of a can. Dynamite roll seemed like it was prerolled hours earlier(maybe a day or two) and then deep fried. Just not a good experience. :-/ read more

Nice place, but not all that it could be. This restaurant features both Sush Bar and Teppanyaki option. My group opted for just sushi at our table. For the 7:00 dinner hour not very many folks seemed interested in the teppanyaki. Most tables in the dining room were full. Very clean. Simple beer and wine bar at the entrance in case you want a beverage while waiting. Tonight wasn't an issue. I started with a Tempura Shrimp appetizer. I was disappointed that it only came with 2 shrimp, but several pices of vegetables. If i had ordered the Tempura Vegetable appetizer would I have gotten more shrimp? Several sushi roll options. Entrees are not priced much more than other options plus you get a choice of miso soup or a salad. The menu didn't appear to be well marked to aide the patron in choosing what would be spicy. I gravitate toward the really spicy rolls when marked. There were no pictures on the menu to aide in knowing what you are ordering. Table card did show Sashimi options. Since I ordered an appetizer I decided to stick with a simple 18 piece spicy tuna maki combo. The others in my party ordered the fancy rolls. My plate didn't look any more impressive than grocery store sushi, nor did it taste any more fresh. The others who spent $3 - $4 more on their rolls had more impressive presentstions, and what they shared with me was very fresh tasting. Sakura does not overload their rolls with rice. And they do use generous portions of fish. Average roll prices on the entree menu were $14 - $19. Plenty of non sushi items available also. Service could have been more attentive. I was never offered a 2nd beverage or refill of water. No offer for dessert either. For my ticket they missed out on at least another $15 + tip. With all the other sushi options in the Boise area, Sakura just didn't impress me enough to say it's worth the 10 mile drive. Out of town traveller and stopped by for some seafood Udon. The food was good but not that special. Definitely not bad like the one reviewer who seemed to sit at the bar. The prices are not cheap but also not over the top. There are sure a lot of options beyond what the name implies. The place actually has a small sushi bar (14 seats), four hibachi stations, open table seating, and three private floor seating rooms. The staff was friendly, attentive (not too much though), accommodating, and felt like a family group running it The patrons were all happy to be eating there which is always a good sign. The place is really bright and the atmosphere really is not anything special. I was there on a Sunday, 7:00 and it was not busy but quite and comfortable. I always measure a restaurant on if I would come back, and in this case I would give it a try again and try something different to eat. Maybe see how the raw fish is here. read more

We came for the Hibachi grill. The food was good. However, we will likely not return. One of our children has a serious food allergy to egg and dairy. Due to cross-contamination on the grill we always request that her meal is made in a clean unused pan in the back when ever we eat Hibachi. This has never been an issue anywhere. Instead of accommodating her needs, the waitress kept insisting her food would be cooked on the grill in front of us first before the other food. This was not going to work. The grill had been wiped but we could still see crumbs in the corners of the grill from earlier meals. She full on argued with my husband and I and could not seem to understand that even trace residue left from the past meal could give our daughter a severe reaction. She ultimately had our daughters order cooked in the back, but we were less than confident that it was prepared appropriately. We have eaten at Sakura about a half dozen times over the past few years. Generally, we have encountered good sushi, generous portions, average service, and a fair value. This evening (Valentine's Day) my wife and I decided to enjoy an early dinner at Sakura. When we arrived, the restaurant was half full, with most customers sitting at the grills in the back. We were promptly greeted and seated. As soon as we sat down, a server came over to take our drink order and then asked if we were ready to order our food. Seeing that we had not had an opportunity to open our menus, we requested a bit more time. About two minutes later, the waitress arrived and asked if we were ready to order "yet" (her word). We again stated we needed a few more minutes. Not more than three minutes later, the server returned and we ordered. We both ordered bento boxes, which came with miso soup and a salad. The soup and salad were standard Japanese restaurant fare. Before we had finished both appetizers, the main course arrived. Since the tables are quite small, we had to adjust our dishes to fit the plates on the table. Our California roles, assorted sushi, beef negiyaki, beef teriyaki, and shrimp tempura were well prepared and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the rushed pace of our dinner continued. Before we had a chance to taste every dish, the wait staff walked without saying anything. A second server refilled our glasses and our original server came by our table again-interrupting our conversation by silently staring at our plates while we ate for approx. 30 seconds. Getting the message that the staff was apparently anxious to "move them in, move them out" on a holiday evening, we quickly finished our meal. On our way out, we noted that the restaurant still had about five empty tables, despite having two small parties apparently waiting to sit down. In any case, it is unfortunate that the diner leaves with the impression that she is inconveniencing the establishment by ordering dinner. As an added "bonus" both my wife and I experienced digestive symptoms suggesting food poisoning after leaving Sakura. Needless to say, we will not return. read more

We've been to Sakura many times over the last 7 yrs, it was our favorite in 2004-2005, but last night was probably our last visit. Our young kids love Sakura & wanted to take me there for my Bday--they like watching the teppanyaki chef make big flames, the special chopsticks for kids, and the goldfish pond, and they love sushi too. Food was OK, not as good as it used to be, or as good as other sushi places we've been to recently, but there was a long black hair in my 4yr old's order, tangled in the broccoli over her teriyaki chicken. We didn't complain, just removed the broccoli from her plate. It's highly possible the food just didn't taste good at all after seeing that... again, this place used to be a family favorite in previous yrs, so we tried to suck it up and be polite. Apparently they aren't very accommodating when it comes to food allergies, not sure if it's the language barrier or if they just don't care. We have to deal with a cayenne pepper allergy, and politely asked if we could have a substitution for the special "spicy tuna" roll that comes with the triple sushi. Waitress said "no substitutions". She didn't seem to understand "allergy", so I asked to speak with someone who understands "allergy", and an older man came & nodded that he understood, but they seemed a little annoyed. I also quietly spoke to the younger english speaking waitress who seated us, just to be sure the order was understood. They served the food promptly, but on my plate was a california Krob roll. Not what I had asked for. I would have paid extra to avoid a cali roll, if I had been given a choice. Not a big deal, except we had a couple previous experiences where they were non-accomodating for food allergen requests @ Sakura since developing this stupid allergy, I figured maybe they just had a bad day before. We used to eat there very regularly for yrs--used to bring my 4 yr old to eat at the sushi bar (he loved to order his own 'tako', and watch them prepare it, he's now 10), & you'd think they'd know how to accommodate regulars. If you want good service @ Sakura, probably best not to mention food allergies. If you have a food allergy, restaurants are more accommodating elsewhere, & the food quality is also better elsewhere.
