I drove across Los Angeles during rush hour traffic to make it here and it was more than worth it! Not sure any higher praise exists. Nuccio's has the largest selection of camellias and azaleas that I've found yet. They've been family owned and operated since 1935 and when you visit, you can really tell how much love and care has gone into this place. I came in search of some more rare satsukis and Tom spent nearly an hour with me, walking through the nursery and telling me about the different varieties they have. He was extremely knowledgeable and helped me select plants that were likely to have more variegation / flower variety. They only accept cash, but the prices are unbeatable! $8-$10 for a gallon sized plant. Tom even gifted me 2 additional smaller plants that he thought I would like based on my prior selection. Thank you Tom!!! You can order plants from them online and have them mailed to you, but I highly recommend coming in person if you're able to, especially during the flowering months. I will definitely be back as soon as I can!

It's a pity that part of Nuccio's nursery was ruined by the wild fire. They still have quite some beautiful camellia survived and very worth a visit.

To Jim and Tom: Thank you for your kindness to me over the years. You always gave me discounts because I cataloged Camellia books at the Huntington Library. It was always a treat going up to see all the beautiful Camellias and Azaleas. I will miss Nuccio's forever.

I imagine Nuccio (noo cho) has every  kind of camellias & azaleas in the known world.  Huge acreage is devoted to the propagation and cultivation of these ideal for shade evergreen garden varieties. I love Camellia japonica & Camellia sasanqua for their colourful blooms of red, pink, white in delicate single, double flowers as well as some that look like delicate, chiffon, multi-petaled Peonies.  Their thick, glossy, shiny, dark green leaves look like gem quality nephrite. Nuccio's also has rare scented camellias. Most camellias, no matter how showy, have no scent. So Tom Nuccio, owner & expert horticulturalist, took me around to find the two delicately scented varieties that had flowers which are beautiful as well as having a perfumed fragrance. While we walked around, we talked about his travels to Italy as a college student and also going to Japan later in life since most of the camellias are of Japanese origin, hence the species name, japonica. Tom talked about seeing a 300 hundred year old camellia about a foot in diameter owned by the same family in Kyōto, the ancient capital for Japan for 1,200 years.   We both were in awe that many sites wherever you go in Italy & Japan are hundreds if not thousands of years old while in America, except Native American finds, we're impressed if it's 300 years old.   I got my one gallon sized Minato no Akebono/Harbour Dawn which is Camellia ryūkyūensis from the southernmost Japanese island archipelago, a vibrant pink, single petaled cousin of Japonica, and the pink, double peony-like High Fragrance, Camellia japonica. Tom and his helpmate were friendly, cordial, informative, knowledgeable. They accept cash or personal checks which show their trust in human nature.  If you want to see the majority of camellias in bloom so "What you see is what you get.", come during their blooming season which is late fall to late winter/end of February. Great place to get very specialized Camellias and azaleas in a profusion of varieties. Nuccio's the place to go. 5 stars

This place has a ton of selection and a very knowledgeable staff. You can tell the staff members about the area where you want to plant, full or half day of sunlight, color(s), scented, etc. Any of the staff members can properly advise of what to select. What to be more creative? Ask a team member how to graph and they'll gladly show you. Additionally, how to care for your plant(s) after purchase. The facility is quite large, so wear comfortable walking shoes to venture through the whole property. It's very relaxing. My only gripe is that they only accept cash or check, no credit cards. I had to leave and return after visiting an ATM.

We had our hands full with leftovers, the boy, and the dog so we were firmly in the browse zone. Then Vik jumps in the mix, calls the boy kiddo and asks if he wants to pet some fish. At this point, I'm intrigued and want to see where this goes, and you know what? He pet some of the koi fish in the pond, I have to admit I haven't seen that before (Kiddo was too scared to try). But THEN he starts telling us about these two plants next to the pond -- Mexican Mint and Sage -- and how their smell repels mosquitos. Kiddo has a huge bug bite on his leg, so the sale was pretty much instant. I planted them in my backyard this afternoon. So, this four star review is a five because of Vic and his kid charming skills. Four stars is because I wish they had a few more native options, but I'll go back because Vik made the experience.

We hired them for a full backyard Reno with full wall of ficus trees, full DG backyard with gravel edges, and a wood fence. Everything was going smoothly with scheduling and communication. When the actual work got started, I noticed the DG was not high-quality. It contained a lot of large rocks. Also, they were not digging out enough dirt before laying the DG. I had to bring that up to the foreman and they did dig up some more dirt before laying the DG. When the work was done, a foreman did a quick walk-through with me and I thought everything looked good. We were told not to walk on the wet DG for a day or two. So two days later when I did a better inspection, I started to notice a lot of shotty work. Specifically with the bender board dividing the gravel and I noticed that they used really small nails for the wooden fence. They did come back a month later to fix the DG because there were areas that were "bouncy", as if not enough DG was laid down. They had to dig up big rocks that were preventing the DG from compacting and they laid more DG on some areas. They also tried to fix some bender board problems, but they did a really horrible job. Three months later, some wood planks on our wood fence start curving and popping up. I called the company because our DG and our fence are under a year warranty. Jake asked me to email him with photos and he said he would call back to schedule a day for repair. Since then I have not heard back from them; they have completely ghosted me. I waited a month then I started calling and no one will pick up the phone. I've left messages and I sent text messages to project manager, Amanda, who was great at communication at first, but now has completely ghosted me as well. Meanwhile, we're still paying monthly for this backyard that is falling apart way too quickly. I'm going to just hire someone to fix the fence before it damages further. I would not recommend them again. Completely overpriced for what you get.

Spoiler alert: it involves dead plants, brazen lies, and a disappearing act that would impress Houdini. ACT I: THE SETUP (Or: How to Exploit Fire Victims 101) February 2025. A massive wildfire devastated the community. Enter BLVD Nursery with their magnanimous "sale to help locals rebuild" promotion. How charitable. How community-minded. How convenient for moving questionable inventory. We walked in needing tall privacy screen plants--actual functional barriers. But before dropping hard-earned cash, we asked the obvious question any sentient consumer would ask: "What happens if these don't make it?" Sales rep Ramon--whose name adorns our receipt like a signature on a warranty--delivered the magic words: "No worries, we'll help figure something out." That verbal commitment sealed the deal. That assurance is why they got our money. ACT II: THE PLOT TWIST (Or: Dead Plants Tell No Tales) Fast forward less than 6 months. 4 of 5 plants? Deceased. Expired. Pushing up daisies, if they had the energy. Not struggling valiantly in challenging conditions--flat-out dead. Skeletal sticks mocking our privacy needs. The 5th plant? Thriving magnificently. Lush. Healthy. Living its best botanical life. Same yard. Same soil. Same watering regimen. Same sun exposure. Same everything. That one survivor is not just a plant--it's a witness. It's prosecutorial evidence. It screams "the problem wasn't the care, genius--it was your defective batch." 80% mortality rate? In horticulture, in medicine, in law, in any field requiring competence, that's what we call "catastrophic failure." ACT III: THE GASLIGHTING (Or: Receipts About Receipts) Sent a professional email to BLVD. Courteous tone. Documented facts. Referenced verbal warranty. Requested resolution per their commitment. BLVD's response arrived like a condescending pat on the head: "All plants are final sale." This is noted in our receipts, they said. Interesting claim. Bold assertion. One tiny problem: it's demonstrably false. We retrieved our receipt. Read every syllable, every punctuation mark, examined it like the Zapruder film looking for evidence... There's ZERO "final sale" language. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not hidden in fine print. Not implied through cosmic interpretation. Not encoded in secret nursery hieroglyphics. Completely absent. So we did what one does when caught in someone's lie: we sent them a copy of their own receipt, highlighting the glaring absence of this alleged policy. ACT IV: THE VANISHING (Or: Ghosting as a Business Strategy) Sent: Receipt proving the BLVD Nursery statement was fiction. Received: Complete. Radio. Silence. Tumbleweeds rolling through our inbox. The sound of one hand clapping. The void staring back. BLVD got caught manufacturing policy from thin air, confronted with their own documentation proving it, and their sophisticated response strategy? Disappear like a deadbeat dad avoiding child support. Impressive commitment to accountability there, BLVD. ACT V: THE PATTERN (Or: A Masterclass in Dubious Business Practices) Here's BLVD Nursery's playbook, broken down for those taking notes: 1. Position yourself as 'community support' post-disaster. 2. Make verbal warranties to seal transactions. 3. Sell defective merchandise (apparently quality control is optional). 4. When confronted, claim non-existent policies "on receipts." 5. When proven wrong with *actual* receipts, ghost customers entirely. 6. Keep money, ignore problems, repeat. Cha-ching! (BONUS: Executed during a community disaster. Classy.) That's the company. That's the character. That's the culture. That's the moral calculus that tells you everything about integrity at BLVD NURSERY: a spectacular lack thereof. ACT VI: THE VERDICT (Or: Grand Finale: It's Curtains For You) If you enjoy throwing your money at defective dying plants while being lied to, by all means, patronize BLVD Nursery. They've perfected this particular genre of customer service. For the rest of us who appreciate honesty, living plants, and businesses that don't play games, there are better options. Our advice? Save yourself the aggravation and avoid BLVD Nursery completely. Consider this an ACTUAL community service... You've been warned.

Before buying, we asked what happens if they don't survive. Sales rep: "No worries, we'll help and figure something out." 4 of 5 died in less than 6 months. (The fifth is thriving - proving it wasn't the care.) When we reached out, they claimed "all sales are final" and that this is noted on receipts. Our receipt has **NO such language.** When we sent them a copy proving this, they've ignored us completely. 80% failure rate. False statements about their policies. Then radio silence when caught. Hard pass on BLVD. Go to Armstrong Garden Centers instead (352 E Glenarm St, Pasadena - 626-799-7139). Armstrong is employee-owned, has been serving California for 130 years, offers ACTUAL LIFETIME GUARANTEES on plants (not fake verbal promises), and their staff actually responds when there's an issue and with integrity. Or, Lincoln Ave Nursery (804 Lincoln Ave, Pasadena - 626-792-2138) also has excellent selection and personalized customer care. You'll pay about the same but at these places you get plants that survive AND customer service that honors commitments. Lesson learned: shop somewhere with real guarantees that actually stand behind their products. (NOTE: Photo shows what $600+ gets you at BLVD - dead sticks that were supposed to be a privacy screen. Note the thriving plants in the background? Those are from Armstrong Pasadena. Same yard, same care, completely different results.)

Little small cute nursery tucked in Pasadena that has been passed down from generations before. Japanese owned by cousins. Don't expect a big fancy facility. Think small, family size, run down with character and many generations of love. Some of their David Austins: Strawberry Hill, Claire Austin, Teasing Georgia, Tranquility, Queen of Sweden, Mary Rose, Princess Alexandria of Kent, Crown Princess Margareta, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Olivia Rose, Charles Darwin, Carding Mill (tree form), Charlotte Rose, and many many more! They have an ENTIRE SECTION just for these beauties! 15 of my DAs are from here because they have the best price and best customer service! One of the owners, Dale, is so kind, helpful and knowledgable. He spends his time explaining everything and answering all my questions. He's very generous to even help us to the car. I left my number with Dale so when and if he gets more DAs, he will call me. What a great guy, right!?! That's what I call good customer service! I love this place and keep on coming back because it's family owned, kind owners, unbeatable prices, and willing to share their knowledge and wisedom. 100% recommend this gem!
