They answered all of my questions about my plants, recommended what I needed, and even suggested more affordable options. I also got a healthy cucumber plant and received some coupons, which was a nice bonus. I forgot to ask the name of the tall older gentleman at the register, but he was incredibly helpful. Thank you! I'll definitely be back for the orchids--they're beautiful, and the nursery has an amazing selection of plants.

There are several major north-south roads in this area, and Rosemead Boulevard is one of them. San Gabriel Boulevard is another. The road is wide and easy to drive. The nursery is right across the street from Com Tam Kieu Restaurant, one of the better Vietnamese broken rice restaurants in Southern California. On the way there, I passed a construction site, probably a new apartment building. It strongly gave me the impression of an EB-5 green card project, the kind of real estate development marketed less as a normal apartment building and more as an immigration investment package for Chinese buyers. In the middle of the SGV, that feeling was hard to miss. After that came the nursery. I drove from north to south, made a left turn onto a smaller street, and parked outside. The entrance is tiny. You walk through it and immediately reach the counter, where there was even a line. After that, you pass into an indoor room stocked with fertilizers, plant stakes, soil, mulch, and other gardening supplies. Beyond that is the back garden, which is much larger than expected and quite elegant. The plants are clearly well cared for, and the stone sculptures give the place a strong hint of Chinese culture. Along the edge of the main building, there are stacks of Buddha heads, seated Buddhas, and other stone figures, mostly in Chinese Buddhist or imagined Buddhist styles, though not necessarily following any strict traditional standard. There are Chinese signs everywhere, which makes sense for a nursery in the middle of the SGV. Many of the plants have bilingual names. The prices are not cheap, but they are fair. The orchids are much more expensive than what you would find at Trader Joe's or Costco, but they are also more beautiful and much stronger, so I would not call them overpriced. The plants use different colored tags, similar to what you see in many American discount stores. Some are very cost-effective. It is definitely worth stopping by, and even more worth it if you happen to find some good discounted plants. The cashier was a little rude, but as a Chinese person, I found it completely acceptable. I have seen much worse. Even though she was in a rush, the service was not bad. She even gave me an extra bag so the soil would not spill in my car. Overall, this is a good nursery and I would recommend it. It is even better if you understand Chinese culture, because many of the details will make more sense.

I've picked up a miracle fruit tree, passion fruit, and wax apples here, and I'm already planning to come back for a sapodilla and sugar apple if he has them in stock. If you're into rare fruit trees, you'll probably find yourself wandering around longer than you planned. The owner reminds me of Deebo from Friday (the movie). He's usually cruising around the nursery on his beach cruiser with a serious look on his face, making rounds and checking on the trees. He isn't the type to walk you through the nursery or give you a guided tour. If you have questions, you'll probably need to flag him down yourself. The funny thing is he kind of grows on you. His answers are usually short and to the point, and if you're serious about varieties, you'll want to do your own research because the labeling can be a little sketchy and his answers aren't always crystal clear. What won me over is that he's fair on pricing and willing to negotiate. On larger trees, I've been able to bargain him down close to 30%, often even a lot more. That's getting harder and harder to find these days at other nurseries. It's definitely not the polished nursery experience you'll get at some of the other places, but that's part of the charm. Good inventory, good deals, and a memorable owner. I'm not making this stuff up. You just have to come experience it yourself. Maybe go on a Friday! :P

When we arrived, we realized we went to the wrong location (our first visit to Mimosa Nursery was somewhere else apparently!) But we still found what we needed. It was a little hard to find at first, so when you arrive, you might not really see the entrance, so I'll attach photos of what to look for. We were the only ones there, got help when we needed it, and found what we were looking for. It's self-guided; no one greeted us or spoke to us until we needed someone to talk to. The people we were speaking with were knowledgeable about their plants and helpful in packing it so dirt wouldn't fall out. Super easy for us to get in & get out, and I'm sure we'll be coming back again for more!

And if you do, don't trust their haul-away service. After our refrigerator broke, we immediately went to Home Depot to find a replacement. We waited for the scheduled delivery date and for haul-away service we paid for for the old refrigerator. The delivery people brought the new fridge in and took the old fridge out. We thought everything was settled. Wrong. Imagine our surprise when someone passing by your house asked us whether we knew there was a fridge outside our house. We checked outside and, sure enough, our old fridge had been ditched on the sidewalk. Well, part of the old fridge. The main body of the fridge was gone, but the doors, shelves, and drawers were strewn about, with much of the plastic and glass shattered and scattered. Apparently, the delivery crew had taken the old fridge out to the street and decided to only take part of the fridge. Or maybe they had left the entire thing, and someone else had come to take part of it and trash the rest. Either way, there was now a hazardous mess on the sidewalk and street. Confused, we called Home Depot and explained the situation. We were told that the delivery crew had decided not to take our old fridge after all, citing an odor as their reason. What the heck? Why hadn't they just come back to the front door to let us know they weren't taking the fridge? If they were going to back out of the agreement we had paid for, why not at least let us know? Also, guess why the old fridge had an odor in the first place. Because it took Home Depot three tries to send us a fridge that could actually fit through our doorway, despite us supplying exact measurements. Therefore, instead of being replaced by a new fridge and hauled away immediately, the broken fridge was sitting there for over a week. Of course it had a weird smell! Anyways, back to the phone call. Appliance support told us that the delivery crew had changed their minds and there was nothing they could do except give us a refund of the haul-away service. Okay, thanks. But what about the illegal dumping of appliance parts on a busy sidewalk? Nope, said appliance support. There was nothing they could do about that. Too bad, so sad, pay someone else to come get it. Now, why on earth would the customer have to pay to haul away trash that a company had dumped illegally after it was already in their possession? I have no freaking clue. One thing I do know though is that I am NOT buying appliances from Home Depot ever again. Who knows? Maybe they'll next arbitrarily decide to break the five year warranty we paid for without telling us.
