"Asian fusion plus sushi" Just tried this new place nestled in the shopping center on University Dr. behind Target & Sam's Club-- quite a diverse menu ranging from various sushi (BOGO, though today was 50% off all rolls), hibachi meals, curries, pad thai, pad see ewe, etc. Most entrees are in the $10-20 range, so reasonable while not "cheap" per se. "Classic hibachi meals" are probably the best deal, at $10 for the entree with tofu (slightly more with meats) and choice of miso soup or salad. Pluses: + Every dish we tried was good-- miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, seaweed salad, sweet & sour chicken, Vietnamese lemongrass tofu hibachi, and a few sushi rolls. Nothing was "knock-your-socks-off-awesome", but every dish was quite good. + Slightly upscale atmosphere. Restaurant was well-lit, with a separated area for the bar vs. regular seating and sushi. Cloth napkins, cloth tablecloths, and nice chopsticks (not the usual giant-toothpicks that come as one piece you break apart). TV in sushi area detracted slightly from this, but at least it was very quiet. + Good portion size. The classic hibachi meal would have been plenty of food for me by itself. + Very attentive service (but see below)-- none of our water glasses ever got below half-full, and we got our foods remarkably fast. Manager came to check on us. Minuses: - Server definitely meant well, but visited the table too frequently and would hover when we were trying to subtly hint we don't need help. - Surprisingly hard seats in booth-- not much cushioning there... - No real "kids meals", but it doesn't seem like a place that would intentionally draw in kids. Synopsis: A good place-- definitely somewhere I can imagine going for a work-related lunch or dinner with a visitor. I enjoyed everything I had, but was not "wow'ed" about any of it. Given the range of dishes and the price-range, I would have preferred it if one dish really blew me away. This may be my personal fault for not being a huge fan of upscale Asian fusion restaurants, but personally, I feel happier after leaving less-fancy and cheaper places, like Pad Thai or even Chai's, or just going to a sushi restaurant if for sushi. Or maybe going for the "show" at one of the teppenyaki places. But I'd still say this place is A-OK. read more

I'm going to put this out there... I think it's the best sushi restaurant* in Durham**. Here's why: --Daily BOGO sushi --50% off sushi on Tuesdays and Thursdays --Inviting, chic space --Huge rolls! There are places serving half the girth of these at the same price. --Nightly drink specials The Specialty rolls menu has about 30 things on offer... too many of them involving tempura, for my liking. There's nothing too crazy inventive, but plenty of choice to find something that fits your taste. We ordered 5 rolls, and of those, our faves were the Tai and the TNT. Also of interest for me were the various sashimi and nigiri platter options, as well as a Sushi Boat for Two -- $60 for what sounds like a ton of variety. Aside from sushi, they have quite a large menu featuring Asian cuisine ranging from hibachi to Vietnamese. The restaurant is divided into two dining rooms. One has a blue-ambient bar, and the other features the sushi bar. We were in the latter, and I was impressed that the entire sushi bar was fully seated... I rarely see people choose those seats over dining tables; but the chef interaction seems to be great here. From the host to the server to the guy who brought out our plates and named each roll, everyone was nice and prompt. The manager also came by quickly to check on all the tables. They're doing things right here, and I'll definitely be a frequent customer! ------------ *I don't consider Yamazushi a sushi restaurant, given their menu serves only sashimi and broader Japanese specialties. **Cary and Raleigh offer stiffer competition. I can't believe I'm writing two 5-star reviews in one day, but my goodness- I was more than surprised by the quality of Sake Bomb!! Tucked away in a not-so-hot shopping center in SW Durham, this place will not let you down. The appearance outside was incredibly misleading in that it's a bit sketchy on the outside but what a wonderful treat on the inside. When you walk in, you walk under two beautiful chandeliers to the host stand. To your left is an ambient bar area and a nicely decorated dining room on the right. The hosts are quite friendly and quick to seat you at a table (we even had a group of 6 on a Saturday at 6pm with no reservations!). We were quickly greeted by our server who suggested several beers, wines, and drink specials. She even told us about the specials for the night... emphasizing half-priced sushi (even on a Saturday). Thought I'm no sushi sensei, the sushi menu was quite extensive, and everyone seemed to love it. They have a boat of sushi that has tons of rolls on it, not sure how many types on there. What a great presentation though! They have tons of entrees and other choices for those non-sushi lovers, from Thai to Hibachi to noodle dishes. I ordered the chicken Drunken noodles with 10-star spice.... yes, I said 10-star :) The server made sure I knew what I was talking about before she told the cooks to load my dish with extra thai chilies. They even brought me a separate bowl of them, and I was super happy about that :) The dish was so fresh (and huge for $14!), and was great warmed up the next day. My partner Sara got two sushi rolls and two beers, and our bill was like $35. My family and myself went here for the first time tonight. Last week while leaving Wal-Mart we had a Gentleman come up to us and asked if we liked Asian food, he received a very eager yes in response. He told us Sake Bomb just opened up and handed us flyer's telling us about the BOGO Sushi, and giving us 15% off everything excluding sushi, and alcohol. I looked up where they were, and some reviews and was very pleased to see it is less then 3 miles from my house. So we planned a dinner there tonight. As soon as we walked in the door we were met by a very nice outgoing gentleman, and two amazing chandeliers. Then the very studious host lead us into the main dining area and we were taken aback by the absolute stunning decor. It was very modern Asian, and beautiful. Almost as soon as we sat down our server Lee was there to tell us the specials and take our drink orders. Lee was amazing, one of the best servers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Our drinks were never empty, and Lee gave us great recommendations. It was very nice chatting with him, and everything he recommended to us was right on! Twice we had what I would assume were managers stop at our table and ask us how everything was, and ask us if there was anything they could do, and also giving us great recommendations. The second one bringing us their "Asian Nachos" to sample(they were amazing!). The miso soup was to die for, as were the dumplings, and imperial rolls. Now on to the sushi. What can I say about the sushi...not sure if I have enough time to say everything I want to say about the sushi. First let me start by saying it is officially the best sushi I have ever had, anywhere! They have a sushi boat called the Sake Boat and we asked if that was half off like the normal sushi, Lee(our server) relayed our question to the manager and he promptly came out and talked to us about it, telling us it was not, but honestly we could get more, for less ordering it individually, and he would see what he could do about the boat. When they brought it out to is, it was the most visually stunning sushi presentation I have ever seen, in person, on TV, or in any type of media, and it was the boat! The taste, was outstanding, each flavor was crisp, and defined, everything very fresh. As we were leaving I peeked in at the bar area and it was beautiful, and sexy. Next time we go, I plan to stay and have a few drinks at the bar. The wonderfully friendly host saw us out the door, wishing us all a goodnight, and thanking us for coming. This is our new official place to go, whether it be for dinner, a night out drinking, or a quick lunch at their sushi bar. This is the place! I highly recommend Sake Bomb to anyone. Maybe it was just their sushi rolls but I was left unimpressed. I came with a large group of ~20 so I was extra understanding of the slow service. However, didn't think they'd slack on the food... The sushi rolls were heavily stuffed with rice. Legit, my maguro tartar roll was far more rice than fish.... What a bummer. The fusion roll had slightly more flavor but that's likely because it was tempura fried. I ended up taking out half of the rice in my maguro tartar roll just to be able to taste the roll. Yes this place is BOGO, but i don't think its a good deal since the specialty rolls are more of like rice rolls. My friends seemed to enjoy their salad and drunken noodle so maybe their entree dishes are better than their sushi? Service was very slow but that's expected with such a large group. 1 hour to get our food, another hour to get our checks. Nevertheless, our server was so patient and kind with us. He always made sure we were well taken care of, which always made the experience better. Atmosphere is classy yet casual. The restaurant is clean and dimly lit. Awesome sushi! Went for a friend's birthday dinner and they offered 1/2 off all sushi items that night instead of the usual BOGO special. I'm not sure if it's every Thursday that all sushi is half off, but I'd definitely go back for that deal so I can order a main dish and one sushi roll. I ordered the Land & Sea Roll = filet minon on top + shrimp tempura + cucumbers. It was a very different taste, but I really enjoyed it! The drunken noodles was also very tasty, and came out on a huuuuge platter. And the best part is that they definitely don't cheat you out on veggies and meat. I'm very picky about noodle dishes at Asian restaurants at the risk of them being super salty, but it was delicious and highly recommended. I will definitely be coming back to at least try all of the different sushi items. The selection is huge. I've been a loyal fan of Shiki for a very long time, but this place might be a close second, if not a parallel choice for my favorite modern Asian restaurant. read more

Went back again for another visit and enjoyed an evening with friends in the bar area. (check out my other review for coverage of the dining area). The bar area was just as good as the dining area and is absolutely perfect for hanging out with friends even on week nights! Being in the bar area I had to try the asian styled burger. A lot of the other reviews mention that Sake Bomb is similar to Shiki and I have to agree. I came in on a Thursday evening as part of a birthday group with 11 people and overall, I am impressed at how our waitress handled us and a roomful of other guests. First, it took the whole group about 40 minutes to all arrive. Our waitress was super patient and came by each time to explain drink and food specials and take drink orders. On Thursdays, all martinis are $5. The BOGO sushi deal was also available. Our food only took about 20 minutes to arrive which was a wonderful surprise. I ordered the Red Dragon roll and Catepillar roll. Keep in mind that their sushi menu puts together ALL the sushi rolls in one menu by alphabetical order which means it doesn't tell you how many pieces of sushi each roll has. The rolls were absolutely delicious! They definitely didn't skimp on any of the ingredients so everything was very flavorful. I tried a few of the other dishes such as the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue) and all were delicious. The food was well seasoned and savory. Try their namesake drink: a sake bomb! The bar area has a cool lounge feel that looks like I nice place to get drinks after work. The decor in the main restaurant is nice and has a good ambiance. Their sushi is good and is a great value since it's BOGO free. They have$8 lunch specials for Asian dishes such s Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai, Kung Pao, Vietnamese Pork , which include a soup or salad. I've had the Drunken Noodles a few times and enjoy. After a year in the area I think Sake Bomb has the best sushi in Durham. It has a very classy interior, great hours - open throughout the day and also all weekend - and great food. The cuts of fish to me are always most important and they haven't disappointed me yet. I tend to go for sushi, nigiri selection, and they do a great job making the rice, balling it just right, and providing a nice selection in the sushi combination. A little bonus, the included salad is done very well, well cut veggies and the dressing has more flavor than the competition. It's not the on menu, but if you ask they have hamachi kama, and they grill it just right. The staff is very friendly. The ambiance is a little dark but it's part of the classy feel. I highly recommend anyone who wants sushi in Durham to come by Sake Bomb. You'll have to drive pretty far to beat this place. Oh and before I forget: the Sake selection is great. The staff is easy to get advice from if you're not sure what you want. Just describe what you like, ask for advice, and start sampling their menu! read more

Ordered through GrubHub, where the order delivery time came up as 45 minutes. After 1 hour and 20 minutes, my wife called to check on the status of the order. They told us the driver had left 15 minutes ago. We were skeptical, because the restaurant is 10 minutes away, but OK. 30 minutes after that, still no food. This time, I call them. They tell me the driver left 20 minutes ago. I tell them this isn't true, because we were told something similar a half hour ago. At this point they tell me something that might or might not be true, that the first driver never showed up, and they had to call GrubHub twice to get a second driver. I don't actually believe this, because my wife and I were both told different stories before, but maybe that's true. Even if it is, they didn't apologize or seem worried about it. The food finally arrived after two hours. It was stone cold and soggy. I can't tell you 100% whose fault that was, but I can tell you I called GrubHub and they refunded my money instantly without asking questions -- and Sake Bomb didn't seem interested in helping at all. Similarly, at Sake Bomb, most days are BOGO for the sushi rolls. What stands out about Sake Bomb is its surprisingly trendy atmosphere inside (you can't tell from its boring outside). As other reviewers have mentioned, despite being located in a nondescript strip mall, the interior is nice and better than a few other sushi places I've been in Durham. The sushi roll menu is pretty large, and it took me awhile to decide what two rolls I wanted to get w/ the BOGO deal that they have everyday. I finally settled on the Red Dragon Roll and Poseidon Roll. Both turned out to be fantastic and fresh-tasting...some of the best sushi I've had for the price range (each $14, but with BOGO, together was $14 total). I was really tempted to get the Sake Bomb Roll after reading the reviews and the description on the menu, but it was $18...maybe another time. Overall, I would say that depending on what you order, this place is better than other sushi places in the area with comparable price range. I've previously only ordered takeout from here (via GrubHub). The service was fairly fast and the food was amazing! The sushi is very good. I love how they have also taken some liberties with the rolls. The BOGO sushi also lets you try all of these options. There was a land and sea roll which is an interesting twist. The other dishes are also great including hibachi and pho. There's such a large range of dishes that you can just keep going back to try more. The shopping complex is a bit dated, but the inside of the restaurant is cute. The artwork is pleasant. I enjoyed the black-and-white photography. I was also excited to learn that they have half-price sushi and half-price martinis on Thursdays. Woohoo!! I ordered the uptown metropolitan. The cup wasn't full, but I'll give them a pass since it was only half-price. For dinner, I started with the edamame. Then I had the ahi poke roll and volcano roll. They were both very good. The ahi poke roll was especially enjoyable. It was so light and fresh. Each piece was like eating a bite-sized salad with the perfect amount of tuna and crabmeat in each bite. Amazing!!! I order delivery from Sake Bomb pretty frequently. I love the sashimi combination, kaisou salad & miso soup. Sometimes my kids order extras like the crab rangoon or chicken tempura. We have always had a great meal & enjoyed every bit of it. The fish always tastes fresh & they always serve a good portion. I made a mistake by ordering from another restaurant bc I wanted some unagi (which sake bomb doesn't offer) but I regretted it as soon as the food arrived. (I'm sorry but it was Mr. Tokyo.) I will never order from them again (the sashimi was half frozen & they didn't send the entire order- leaving out almost half) & will continue to order from Sake bomb. Had so many options and all delicious. I grew up around a lot of Asian food in my life, and sometimes it's hard to find good stuff when I'm away from home. Don't let the strip mall exterior deceive you, Sake Bomb is a gem! My husband & I are regulars here, where we frequent the bar for attentive service and sushi that is always on point. In fact, it's never let us down. We like that it's got a low key vibe about it and it is reliable and yummy, without breaking the bank! The last two times we got it to take out, they quoted us 20 minutes and it took closer to 50; same story with eating there. Ordered take out and boy was I disappointed. I telephoned in my order and was told 15 min. I got there in 15 minutes and was told to hang on. They processed my payment and then I just sat there for another 10 minutes while my food was being prepared. This was not the end of the world. Just annoying. Anyways, I get home with my sushi (b1g1), pad see ew, and hibachi chicken. The sushi was ok. Nothing bad but nothing great either. It was the cooked food that was horrible. The hibachi chicken itself is dry. The sauce does not stick to the veg or chicken and was at a pool at the bottom of the container. The vegetables were mushy and disgusting. Tasted like they were rotten! The white sauce that comes with the hibachi was too sweet and did not taste right. Gross! The pad see ew was another fail. I added the pork to it and it was horribly cooked. The pork had the texture of rubber. It looked like it had been deep fried and was mostly fat. Also the brown sauce does not taste right on this one either. Too sweet again. At least nothing tasted like it was rotten though. Overall: ok for late night b1g1 sushi. Sake Bomb was my first attempt at sushi after moving from NYC to Durham in June 2016 and I had high hopes because of the great reviews and a couple in person recommendations. My daughter and I picked up a few rolls late on a Saturday after being out and about all day. I ran in to get our food and the place was nice inside in that standard "Asian decor" way. Our rolls looked pretty good. Deceptively so. I don't remember exactly which 3 special rolls we ordered but I do remember spitting out the white tuna and gagging (mmmm, sorry!) because the fish tasted repulsive. The rice was wet and overcooked. The only roll that was edible was deep fried with salmon and cream cheese inside and did not actually have raw fish in/on it. I think this might be the key to edible Triangle sushi -- cooked fish, over sauced, deep fried. read more

I don't find their food particularly good or bad authentic. Prices are moderate. Good for a group due to the diverse menu and sake bombs are always fun. Personally would not go on my own as the fish is not very high quality, too many rolls are basic spicy tuna, based around fried items, or "fusion" ingredients like cream cheese. Since I have extremely high standards for my Asian food I prefer to go to a place that specializes in specific cuisine, but I have friends who love it so it depends on your taste. read more

Yum! I'm so excited to have such a great restaurant nearby! As others have mentioned, the sushi is BOGO and is really delicious! I love that they have such a great variety of rolls, including plenty of spicy rolls (I love having a little heat besides wasabi!). They also have drink specials throughout the week. The last couple of times I've been there, I've noticed that a ton of people order takeout - their takeout counter was very popular! I've also ordered the pad see ew -- very yummy, with plenty of meat and bok choy. The green curry comes with 5 different spice levels and has a great complexity of flavor. The only dish I've been underwhelmed with is the General Tso's chicken -- it was not bad, but it wasn't really standout compared to the other great dishes I've had there. I've just spent a month in Hong Kong eating cheap and fresh and I am still so excited to eat here when I visit! When I lived in NC, I ate here at least once a week. BOGO sushi is what they serve in heaven. My favorite roll of all time is the Crunchy Salmon. My friends who also used to live in the area (now in DC) often reminisce about this roll. It doesn't exist anywhere else. True to my Wisconsin heritage, I also love the Fusion roll, because it has cheese and is fried. I've always gotten the sushi, but my sister loved her curry. I've very much enjoyed both times I have visited here! The sushi is BOGO (or, if you happen to be lucky, half off on some nights), but the rolls are a bit more expensive than some other BOGO places I have been to. It's worth it though! The spicy tuna roll was my least favorite because it was 1/3 spicy tuna and 2/3 cucumber, but other than that, all of the rolls I have had were great. The service is decent but not outstanding. I asked for soypaper instead of sea weed and my roll was completely wrapped in rice paper like a spring roll and was so small in diameter. I stopped by this place on my business trip. I tried a couple of rolls and they were OK - the flavor did not "pop" in my mouth. Interestingly, I ordered sushi nigiri and only received 2-3 thinly sliced meats with no rice. I did not realize that nigiri composition even open to chef's interpretation ... Ambiance was OK - looked like an American restaurant + sports bar - would not be able to tell if this is a sushi place ... I dont think I will be back. read more
