I'm Vietnamese and my mom is from Saigon. With that said I've had pho my entire life and have been to dozens of Vietnamese restaurants. My true test of pho is tasting the broth before adding anything else to the bowl. The food arrived well packaged and beautiful to the eye. We are trying some Malaysian dishes, chicken curry and roti. Found them to be flavorful,well seasoned. For my husband we tried schezuhan beef instead of Mongolian. He enjoyed it very much. The pad Thai chicken was well seasoned, perfectly spiced with lots of tender chicken pieces. The food was DELICIOUS! Fried calamari was gone in mere minutes bc it was just SO good! Our server was rly nice, and patient as our party of ten ordered. I got the seafood hot pot, and let me say: WOW! It was amazing except for the strange texture of one of the ingredients, but if you avoid those unsettling horse-chesnuts(I think that's what they are) ur just fine. This was the fourth time that we visited Saigon, and it was so bad that we will not return. There were three of us and we each ordered a different lunch combo. I had the moo goo gai pan, which was very good, but couldn't eat the eggroll because it tasted like rancid oil. our son ordered orange chicken and it tasted sour and there were very few hints of orange flavor. This was my first time here. I was not impressed. The summer rolls were filled with browned lettuce, but good sized and quantity shrimp. I've had much better. The rice wrappings were very sticky and chewy and the peanut sauce wasn't good. The house fried rolls, however, were really good. I ordered shrimp Pho (not on the menu) the shrimps were impressively large. But the pho was tasteless. Lets start w the YES or positive points: Service was fast and friendly enough. LARGE selection of menu, ingredients seemed very fresh. Inside was very clean and they were constantly cleaning. If i was scoring on that alone, I'd give 5 stars. (Which i great, very nice place). Now the NO point, just doesn't seem like Vietnamese is their strong suite. The dish... on what I expected- just at 3 stars. Now the dish, i had BV3 which was the vermicelli bowl w chargrilled pork and eggrolls. - this is traditionally a Vietnamese dish usually served with vermicelli/rice noodles, sprouts, cucumbers the protein/add ons (in this case - the pork and egg rolls) served with Eggrolls were the best part. Noodles were VERY cold ( not a hot dish - but not supposed to be cold either) the fish sauce (I don't think this had any fish sauce at all - more of a vinegar sauce). And the pork, it was 'ok' and had a decent flavor, but was over cooked and not marinated - so it was too well done and a little dry. For what I was expecting- i was disappointed. If it was a dish I had never had (which I've had 'a few' and have been eating this for about 35 years), then I would probably have enjoyed it better. I'm going to have to come back and give them a try on a Chinese or Malaysian dish. read more

Ok. So I went back, this time w/ a whole team of people. We skipped the Vietnamese cuisine and went for the Chinese dishes. In the end I'd say it was 3.75 stars - which rounds up to 4. Off the lunch menu I got the Szcheuan Chicken (yeah, chicken looked the same as last time), the others got Vegetable Pot Stickers, Roasted Duck Dinner, and Moo Goo Gai Pan. The food came out fairly quick. The pot stickers were good, the roasted duck looked great - you get a lot for $12.95. The Szcheuan Chicken was good - not as spicy as I thought it would be, and the Moo Goo was tasty as well. You get fried or white rice, egg roll, and a bowl of soup if you order a lunch special - - it's reasonably priced, dishes range from $6.75 to $9.75 and above. Service was very good and attentive. The order taker was one of the female managers, she was kinda pushy when you were trying to order - - too much suggestive selling to push for more sales. I get annoyed with that sometimes, but we were able to manage it. So it's not the 4 stars Yelp rating "YAY! I'M A FAN!!!", but fairly close. The Chinese dishes are loaded w/ MSG, this I can tell since I was practically napping the rest of the day. They still have to redeem themselves on the Pho Noodle Soup experience - - next time I may go for the Beef Pho Pho Sure. read more

PROS: Decent Roti Prata that were likely store bought but crisped up on the grill. The Chicken Curry was also alright and was a huge portion with lots of white meat chicken. The Pho portion was large with a decent amount of meat, tendon and tripe (special order off the menu!). CONS: The Pho broth was weak. The Chicken Rendang was not recognizable--we lived in Penang, Malaysia for 4 years and had travel to Singapore by way of Kuala Lumpur. We were very sad. Where to start? After being seated and ordering drinks I got a wonton soup. Im from NY and our wonton soup contains meat filled wontons. This is not the case at this establishment. In my initial bowl of soup there was wonton dough pieces but no wontons. When bringing it to the server's attention he was confused on what wonton soup is. He went and got another bowl of soup which had about 2 or 3 wontons. The wontons have no filling. It's just the wonton dough folded in on itself. Ive never had wontons like that but it was a no for me. When I asked him if theirs are made with filling he said he didn't know how the wontons are made. The broth was good though. Just unfortunate. Also got the steamed dumplings. Those were decent. I put in 1 order of egg rolls which has a quantity of 2. The waiter brought out 4 egg rolls. (Only 2 pictured). I thought it was a courtesy thing. Nope. Definitely charged me for each order. I saw a review here saying they slide things onto your bill. True. I didn't mind because the egg rolls were good but it was sneaky imo. Got a special rice noodle which I know as mei fun. It was pretty alright. To add beef was a $3 upcharge. The special lo mein was sweet to me. It tasted too sweet to be lo mein. It was closer to a teriyaki. Like on its way there. The rice noodle sauce was more of a lo mein sauce. The shrimp kid plate threw me ALL the way off. It was sweet and sour breading but the shrimps were big. Nothing on the kid's meals can be substituted. In my case it was a waste of $ because mine ate the noodles. Overall- decent. It was empty when I went. If youre looking for NYC style Chinese this isnt it. But its not nasty. The waiter should have had better product knowledge but it is what it is. Normally I don't post negative reviews, but in this case I had to make an exception. I ordered pad thai for my family and beough it home. Nobody could hardly eat it, it was so disgusting and rubbery and not at all like pad thai should taste. They didnt even use the right noodles. So I tried to take it back, arguing the point. Now I would have been perfectly fine had they said sorry and swapped it out for some Chinese food which is good over there and never order/speak of the pad thai again. The woman said that is what I ordered so basically I'm stuck with it, and as for the chinese she'd do it so long as I paid half. Really? You have a household of customers who have been helping you out, ordering takeout pretty consistently with everything going on, and you can't even make it right to us one single time? tl;dr One dish was perfect, but there were three of us eating, so that left two of us a bit unsatisfied. We had no complaints of the servers and the place itself, as a dining atmosphere. Stopped by on our way to Houston, and we didn't really have expectations since we just pretty much picked randomly and what was close. First of all, there were so many things in the menu, which isn't at all a bad thing to me. Just that this review will be based on the few things that we DID order, and it almost seems unfair that we're reviewing just based on such a tiny fraction of their menu. So don't judge the restaurant based on this review alone. We had the sweet and sour pork, curry with beef, and special pad thai that my mom loved, which I thought was really good as well. The sweet and sour pork was my dad's order, which he didn't like at all. He even took some off of my mom's and my dish instead of finishing his own. It was about 2/3rds flour and 1/3rd pork. Not just that, it wasn't even hot when it was served. Meanwhile I had the beef curry. The curry itself was perfect, but the beef that came with it was tougher than tire. Maybe tenderize the beef first before it's prepared? the special Pad Thai on the other hand was perfect and my mom loved it. So we definitely recommend that. read more

The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and I love their lunch menu with value added options that were delicious! Ultimately my favorite dish is the duck - its always cooked to perfection. I've been here several times in the past, but today was horrible. The waitress brought me someone else's food to begin with. Then she brought my husbands food before she brought mine (she said she didn't want his food to get cold). So I sit there waiting for mine (mine was cold when she brought it to me) the meat was tough, the rice was stale, the cucumbers tasted like what I would imagine a cleaning solution would taste like. We are newer to Temple and are slowly exploring what food is available in town. We have seen Saigon on Yelp for a few months and decided to give them a try. We were greeted warmly as we entered and soon our wonderful server Dottie introduced herself to us and offered us drinks, we selected Vietnamese coffee and spring rolls. As we waited we scanned their impressive menu. So many things wet our appetites but who were we kidding we were there for pho! We ordered the pho with tripe and meatballs, we were then told about the special pho that had all the extras we desired all included, YES PLEASE! The pho here is outstanding. The beef flavor is outstanding. Never have we had that true beef experience in clear broth, we sipped again to make sure our taste buds weren't fooling us. The worst Pho that we ever eat.. Kinda speechless on how bad it was. Kind of upset that it is called Saigon, but it mainly has Chinese food. The veggies were old. The soup was salty, and it didn't taste like Pho soup. Taste like they use the premade seasoning, and that's it. Don't taste like it has any beef bone broth. I will not revisit this restaurant. Don't order the BBQ ribs here. They were super chewy and just had sweet and sour sauce doused on them, perhaps to make them "asian." I wouldn't do the curry either. They use some powder that doesn't dissolve very well. It has that powdery consistency. The sesame and orange chicken were good. So were the spring and egg rolls but the peanut sauce was the thinnest I've encountered. The dumplings were loved for the fresh flavor. The pho, well that's hard to screw up, but it was good also. This restaurant is not the best Chinese (at least) in Temple. Typical of the South, Saigon Café adds too much sugar and the sweetness overwhelms the other favors of the meal. It's the equivalent of smothering pancakes with syrup. Temple's and Belton's downtown has much better Asian restaurants. Plus their rice is subpar. I do not recommend this place and they would benefit from having western wait staff. read more
