When I say I love Sushi Bay, I truly mean it. I've been coming here since they first opened years ago--back when I was still in high school--and it has stayed one of my all-time favorite sushi spots on the west side. To put it into perspective, there was a flash flood warning during a storm this week and I still drove 40 minutes just to pick up takeout from them. That's how worth it this place is to me. The portions here are insanely generous, especially for the price point. You get so much food, and the quality never feels compromised. The fish is consistently fresh, flavorful, and well prepared, which is why I keep coming back year after year. Their service is also incredibly efficient. You can tell this team really knows how to run a tight operation. They stayed open and adapted throughout COVID, and that ability to pivot and keep things running smoothly still shows in how quickly and reliably they handle orders today. If you wanna sit inside, I urge you to come towards open or with the expectation to wait a bit. You sign up on the clipboard outside and wait patiently. The good news is that they turntables extremely quickly. Places like this are rare--great food, great value, and a team that clearly cares about what they're doing. It's kind of a gem that they're a conveyor belt sushi place (the belt doesn't run, actually) and they're still reasonably priced. No wonder it is always packed! We had to wait 1.5 hours on a Saturday lunch rush! The service is really good and they do try to make sure you're taken care of, I guess people just constantly order and stay forever. The sushi was so good and way better than any other "fast food" type sushi (Genki/Kozo). I couldn't believe how big the pieces are, and everything tasted so good. There's very few true tables and has a bar seating with a conveyor belt. The size of the sushi and size of the fish was immaculate. I'm a big fan of Genki Sushi and haven't been to Sushi Bay since high school (over 10 years) so I wasn't sure what to expect but after my recent visit I totally get the hype now! I ordered the dynamite roll, unagi nigiri and the fried calamari and everything was so yummy! I really liked how the dynamite roll had avocado in it and I was so impressed with how huge the unagi pieces were for the unagi nigiri. We arrived at 10:45 AM for the 11 AM opening, put our name on the waitlist, and received a text when our table was ready. Despite the morning rush, we were seated by 11:35, and the service remained impressively swift. Our order included a selection of nigiri and the spicy ahi bowl. After the movie, hubby decided to drive down for some sushi at Kapolei. We haven't been here like forever because it's far for us. So glad we decided to come down. There's lot of parking but if you go during peak time it can be busy. First thing, gotta write your name on the list. Because it was the weekend we waited. Hubby was okay for waiting. We finally got called and the place is clean and space out. The conveyor belt is not being used. Gotta order your food from the waiters. We tried unagi, spicy scallops and hamachi and other stuff. So glad we waited because all the food was good. We will be back. Plus they do take out in person and online. If you don't like waiting gotta come during non peak time. So many people doing takeout orders, likely around 35-40 in the hour that we waited. 2 loading zone only stalls right out front (10 minute limit) makes it convenient for grab & go. We ate here last night after being recommended by a friend and coworker of my wife's. This is a pretty normal sushi joint with a carousel that doesn't even move anymore. It does seem to be on the older side from the interior. We came in last minute for dine in as we thought dine in was until closing which we were wrong about. They still graciously accomodated us and the chefs had no complaints. We literally had 5 minutes left to order and took our order nearly immediately after we seated. We like their garlic sushi, soft shell crab, and ribeye. The rest was pretty normal for a sushi place like this. Although there was a 30-minute wait to get the 5 of us seated at 12:30, the service was quick and the wait staff was SO friendly. Despite the 30 minute wait this second time for 3 of us at 1:30, the food was onolicious and we got to chat with the owners, Lance & Jackie. Be prepared for a wait because seating just depends on the number in your party and availability, waiting on those who are enjoying their meals. Counter seats may turn away more quickly and many opted to do takeout. Our favorites were the fresh ahi, baked mussels and unagi. Spicy ahi platter! My husband and I finally had a quick lunch here for the first time since that one pandemic. Those spicy ahi platters at countless parties lured us here. Even though the conveyor belt no longer functions, our sushi lunch was still inexpensive, filling, and tasty. Sushi Bay is really one of those sushi all-stars when legit sushi is far and few between on the Westside as compared to town. It's definitely a step or two above Genki Sushi. My forever all time favorite cheap sushi eat whenever I come back to Hawaii! I always make it my mission to order food from here every time I come back, and my most recent times have still been amazing without any problems. I always order their Spicy Shrimp (this changed over the past two years as they're not the little shrimps anymore and also lack a little bit of flavor), Spicy Scallops (huge fan), Garlic Shrimp, and Garlic Salmon. Those are always my four to order items, haha! In my most recent trip back here to dine in, the conveyer belt option has ceased. We can only order from one of the workers, and it would be made fresh. Bummer that they got rid of the conveyer belt concept but at least all the food will be made fresh rather than sitting out for a while and going to waste. Definitely a must go location as the portions are always huge especially for the price paid! Will be back on my next trip back to Hawaii. P.S. Wait lines are still ridiculous but they can go by quickly depending on the time you decide to go. I came here for the hamachi nigiri. I was told there was none. I asked the waitress to please double check and without hesitation she said "we're all out." It's fine if things are out of stock so I ordered other items. However, when people next to us who were seated well after us and ordered well after us got a plate of hamachi nigiri I had to ask our waitress what's up? She said she was mistaken and that they were out of the hamachi Kama (the cooked collar of the fish) and she asked if I wanted hamachi to-go but at that point we'd already ordered and received most of our other food. The waitress also said she'd check if there was miso soup. She never come back with a response. I had to ask the sushi chef about our unagi nigiri. He told us he accidentally gave it alway to the people next to us. When we got our last item the spicy tuna roll, it was mostly rice and there was more cucumber than there was fish (see pic). We also had to flag someone down for water. Service 101. This definitely wasn't worth the hour drive to get here from the windward side in traffic, and the 30 minute wait it took to get seated. This deserved 0% tip, but being in the service industry for many years I never tip less than 20%. I hope they realize I'm happy to tip 30%, 50%, or 100% for good service/ food quality/ atmosphere. I haven't been to Sushi Bay in years. I barely drove to Kapiolei since it's a far drive from town. I was craving sushi and my friend wanted to go to Ka Makana Alii to catch Pokemon so I was like why not. We can stop by Sushi Bay for lunch. We arrived exactly at noon and surprisingly we got a table (booth) a few minutes later. They were quite busy where the seats were almost full and the takeout counter was loaded with containers and packaging. The sushi was quite fresh and has a larger portion compared to other conveyor belt sushi places. We always get surprised seeing the size of the spicy tuna don. It's enough for 2-3 people to share. Their nigiri's were also large. They were fresh and soft. Their rolls such as the volcano, dynamite, and dragon roll were good. Good amount of filling with good amount of toppings. Their fried pieces were very good. The ika karaage and shumai were delicious with the side of sauce. The sauces were great. Overall, still a great conveyor belt sushi place. Good filling portion with prices matching their competitors. I would stop by Sushi Bay every time I'm in Kapolei. read more
