We went here solely based on the reviews. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the menu was extensive, however, that's where the good ended. We started with the pork potstickers, which unfortunately were not homemade. There were instead the same frozen ones you can find in any Asian market and most grocery store...highly disappointing. We tried two different dishes, the chef's special chicken, which was similar to General's chicken just not as sweet. The chicken itself was quite overcooked, almost like jerky. The sauce was catsup based and a bit heavy on the vinegar. The other dish we had was the chicken with garlic green beans. It was much better however, it had the same catsup based sauce with less vinegar. The bathrooms left the worst impression. They looked like the ones you see in the movies at the seedy truck stops that look as if they haven't been cleaned in years. Just nasty. This left a bad impression as I then started to notice how dirty and grimy everything else looked... Based on marginal food and downright awful bathrooms I can safely say we won't be back. read more

Tonight I wanted real Asian Food, not fixed by a cookie-cutter restaurant with frozen sauces and food. The people were so friendly and offered to make my food to please my pallet and health concerns. They deliver the food themselves and it was excellent. Will return here again and again. They deliver themselves, which is a real plus for me. read more

I think maybe we just ordered the wrong things? My husband ordered the seafood hotpot. It smelled like a urinal and his stomach made the worst noises all night after we got home. You might be asking us why he would eat something that smelled like a urinal, and we actually googled why his food smelled like that, and it turns out that canned bamboo can make food smell like urine. So his upset stomach had nothing to do with the smell. I ordered the sesame chicken. The sauce tasted okay, but the chicken itself was a strange grey color and I couldn't stomach eating it. The fried rice that came with my meal was good. My daughter ordered chicken lo mein, and it was fine. I think maybe if you go, order carefully. Don't be too adventurous. read more

Saigon Cafe has been open for about three weeks and I just found out about it at around 7:30 am this morning, so naturally, my dinner plans were made at around 7:35am this morning. I went with my parents. Pretty darn good Vietnamese food. It's not the best I've had (that's Pho Saigon in Austin) but it's definitely better than I've had anywhere else in central Texas. To be honest, it's not a "Vietnamese" restaurant per se, but an Asian restaurant. The menu offers Chinese and Malasian dishes as well, but I didn't notice any of it; I was there for the bun, which is what i got. I ordered the bun thit nuong cha gio, which is what I order at every Vietnamese restaurant i visit. Predictable, I know, but the bun never is. This bun was really good... the pork was beautifully char-grilled and thin, and very tender. The vermicelli was typical but tender, and the veggies were fresh, cold and crisp. This bun was sans carrot, which i was completely alright with to be honest. Not sure if the waiter simply forgot or if the bun doesn't come with fish sauce, but I had to ask for it. Not too concerned about it, actually, and this fish sauce was the most wonderful fish sauce I've ever had. Perfectly sweet and tart, garlicky and peppery. Beautiful. The vietnamese iced coffee was as good as I've ever had. I'm sure I'll be up until sometime in September. The service was great; our server came around to refill drinks and check on us at regular intervals - just enough, not too much to be a pest. I'm hoping this restaurant breaks the curse of the building they're in and sticks around for a while. ...and I'm going back tomorrow with friends. read more

I'm here for a quick lunch on a Sunday. I only ordered the pho with round eye beef steak. The pho was surprisingly good! I came from a town with actually more Vietnamese restaurants than Starbucks or McDonald's, and I've been eating pho from time to time for years, and I have to say this restaurant has a soup base that's very bold in beef flavor, and it tasted great! The service was very nice too! The boss's wife was always by the door watching to see who needs anything and tell her waiters. Didn't expect to find a nice Vietnamese restaurant in a small town like Temple! If I stop by this area and feel like some pho, I'll definately visit again! read more

I had a really great experience at this hot spot! I brought my team of about 10 here for a working lunch and had great service and all of our food came out at the same time, really hot and fresh. The wait staff were very friendly and made sure we were checked on regularly and kept our drinks full. The food was outstanding. Much better than I was expecting. The Hot and Sour soup might have been the best I've had anywhere. I went with the Kung Pao spicy. If I had any critique about this place it might be that there were too many water chestnuts in the the dish. If I wanted to grab a quick hot meal that I know would taste great, I would come here again no problem. read more

So glad we found you, Saigon Cafe!!! We live in Waco and have to admit this, there is zero good Vietnam restaurant in Waco. Saigon Cafe is a worth 30 minutes drive. Love this place. The decor is very simple and comforting. Booths and tables are really nice and comfy. Restroom is very clean. Service is awesome. Foods are greatness!! For beverages, we had Vietnamese iced coffee. It was good and strong. As a starter, we ordered shrimp spring rolls. They were good, not the best, and peanut sauce was perfect. For entrees, we had beef pho, laksa and chili lab. Beef pho was good. Tasty, clean and flavorful broth. Everything was cooked to perfection. Laksa was really tasty. Noodle was too broken for me. Broth had a very bold flavor. Too bold to finish the whole bowl. And chili crab was awesooooome! Perfect sauce. We will definitely be back here!! read more

Having lived in Houston and Austin for several years, it's easy to long for some quality Asian food even while visiting Temple. In terms of the look, the atmosphere, and the service, this place was pretty legit. We came here for Sunday lunch and the place was pretty packed. I got the pork vermicelli and I was rather underwhelmed. The pork pieces were really small and the amount seemed a little low for what I paid for. I've been to many different Vietnamese restaurants before and this has been my least satisfying experience so far. My fiance got the Pho and it seemed alright. I gave this place a 3-star relative to the other places I've been to. But considering that this is in Temple, I might have given this place a 4-star instead if I lived here. read more

Ordered some takeout due to severe lack of desire to cook a meal for just myself. My order was ready within 10-15 minutes and the person that greeted me was friendly. I asked for a side of chili oil and they actually had some. That always gains you at least one star. (A certain Asian fusion chain store in town had no idea what I was talking about) So I ordered the house appetizer platter- standard fried shrimp, cheese wontons and egg rolls. Wontons were all bread an little filling. Also sort of tough and chewy. The egg rolls were pretty good however- but the dipping sauce was way too sweet for me. I got the house special chicken which was supposed to be battered fried chicken in a hot and sour spicy sauce, with fried rice instead of steamed. I don't know if they just got the wrong sauce on it but it was very sweet and not sour or spicy at all. It was good of you like no spice General Tso chicken. The rice was just blah- not much flavor. There are lots of choices for Americanized Asian- I may try these folks again after making the rounds. read more

Great eats. Building is dated and needs repair but don't let that put you off. Service was great and food was a delight. Had the hot pot seafood delight and it was so very good. I enjoyed the food at the Saigon Cafe and the service was excellent. I ordered a couple of egg rolls and orange beef. Flavor and spice were on a good level. There was a little too much breading for my liking though. My ice tea glass was constantly refilled which is better than many places can say. Ordered to go: I'd say skip it and try another place.. Sweet n sour chicken was so overdone you couldn't even pick it up with fork. Crunch crunch(they filled the bowl with vegetables to make it seem full) Veggie fried rice was good but nothing special. And wanted crab ragoons settled for their "cheese wontons" again so overcooked it was burnt in some places and a pitiful filling of cheese (not even a tbl spoon) . Just in town working but wouldn't order again and don't recommend . Maybe dining in is better! There was a positive to this all.. It took like 10 mins to deliver to my hotel room. read more

I've been to this nice little restaurant before and the entrees and service are good and it's clean. But... I picked up an order of chicken and vegetable fried rice yesterday and I was terribly disappointed. I THIS was an entrée not a side. It was probably the worst I've ever had. They use a tiny small grain rice, two pieces of broccoli and a snow pea. It had no flavor, packed in a bowl until it was just mush and the broccoli tasted sour. It bummed me out. read more

I was so disappointed in our meal tonight. I ordered a large amount of food and it was awful and even gave a 15% tip for a pick up order. The appetizers were awful and overcooked with congealed red sauce the chicken pho was bland, no bean sprouts, and the herbs were rotten. The rice was even old and not fresh. Our daughter said her Mongolian beef was bland and she said it wasn't beef I called and told them what I thought and will never order or eat there again. I'm starting this review at two stars because of the roti canai. As someone who is from Malaysia, this isn't authentic here. The roti canai, after clarifying with the woman on the phone, is served with curry chicken. If that's the case, then it's really curry chicken served with roti, NOT roti canai. The liquid accompanying roti canai isn't thick at all and completely different than a curry sauce. Roti canai should include a liquid with the same viscosity as an American oil and vinegar dressing but sweet/spicy (common Malaysian flavor) and bright red. This restaurant is lazy in failing to make a different condiment for roti canai. The lady on the phone claimed the owners are from Malaysia and when I asked where, she didn't know. In addition, this is hands down the most expensive roti canai I've ever encountered in either Malaysia or the USA, and y'all know I travel a lot! To give you an idea of pricing, you can buy 5 pieces of roti (a.k.a. paratha) at an Indian grocery store for $1! I've seen $4.95 at most for roti canai elsewhere in the USA. That's definitely more reasonable! But, I was really craving rice. Dubious of the Malaysian part of the menu, I focused on other aspects. I inquired about the roast duck to confirm it's not Peking duck. "Almost the same," she said. Yes they are but roast duck has more meat vs Peking duck has more skin. I decided to try. I ordered the egg drop soup and pot stickers with no problems. Maybe I asked too many questions, but as a fellow Asian, she should be used to that. Heck, I'm always asked if I'm married, what do I do for a living, etc in a Vietnamese nail shop. You get used to it after a while without getting offended. This place is not the same as it use to be. I had lunch today and found hair in my food. The chips they give you for your soup was stale, egg roll tasted old and drink was close to flat The manager offered to remake the food over but I couldn't wait because I had to get back to work, however; the manger didn't charge me for the meal but charged me for the soup that comes with the lunch special and for my drank which came out to close to what the meal was. The last time we ordered, they forgot my sweet & sour sauce for my chicken and had the driver bring to us but the chicken was soggy and tasteless. I keep giving this place chances but they fail every time. My co- workers and I have made up our minds and won't be back. I checked this placed out as a recommendation from a friend and I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. The place was very clean. The staff were all very nice and the service was excellent. The waitress was very attentive. She was very quick to take my order and deliver my food. The food overall was very tasty. I'm very biased about Asian food but I was very pleased with the food. I was a bit hesitant because the food was a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Malaysian cuisine and that the restaurant would mess up all the flavors. To my surprise, the food was delicious. The portions were big. The price was a steal. If you're in Temple and craving Asian food, Saigon Cafe is definitely the place to go. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
