Met one of Nuccio's owner today Jim. He had a huge abundance of knowledge about camellias and azaleas. I showed him a picture of the camellia plant I have at home and he was able to tell me exactly what the correct name of that particular camellia I had! With his advice I brought home 3 more camellias (Nuccio pearl (white on inside with pink edges), spring fling (red), and Elizabeth weaver (pink)) Also bought some azaleas too! He has camellias at all sorts of sizes and different prices, starting at $15 for one gallon and $50 for 5 gallons which is the cheapest I've been able to find. He has bigger ones but that's all my car could fit. Overall an awesome nursery with the nicest and most knowledgeable employees. If you're interested in any of these plants definitely make it a point to come see them soon, they will be closing shop and retiring at end of this year read more

I drove across Los Angeles during rush hour traffic to make it here and it was more than worth it! Not sure any higher praise exists. Nuccio's has the largest selection of camellias and azaleas that I've found yet. They've been family owned and operated since 1935 and when you visit, you can really tell how much love and care has gone into this place. I came in search of some more rare satsukis and Tom spent nearly an hour with me, walking through the nursery and telling me about the different varieties they have. He was extremely knowledgeable and helped me select plants that were likely to have more variegation / flower variety. They only accept cash, but the prices are unbeatable! $8-$10 for a gallon sized plant. Tom even gifted me 2 additional smaller plants that he thought I would like based on my prior selection. Thank you Tom!!! You can order plants from them online and have them mailed to you, but I highly recommend coming in person if you're able to, especially during the flowering months. I imagine Nuccio (noo cho) has every  kind of camellias & azaleas in the known world.  Huge acreage is devoted to the propagation and cultivation of these ideal for shade evergreen garden varieties. I love Camellia japonica & Camellia sasanqua for their colourful blooms of red, pink, white in delicate single, double flowers as well as some that look like delicate, chiffon, multi-petaled Peonies.  Their thick, glossy, shiny, dark green leaves look like gem quality nephrite. Nuccio's also has rare scented camellias. Most camellias, no matter how showy, have no scent. So Tom Nuccio, owner & expert horticulturalist, took me around to find the two delicately scented varieties that had flowers which are beautiful as well as having a perfumed fragrance. While we walked around, we talked about his travels to Italy as a college student and also going to Japan later in life since most of the camellias are of Japanese origin, hence the species name, japonica. Tom talked about seeing a 300 hundred year old camellia about a foot in diameter owned by the same family in Kyōto, the ancient capital for Japan for 1,200 years.   We both were in awe that many sites wherever you go in Italy & Japan are hundreds if not thousands of years old while in America, except Native American finds, we're impressed if it's 300 years old.   I got my one gallon sized Minato no Akebono/Harbour Dawn which is Camellia ryūkyūensis from the southernmost Japanese island archipelago, a vibrant pink, single petaled cousin of Japonica, and the pink, double peony-like High Fragrance, Camellia japonica. Tom and his helpmate were friendly, cordial, informative, knowledgeable. They accept cash or personal checks which show their trust in human nature.  If you want to see the majority of camellias in bloom so "What you see is what you get.", come during their blooming season which is late fall to late winter/end of February. The nursery is open 5 days a week, and Tom Nuccio lives on-site. A great place to bring your children to witness ornamental horticulture by legitimate pioneers in the trade. They will offer knowledge for newbies or the seasoned old pros that can't be learned in schools or books. They know the earth. This place has a ton of selection and a very knowledgeable staff. You can tell the staff members about the area where you want to plant, full or half day of sunlight, color(s), scented, etc. Any of the staff members can properly advise of what to select. What to be more creative? Ask a team member how to graph and they'll gladly show you. Additionally, how to care for your plant(s) after purchase. The facility is quite large, so wear comfortable walking shoes to venture through the whole property. It's very relaxing. My only gripe is that they only accept cash or check, no credit cards. My landscape designer recommended this place. They have been in business for a long time and specialize in camellias and azaleas. They have a huge variety of them and it's hard to keep yourself in control when you are here. I finally bought several of their specialty camellias called Nuccio's. They look so perfect you would think they are not real. Overall, the prices are very reasonable and the service is really nice. My husband and I went to Nuccio's today to check out the nursery after reading about it in the LA Times last month. Growing up in this area and neither of us even knowing it existed made us both curious, especially after reading about the amazing history of this place, which has been here for over 75 years, and always in the same small family, which is simply unheard of in this day and age. They are experts and have cultivated hundreds of varieties of camellias, and provided plants to iconic institutions such as Descanso Gardens and The Huntington Library. They've won awards all over the globe for their beautiful plants. It's really something special. We were approached by Tom Nucchio, one of the remaining brothers who runs the place and still lives on the grounds. He is a marvel. He is a walking encyclopedia of all things Camellia (and azalea too I'm sure). He is the sweetest, nicest guy you could ever want to talk to. He probably spent close to an hour walking us around, showing us all sorts of plants and telling us all kinds of neat stories about the place, even though we made it clear we just wanted to buy one small plant. It was so important to him that we get the plant that was perfect for the conditions we would have it in, in the color we wanted, etc, he couldn't care less how much or how little money we were spending. He just wanted us to be happy with our purchase and get a plant that would thrive. They only accept cash or check, no credit cards. He even carried the plant to our car with a wad of newspaper so it wouldn't make a mess. This place is a gem and it won't be there a whole lot longer. I am so grateful I saw this place - with absolutely PHENOMENAL magical views of the surrounding mountains and valleys - and got to see this beautiful nursery, and most importantly, got to meet this amazing, sweet man, and get a beautiful plant that I hope will live on for generations as a tribute to their legacy. read more
