However, recently we came there and ordered a dish called " Vermicelli with fried Tofu & pork" (Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm). We were so disappointed as we couldn't stand the terribly strong smell and taste of the shrimp paste (Mắm Tôm) that day. Despite of my love for Shrimp paste since I was young, the smell and taste that time definitely ruined my favorite dish so I had to request for fish sauce instead. The calamari had onion rings in place of squid rings. The soft shell crabs were bits and pieces of really tiny chopped up crabs clinging to big chunks of deep fried onions. My family and I recently had our family dinners here and it is great for big parties. There are plenty of seating to host 10-20 people. Just make sure to call in advance for reservations if you don't want to wait! The restaurant is located in Grand Century Mall, but you can enter the restaurant from the outside entrance for inside the mall. The ambiance is lively and we have always received great service. There are plenty of parking spaces that are free in a private lot. We always order the baked honey catfish, lobster fried rice (special), Pad Thai, and 7 beef course. The food is delicious and the price is reasonable. The entrees are definitely made for group dinners where you can share plates instead of ordering one individual plate. If you had to choose one entree to share with a big party, I would highly recommend the baked honey catfish! Just make sure to order in advance because it takes 30 minutes to make the baked honey catfish. We ordered food to be picked up, and even so we were pleased of the presentation and quality. The food was packaged carefully and arrived in good condition, despite the speedy drive home. The Lobster in XO Sauce over Long Life Noodles was the best of dishes that can be prepared, and respectfully tasted AMAZING. It was buttery, sweetly seasoned with asian spices, and the tender lobster meat almost melted in your mouth. We were surprised with a special hidden treat of lobster eggs. The light flavor of the Long Life noodles balanced out the delicious XO sauce. Every single bite of this dish was delicious. You REALLY have to try this yourself! We also ordered the Basil & Garlic Clams which were lightly seasoned, Crispy Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs which were nice a crunchy, and Malaysian Fried Rice. My buddy and I hadn't met up for dinner in way too long so we decided to rekindle the tradition with some good grub in San Jose. After weighing our options, we ended up choosing Saigon Kitchen because they have a really special catfish dish that they're well known for. I LOVE catfish so I was definitely down to give it a try. We decided to order a medium fish for $37.95, which is a high premium on what a catfish normally costs. However, their special fried preparation has you making your own spring rolls, which is a fun experience. There's plenty for two or even three people to share but its definitely a high price to pay, and I would have definitely expected it to be significantly less, perhaps even half! However, I admit that it was really tasty and I cleaned the fish off from one end to the other, and would recommend the dish for larger parties. Service was friendly and attentive and there was a fun wedding party across the partition. I definitely want to try some of their other dishes sometime too and looking forward to returning. I love this place...I love the owners here. They are the nicest people. The fried catfish is so good. It comes out as a whole fish baked and is butterflied for you so it's easier for you to eat. I always get it with the wraps and always ask for fish sauce because I hate that brown sauce..smells pretty bad. I love making my own spring rolls...the best. I love the Banh Xeo here (Vietnamese style crepe with pork and shrimp)...it's so good and crispy and just one can fill you up. I always wrap mines in lettuce and dip with fish sauce..so yummy. They also have the Bo Luc lac (Cubed beef) with garlic noodles...love it here, the meat is tender and the noodles are perfectly seasoned with garlic and I like it not over powering. The butter garlic has bigger snails and has enough flavor if you dip it in the sauce. Also recommend the 7 course meat. Too good. The meat wrapped in Lotus leaf is the best. The service was friendly (shoutout to the gal with the Nickelodeon sweater!), and the speed for the food was surprising! My favorite dish was the vegetarian one with the steamed lotus leaves on the bottom. It was pleasant for the eyes, and delicious for the stomach! Pros: Saigon Kitchen is an optimal restaurant for a family gathering. Since the portions are HUGE, it is best to dine with a large group so you can try many items on the menu and are able to finish everything. They are known for their Signature Whole Catfish, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend getting down and dirty when you eat this dish, meaning you should eat with your hands, not spoon and fork. You can tear off a piece of the fish with your hand and make a spring roll, then dip it in the fermented fish sauce. I love my vegetables so I really like how they are not stingy with the platters of vegetables to make spring rolls with this dish. Also, I love how the skin of the catfish is crispy and the meat is not dry. Our servers were Viet and Ryan, and they were very friendly, respectful, and attentive. Cons: We also tried their Lobster X.O. with Garlic Noodles. Since the adults in my family ordered the garlic noodles on the side, they brought out the noodles way in advance before the lobster. It was my first time here, so I did not know that the garlic noodles was paired with the lobster... By the time we devoured almost all of the garlic noodles, my aunt finally spoke up and said that we were supposed to wait for the lobster! If two dishes were supposed to be paired together, please serve them at the same time. This is one of the more fancier vietnamese restaurants that offers a vast menu that looked very promising. Went with the seven course beef per recommendation, crispy seafood noodles, and cha ca la vong (sizzling dill and spiced catfish). The only dish I liked were the crispy seafood noodles and even then it's NOT a dish that I would say is a must-try. The seven course beef was served way too quickly without even giving us time to enjoy each course by itself and quite frankly I would have let this slide if it were delicious, but alas, another disappointment. And as for the catfish, it was RAW. Yes it is served on a hot plate, but this is to give it a nice crust on the outside not to do the cooking for the chef. As for the service.. well THERE WAS NO SERVICE. We waited 30 minutes to be seated and once there was a table open for us, the host pointed at the table and told us to go there. He didn't follow us with menus or anything. We waited at the table for someone to come, but all of the servers paid no attention. We ended up getting menus for ourselves. Then we had to flag a server just to place our order. Oh btw, did I mention that our "clean" table wasn't actually clean? They did not bother to replace the dirty and stained table cloth like they usually do, so essentially we were eating our meals on other people's leftovers. Oh, and get this.
