Looking to venture a little further from our neighborhood for a weekend lunch, we found Sake Bomb via some other good Yelp comments. We felt a little sheepish "cheating" on our neighborhood favorite of Shiki, but Sake Bomb is very good! I can't really speak much to atmosphere because we were one of only two or three parties in the whole place at the time. The decor is appropriately described by other reviewers. As others have mentioned, Sake Bomb offers the critical BOGO deal which makes it competitive. The roll offerings were a change of pace, but a lot of the classic favorites are enjoyable, too. We liked seeing a few rolls with jalapeno inside and the one that had pineapple was good too. Unfortunately, I can't remember the names of everything we ordered. Our server was friendly and full of suggestions. Final verdict: Very good, but not so different for us that we're going to abandon our local favorite. Almost all of the reviews have been about the sushi, which, I agree, is done very well. This review will be about the Vietnamese food, which most people won't know, is actually the best in Durham and Chapel Hill as well. When my boyfriend and I (we are both Vietnamese) first looked at the menu, we saw that it contained a lot of very traditional dishes, encompassing those served at other area Vietnamese restaurants. We saw dishes like Hu Tieu (Seafood Noodle Soup) and Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Beef Stew) offered on the menu and we instantly got excited at the prospect of a newcomer to a very dismal Vietnamese food scene in the triangle. We asked our waiter if the chef was Vietnamese and soon after, Thai, the co-owner of Sake Bomb and chef came out to talk to us about his hopes of introducing more authentic Vietnamese food to his menu. He talked to us about current dishes on the menu (he's really proud of the pho, the broth made especially from oxtail bones) as well as future dishes he'd like to add eventually. My boyfriend ordered Bun Thit Nuong (BBQ Pork Entree) which came with perfectly done vermicelli noodles, marinated pork and a bed of fresh veggies and fish sauce. The presentation was great and a huge portion too. My boyfriend really liked it and he said the meat was very moist and flavorful. I got the Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Beef Stew) which definitely reminded me of the home cooked bowls I used to eat during my childhood. On a separate occasion, we ordered the Crispy Fish, which is described as a "Saigon style crispy whole fresh Snapper and chili garlic sauce." This has been my absolute favorite so far as the whole fish came out delicately fried with a sweet chili pepper sauce. The fish was done perfectly. I would absolutely recommend this dish (which is huge so you can share it!). So although the sushi here is really really good, I want to spread the word that Sake Bomb serves up some really authentic and delicious Vietnamese food that definitely surpasses the other options in the area. The prices are just a bit higher, but I think it's very much worth it. And hopefully with more people ordering Vietnamese food, the chef will add even more of his specialties to the menu! read more

5 stars for the Vietnamese options, 3.5 stars for the sushi. Great atmosphere, service is spotty. Based on Christina P.'s review, we went there and ordered the Hu Tieu (seafood noodle soup) and the Pho (beef noodle soup). I got my Hu Tieu sans pork and asked them to just give me a little more of the seafood to make up for the pork. The broth of both noodle soups were amazing. The hu tieu was lighter, the pho more savory. The cuts of beef in the pho were good, not tough and gristly. The seafood in the soup was spot on. I got 2 of everything (2 scallops, mussels, & shrimp) for what I thought was replacement for the pork. But when the bill came, I was charged $3 for extra? I spoke with the manager about this and how I didn't get pork and the waitress didn't tell me there would be an extra charge for the seafood. She quickly rectified it. Our waitress, however, was not prepared to handle the Saturday crowd. We asked her 3 times for a water refill and some fish sauce, after she dropped off our bill she disappeared for the rest of the period and another waiter got the manager to address our issue and close us out. That brings me to service. The Saturday night we went, there were 2 hosts who spent most of their time at the entrance. I saw customers ask them about water, etc. And they would just ask the already stressed waiters. I don't understand why the hosts couldn't give water to people who had been seated ten minutes ago without having been waited on yet. Instead, people sat for ages waiting for checks, waters, sauces, little items that anyone can help with. I would go back for sure for the Vietnamese food. The sushi was good, but I prefer Sushi Love more. Sake Bomb's rolls w/ tempura items (soft shell crab, tempura shrimp, etc) are delicious. However, their over-use of spicy mayo really ruins the fresh rolls (like TNT). When a roll is just raw fish and avocado, you don't need to douse it with spicy mayo. Just let people enjoy the fresh fish you use. And every roll, whether it says it or not in the menu, has some spicy mayo inside of it. Overall, I really like Sake Bomb. They should encourage more responsiveness among the hosts and have more servers for Saturdays. Also, they should think about expanding their Viet options! read more

They have a large menu, with a good selection of Japanese, Vietnamese, and Thai dishes (I'm sure I'm leaving some out). We stuck to the sushi menu, and the fish was very fresh, as was the nori, and well-presented. There was one ingredient that wasn't quite fresh in one of the rolls, but that was taken care of satisfactorily. The service was excellent, maybe a little too eager, but since they haven't been open long, that's understandable. Decor and ambiance were good; music was low (mostly nostalgia pop). The prices were appropriate for the quality. And they're open Sunday. I'd give 4.5 stars if I could, and this is definitely on our list of nearby quality restaurants. Hmmm..a bit flummoxed by the high ratings for this average sushi joint. I guess they have cheap sushi deals? Well friends, (and by that I mean the one 'friend' I have on Yelp, shout out to Mr. David Z..!!) it takes this former New Yorker more than cheap sushi to get a high rating. I proudly declare myself a sushi snob. Hey, if I'm eating raw fish, I want it to be the best. That said, I'll take good. I know I'm not living on the coast or in a huge city. Now for the nuts and bolts--I got a shrimp tempura roll (not bad) and a spicy tuna roll which was not very good. On the plus side, if you order an edamame app, you get a LOT of edamame. It's almost like they gave you a half of the bag of frozen edamame you get at Trader Joe's!! The food was average at best. Service? Awful. We were a big party. Twice I had to get up and ask for some help. Very irritating. Most Japanese restaurants take their service very seriously, so this was extra disappointing. If you like Shiki but hate their service and long waits....try Sake Bomb! No seriously, try Sake Bomb. Located in a dingy strip mall in Durham, it can easily be missed and written off because the outside just looks so unappealing. But the interior is actually trendy and very nice! The service is so much better than Shiki's! My boyfriend and I were seated immediately, our waitress was fairly attentive and food was brought out in a reasonable amount of time. The sushi here is typically BOGO but on Tuesdays and Thursdays it is 1/2 off! So try to go on those days if you can, I much prefer 1/2 off. The sushi selection is extensive (similar to Shiki's). We ordered the Vegas Roll, the Blue Devil, Sweet Dragon and Red Dragon and all were delicious! Probably would be good with any roll you choose. It is definitely just as tasty as the sushi at Shiki's. I've had heir sashimi plates several times and I do prefer their sashimi to Shiki's, tastes fresher. Can't attest to any of their entrees but will probably come back to try one soon. We also ordered the salad with the ginger dressing and the thit nuong cuon (sorry I can't remember the american name for those summer rolls, beef summer rolls maybe?). We have come hear often since we moved and tonight was the first time that we got sushi rolls that were the size of hot dog. I asked for soypaper instead of sea weed and my roll was completely wrapped in rice paper like a spring roll and was so small in diameter. Sake bomb is one of the new sushi/asian fusion restaurants that has recently opened. My wife and I had sampled some of their food on a Sunday for lunch (appreciated them being open). The decor is nice and open, and the interior was top notch. A fully stocked bar, as well as pleasing sushi bar was noted as well!! When we at down, our waitress was right there with water fills, and recommendations. During our entire time there, we never had to get her, as she had anticipated our needs ahead of time. The food was delicious, on par and better than the other sushi restaurants in the triangle. I had ordered several sushi rolls, and they were well formed and fish tasted extremely fresh! The experiencee was very peaceful and relaxing...something that I cant say about some of the other sushi restaurants. For this, and the quality of food, they get five stars! read more

I stopped by this place on my business trip. I tried a couple of rolls and they were OK - the flavor did not "pop" in my mouth. Interestingly, I ordered sushi nigiri and only received 2-3 thinly sliced meats with no rice. I did not realize that nigiri composition even open to chef's interpretation ... One part is good for family, and other part have bar, good for spending time with friends. Price is reasonable. All rolls got 50% off. Just moved to the area; thought we'd try this place out. Didn't realize it was BOGO until our waiter told us. But it also includes the nigiri and hand rolls, so it wouldn't make sense to get them as you would be paying $15 and get your hand roll free (as opposed to getting another special roll). Looking at the menu, realized immediately that Agashi tofu... Should be Age Dashi. Fusion restaurant problems? The ambiance was also... very stock photo centric. Noticing the huge wall photos of pagodas and tea and other Japanese-esqe things. We ordered the vegetable tempura... and it should be renamed to carrot (and broccoli and onion) tempura. The sushi... was definitely sub-par. The fish did not taste fresh. The wasabi was fairly diluted. We also got a beer with our order and there was a promo going on for Lagunitas beer. I don't often feel such strong negativity towards a restaurant, but this was really bad. I ordered the 3 roll lunch special, which seemed like a great deal! Unfortunately, the tuna was VERY light pink instead of a deep red, the rice was wet, the rolls were drenched in soy sauce, and the eel had a lot of slimy skin. The worst part was the Hot and Sour soup, which smelled so bad that I had to take it out of the office. I didn't even consider eating the soup based on the smell. The sight of the low quality tuna kept me from eating that as well. I just hope I don't get sick from what I did eat before throwing it away. My two other coworkers had similarly bad experiences with their orders. One coworker ordered the Land and Sea roll that had very dry filet over top, and a greasy roll beneath. The lady that took our order was friendly, but that is the only positive thing I can say about this experience. Maybe it was bad because it was slow at lunchtime? Maybe it's different in the evening? BOGO sushi is apparently a thing in the Raleigh-Durham area, and I'm a fan. Sake Bomb is great though. I wouldn't peg it as a place to actually do Sake Bombs (it's pretty nice inside), but the sake and beer have reasonable prices, and the sushi is a steal. I love sushi, and they do it pretty well here. The fancier roles are fun and flavorful, and the classics are standard. There was absolutely no crowd, and they had a back lounge area that would be great for intimate gatherings. Though the location is kind of random, I'm a fan of the food and atmosphere. There is plenty of seating in the main restaurant, and the booths are nice and comfortable. One con was that our waiter didn't really know much about the different sake options. When the menu has a bunch of different sake options, I would like some advice. There are many other sushi places around the area, but I liked Sake Bomb a lot. This place has a lot of different foods, but we came mainly for their BOGO sushi rolls. They have a HUGE variety of rolls to choose from, and they are ALL buy one get one free. This brings the prices of each roll from $12-18 to $6-9 ish. Sweet deal. The quality of most of the sushi is not bad. We ordered 8 rolls between the four of us, and left feeling pretty satisfied. The sushi came out in a wooden boat thing, which we found pretty amusing. The one roll that stuck out to me most was the "Master's Roll"? I think. It was basically yellowtail inside, yellowtail on top (I love my hamachi). But I think in general, the rolls are very delicious, so feel free to read their descriptions and choose accordingly. Be careful though: I wasn't a huge fan of the rolls with cream cheese in them. But if you're into that, then knock yourself out. They also do have a full bar here, in case you're in the mood for some booze with your sushi. Also, the service here was impeccable: I found our waiter extremely friendly and personable, and he served us like we were the only customers (although the place did have a good number of customers then). This is definitely my favorite place now to grab sushi in Durham (haven't checked out Vine yet, looking forward to doing so). The menu is fairly similar to Sushi Love. The rolls are large, tasty and fairly priced (half off tues/thus and bogo always as others have mentioned). I've gone three times now and the quality of the sushi has been consistent on each visit. The prices are completely fair for what you are getting and they host a nice drink special every night (there were $2 bottles of a craft beer from Wisconsin my last visit). The ambience of the restaurant is top notch, a cozier space than Mt. Fuji and Sushi Love for sure. Which is shocking considering it is a fairly ghetto looking space from the outside. We all know that the Triangle (and more specifically Durham) isn't the sushi capital of the world. But, for Durham, this place is pretty darn good. The owner is a relative of the owner of Sushi Love on Erwin, and the menus are basically the same. It's a traditional BOGO place, and the sushi is pretty fresh and there's a good selection of sashimi, nigiri, and specialty rolls. Plus, if you're in a party with some folks who do not like sushi, there are a lot of other options. A friend who tried the drunken noodles said they were pretty good. It's in a strip mall next to a K-Mart, but the inside feels like you're in a sushi restaurant in a bigger city (e.g. slightly over-the-top white and red decorating, lots of mirrors, and almost garish lighting). A solid bet for sushi, especially in this part of town. Two specialty rolls came to $12 before tax and tip. read more

Sake bomb is pretty much Shiki with less people. The sushi is slightly smaller but that wasn't a problem for me since I can't eat a lot at once anyways. The sweet dragon roll was ON POINT. I will definitely be going back for that on their half sushi days! We also got the volcano and scary spider rolls which both equally good but not as memorable as the sweet dragon. I thought the volcano roll had masago on it, but ours didn't seem to have anything but the spicy mayo mix. Maybe it was just mixed in well enough for me not to realized it was there since I'm not the biggest fan of masago. I've had the drunken noodles before as well. It comes out on an enormous plate but overall, I thought the flavor was a little bland and maybe oily? I don't know what it was about the dish but it made me a little nauseas after the meal. While in the neighborhood for work, my coworkers and I were in need of a mid-day nosh. Using my trusty Yelp application, I determined that Sake Bomb was near by and got good reviews. When we pulled our car into the parking lot, I must confess that I doubted my fellow Yelpers. From the slightly seedy placement in the strip mall to the blacked out windows, I wasn't sure if I was about to walk into a restaurant or if I should get my singles out for the strippers. Luckily, I trusted in my fellow Yelper and was not let down. Despite the outside appearance, the inside was pleasant and extremely welcoming. The food was delicious and the portions were monsterous. We are so relieved to have found Sake Bomb! After our last outing at Shiki, we were really disappointed that our favorite sushi/asian restaurant had become so terrible. The place looks scary and small from the outside. Inside, how ever, it is very nice and roomy. Kinda like stepping into the Tardis. Hands down, the best Sushi I have ever had. Period. And with Buy one Get one free! The place has a very diverse selection of Sake. When I went, the waitress was knowledgeable in the diversities of each brand. It was a nice surprise to actually be able to choose Sake like you would any other wine. I selected one based on her recommendation and it was dry and fruity: delicious. I have had less then favorable service on one occasion. But everyone has bad days. But out of all the problems they had that night, the food was not one of them. All in all I give the place 5 stars. If I had to complain about something, it would be the mixed drinks. they seem to under pour the booze and overload you on mixer. But I always get Sake. So, not a huge deal for me. read more

Sake bomb has become my go-to restaurant when I'm eating out with a friend. Not only is their sushi good, especially for BOGO, but their other menu items are great as well! We started off with a chicken papaya salad, and although it wasn't as good as other Thai restaurants, it was still fine (quite sweet) and presented better than I've ever seen papaya salad presented. For my entree, it came with a choice of miso soup and house salad, and my house salad looked fancy compared to other places that offer the same thing. I'm talking about a nice wide bowl, not a cup size, with fresh mixed greens, tomato wedges, cucumber slices, tasty ginger dressing, and topped with fried wonton strips. The massaman curry was SO good and also beautifully presented. I decided to go with veggies and no meat, and I received lots of colorful veggies! Another pleasant surprise! My curry had potatoes, onions, green beans, broccoli, orange/red bell peppers, roasted cashews, and topped with avocado slices. And it was all delicious. Even the service was fantastic. Our server paced everything perfectly. Our appetizer came out first and then our miso soup/salad, and when we were finished with the starters, our entrees arrived. Wonderful! The name Sake Bomb typically invokes the image of a beer and a shot glass of sake, where you bang on the table like an infant only to chug the finished product like a freshman in their first year of college. But this place is far from it. My friends and I decided to go to Sake Bomb over the trendy but unoriginal Shi Ki sushi for homecoming weekend because a small asian girl with a small dog recommended we try it. When in Rome, right? We arrived at Sake Bomb after purchasing some black and milds for later and sat at the table for an hour while our asian friend found her way there from The Great Wall. Our server was friendly and also looked like she was ready to get blitzed by a linebacker. After boring us with drink specials she knew good and well we'd never order, we ordered the cheapest Fat Tire and were well on our way. The only mistake she made was agreeing to charge my tacky friend's phone. Really? It's your job to be professional regardless of how sleazy someone is. The customer is always right until he makes a terrible mistake like this one. I don't care if he had a great haircut. The menu is long. I mean, too long. I don't have time to read through 400 different roles, but thankfully, I managed to pick the two best rolls on the menu according to myself and the rest. How I manage to keep succeeding is beyond me. We ordered like 8 different rolls and I won't bore you with the details. They were all delicious ONLY if you get the eel sauce on them. I say this because one person wanted to keep it on the side, and like the good compromiser I am, I categorically refused to go along, forced the table to order the eel sauce, and they praised me afterwards. Don't let yourself fall victim to your own stupidity. My favorite was some roll covered in sriracha because the morning after, my stools came out soft and solid, leaving a slight burning sensation, almost like I had also been out drinking till 2, then greyed out until 4:30, only to wake up in time to eat country fried steak at Denny's. Sake Bomb gets 3 stars for agreeing to charge my friends phone and costing me far too much for a buy one get one free deal. When I called to share the news, hoping for a refund or just 2 hibachi replacements, the bartender was so rude, and there apparently is no manager available at 430 pm on a Wednesday. First came a wonderful hot and sour soup which was loaded with black mushrooms and which was very pleasingly spicy. Along with this came a salad with a ginger dressing that really popped. That was a great start. The churashi was loaded with wonderfully fresh sliced fish, rice and salad. The sushi and sashimi plate was beautifully presented and came with a bounty of fresh, delicately sliced, fish. Its close to my house, so already I'm a fan. Restaurant itself doesn't do delivery, but you can order online through Takeout Central, though keep in mind TC doesn't list basic sushi rolls (think spicy tuna or California roll) but the restaurant does serve them. We ate in store today, trendy sushi joint decor (think clean lines, low lighting, weirdly shaped light fixtures). We were seated in the drink-bar area, which was being waited by the bartender, so things took a little while, but he was really pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful, so we didn't mind the wait. 2 standard rolls, 4 specialty rolls, and 4 pieces of nigiri ran us $50 before tip, and all were tasty. I was a little disappointed with the craftsmanship of the roll (loosey goosey rice, unevenly sliced pieces, a couple of half-filled end pieces) but that didn't take away from the great flavors and combinations. Very tasty all around. Also important to note: BOGO is ALL THE TIME. Order an even number of rolls and they will take the cheapest half off the ticket. So, keep in mind that if you order 2 specialty rolls at $13 each and 2 orders of nigiri at $8 each, your order will be discounted $16 not $21. I've been to Sake Bomb a few times for lunch so thought I would update my review. I still think this is a good place for sushi. Lots of choices for all kind of rolls. They also do the bogo thing so keep that in mind. On my most recent visit I ordered the green tea and miso (horny) * soup. Both were a great addition along with the sushi. My family frequents this restaurant and it's a solid place to get some good Asian food. We've never been here when it was crowded and service is fairly fast and not too bad. We're always served by the same waiter and he does a great job. The interior of the restaurant feels a little dark, but I can see how that appeals to the hipper and younger crowd. There are also two sides -- one is the main dining room and one is for the bar, mostly. My appetizer recommendations are: chicken lettuce wraps and calamari. The chicken lettuce wraps are just super tasty and not as heavy (so you still have room in your stomach for the main course) and they fry the calamari and give you two yummy sauces. Avoid the Korean short ribs -- those are usually overcooked. My brother really loves their sushi deal -- you can get two for the price of one at all times, I think, so it's pretty great. I've had their pho, which isn't amazing (but it's passable if you go there and decide that you just reeeeaaally want it, I guess) because they cut the meat too thickly. Their Bun Bo Hue is okay. I wasn't a huge fan of the acidity in the soup. I'm a big fan of their curry dishes -- they give you a lot of curry and some rice, so I actually wind up wrapping up a lot of my curry to take home for later. I have come here a few times for dinner and for lunch. Their sushi is not the best but pretty decent. Some rolls are worse than others. It's usually the place I get my Togo orders from. Its BOGO, but they have inflated the prices on each roll. I had their thai food and that was pretty good. Nicely portioned. Great lunch deals. Came here after 9pm on a Sunday night with a group of 7. First things first: BOGO sushi at seemingly all times makes this a great place for anyone that likes specialty rolls and sashimi. My buddy and I split 4 rolls and 4 orders of sashimi and I had no complaints. In particular, the green monster and ocean fire rolls were my favorites. The yellowtail and tuna in particular were especially fresh and clean tasting. With it being so late on a Sunday, I was particularly impressed that everything tasted so high quality. On top of sushi/sashimi, I was able to try the Tom Kha chicken soup, Drunken Noodles, Goat Curry, and Chicken Thai Basil. All these dishes were tasty and wonderful but the goat curry was greatness. Sushi is my favorite, but if I ever return here in a smaller group, I will be torn between ordering the sushi and the goat curry. It was that good. It had just the right mixture of spices, and the curry sauce was great by itself with white rice. Since it was late Sunday night, it was rather empty so I can't speak to the expected ambiance. Saki Bomb has the best sushi in the area. The ambiance is sophisticated and fun, the service is attentive, the cocktails rock, and the food is excellent in taste and presentation. I highly recommend the Samurai Roll and a French Martini. read more

The menu was creative~ Sushi mostly are good, ~But I could only give one star for.the service and altitute of the manager. Because you really really need patience to wait for them, mentally prepared for one hour was pretty appropriate. When we complained, the manager take her time to walk out and even emphasized three times to us that their sushi need 30mins to cook and how their average waiting time is 40mins+. The manager thinks our 40mins does not even worth the compensation of one 5 dollar seaweed salad. And, her reason is-- everyone else who is waiting for 40mins or even longer did not get anything, so we are not supposed to get anything~Honestly, that should mean everyone should get something free. Or you should get more employees. I have been to so many sushi restaurants across the U.S., not any one of them is as slow as this one. Great service and great sushi. Always two for one on the rolls. Sit in the bar area so you won't have to smell the awful chemicals from the nail salon next door.
