They were overpriced compared to other landscape estimates I received, but we chose their landscaping services because they offered a year of interest free credit option. We hired them for a full backyard Reno with full wall of ficus trees, full DG backyard with gravel edges, and a wood fence. Everything was going smoothly with scheduling and communication. When the actual work got started, I noticed the DG was not high-quality. It contained a lot of large rocks. Also, they were not digging out enough dirt before laying the DG. I had to bring that up to the foreman and they did dig up some more dirt before laying the DG. When the work was done, a foreman did a quick walk-through with me and I thought everything looked good. We were told not to walk on the wet DG for a day or two. So two days later when I did a better inspection, I started to notice a lot of shotty work. Specifically with the bender board dividing the gravel and I noticed that they used really small nails for the wooden fence. They did come back a month later to fix the DG because there were areas that were "bouncy", as if not enough DG was laid down. They had to dig up big rocks that were preventing the DG from compacting and they laid more DG on some areas. They also tried to fix some bender board problems, but they did a really horrible job. Three months later, some wood planks on our wood fence start curving and popping up. I called the company because our DG and our fence are under a year warranty. Jake asked me to email him with photos and he said he would call back to schedule a day for repair. Since then I have not heard back from them; they have completely ghosted me. I waited a month then I started calling and no one will pick up the phone. I've left messages and I sent text messages to project manager, Amanda, who was great at communication at first, but now has completely ghosted me as well. Meanwhile, we're still paying monthly for this backyard that is falling apart way too quickly. I'm going to just hire someone to fix the fence before it damages further. I would not recommend them again. Completely overpriced for what you get. read more

It's not that they do bad work, or present unhealthy plants, it's just they seem so unprofessional. Need to grab something at 4 pm and they close at 5? Good luck. Maybe they're open. Maybe not. Gate could be open. Gate could be locked. You're not buying plants here, you're playing the lottery. This has happened 3 times in the last week. We were walking off lunch and wandered in to look at the plants, but didn't have any sort of plan to buy anything. We had our hands full with leftovers, the boy, and the dog so we were firmly in the browse zone. Then Vik jumps in the mix, calls the boy kiddo and asks if he wants to pet some fish. At this point, I'm intrigued and want to see where this goes, and you know what? He pet some of the koi fish in the pond, I have to admit I haven't seen that before (Kiddo was too scared to try). But THEN he starts telling us about these two plants next to the pond -- Mexican Mint and Sage -- and how their smell repels mosquitos. Kiddo has a huge bug bite on his leg, so the sale was pretty much instant. I planted them in my backyard this afternoon. So, this four star review is a five because of Vic and his kid charming skills. Had a terrible experience where we were recommended hedges that didn't work for our space, and despite multiple site visits and promises to fix or resolve the issue we never saw any tangible results. I contacted The Standard Design to inquire about landscaping services for my property in Altadena. I made it clear that while the home is still standing, we are currently displaced and the landscape is largely destroyed. I was connected with Amanda Schaffner, who promptly met me at the property. We had a productive conversation--she seemed to understand my vision, and I provided her with extensive information, including before-and-after photos and plant names. She assured me that I would receive a written estimate within a week. That deadline came and went without a response. I followed up via message, and she replied saying it would take a few more days. Again, nothing. I messaged once more--no response. I called and texted multiple times and received no reply. Out of concern, I reached out to the office and spoke to Chris. I explained the situation, and he responded by saying Amanda was busy and he would try to assist. He then asked whether I had been charged for anything; when I said no, he remarked, "Oh, I charge $1,000 for estimates--good for her not charging you," which was incredibly unprofessional and dismissive given the circumstances. Despite this, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and sent him all the necessary information. That was over a week ago, and once again, I have received no response. I understand people are busy, but failing to return messages and leaving potential clients in the dark is unacceptable. We are already dealing with the trauma of losing our neighborhood and being displaced. The lack of follow-through and basic professionalism from a local company that should understand the weight of what we're going through is beyond disappointing. Nothing but a bunch of scam artists. Do your own research, had to file a claim with the BBB, no surprise, they already had 2 other claims filed against them. I hired them to do some hardscaping to my back yard. Nothing major, just a 4ft retaining wall, irrigation and some fencing. I was quoted a price of $35k but was told to finance for more to cover permit and engineering costs. I financed through Green Sky and they immediately drew down on the entire amount which is illegal in CA. I hired them in June of 2023, I was told they would send out a survey team followed by soil testing which they did. From there they would have an engineer draw up the plans. That pretty much where the job stalled. Weeks went by with no contact, finally got Chriss on the phone only to tell me my project manager had quit and he was overloaded taking over all of his projects. He assured me he was on it. More weeks went by and still no progress. When I called again, I was told it was in the hands of the engineer the hired and they don't like to bother him as to not upset him...total BS. More weeks go by and no progress except now my call are being ignored. I call the main office and get the COO, Jake, involved. He gets the permits filed only for them to show me plans for a wall that was going to cost over $100k. At this point it has been a year of back and forth and they hadn't even broken ground. I told Jake I wouldn't be moving forward with them and would pay the costs of the survey, sold testing, and the engineering plans. He said that was $30k, yet would not provide me with and invoices of cost incurred. His reply was "it doesn't work that way, when you buy a car, does the dealership tell you how much every piece of the car costs" (They do actually). Had to file a dispute with the finance company and I'm still dealing with the fall out. If you're looking to hire them think twice. I'm sure there are better options out there. These guys will tell you what you want to hear just to get your business. read more

I contacted this company with high hopes for my landscaping project, which included installing a drip irrigation system in the back yard, updating sprinkler heads in the front yard, creating a landscape garden design, and establishing a 30-50 plant garden in the backyard. During the initial consultation, it became clear that our budget might not align with their typical projects. However, they remained polite and suggested exploring options to work within our constraints, which I appreciated. I was particularly interested in purchasing a design and exploring various implementation scales. However, some of the pricing discussed during the consultation seemed significantly higher than anticipated, and I had concerns about some of the irrigation recommendations. Specifically, I wanted to retrofit our existing irrigation system with a surface-level drip system for the new garden beds, utilizing our existing zones and repressurizing the valves. The designer insisted on a completely new, buried system, estimating a cost of $3,000 to $5,000 at a minimum, and suggested that after three years, the plants wouldn't require as much or any irrigation. I have since had other much lower quotes for irrigation, with proposals emailed to me within 24 hours from reputable landscape companies in the area. The consultant did mention they were not the cheapest in the area, they also mentioned they were not an irrigation expert. After speaking to a few experts we were told that a new irrigation system may not be necessary. I was told I would receive a follow-up within a day or two, but it's now been over week and I haven't heard back. This lack of communication is disappointing. While the initial consultation was polite, I feel potential customers should be aware that this company may prioritize larger-scale projects. It would have been more transparent and respectful of everyone's time if they had been upfront about their minimum project budget requirements. This experience has left me feeling disregarded. Based on my experience, I would caution anyone with a budget under $15,000 to carefully consider whether this company is the right fit for their landscape project. This was the initial, ball park figure I was quoted, and when I said it was out of my budget, I thought I might still be able to work with the company for their design work. The consultant boasted their knowledge of plants and garden design and I thought that might be something I could afford. However, I don't think that is something the company find worth putting their time and efforts toward. While I can't speak to the quality of their work, as I never received follow up to proceed with any potential project. I found the lack of clear communication and potential misalignment on budget expectations concerning. If you do choose to work with them, I sincerely hope your experience is more positive than mine. read more

We just had our backyard redone by the Standard Design Group. My wife and I are happy with the look and feel of our new backyard. We had DG, flagstones, lawn with new irrigation system, ficus trees fencing with timber logs retaining wall, and a Chinese Pistache tree installed. Alan provided great customer service, always available to answer our questions. Their work crews were friendly, working quickly to get the job done within a week. They have great selection of trees in their various nurseries. I'm looking forward to next Fall to enjoy our Chinese Pistache tree. read more

I reached out to The Standard Design Group in the Fall hoping to work with them to revamp our outdoor space/backyard in our new home in Altadena. I reached out via their website, and never heard back, so tried reaching out via Instagram. I got a response quickly, and Chriss came out the next day to take a look at our project. He was knowledgable, kind, and had great ideas for the space. While many of the ideas were ultimately out of our budget, he was able to come up with a plan that was within our budget and would meet our needs. During this initial interaction, I asked him what the timeline would look like, as that would play a role in deciding which company we'd ultimately go with. At that point, he told us they were looking at the second or third week of December. We reached out within a day or two to confirm with Chriss and pay the deposit. Shortly after, during the first week of November, we found a pathway in the backyard that went up higher than we expected, and asked Chriss to come take a look to see how we could adjust the plans to extend the turf over where that walkway was, given the new found path that was uneven. It added about $5,000 to our project, but again, we felt confident that it would be done right and were okay with the additional cost. From here, everything went downhill. On December 8th, I still had not been provided with a specific day or time that the crew would be coming out for their '2-3 day project'. I reached out to Chriss, and was told we were set for December 19th. I took the day off work, and waited around on the 19th, only for the crew to not show up. He informed me that he'd pushed us to the first week of January, which didn't work for us. He said he'd try to get it done sooner, but then once again, disappeared. No communication, at all, for days. I reached out on December 23rd and was ignored. I reached out again on December 24th and was told a crew would be there on Friday, the 27th. The night before, I texted him to confirm, and he tells me 'it's actually on Saturday'. The crew shows up Saturday, but I had been told someone would call me before arrival, and nobody did, so all of a sudden the crew is there, and we're not prepared or ready for them. We get that straightened out, get dogs away, etc. and have them begin work. They finish up working for the day, and tell us they won't be back until Monday, because they don't work Sundays. Fine -- they do, however, proceed to leave trash all over the yard (we're talking their dirty cups and to go containers, not landscaping trash). Monday rolls around, they work, then I confirm whether or not they'll be there Tuesday, and am told they won't be, because it's a holiday (New Years Eve). Again, I'm frustrated, as I'm preparing to leave town, but not much I can do. We prepare to leave for the day, and out of nowhere, after telling us they won't be in, the crew shows up. We then re-arrange our day to accommodate them. When they leave, they say they'll be back Thursday. 8:30 Thursday morning...I text Chriss to ask when they'll be back, and he says they won't be, but not to worry, because they'll be there tomorrow and only need one day to finish. They come out and 'finish' the next day. After they leave, I look thoroughly at the grass, and find that the corners/edges are not nailed/glued down all the way, and that there are literal holes in the turf in numerous places. I finally get ahold of 'Emilio' who is apparently a supervisor, who has a team come out the next day to 'fix the issues'. They come out, add some glue, and leave without saying anything. They left the holes in the turf, as if they were unnoticeable, and then vanished. That evening, the Eaton Fire destroyed the home, so at this point, the backyard isn't a priority. However, when they left on Tuesday, January 7th, holes remained in the turf they installed. I waited several weeks hoping they'd follow up with me, but I never heard from them again. I'm disappointed in how they handled this, as I was hopeful I'd be able to use them again later this year when we are ready to rebuild. I am hopeful that this will help others who are rebuilding with the process of choosing the company they work with for landscaping. The Standard posts beautiful work on their social media, and if they had fixed the issues when I brought them to their attention, and had actually shown up on the agreed upon dates or followed up in ANY way, I wouldn't be upset. The severe lack of communication combined with the poor quality of their work/materials is enough for me to steer clear of them in the future. I am hopeful that the many others in the community that will soon be looking for landscapers will look for alternatives so that they do not end up in the same position I did. read more
