Upon first meeting Gerry, he seemed like a harmless exaggerator. In reality, he proved to be an untrustworthy businessman, acting with poor intent. I purchased a 36" box tree and soil from Gerry, who assured me it was "the best soil possible" and guaranteed it wouldn't settle. His crew installed the tree, and the leaves had all dropped within a month. When I called Gerry, he brushed it off, claiming the tree was just in shock and would recover by spring. Spring came, and the tree remained lifeless. A landscape architect confirmed our worst fears: the tree had been planted too low and suffocated soon after planting. Gerry eventually came to inspect the tree after we insisted, only to admit that the tree was indeed dead and "worthless." He refused to take any responsibility, arrogantly insisting his crew "never make mistakes" and dismissing the photographic evidence that the initial soil level was incorrect. His defense? "You can't prove anything!" Gerry is a scam artist with zero regard for customer satisfaction and no sense of accountability. His business is completely untrustworthy. Horrible business! I went to Southland Nursery on the recommendation from my gardener. Our plan was to redo the front yard and I wanted to get some prices and recommendations from Southland Nursery. But to my shock, all I got was an earful of rudeness from the owner. Here's how it went down: ME: I want some recommendations on some plants/flowers/trees for my front yard. OWNER: No! Come back with your wife and if you're serious then I will give you some recommendations ME: Our schedules don't match up. Its hard for both of us to come here at the same time. If you give me some ideas then I'll show them to my wife and if she agrees then we'll go ahead with the plan. OWNER: Stop wasting your time and my time! If I spend time making a plan for you then you're going to show it to your IDIOT gardener and he's going to tell you to go to a different nursery....and buy them from somewhere else. Stop wasting my time! ME: Actually, my gardener is the one who told me to come to Southland Nursery. And I'm serious about redoing my front yard. OWNER: silence. Take some photos and measurements of your yard and then come back. To the owner (if you're reading this): You need to change your attitude if you want to succeed in this business. Your rudeness may cause the demise of your business. I'm sure you've been burned by customers whom you've spent time with giving ideas and plans to redo their home, only to have them bail out on you. I completely understand that happens. And I can understand if you are somewhat jaded by that. But you should not assume that every customer that walks into your nursery is going to do the same. If you do, then you're going to infuriate all potential customers and prevent them from ever doing business with you. We just bought our third tree from Southland Nurseries (2 pepper trees last year and now an olive) and they delivered and planted them. Gophers in our yard ate roots of one of the pepper trees and it appeared dead. We were just sick about it, but we left it in the ground and within a few weeks it had new growth and is now healthy and gorgeous. The olive tree was delivered and planted today. All three trees are just beautiful! they appear to have been well cared for at Southland before they came to us. Very professional service. read more

This nursery tucked away on La Tuna Canyon just off the 210 freeway is a pretty amazing place. It's very large, and has a great selection of trees, bushes, shrubs, and many other landscaping options. The prices are also pretty hard to beat. I think a lot of landscaping companies must use them as they have a sign saying they are open to the public. I sure am glad they are! We have purchased four bushes from them as we are slowly trying to grow a natural hedge between us and our neighbor so we don't have to look at the terrible chain linked fence someone at one point installed. The bushes were of decent size in their 5 gallon pots, and we had no problem transplanting them. They have also had no problem adapting to their new environment so I'm guessing this nursery doesn't feed them tons of fertilizer to make them look beautiful in the store and then die out several months later like some nurseries do. We have a lot of new growth on them even though it's only January. Of course, all the rain has certainly helped! The parking lot is small, but the two times I've been, there weren't too many other cars. The grounds are expansive. The staff is friendly, helpful, but a bit hard to find. This nursery does not carry a lot of flowers. They do have roses here, but you won't find other flowers here though I'm pretty positive you could order them with the staff, you just wouldn't get them the same day. He offered to order me a specific color of flowering shrub I am thinking about for my front yard which is why I'm making this assumption. You can purchase soil there pretty cheaply, not sure what the quality is like. Great place for your landscaping needs! read more

I rented plants for a production, I was asked to pay a deposit of $900 fir 12 plants and a rental fee of $20. When I called to get my money the owner now wanted $25 per plant and wanted to charge me that fee daily and per plant. Really great customer service. We've now had three trees planted by them on two occasions. Both times, we were able to order the trees/pay over the phone and have them delivered and planted. The first pair of trees are thriving a year later. Today we had a third tree planted - I ordered it on a rush basis 4 days ago to be planted specifically today to honor a little girl who passed last week and whose birthday would have been today. The nursery already had a very full day of deliveries and plantings, but they made a huge effort to squeeze us in and make sure the tree was planted on the special day. The tree arrived exactly at the time they said it would, it was lush and beautiful, and was very well planted. Thank you, Southland, for making this happen for us! read more

Gerry screwed up what I have ordered on the first delivery. Instead of making it right, the second delivery consisted of really sick-looking plants infested with mealy bugs, and again incomplete (he did not bring the soil he sold me with the plants). I began to realize that he did not know about the specific species I ordered, so messed up the order - and probably tried to cover up his mistakes. He made me pay for his mistake. We made a mistake paying this guy in cash when ordering. He took advantage of the situation, brought bad plants and deducted 5 times the delivery fee (minus $125) when we insisted on a refund. I intend to file a complaint with BBB as well. read more

Be careful. Don't get suckered into paying for items up front. You'll never get your money back from this place. We were quoted for 300+ plants to create a privacy hedge, which to be installed on our backyard remodel. Gerry asked us to pay for it all upfront to reserve the lot with the nursery to make sure we get all of the same plants. He ends up installing only 138 bushes. When we tried to contact him and get our refund, he would evade our calls. Ended up reimbursing only 1/4 of what we paid, explaining that he changed some trees (without our permission) to a more expensive breed. read more

My family had never shopped at this local nursery and there's is no a reason we won't be back. My husband called to get a price on a plant and the gentleman on the phone who said he was the owner advised $ 60. This is a decent price so my husband drove out to get 10 of these plants. My husband asked if he could get a deal since we were buying so many. The "owner" then explain that we were crazy and he proceeded to explain to us how he plants these 10 gallon $60 plants in a 25 gallon planter and charges $195 , so it was up to us take it or leave it. Even at $60 this plant was An ok deal but I can consciously buy plants from someone who does this kind of deciding measures to make more money. Please take precaution in what size your plant really is not matter what pot size it's in. This is an obvious scam to get people to spend 3x the price it should be. read more

Took 10 days to do a 1 or 2 day job, arrived at least 4 hours late every day of the 10-day ordeal, overcharged $3,500, never delivered items promised and to top it off, they piled my great soil into their truck and drove it away and replaced it with what seemed to be sand. Needless to say NOTHING grew in the 3x 14 vegetable box they charged $7,500. Every single plant was planted in an awkward & inappropriate place and had to be removed and replanted. Near the end of the project the owner wanted the balance paid saying there was very little left to be done and promised the fence would be put up the same day. But as soon as I paid him the balance, the two-man crew along with the owner disappeared and from that point on his tone changed from fake-friendly to aggressive and dismissive. I had to drive to the nursery to pick up SOME of the items they charged for but never delivered and when I asked for a refund of $1,700 for the fence they never put, they promised they will be there in an hour to start "building the fence" and showed up several hours later that same day only to screw 3 lattices on my existing fence - which must have cost them no more than $60 - and left me a hideous patched-up, horrid, cheap looking mess. And if I didn't unscrew and take them all down, it would have eventually ruined my existing fence. Even though I pointed out to the crew that the garden tools with the yellow handles are mine and not to take those away confusing them with their tools, every single rake & tool I had were gone after they packed up and left. When I drove again to the nursery asking for the paid window boxes I had been waiting for that were never delivered, I was given a long winded nonsensical excuses for why they were late and again insisted and assured they will be delivered, but as expected, I never heard from them and, as expected, no window boxes were ever delivered. To say I'm disgusted by how unscrupulous these people are would be an understatement of the decade. Take your money and go shop at nurseries run by decent honest people. There are plenty of them around. This is NOT one of them. p.s. The good reviews are obviously from members of their family. The only people who would think this is a funny review are the corrupt and dishonest owners of this place read more

What an amazing place! I've been driving on La Tuna Canyon for over 15 years everyday and I gotta say, I love passing this spot every time. They turned this place from a landfill to an amazing huge garden. If you ask me, i rather see nature over someone's random construction trash dump site. My hats off to the owners! So after driving passed this place I decided to drop in and grab some stuff for the backyard. Not only did I not know what I wanted, I knew 0 about flowers. The folks over there asked me a few questions and started pointing out suggestions. Brought it home, planted them and my backyard is worth a million bucks now! And to Deirdra H... you're a soulless bastard you know that? I met Gary during one of my visits. As a matter of fact he gave me A LOT of amazing pointers and they were all great. For you to sit there and say all that about a sick dying man for $250.00, SHAME ON YOU! You are the soul reason why assholes exist! If you're reading this.. msg me... come by... I will throw the $250.00 at your face and maybe you'll grow a heart and donate it to some cancer foundation. You are nothing but trash and poor excuse of life. We delivered several thousands of dollars of Palms to this business per the request of the owner "Gerry" who is very pleasant at first. After delivering the palms we were supposed have been paid COD. He made an excuse to our delivery driver and said the check would be mailed out tomorrow. Over a month later we contacted him to inquire about payment and he hung up and has never been reachable again by phone or email. Upon further investigation he and his business are suspended from operating in this state due to Tax fraud by not paying the sales tax they collect from their customers to the state. We have filed a law suit against him and hope everyone else who has been burned by this criminal does the same. We operate on good faith and the goodness of humanity. I was absolutely blown away when we rolled into this nursery! There are an insane variety of plants here, from fruit trees to vines to succulents and shrubs. After asking whether they stocked dwarf orange trees, one of the owners guided us to the right spot and then explained the pros and cons and a little about each one. After some deliberation, we decided on a very healthy looking Washington naval in a 15 gallon pot, reasonably priced. They also sell very large wooden "pots" that last a long time and are much cheaper and lighter than clay. At that point Gary took over and he helped us estimate how many bags of soil we would need to fill the aformentioned pot, and gave us great pointers about water and fertilization. I really, truly enjoyed my visit here and the super customer service and easily could have walked out with a MUCH lighter wallet had I not been with the hubby. Highly recommended! read more

Please don't use this place. They are really unprofessional. They sent a landscape designer to me, who I gave $250.00 to to set up initial plans and plant lists. He came with the owners son Marvin, who took a few pictures. The landscape designer got sick during this process and no one called me to tell me he was in the hospital so, 3 months into waiting I contacted the landscape designer to ask for a refund from him, and that is when I found out he had been sick. He would not refund me the money and said he had the plans done. My husband and I just now are able to meet with him, and I find out that the landscape designer is dying. They will not help me or give me back my platt map. Lesson learned, passing it on. DONT USE THIS PLACE. read more

I live in Shadow Hills quite near La Tuna Canyon so you can imagine how happy I was to find Southland - after a few trips there and experiencing such enthusiastic and knowledgable help, I hired Gary to design a landscape for my huge front yard. He came by many times to get all the measurements and information he needed, provided us with EXCELLENT plans and covered every possible contigency with his estimates. In addition he advised us on everything from our tomato plants to plants/flowers that were safe to use around my horses who live on my property. Gary is a lovely lovely man - and we were distraught to here about his health - what he brings to Southland and our community is wonderful and we wish him the best. Deidre - you need to get your priorities straight. I can't imagine that anyone could be this heartless - I wouldn't want your karma. read more

Three strikes, you're out! On 3 different occasions while looking for a nice potted flower for my wife, I've tried to stop in here, and have yet to even be let inside. I've given three chances because its local rather than a big business like home depot. I've lived in the area my entire life, and I frequent as many local businesses as I can. I've pulled up into the driveway, no one came out. I got out of my car, I looked through the gate and saw no one. I looked up their number and called them, only to get a voicemail. Three. Different. Times. During the day. On a weekday, on a weekend. It didn't matter. Big sign says open for business with business hours posted, but the gate is closed, and at that part of La Tuna, pulling into a driveway and then having to back out again is very dangerous. Open the gate. Let people in. We're the customers, stupid! read more

Found this place by accident about a half year ago and thought it fairly average with a few interesting plants and lots of potential since it's a large area just off the freeway. Problem is it's not visible from the freeway and has poor signage. Staff nice and fairly enthusiastic although seemed like relative newbies to the plant world. Went on a day of nursery hopping/ plant exploring in the area so decided to drop in and see if there was any progress. The layout and plants are a bit cleaner than when I saw it last and the more interesting and diverse stuff is right up front so I guess it's still a work in progress. The diversity in the plants but not what I expected from L.F's review. Rows and rows of Ficus and Ligustrum. Only a couple of flats of bedding plants for color at ~late morning on Sat. and only a couple other people besides myself there so I'd guess the lack of stock is typical for that department and not due to a sell out . They did have a couple tree Aloes, an interesting Eremophila, and more diversity in drought tolerant type plants than what you might find at OSH or Home Depot. Fair pricing. If you live in the area or have a landscaping job in the area definitely worth knowing it's there The guy on duty Sat. seemed much more interested in texting or looking at stuff on his phone than helping customers and was snippy in answering questions like it was a bother. They better still have some of the nice staff and should put them on the weekends instead of this guy other wise I bet a lot of other people are not coming back any time soon. read more

He was so knowledgable and helpful in assisting me in picking plants for my drought tolerant yard. And I must say, very patient. He spent at least 21/2 hours with me and my mom going over everything from native plants to other drought tolerant species. He will be missed very much. On our first visit, we met Tom, and he was very helpful and knowledgeable about the plants we wanted to buy as well as some other questions we had. He was very patient and cordial and helped us load plants into the car. The prices are reasonable and the location is easy to access from the 210 freeway off La Tuna Canyon Road past the underpass on the right. It is surrounded by mountains and is a nice place to browse. They supply many plants that are drought resistant and appropriate for the Southern California landscape. read more
