My wife and I got the hibachi combo and sushi spider roll. I have been waiting to see what opens at this area of Kamakana Alii called the grove. This is located right next to the soon to be opened foodland. I grew up and adore Japanese food. With that said standards are high and I am hard to impress when it comes to japanese food The food was okay and pricey. Nothing bad just was not impressed with the flavor, quality, or value. Glad there is a teppanyaki place on the west side. This new restaurant is in the Ka Makana Alii/The Grove. Lots of parking right now. Once Foodland's Farm Market opens that'll probably change. Restaurant is beautiful with eye pleasing decor. Bathroom clean but floors very slippery/oily. Staff was competent and friendly. The hibachi chef was hilarious. Jony kept us entertained as he cooked our food with flare. Made us laugh and made our dining experience memorable. Dined Kobe's/Tanaka of Tokyo regularly and was glad to find this place. Now we have one of this side of town. No long rides/traffic to Waikiki. Priced accordingly and great quality food. Just wish the wait wasn't so long. Waited 45-1hr. One of the newer restaurants in Ka Makana Alii at the Grove, that's on the side where Pet Smart and 24 Hour Fitness is. Went here to celebrate a friend's birthday and was very pleased with the service and the food. The restaurant has bar seating, regular table seating and Teppan Yaki seating where you get your own table side chef putting on an entertaining show while cooking up your delicious food. Prices were reasonable. Just be careful when walking around in there, the floor is slippery from all the oil from the Teppan Yaki cooking. read more

We enjoy the food but don't like how they cut down the menu and made items ala carte especially with their hibachi entrees. Like that they offer sit-down, dine-in option (vice sitting at the grille) but the Kapolei location just isn't big enough to balance the space accommodations. This review is not to complain about the service we receive or the food. Everything was acceptable to me. HOWEVER, this is about an unethical way of adding tip our bill. I got the bill and didn't think anything of it until I got home. I paid for the bill not knowing that the tip was automatically added. The employee did not mentioned anything to us so I gave cash tip for the service on top of paying my bill. I'm not complaining about the amount but more so felt like I was taken advantage of as a customer. For the restaurant not being honest and letting us know in advance about the tip, I felt they should have shown us some common courtesy!! Just a heads up if you go here, review your bill carefully. First time here at this place and they do not even deserve a star for service but i guess you have to press at least a star. My family and literally sat at the table waiting for service for over 10 minutes with menus wide open. When we first sat down, one of them brought water and then that was it. The waiter passed by a table more than I can remember but kept serving the other table and getting their check. Almost felt like he was working to get his tips in. Decided to just get up and leave. Came here on august 22 2020 for the first time with my husband and son, we enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back again and as well as sharing this place with family and friends! We did hibachi and ordered some sushi! The sushi was okay, very light and small portioned, probably wouldn't order their sushi again. Their calamari appetizer was delicious! best calamari in restaurants! the side dip for it so tasty! My husband and son had steak and chicken and i had shrimp. Cooked fresh by our awesome chef that entertained us and made the experience extra fun and memorable, haha. So tasty, so juicy, highly recommend their hibachi!!!!!!!! didn't get any pics, sorry just ate like a savage, haha. Love this place, one of our new favorites now! Thought we'd try this new place out. The place really looked nice and very spacious. They really seemed to unorganized though, took them a while to come take out order. Not sure why because there was around 5 -6 people standing around. Finally took our drink order, but took a while for them to bring it. Even when I finished my beer, it took them a while to notice and ask if I wanted another one. The chef seemed to be nice and a little funny, but he really over cooked everything, from calimari to shrimp, to lobster, to steak, to the chicken. The noodles were terrible as well. Not sure if I'll give this place another try or not. We eat out quite a bit and like to stay close to home. Good location, just not the best food. The chef tries to have you do a shot os sake, but he squirts it in your mouth with a squeeze bottle. When I gave him the signal to stop, he kept squirting, until my mouth was full and it ends up getting on my clothes. He kind of pressures you to do it as well. Not that I expect anything, I saw the table next to us had a birthday as well and they brought her a little box for her birthday, not sure what it was, but they didn't bring it to me. Perhaps it's for the ladies. Lol I'll be interested to see other post in a month or two to see if they've made improvements. I really hope they do. The sushi was okay. I came for dinner and had an excellent experience. I only ordered the plain sushi and it was good. I just wished they changed their spicy ahi sushi to make it more spicier. I don't know it has a wierd neon color. I came here for lunch for a cheaper hibachi plate but was told that lunch menu is the kids menu and I'm not allowed to order for lunch unless it's for kids. So I guess don't come in for lunch if you're an adult??? I did end up ordering both lunch and kid hibachi steak plate (thank god I had a toddler with me) to see the difference. We have gone to this place in the past for special events (birthdays and anniversary's). Went there in February for my birthday. Found a baby roach crawling across my plate right after we bagged up food, so we left our bagged up leftovers there. Since then we've asked friends and neighbors and they never had an issue but it's darker in there and hard to see. I know in the area the doors/windows are open a lot for air flow. We assumed it was a stray and stopped going there. Fast-forward, we ordered to go food yesterday deciding to give the place another go. (Should have gone with previous impression on the place-that's on us). My husband only got a chance to warm his up and eat it today because he got busy at work. Mine was fine yesterday. Minus our salads- they were gross and soggy, and brown. Upon eating his food he got a metal bristle as he took a bite (like one they clean with) in his vegetables. Disgusting and dangerous. Two strikes and we're done. Check your food. You don't want to swallow one of those and chance an injury. Very unimpressed. Look interesting from the outside. Inside is nice, greeter at door friendly, but it stopped there... our waiter seem bothered, grumpy. Wanted to love this place, but there was too many cons vs. pros. First off, I was only one of two parties and yet the food took way too long. Secondly, I order a lychee martini expecting something nice & sweet like other restaurants, but got something Closer to rubbing alcohol.. seriously.. I love drinking but that tasted more like shots in a martini glass. The waiter asked how I was and I told her about the drink, but nothing was done. Lastly, the sushi was OK, but nothing crazy honestly. Even though the ambience is nice, you can get a better value of sushi with better service elsewhere, like Sushi Spot in Aiea. We came here on a Saturday night as a party of 6 for a birthday celebration. Our reservation was scheduled for 7:30 and it took about 10 minutes for them to have our table ready. We drove about an hour to get there so I hoped it would be a good experience. Once we got inside the floor was so slippery and coated with oil, even wearing slippers it felt like I would slip. Our waiter was ok, it took him about 15 minutes to finally take our orders once we were seated, when we ordered more drinks, he needed to be reminded to bring them out. There are grills all around and we were seated at one. There also appeared to be outdoor, booth and seats by the sushi bar. The cooks have speakers on their carts so that they can play music. But it is so loud, you can barely hear yourself think let alone have a conversation with the person sitting next to you. Also each chef plays a different genre of music and it's just not a cohesive atmosphere to enjoy your dinner, we had a chef playing reggae music while the other table over had a chef who was pouring shots in the customers mouths and dancing with rap music playing. Our chef was nice but again, it's so loud that it's not like you can hear them anyway. There was no usual "show" with the onion volcano etc. All we got was a big fire and bouncing egg. Everyone in the party went with different meats for their dinner, the noodles and fried rice that you order with the sets were sooo garlicky and it's the type of garlic that is already chopped so it's grainy and not fresh at all. They also come with a ginger soy and yum yum dipping sauce. But they weren't anything to rave about. The steak was good and cooked to our specifications but I wouldn't get the calamari or chicken again, they were mediocre. Everything is coated in excessive amounts of butter. We also ordered the dinosaur egg sushi, and this took forever to come out to the point where we were done with everything else. Oddly enough when we asked the waiter to cancel it, it finally came out. There was really nothing special about it, it's a ball of imitation crab battered and fried with avocado inside and it was overcooked. Overall for the price and other options that you can get in town and other places, I'm not sure if I would be back. The loud atmosphere and mediocre food is not worth the drive out. read more

The hostess/front end staff here are so rude..they have a horrible attitude. We ask her that we preferred a hibachi seating but she act like irritated and keep telling us that we need to wait for 1hr and 15mins and hibachi is only for the show.. and if we don't want table we are free to go coz a lot of people waiting but I don't see anybody outside..I don't want to ruin my sister birthday that's why i told them we can get the table. 3x we came here we got greeted by the same lady that's always at the front check in , S___ ( I won't put her name on blast) but she seems to be in some type of supervisor position? Your looking at $16-$20 for a roll. You're better off going to genki sushi or sushi bay if your looking for good sushi. Also, one time I did not complain because I hate to be a complicated customer so my coworker actually spoke out for me because I told her multiple times that my drink tasted really weird as if there was just syrup, she told one of the workers and twice they came to me and said no that's how the drink taste... Long story short they ended up coming up to me to apologize because I was correct they forgot to put the alcohol and mix it so I was drinking literally syrup-well at least I was trying to take sips so I didn't waste $. What we thought would be an enjoyable dinner became a disastrous one. If you want to go somewhere where you have to yell over the music, which they have multiple different songs playing simultaneously, where you won't get greeted properly, and get horrible customer service this is the place for you. I will never go back to this restaurant ever again. Worst decision I've ever made to have a group dinner. We came in with a group of 6 people and with a party over 5, there is a gratuity fee of 18% added to your bill. However with the service we experienced with the waiter Vincent that evening, 18% was unjustifiable at that point. While this waiter brought out our 2 Sakura boat orders, he failed to listen to us when we told him to wait before putting it down on the table so we could get the water cups out of the way. He proceeded to ignore our warnings and knocked a full cup of ice water which spilled and completely ruined our friend's plate which also had got her wet. This waiter didn't even apologize nor help clean the mess he made. After the spill, he failed to return for a good 15-20 minutes. In fact he didn't even acknowledge that he spilled the water. Another waiter had to come and help us by giving us extra napkins and he too mentioned that he witnessed the whole thing. When Vincent returns to the table, we tell him that he caused a big spill and that our friend's plate was ruined. Still no apology or even acknowledgement of the ruined plate of food. We tried to ask if it could be possible to get a new plate but I don't think he even bothered to do anything about it. After all of this, Vincent does not return to our table for awhile. We tried to see if we could get a different waiter but we were unable to. Our other friend had to talk to the manager about the waiter and our service. You would think they'd change the waiter but they didn't. Once Vincent noticed that our friend had approached the manager, he tried coming around more asking if we were okay and if we had any questions. We attempted to explained the situation but Vincent was not listening to what was being said, not taking accountability of his mistake and was rudely interrupting our friend as she was talking also still no apology. After our other friend spoke with the manager, all they did was take off 10% off of the bill. When paying the bill, we refused to pay the gratuity fee and left no tip and only paid the bill total. When checking our bank statement...they went ahead and STILL charged us for the gratuity. I understand that mistakes happen all the time but the lack of bare minimum of decency and accountability is unacceptable. And the fact that the restaurant let this slide shows how much they care about the quality of their service towards their customers. I wouldn't take people I care about here. Maybe take people you hate or something cuz they'll be good at giving them bad service. read more

The experience was bad from the start. 4 employees saw us walk in and failed to even greet us. A couple minutes later the host was rude and did not meet the standards of an approachable host. Once we got seated, our server failed to even greet us and started with "Separate checks or one check?" The menu says it comes with chicken katsu but when we got it... no chicken katsu but instead teriyaki chicken....I was not happy...first of all...the server should have told us that they no longer serve chicken katsu...we wouldn't have ordered this if they have notified us upfront. They then tried to give us stupid excuses as to why they didn't tell us...did they think I wouldn't notice? Also it says it feeds 4 people...what...4 skinny people? My bestie and I ate almost all of it with no problem. The bathroom was super filthy. There were a lot of flies hovering above our food. This is a Japanese restaurant but all the staff was Chinese and it showed in their food...it tasted like a greasy Chinese Restaurant, you know, the dirty oil taste laced with monosodium glutamate. We went this past Friday to celebrate my niece college graduation . Take note I made a reservation one week ahead for party of ten at 8:30 pm . As a customer I called the day at 5:00 pm to confirm if my reservation are still good and it was. So we arrived about 8:15 notify them . While waiting this manager or supervisor "Skye" seems to be upset on her team members and seems like she's yelling at her at the register. I was like looking but it was too loud so I said maybe it wasn't. Though her facial expressions shows . Then when it's our turn to be called I informed her "Skye" that the other 2 party backed out last minute so we were just party of 8 . This rude lady "Skye" turn her back to us to talked to her fellow teammates to sit us in and you can see her face and eyes were rolling. There are some situations that can't be controlled . I'm just glad who sits us says it's ok and enjoy your night . Actually it's all ruined since that eye rolling from that woman did . Also the guy that assist us in in hibachi dinner . I know he is trying his hardest to put on a show but come on it's a graduation dinner please nest time to engage . Although I still give an ample amount of tip since I know that's how they earned money. Ordered the soft shell crab tempura as a starter and it came fancy on a bed of salad topped with seaweed salad and tobiko, drizzled with unagi sauce. It was crunchy and delicious. Also ordered the Dragon roll, was awesome. Avocado was ripe and creamy and had just enough sauce with rice. Ponzu sauce was so good to dip in. Salmon nigiri was light, fresh, and the salmon to rice ratio was perfect. Server was polite and helpful. On the leeward side of Oahu (Ko' olina) on vacation, and we've been pretty limited in dining options due to covid. Sakura looked fun, and since Kapolei is within 15 min of our resort, we have it a shot... ended up being a great choice. We sat at one of the Hibachi tables, and had a great time.
